Abstract:
This study is founded on the hypothesis that there is a correlation between certain cognitive factors namely the final std. 10 examination mark and aptitude as measured by the Senior Aptitude Test ( RSA) on the one hand, and academic achievement in Afrikaans- Nederlands 3 (AFN 3) on the other. The test group for the study were the 64 students who wrote the final examination in AFN 3 at the PU for CHE in 1983. These students were mainly from the 1981 enrolment; a few had enrolled in 1980. The study progressed as follows: At first a literature study was undertaken (chapter 2) in which was mainly concentrated on those cognitive factors which could influence study in general and academic achievement in tertiary study in particular. In general it appeared that authoritative researchers are of the opinion that aptitude (as measured by the different aptitude tests) is significant in the prediction of academic achievement and that the final matriculation examination is, of all cognitive factors, the best indicator of academic achievement. Secondly an empirical study was undertaken (chapter 4). Data for this study was obtained from the Statistical Consultation Service of the PU for CHE. Upon enrolment at the university a certain number of first year students are required to write psychometrical tests. Results of these tests (part of which is the Senior Aptitude Tests, tests 1-10) and the students' final examination results, as well as the ensuing academic achievements are stored on computer. Thirdly, in an ex post facto approach eleven variables, namely SAT (1-10) and the final matriculation examination were brought in connection with the achievement in AFN 3 of the said test group. By using BMDP 9 R - and SAS computer programmes intercorrelations were calculated and multiple regression analysis were done in order to calculate the contribution of individual variables and combinations of variables to the variance in AFN 3 (chapter 5) . The results are as follows: (chapters 5 and 6) A combination of the abovementioned eleven variables represent only 17,7% of the variance in AFN 3 and the best application is to be found in the case of std. 10 and SAT 1 and 7, with a contribution of 12,5% to the variance in AFN 3. It is clear that the influence of individual and combined independent variables on the dependent variables is so low that it holds no practical value for the indication of academic achievements. The role of high and low std. 10 achievement as individual independent variables combined with SAT 1-10 in the variance of AFN 3 was inquired into. In a step-by-step regression analysis was found that low std. 10 achievement and SAT 1-10 represent 53,4% of the achievement variance in AFN 3 and low std. 10 achievement combined with SAT 1, 5, 7 and 10 represent 45,6% of the variance in AFN 3. (Appendix J and K). It can be assumed that a differential application of std. 10 achievement can represent significant results in the search for predictors of academic achievement.
Skripsie (MEd)--PU vir CHO, 1988

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2004.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Illustration and translation have so much in common that the theoretical "instruments" used to describe, substantiate and evaluate translated works, can also be used where picture books are concerned. These similarities include the fact that illustrations as well as translations function semiotically - both relay narratives by means of systems of signs or codes. As signs, the contents of translations and illustrations have meaning or obtain significance only once they are read by an individual - homo significons - in a specific context. Another significant similarity between translation and illustration is the fact that both deal with the intercultural transfer of a narrative. The theory of translation takes cognisance of the contextual and, from the perspective of gender and postcolonial studies, points to the fact that cultural differences (and the power imbalances and ideologies they often imply) are closely linked to translation strategies. The literary environment and the circumstances in which the translation (or picture book) is produced, are also relevant for the meaning that can be ascribed to the picture book. In the literary environment (and indeed in most academic disciplines) the didactic benefit of picture books is accentuated more or takes precedence over the aesthetic qualities which these may have. Key concepts and theorists for this study are: • illustrations and translations as rewritings can be worthy and influential renderings of the source text • intertextuality will be the undisputed starting point for the (inevitably interdisciplinary) study of picture books • the skopos-theory according to which the objective of the book greatly determines the appearance and meaning thereof • Riitta Oittinen's theory of translation according to carnivalism which focuses on the child receptor Geoff Moss' and Jens Thiele's reference to ambiguity and experimentation in picture books Edward Venuti's reference to two (apparently opposing) translation strategies, namely domestication and foreignization. With this study I conclude that meaning in translated picture books is brought to the text by all participants and can therefore never be completed. Picture book illustrations as aesthetic products demand that the rewriter experiment with the narrative in a carnavalistic and unrestricted manner. At the same time, however, the illustrator or tranlator should anchor this experimentation in reality by meeting other role players (publishers, educationalists, literary theorists, authors and readers) in dialogical rewriting.

Abstract:
In the diachronic studies of Afrikaans in the past, the focus used to be on the origin and early development of Afrikaans from Dutch. During the twentieth century, the philological school, with a tradition of researching all Cape-Dutch coloured texts in detail, was established through the work of J. du P. Scholtz and his students. Through their analyses, they estimated the stabilisation of Afrikaans as early as the end of the eighteenth century (for example Raidt, 1991:145; Ponelis, 1994:229). In the past few decades, however, this estimation has begun to receive criticism from other scholars, including Roberge (1994:159) and Deumert (2004:20). With the help of a corpus, Deumert (2004) has shown that there is substantial variation in Afrikaans letters as late as the early twentieth century, and this study expands on her work by researching the variation in published writing. This is done by focusing on verbs, as there is significant change from the Dutch verbal system to the Afrikaans verbal system. This study uses corpus linguistic research methods, and researches Dutch-Afrikaans variation in verbs in published Afrikaans texts, compiled in three corpora. The main corpus was compiled from all the Afrikaans writings of Totius (J.D. du Toit) in the publication Het Kerkblad from 1916 to 1922. Two control corpora are also used: the first was compiled from excerpts from published Afrikaans books for the same period, and the second was compiled from excerpts from Afrikaans periodicals for the same period. In order to compensate for the shortcomings of corpus data alone, normative works on Afrikaans from the relevant period are also taken into account, and there is shown which recommendations these works made about the relevant constructions, and how the corpus data correlates with these recommendations. Variation in six verbal constructions are analysed in this study: 1. End consonant t/n (for example gaat/gaan): the old (more Dutch) word forms are scarcely used in the corpora, while the modern Afrikaans word forms are almost fully established. 2. End consonant g (for example seg/sê): the old word forms are also scarcely used in the corpora, while the modern word forms take the lead. 3. Stem vowel (for example breng/bring): the old word forms are more frequent at the beginning of the period, followed by some uncertainty, with the modern word forms taking over by the end of the period. 4. Preterite (specifically had/gehad and werd/geword): there is great instability throughout, worsened by a distinction in use between main verbs and auxiliary verbs made by some authors. 5. Past participle (for example gedaan/gedoen): there is significant instability at the beginning of the period, but the modern word forms are used more frequently by the end of the period. 6. Perfect tense auxiliary verb (is/het): the old form is still used in the corpora, but the modern form is more frequent from the beginning, and becomes even more frequent towards the end. This data shows that there was still significant variation in Afrikaans under Dutch influence as late as the early twentieth century, and the correlation between the different corpora implies that the written language might have been much closer to the spoken language than had been previously assumed. It is further confirmed by the amount of attention this variation gets in the normative works from that period.
Thesis (M.A. (Afrikaans and Dutch))--North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2013

Abstract:
ENGLISH: The purpose of this study has been to compile a biography of the Reverend Kálmán Papp II, minister of the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van Afrika (since 1951) and progenitor of the Papp family in South Africa. Naturally his theological position as minister and preacher of the gospel of the Lord, Jesus Christ, will be looked at. The study consists of four chapters. In the first chapter, which deals with Papp's historical backgrounds, the history, land and language of the Hungarian nation, the history and ethos of the Reformed Church of Hungary, and the history of Papp's forefathers, with specific reference to the ministers of religion, are dealt with briefly. In more detail, the second chapter describes Papp's childhood and student years in Hungary (1924-1946): his exciting toddler and primary school years in Mándok, his fatherless high school years at the Lévai Jószef Gymnasium in Miskolc, his bustling student years at the Count Tissza István University of Debrecen, his gripping experiences during World War II, and his departure to the Netherlands for post graduate study. Papp's residence in the Netherlands, his two years at the University of Utrecht (1947-1949) and his hasty emigration to South Africa, are dealt with in chapter three. In the last chapter of this study, which consists of six sections, Papp’s interesting course of life in South Africa (1949-2008) is described. His arrival and settling in South Africa, student years at the University of Pretoria, admission to the ministry, temporary service as a candidate minister, and his marriage, are described in the first four sections. The fifth section deals with Papp's ministry of forty uninterrupted years in the Krugersdorp congregation of the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk (1951-1991). This section forms the main part of this study and is subdivided into four subsections, each covering a period of approximately one decade. The first subsection covers Papp's reception in the congregation, the short but fulfilling period of his first joint ministry, his first publications and public appearances, the birth of his children, the formation of two new congregations (Magaliesburg in 1953 and Krugersdorp-Oos in 1954), his dedicated involvement in synodical activities of the church, unselfish assistance and support to the Hungarian refugees of 1956, the loyalty portrayed in his involvement in the cultural life of Krugersdorp, his diligent promotion of ecumenical relations and his part in the seventieth anniversary of the Krugersdorp congregation. The second subsection describes Papp's sympathetic involvement with the Jac van Belkum orphanage in Krugersdorp, the period of an unhappy second joint ministry in the congregation, the compelled forming in 1964 of a third new congregation (Krugersdorp-Noord) Papp's strong and enthusiastic guidance in the building of a new parsonage and the transformation of an old abattoir into a church hall, as well as the celebration of the seventy-fifth anniversary of his congregation. In the third subsection Papp's intense involvement in the community life of Krugersdorp, more specifically with the Sterkfontein Psychiatric Hospital and Burgershoop Primary School, and his zealous work in the church's Outjo congregation in the former South West Africa are dealt with. Then there are also referred to the celebration of his twenty-fifth year in the ministry and the ordination of two of his sons and his daughter in law. The fourth subsection covers the birth of Papp's first grandchildren, his active involvement in the Bible Festival of 1983, and the reception and accommodation of various family members, guests and visitors from abroad. Several high lights of his life are also described in this section: his amnesty, the centenary celebrations of his congregation, which coincided with his retirement, and the publication of his album on the history of the Krugersdorp congregation. However, several set backs in Papp's life are also described in this section - the personal problems of his children, the failure of the marriages of both of his sons in ministry and the passing away of various family members and friends. The last section of this study describes Papp's seventeen years after retirement (1992-2008) - years in which several high lights and set backs occurred. Amongst the high lights were Papp's prominent part in the Day of the Covenant celebrations at Paardekraal, the acknowledgement of his service to the community of Krugersdorp, the re-admission of his eldest son and daughter in law into the ministry, three trips to Hungary, the celebration of his eightieth birthday, his fiftieth wedding anniversary and his fiftieth year in office as a church minister, and last but not the least, the conferment of a honorary professorate. Amongst the set backs were several illnesses and surgeries, and worst of all, the tragic death of his third son. The study concludes with a summarized theological evaluation and an appreciative description of Papp's exceptional gifts and unique personality.
Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2011.
Church History and Church Policy
unrestricted

Abstract:
Thesis (PhD)-- Stellenbosch University, 2005.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A study of poetry by six contemporary women in the Afrikaans and Dutch-speaking worlds points toward a multi-focal approach. While texts by poets of a marked diversity are presented as aesthetic objects, the scope of my research has been determined by considerations of gender, language and culture. The central line of investigation concerns the interplay between the poem as an artefact and the changing socio-cultural contexts by which the respective poets have been informed. My dissertation was inspired by Pierre Bourdieu's argument in favour of a fusion between the close reading practices of the New Critics (and in this case, their Dutch counterparts, the Merlinists) and the contextual approach advocated by literature sociologists. Concomitantly the art philosophical standpoint of Marcia Eaton and the views on the écriture féminine or "women's style of writing" held by Helene Cixous are applied to poetry. By incorporating insights from adjacent disciplines and thereby decentering the relative autonomy of the poetic text, I hope to demonstrate how the study of literature could acquire new relevance, either by expanding its own parameters, or by enriching the field of cultural and gender studies. In conclusion I regard the poetry written by contemporary women as a polyphonic discourse voicing women's newly-found position as subjects and challenging notions such as a monolithic "female identity" and the marginalization of "women's poetry". From this perspective, the aesthetic value of the poetic genre is paralleled by its function as a source of knowledge and a cultural agency.

Abstract:
Thesis (LLM) -- Stellenbosch University, 1992.
Includes bibliography
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The central concern of this thesis is retrenchment. It begins with an overview of the law concerning dismissal whereafter the general position relating to retrenchment and the guidelines of the Industrial Court in that regard, are discussed. Reference is also made to retrenchment on the grounds of insolvency, closure and merger of companies. The legal position in South Africa is compared with that in Dutch labour law, with the purpose of the determining which of the two systems offer the best protection to employees faced with retrenchment. Two criteria were applied, ie that of ,~srtainty of law and the level of protection offered by the law. The differences between the two systems are substantial. While South Africa has a common law system, the Dutch have a civil law system. A second difference is the fact that in the Netherlands there exists a very strong state intervention in employment affairs to a far larger degree than in South Africa. Dutch dismissal law can be called preventive and pro-active, while the South African law appears to be largely re-active. The general conclusion is that workers' ri9hts in the event of retrenchment are more secure in Dutch labour law, and that the Dutch system offers a useful point of reference for reform of the South African position.

It is done within the theorectical framework of the study of Creole genesis as suggested by the gradualists (John Singler, Jacques Arends and Philip Baker) and the Complementary theory of Salikoko Mufwene. These approaches stress teh use of socio-historical material. In line with this the work of historians on aspects of the early Cape society, ca. 1590-1720, especially the number, distribution, origins and mutal contact between the three main groups at the Cape, viz. the Khoikhoi, slaves and European settlers is used.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA (VA))--Stellenbosch University, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The hypothesis of this study is that literary theory and theories concerning space, landscape and the construction of identity, are not only applicable to written texts, but also to visual texts. To prove this, the relevant theories were applied in the analyses of four selected Afrikaans and Dutch picture books, as well as to my own picture book, the practical component of this MA study. Space, which is transformed into landscape when observation becomes perception, interacts with the construction of identity in texts in different ways, inter alia because changes regarding space lead to changes regarding identity. Although social identity (how others see us) is important, it can lead to stereotyping, while a focus on selfidentity (how we see ourselves) is conducive in treating children as individuals – as is done regarding adults – with a wide variety of interests and inclinations. Space, landscape and the construction of identity are important vehicles to convey meaning in narratives – not only in literature for adults, but also in picture books, where it can play a role in both written text and illustrations to bring extra depth and dimension. Illustrations are most frequently in a complementary relationship with words because they activate additional meaning, but it can also convey messages in a contrapuntal or even contradictory manner. The utilization of these aspects links with the fact that many South African and Dutch writers and illustrators are of the opinion that both children and adults enjoy really successful children’s books. This study indicates that the use of theories on landscape and identity in the analyses of picture books can lead to the discovery of deeper meanings, which show the literary merit of the texts. In this regard, illustrations should not be regarded as having only an aesthetic, supplementary function, but should be appreciated as an equal partner in conveying meaning, which gives an extra dimension to picture books.

Abstract:
Reformed Christians utilise article 36 of the Belgic Confession (BC) to state the Godly calling of civil authorities. This confession may however be in conflict with the South African constitution. According to article 36 authorities have, in accordance with the keeping of order, a duty concerning the removal of false religion. The constitution guarantees everyone in South Africa freedom of religion. This study thus investigates the following stated problem: To what does God call South-African authorities within the constitutional democracy in the light of art. 36 and how can they fulfil this calling? The investigation has been undertaken in line with the argument that the principals of art. 36 are not only Biblical but should also still be used as a starting point to identify the calling of South African authorities concerning the keeping of order as well as the protection of the ministry of the Holy Word and the Christian life according to this Word. The following three investigations were then launched: * A dogmahistorical and theological-ethical investigation Chapter 2 focuses on the context in which the BC originated. It was drafted to convince Roman Catholic minded authorities to stop persecuting Reformed Christians as they - in contrast with some revolutionary Anabaptists - wanted to obey the government. Reformed Christians wanted to live according to the Word (which requires obedience to the authorities). If the authorities protected the ministry of the Word, peace and order would be promoted. Chapter 3 explains art. 36. This explanation is complicated by the fact that the article has been changed over time. In certain instances it has been interpreted to mean that God, in light of the close bond between church and state at that time, calls civil authorities to persecute heretics even with force. The article however actually calls authorities to protect the ministry of the Word and so doing support the removal of heresy. The article takes a narrow view of the true form of the true religion. * A constitutional investigation Chapter 4 describes the South African constitutional democracy as well as its origin and indicates what (sometimes unrecognised) role the Reformed tradition played in forging constitutional democracy. Subsequently the fundamental values and forthcoming stipulations concerning the freedom of conscience and religion are highlighted. Although authorities do not - in a juridical sense - contend with what would be the true form of the true religion, this study has found the constitutional values and forthcoming stipulations broadly agree with Biblical principles. Yet South African authorities interpret these values and stipulations in accordance with secularist / humanistic beliefs. * A contextual investigation This final chapter investigates how well the current constitutional framework enables (chapter 4) South African authorities to fulfil the calling (chapter 2 and 3).The final conclusion is that this framework does indeed enable these authorities to fulfil the calling by recognising, protecting and expanding the fundamental values, freedoms and rights which have been constitutionally entrenched in order that every one has the space and opportunity to utilise these rights and freedoms to live according to the gospel of Jesus Christ in all spheres of life This task undoubtedly includes that the authorities should protect the ministry of the Word by pertinently ensuring that churches have the opportunity to minister the Word to everyone. It has been found that authorities should preferably take up the attitude of the active plural option towards religion as this option is most suitable for fulfilling their calling.
Thesis (Ph.D. (Church and Dogma History))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2011.

Abstract:
Magister Artium - MA
South Africa

Abstract:
Frans Vredenrijk Engelenburg (1863-1938) played a major role in the development and expansion of Afrikaans and the Afrikaans academic culture - especially in the northern part of South Africa. As a Dutch intellectual, lawyer and journalist in the nineteenth century South African Republic (Transvaal), he in particular played an important role as advisor and opinion maker from the 1890s onward. One of his biggest achievements was the key role that he played in the establishment of De Zuid Afrikaanse Akademie voor Taal, Letteren en Kunst in 1909. This study is the first part of a more comprehensive biographical project on the life of Engelenburg and the role he fulfilled in the history of the Akademie and South Africa until the thirties of the twentieth century. Since the 1600s the Engelenburg family has played a prominent role in the community where they lived. Aside from the high positions they had held for centuries before, they had in the fourth and again in the sixth generation married into noble families. This contributed to their important position in the community. Due to circumstances Engelenburg was not raised in the Engelenburg milieu. A family break in 1836 was the cause that Engelenburg's father, as a baby, was spirited away from this family milieu. Engelenburg received an extraordinarily good schooling. The solid intellectual foundation already laid then, to a large extent determined the course of his life. He was at the Stedelijk Gymnasium Arnhem when he met Marie Koopmans-De Wet (1834-1906), an aunt by marriage who lived in Cape Town, when on a visit to Europe. She was his soul mate and acted as a mentor and advisor to Engelenburg. The friendship strengthened with the years. He already at school had the desire to visit South Africa one day. His parents' divorce when he was still a student at the University of Leyden, steered his life in a very different direction than what he had foreseen for himself. The divorce was to a large extent the reason that, although he had studied law, he discarded the notion of a career in law after only a year. His decision to follow a career in journalism affected the rest of his life. The Transvaal War (1880-1881) meant that the Dutch developed an admiration for the Transvaalers for the determination and courage they displayed in their attempts to defeat the British army. President Paul Kruger's call shortly after the war that the Transvaal needed young Dutchmen further encouraged Engelenburg to come to South Africa. Previously Engelenburg had for a year worked for Fred Hogendorp at the Dagblad van Suidholland en s’Gravenhage in The Hague. Circumstances abruptly changed when Hogendorp suddenly became insane. During the same time, the owner of De Volksstem newspaper in Pretoria had committed suicide and Engelenburg seized the work opportunity. Within a matter of three months, he arrived in the Transvaal. Within a month after his arrival he was appointed chief editor of De Volksstem. He had studied the Transvaal situation thoroughly and by means of the newspaper and through tireless efforts, he contributed to improving the farming community’s cultural literacy. The education situation in the Transvaal enjoyed his constant attention. After the Anglo-Boer War (ABW) (1899-1902), he continued to work towards improving the education system in the Transvaal. He early on became involved in the Transvaal University College (later University of Pretoria). Before the ABW he did everything possible to promote the Dutch language to the Boer people. However, after the war he realised that Afrikaans had a rightful place, and he, in addition to Dutch, became a champion for the Afrikaans language. The battle between the proponents of Dutch and Afrikaans respectively, increased after the ABW. To achieve unity of action between the two groups, De Zuid Afrikaanse Akademie voor Taal, Letteren and Kunst was founded in 1909. Behind the scenes Engelenburg was one of the major driving forces to assist with the founding of the organisation. As a board member and later as chairman, he gave impetus to the Akademie. In 2009 the organisation celebrated its centenary. This is an important milestone, especially seen in the light of the current political climate in South Africa. The Akademie can now be regarded as a monument to Engelenburg as the fruit of his labour and perseverance during the first three decades of the Akademie’s existence.
Thesis (M.A. (History))--North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2010.

Abstract:
Modern lingusitics consist of several schools of thought with diverse approaches. The Systemic School consists of a group of linguists who primarily study language within the social context. They thus have an interpersonal approach. This approach within British Linguistics originated in the work of Malinowski in the twenties. In the sixties it was M.A.K. Halliday in particular who gave direction to this approach by placing it within a more scientific theoretical framework. In the seventies Systemic Linguistics developed in a generative direction. This development led to several generative models, and, eventually, to Fawcett's divergence from the existing school to an intrapersonal approach which approximated some of Chomsky's views. The historical background and development of Systemic Linguistics is outlined briefly in the first three chapters of the thesis. The specific variation of the Scale and Category model that is used in chapters 4 and 5 to describe aspects of Afrikaans grammar is also explained. This description of aspects of Afrikaans grammar indicates that, in respect of surface grammar, the Scale and Category model does not contribute much to the existing descriptions of Afrikaans within other theoretical frameworks. In respect of the deep grammar, on the other hand, the systemic approach has been shown to be a gain. It illustrates interesting underlying differences between clauses, and offers a wide field of research into Afrikaans. The last chapter of the thesis is an evaluation of the advantages and weaknesses of the Scale and Category model, as well as aspects of Systemic Theory in general. Practical applications of Systemic Grammar are indicated, and research possibilities in respect of a systemic description of Afrikaans are identified. Systemic Linguistics has its strong points and weak points . Because of their specific view on the language phenomenon, the systemicists' approach is, in my opinion, a very fruitful way to study language. Because of the growing influence of Systemic Linguistics on English Linguistics, it can no longer be ignored. This thesis, amongst other things, attempts to contribute to the introduction of Systemic Theory to Afrikaans Linguistics.
Thesis (Ph.D.) - University of Natal, Durban, 1986.

SUMMARY This mini-thesis focuses on the study of Fantasy literature in the multicultural Afrikaans classroom. Different genres, ego fable , myth, folktale, fairytale, legend and science fiction will be looked at. The study will also try to look at the similarities present in the fantasy literature of English, Afrikaans, Zulu and seSotho and the implications thereof in the multicultural Afrikaans class.
Thesis (M.A.) - University of Natal, Durban, 1999.

Abstract:
This study examines Agaat (2004), the second novel in the oeuvre of Marlene van Niekerk, as both a postcolonial text and a farm novel. Firstly a theoretical perspective is given on postcolonialism, with specific reference to typical phenomena in Afrikaans postcolonial literature. Subsequently, a short historical overview is given of the Afrikaans farm novel by distinguishing between "normative" farm novels and "contesting" farm novels. Typical characteristics of the Afrikaans farm novel are also discussed. By discussing three key aspects of Marlene van Niekerk's Agaat, I demonstrate why Agaat can be seen as a postcolonial text and how this novel differs from earlier Afrikaans farm novels. The first aspect is the representation of coloured people within the household, specifically focussing on Agaat Lourier's powerful role as worker for the De Wet family on Grootmoedersdrift, as well as the hierarchical shift of Agaat's position on the farm from worker to owner of the farm after Milla de Wet's death. In Agaat (2004) the coloured worker is given a voice, something that did not readily occur in earlier farm novels in the first half of the twentieth century (Coetzee, 2000: 2). An important question that receives attention in this study, is how the identity of Agaat is formed by Milla who trains Agaat to behave in a certain way. Does Agaat lose her identity when she is colonised by Milla mimicking Milla's behaviour, and does she then become a product of Milla becoming "almost the same, but not quite" (Bhabha, 1994: 86)? The second key aspect deals with the role and representation of women characters in Agaat (2004). Here attention is paid to Agaat and Milla who jointly rule the farm and its inhabitants resulting in a constant power struggle between these two women. In Agaat (2004) patriarchal authority is undermined and the relationship between Milla and Agaat, as Neil Cochrane (2005: 216) points out, can be seen as a replica of the relationship between the coloniser (Milla) and the colonised (Agaat). The third key aspect focuses on land and landownership, by referring to relevant literature such as Ampie Coetzee's 'n Hele os vir 'n ou broodmes. Grond en die plaasnarratief sedert 1595 (2000). The issue of land ownership is foregrounded in Agaat (2004), as in lM Coetzee's Disgrace (1999), when Agaat becomes the owner of the farm after Jakkie (Milla's son) returns to Canada where he works as an ethnomusicologist. With my focus on the three aspects mentioned above I assess Marlene van Niekerk's contribution to the development of the Afrikaans farm novel within a postcolonial context.
Thesis (M.A.) - University of KwaZulu-Natal, 2006.

Abstract:
This article has as focus an environmental education analysis of ten selected poems from the book Skakering (Opperman and Coetzee 1991) to associate the problem of environmental education with the teaching of a humanities subject like Afrikaans, and specifically in the light of the poem as text. It has as its aim the teaching of a genre, to relate in this regard the single text (the poem text) to the environment and environmentally associated problems. In this respect an approach which is aimed at selected texts in Skakering (Opperman and Coetzee 1991) shall possibly accentuate both teachers and pupils' relationship with nature. This article will concentrate on the following: a definition of environmental education as phenomenon which links up the concept ecology, general overview of the important and relevant sources, a theoretical explanation of the concept environmental education, a brief discussion of existing studies that pays attention to the environment and environmental education in the literature, the analysis of the contents of poems that represent certain environmental problems, and an awareness of the pedagogical implications for the teacher.
Thesis (M.A.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2001.

Abstract:
This article researches the attitude of learners to the oral activities in the Afrikaans Second Language classroom. The apparent discrepancy between learners' communicative competence and the oral year mark awarded by school-based educators is looked at. It seems as though neither educators nor learners participate very enthusiastically in oral activities in the classroom. Educators on the one hand appear to be preoccupied with assessment and the completion of a syllabus rather than with developing the communicative competence of learners. Learners on the other hand fear being censured and mocked by their peers and the assessment process most commonly used in the classroom compounds this anxiety. In Section 4 suggestions are made for reducing assessment anxiety so as to encourage learners to communicate spontaneously in Afrikaans. Learners of an additional language need to be provided with the opportunity to engage in oral activities that elicit the use of the target language in such a way that the learner's enthusiasm to participate neutralises the fear of using linguistic structures that they feel they have not yet mastered.
Thesis (M.A.)-University of Natal, 2001.

Abstract:
Representations of Dutch contacts with coastal inhabitants of Africa, 1475-1652. Prior to 1996, South African Dutch studies had largely been determined by traditional rigid historical and geographic boundaries set in 1933. The framework exclusively focused on the period after the arrival of Van Riebeeck in 1652 to 1925 (when Afrikaans replaced Dutch as an official language) and on topics regarded as typically South African. Siegfried Huigen in 'De Weg naar Monomotapa' (1996) not only questioned these limitations but introduced a revised time frame including the period “about 1596 to 1652”. The revised framework has provided an opportunity to study texts prior to 1652 including both the earliest recorded Dutch contacts with the coastal inhabitants of Africa as well as the significant 1595 record of the initial Dutch cross-cultural encounters on the coast of Southern Africa. Where the role of the Dutch East India Company after 1602 had previously been considered foremost, the maritime forces of the Dutch States General and independent Dutch traders before 1602 and the activities of the Dutch West Indies Company after 1621 on the entire African coast had attracted little attention. Contact between the Dutch and coastal inhabitants of Africa and the textual representations of such contacts had contributed to a more extensive Dutch frame of reference than had previously been presumed. Previous assumptions attributing the nature of representations to the frequency and length of contacts had somehow not accounted for similar factors not influencing representations of coastal inhabitants elsewhere in Africa nor had the actual extent of the Dutch frame of reference been fully considered. Since the initial 1595 textual representation of Willem Lodewycksz describing the contact between the Dutch and Khoikhoi in Mossel Bay, the texts have had a profound influence on the South African discourse. Comparative studies of the initial representations and early 20th century compilations of the primary texts indicate that the elucidation prevalent in the more recent works has been the source of questionable interpretations and conclusions that have erroneously been attributed to the late sixteenth century seafaring scribes.
Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2008.

Abstract:
This study examines the relationship between father and son in the novel Indische duinen (1994, 2002) by Adriaan van Dis within the context of post-war and postcolonial Dutch society. It relates the process by which an adult son, 36 years after the death of his father, comes to terms with the memory of a man whom he has always seen as unreasonably strict, violent and even cruel. During this process the son discovers the effects of colonialism, war, the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies (subsequently Indonesia) and the process of rapid decolonisation and repatriation to the Netherlands upon his father. For the father the latter experiences amount to what Kaja Silverman (1992: 55) refers to as "historical trauma". The experiences that shaped his father and influenced his behaviour towards his son are linked to what Paul Ricoeur (1992: 121) would refer to as the father's "narrative identity" and his sense of masculinity (Cormell, 1995: 77 - 81) which have both been marginalised within the "dominant fiction" (Silverman, 1992: 54) of the postcolonial society in which he has been forced to live. As the son discovers the father through a process of retelling both his father's story and the story of their relationship he is able to gain sense of understanding and closure. Regarding issues of race and gender in Dutch colonialism and the trauma of postcolonial alienation this study draws upon the insights of E.M. Beekman (1988 and 1998), Frances Gouda (1998), Elsbeth Locher-SchoIten (1995), Rob Nieuwenhuys (1982), Edy Seriese (1995), Ann Laura Stoler (1992, 1995 and 1997) and Peter van Zonneveld (1995, 2002 and 2003).
Thesis (M.A.) - University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2004.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to determine how literature teaching in a multicultural context can be used effectively to promote intercultural communication and understanding in South Africa, a relatively young democracy in a period of transition. A selection of short stories from the chosen short story anthologies, Taxi (1996) and Keerpunt(1995), will be analysed with reference to both key elements from theories about intercultural communication and the criteria for multicultural texts. The study will be concluded by a statement about the suitability of the chosen anthologies to promote intercultural communication and understanding through the teaching of literature within a multicultural context.
Thesis (M.A.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2001.

Abstract:
The German place nomenclature in South west Africa, under the influence of various toponymic and linguistic factors, spontaneously developed into a unique toponymicon. The specific nature of this toponymicon is marked by a large number of inherited name transfers from Europe on the one hand and a partially or fully germanized local toponymicon with numerous examples of translations, adopted loan names and substitutions on the other hand. This unique toponymicon mainly originated from the inter linguistic interaction between German, Afrikaans and the indigenous languages of the territory. The supposition on which the theoretical concept and research method was formulated and executed, is the dichotomous nature of the place names as onomastic and linguistic signs. The German place names have certain general, but also intrinsic toponymic and linguistic features in common. This prompted the diachronic and synchronic analysis of the place names on both linguistic and onomastic levels. The onomastic approach entailed the analysis of the structural composition of the place names; the toponymic motives; the interlinguistic contact situation; the origins, etymologies and semantic aspects of the names. On the linguistic level the names were analyzed according to syntagmatic and paradigmatic criteria and categorized according to linguistic principles pertaining to proper nouns, specifically toponyms or place names. The conclusion was reached that the German South West African toponymicon, despite the large number of name transfers that occurred and the close resemblance with its European origins which is still clearly discernible, appears on the formal and functional level as a unique, yet true Southern African toponymicon .
Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of Natal, Durban, 1986.

Abstract:
In this dissertation it is indicated that gender is a social construct, while sex is biologically determined. The concept of gender refers to that which is understood within a certain society to define masculinity and femininity, the power struggle between the two sexes, as well as the social limitations which are placed on people's behaviour as a result of gender. Children's and young adult's literature exert a great influence on the youth's idea of gender roles. The social and cultural history of South African society is used in this study to explore stereotypical gender roles in Afrikaans youth literature. The role of a patriarchal society, homosexuality, and changing perceptions of gender roles are investigated. It is indicated that in both English and Afrikaans children's and young adult's literature the portrayal of gender roles is often unrealistic, stereotypical, and contains sexist language. Two novels namely, Gooi horn in die slool (1971) and Skilpoppe (1998), are analysed using the following categories: male or female author, representation of gender roles, and use of sexist language. The teaching implications of the findings for the second language learner are then articulated.
Thesis (M.A.) - University of Natal, Durban, 2001.

Abstract:
A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Arts, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
Since Eybers went to live in Amsterdam in 1961 her poetry has always been simultaneously published in Amsterdam and Cape Town. Nine of her sixteen collections since she made her debut in 1936 can therefore be called "Dutch" in the sense that they have not only been published in the Netherlands, but have also been reviewed there extensively and very positively. She is regarded as a poet belonging to the Dutch literary tradition, and was awarded the highest prize for Dutch literature in 1991. All of this has happened without her losing her South African readership or status as one of the greatest Afrikaans poets. In this study I present an overview of the situation in Holland with regard to the scant acceptance and Jack of knowledge of Afrikaans and of its literature at the time Eybers went to live there. The uniqueness of her Dutch acceptance is analysed against this background. An overview of her Dutch and South African reviews (1962-1992)clearly shows that Dutch reviewers have always been fascinated by the fact that they can understand her work in spite of the fact that Afrikaans is otherwise considered a language from which texts need to be translated into Dutch in order to be readable and marketable. Because Eybers lives in the Netherlands she shares a frame of reference with her Dutch readers. Her language has incorporated many typical Dutch phrases, allowing her poetry to become more accessible and familiar to Dutch readers. Basically, though, she still writes in Afrikaans and South African readers still read and regard her as an Afrikaans poet In her poems - which often describe her state of voluntary exile and In which memories of the vast South African landscape are described - South African readers therefore find much which is familiar to them. Her themes -Iove.Ionellness, ageing, death, estrangement - are universal. In spite of this wide acceptance an in depth study or the particularities of the Eybers Idiolect and fields of reference clearly shows that both sets of leaders are constantly faced with quite severe comprehension problems. I therefore argue that the work of Eybers offers a unique example of "making it strange", the element which the Russian Formalists regarded as the essentiai difference between natural language and poetic language. The "double world" and "go between" language of Eybers result in a blend of intimacy and strengeness which two sets of readers experience in different ways. I argue that particular "ungrammaticalities" make her "Dutch" volumes "doubly poetical". Formalist, reception and semiotic theories are employed in a descriptive explanation of the Eybers phenomenon.
Andrew Chakane 2018

Abstract:
In this study the aim is to investigate the phenomenon known as the objectification of the human image, a phenomenon which is a factor of constant literary import in poetry. The term "objectification" tries to give expression to that which the poet has made the object of his concern. It therefore concerns the conscious unfettering of the ego by creating an objective image. In spite of the obvious occurrence of this phenomenon in poetry, no substantial research has as yet been undertaken by scholars in the field of Afrikaans lyrical poetry. As a result of the non-existence of any fundamental theory on this subject, this study is mainly of an empirical nature. All possible objectifying techniques are therefore identified and analyzed in texts which are deemed appropriate for the research. A difficulty to be overcome was the many connotations implied by the term objectification. In the Afrikaans poetry the• Dertigers were taken as a point of departure. ln the work of the Dutch poets only the poetry of Martinus Nijhoff was investigated. The study has shown that objectification is brought about by various poetical techniques which make it possible for the reader to visualize an image objectively. During the investigation a significant feature noted was that self- objectification also formed a separate category. This means that the poet is in fact subjectively involved with reference to the ego- image created by him. The essence of objectification as a phenomenon in the process of literary communication, lies in the specific idea which addresses the reader by means of the image. This means that the poet creates images with a specific aim in view. In other words, a definite meaning or truth is contained in the image, and this must be discovered by the reader. This investigation has shown that objectification is a consistent phenomenon in Afrikaans poetry since the Dertigers. It is viewed as a literary technique; in general, a universal literary phenomenon.
Thesis (MA)--PU vir CHO, 1986.

Abstract:
The high sales figures of 'n Droe wit seisoen (Brink, 1979) and De aanslag (Mulisch, 1982) indicate that these novels were extremely well received by the reading public. High sales figures are, however, no guarantee that these novels can be regarded as literary texts. An analysis of both texts by means of certain reception-theoretical concepts may contribute to such a literary evaluation being possible. Concepts from both reception aesthetics and the so-called Wirkungs Asthetik are used. The reception aesthetics concept of the actual reader and his empirical contributions, i.e. reviews, letters in newspapers and journals are focused on because these can contribute to the formation of a horizon of expectations. The reader's knowledge of the genre to which the text belongs, the writer's oeuvre and his view of reality are discussed in sections 2.2.1, 3.3 and 4.3. Wirkungs Asthetik (an aesthetics of reception activity) provides the concepts of implicit author, implicit reader and lacunae, which are used to analyse the texts in order to evaluate whether or not the text can lead the reader to relate the elements with one another and, in so doing, come to a certain understanding. (These concepts are dealt with in sections 2.3, 3.3.3.2, 3.3.3.3 and 4.5.2.) While Wirkungs Astethik does not make use of the actual reader, it does not mean that it is only a hermeneutical investigation. A change in emphasis has taken place, viz. the. diverse potential of meaning is now investigated by an informed reader (discussed in section 2.3.3 ). The analysis of a text as is done in this study, can briefy be summarised as follows: the experience of the reader based merely on the level of events in the novel (2.6, 3.2 and 4.2); an expectation with regard to the text which is either confirmed or refuted (2.2, 3.3 and 4.3); an analysis of the structural narrative level by means of techniques which include the notion of perspective and tension among others; • an interpretation of the level of meaning on the basis of a stimulus provided by the structural level, i.e. an interpretation of symbolism and myth (2.8, 3.7 and 4.6). If the text continues to reveal new dimensions of meaning for the same reader on subsequent readings, one can then conclude that the novel can be regarded as having literary quality. It is concluded that a text-immanent study is a prerequisite for communication between text and reader. It was found, however, that the horizon of expectations created by reviews played an important role in the reception of Brink's 'n Droe wit seisoen (discussed in 3.3). The reader's horizon of expectations with regards to Mulisch's De aanslag is based on the reader's knowledge of his oeuvre (discussed in 4.3). In the concluding section of the argument certain interesting parallels between die oeuvres of Brink and Mulisch are noted. For example, both are innovators, politically outspoken, committed and both use a mixture of fiction and faction (See 5.2). Both novels are realistic texts which transcend the level of setting and time: in the case of 'n Droe wit seisoen this is achieved through the strong message against domination while, in the case of De aanslag, this is done by the loaded symbolic dimensions and references and by the existential question of guilt versus innocence. Above all, it is the human tragedy which grips the reader's attention. The narrators in both novels do not attempt to provide instant solutions but leave the reader with certain moral questions which, in turn, become an attack on passivity and indifference. In conclusion it has been found that the sales figures provide an indication that these texts are experienced as having literary qualities because of the new dimensions opened to the informed reader on subsequent readings.
Proefskrif (DLitt) PU vir CHO, 1990.
