Abstract: Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are transmitted through sexual contact, and can manifest in the oral cavity. This study aimed to determine the oral manifestations of STDs. This was a literature review study using two databases namely Google scholar and PubMed. The results obtained six cross-sectional studies. Oral manifestations that could occur in patients with STD were necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis, necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis, necrotizing ulcerative stoma-titis, linear gingival erythema, oral candidiasis, sarcoma Kaposi, oral hairy leukoplakia, gonococcal stomati

Abstract Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis-periodontitis (ANUG/ NUP) is a relatively uncommon periodontal disease characterized by gingival necrosis and ulceration, pain, and bleeding. The purpose of this paper is to provide a review of current knowledge on ANUG/NUP. Current literature on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, immunology, predisposing factors, and treatment of ANUG/NUP is reviewed.

Purpose: Infection with HIV-1 virus has become a critical worldwide public health problem. The oral complications of HIV infection with its progression of impairment of the host response to combat infection present unique challenges to the periodontists. Material and Methods : Medline research was carried out to find relationship of the progression of HIV infection to the occurrence of oral lesions including the HIV-related periodontal diseases. Results: The linear gingival erythema, necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis, necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis and oral candidiasis are common lesions

Necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis (NUP) is characterized by soft tissue necrosis, rapid periodontal destruction, and interproximal bone loss. Unlike other periodontal diseases, it presents with substantial necrosis of gingival tissues, and loss of periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. Herewith, we present a case report of NUP in a patient of Libyan origin. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first case report from Libya in English literature.

The aim of this update was to evaluate the use of local and systemic antibiotics for the treatment of periodontal diseases. Due to the accumulation of bacteria in the form of dental plaque, the tissues and bone surrounding the teeth can become infected leading to periodontal diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis. The main purpose of periodontal therapy is to eliminate or control the undesired effects of these bacteria present in the oral cavity in the form of biofilms. The use of antibiotics in conjunction with mechanical instrumentation has been suggested for the successful treatment

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disease characterized by abnormal proliferation of bone marrow derived histiocytes followed by their deposition in tissues elsewhere in the body causing damage. Oral manifestations of LCH can sometimes be the only presenting symptoms or the first sign of a disseminated disease. Ulcerated lesions of oral mucosa are one of the common clinical manifestations and can help in early diagnosis of the disease when presented. Since the clinical features mimics several other diseases of oral and maxillofacial region it can be misdiagnosed easily as other pat

Abstract Three major forms of periodontal disease have been described in HIV-infected patients: linear gingival erythema (formerly HIV-associated gingivitis), necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis (formerly HIV-associated periodontitis), and acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis. Gingivitis refers to inflammation of the gingivae caused by oral microflora; when associated with changes in the bone it is referred to as periodontitis. Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis involves inflammation of the gingiva with soft tissue necrosis, but not bone loss. Some investigators have suggested that HI

Periodontal diseases comprise a group of infections that affect the supporting structures of the teeth: marginal and attached gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar bone. Acute gingival diseases—primarily herpetic gingivostomatitis and necrotizing gingivitis—are ulcerative conditions that result from specific viral and bacterial infection. Chronic gingivitis, however, is a non-specific inflammatory lesion of the marginal gingiva which reflects the bacterial challenge to the host when dental plaque accumulates in the gingival crevice. The development of chronic gingivitis is enha
