Abstract This article tries to find an answer to the central question whether the Dutch Reformed pastor and professor Petrus Hofstede de Groot (1802-1886) was a dominocrat. Hofstede de Groot was pastor in Ulrum and professor at the university in Groningen. My contribution is an elaboration of the oral book review I held in 2017 at the presentation of Jasper Vree’s book Kerk, huis, school en staat: Leven, werk en vriendenkring van P. Hofstede de Groot (1844-1886). In my article I explain the meaning of ‘dominocrat’ and also ‘Dominocrat’ and explore the synodical acts of the Dutch Reformed Churc

AbstractH. J. Spijker (1801-1870) was one of the most important liberal administrators of the Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk (Netherlands Reformed Church) of the second half of the nineteenth century. He was first heard of in a discussion about a revision of the 'Algemeen Reglement van de Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk' (The constitution of the church). In this discussion he proved to be an ardent supporter of a more democratic church structure. In 1852, Spijker became a member of the 'Algemene Synodale Commissie', the Synod's executive committee. The publication of Buddhist mission: ‘Christian’ barbarism in Europe, translated by Louis Adriën Bähler (18671941), a Christian anarchist and pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church, led to the founding of the Reformed League in the Dutch Reformed Church (Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk). The classis censured Bähler, but Synod rehabilitated him and therefore the orthodox Reformed within the church charged that Synod’s actions revealed its powerlessness to maintain doctrinal discipline. Bähler’s Buddhist leanings have drawn much attention. This article places Bähler’s sympathy for pietism and mysticism

Abstract While the interest for the involvement of Dutch churches with colonial slavery has grown over the past years it has not yet been attempted to systematically collect and analyze ecclesiastical ownership for the Dutch colonial empire. This paper hopes to tempt scholars in doing so, by making a first exploration of ecclesial ownership (churches, ecclesiastical institutes and ministers) in one former Dutch colony—Suriname. With respect to Suriname the present paper focuses on two churches, the Evangelical Lutheran Church (Evangelisch-Lutherse Kerk) and the Dutch Reformed Church (Nederduit

The public character of the churchThe subject of this article is the public character of the church. In the Netherlands one can make a distinction between three actual models. Each of them has had influence on the relationship between church and society in a particular time of history. The first model of A Kuyper, has its roots in the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands (Gereformeerde Kerken) and was important in the first half of the 20th Century. The second model is rooted in the Reformed Church (Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk) of the Netherlands in the period after World War 2. The third model

This article attends to the relationship between minor and major assemblies as prescribed by the foundational principles of Reformed church polity proposed by Mary-Anne Plaatjies-Van Huffel. It reviews the limited autonomy of local congregations and the authority of broader assemblies in the Church Order of Dordrecht (1618/19), the touchstone of Dutch Reformed church polity. It considers the challenge to historic Reformed church polity posed by the ecclesiology of the Doleantie, a secession from the Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk (NHK) in 1886 under the leadership of Abraham Kuyper. In this article, the authors discuss the origin, development and practice of a set of questions the Dienstboek voor de Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk in ontwerp (1955) offers for the Lord’s Supper preparation services. In answering the questions, churchgoers profess their faith, just as they did when they sought admission to the Lord’s Supper. The editing of the questions changed over time. The questions originated in East Frisia, but in their later editing were partly stamped by the Kirchenordnung (1563) of the Palatinate. According to an obituary written by a colleague, Allard Pierson (1831–1896) had epitomized Dutch intellectual history for almost forty years. Like Pierson, the writer had started his career as a minister in the Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk (Dutch Reformed Church) but resigned when he could no longer come to terms with his religious doubts. After his resignation, Pierson still obtained a teaching position at the theological faculty in Heidelberg, but he ended his career as a professor of art history in Amsterdam. Nevertheless, he remained fascinated by religion and especially the religion of his
