Abstract:
Forty mixed breed pre – pubertal male rabbits were used to determine the effect of treated (24 hours soaked and 48 hours soaked in water) and untreated neem rind as inclusion at 10% in rabbits diet on performance (final weight gain, average daily weight gain, average daily feed intake and feed to gain ratio), reproductive characteristics and daily sperm production. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance. Significant (p<0.05) reduction was observed for testes weight, paired testes weight, relative testes weight, testes volume, testes density and daily sperm production from bucks both treated and untreated neem rind when compared to those on the control diet. Soaking neem rind in water up to 48hours appears not to reduce its anti-nutritional and anti-fertility principles.

Abstract:
The Citrus rind borer also known as citrus pock caterpillar is still the most critical pest-infesting pummelo (Citrus maxima Merr.) in the Philippines particularly in Davao region. Management of the pest is indispensable for successful pummelo production. The study was conducted to determine the best cost-effective treatment to manage the pest-infesting pummelo. The experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five treatments replicated three times. The treatments were: curry tree leaf leachate, neem tree leaf leachate, bagging with an ordinary net, treated check (Chlorpyrifos + Beta-cyfluthrin), and untreated check. Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance while the differences among treatment means were computed using the Tukey's Honest Significant Difference. Results revealed that the cost-effective treatment against the destructive citrus rind borer is the bagging treatment. Bagging of fruits is more economical and environmentally sound over the use of chemical pesticides (Chlorpyrifos + Beta-cyfluthrin).

Abstract:
Plant extracts have the potential to serve as natural therapeutic agents that can counteract the negative effects of various toxins, including those found in cigarette smoke. One such plant with this potential is the red pomegranate (Punica granatum). This study aims to determine the effect of administering Red Pomegranate (Punica ganatum) peel extract on the number of erythrocytes and hemoglobin levels in white mice exposed to cigarette smoke. This type of research is experimental laboratory post test only group design. Mice were divided into 4 treatment groups, namely: P0, control group, test animals treated with distilled water; treatment groups P1, P2 and P3, which were treated with neem leaf ethanol extract at a dose of 10 each; 20; 40 mg/head/day and mice were exposed to cigarette smoke. The research results showed that the higher the extract given, the higher the HB and erythrocyte levels. From this research it can be concluded that administration of Red Pomegranate rind extract can increase the number of erythrocytes and hemoglobin levels but it is not significant (p>0.05). The contribution of this research provides important data on the interaction between toxins (in this case, cigarette smoke) and protective agents (red pomegranate peel ethanol extract). This information is valuable in the fields of toxicology and pharmacology for understanding cellular protection mechanisms and potential new treatments.

Tarhule, Andover, and Malcolm K. Hughes. "Tree-Ring Research in Semi-Arid West Africa: Need and Potential." Tree-Ring Society, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/262542.

Full text
Abstract:
High-resolution paleoclimatic data for West Africa are needed to provide context for contemporary climatic and ecological dynamics. Six hundred trees (22 botanical families, 43 genera and over 70 species) from semi-arid West Africa were evaluated for their suitability for dendrochronological research; specifically ring development. The samples were classified as 'potentially useful', 'problematic', or 'poor' based on the presence and distinctiveness of annual rings, ability to achieve crossdating between radii using skeleton plots on at least some samples, circuit uniformity, ring wedging, and variability of ring widths. Samples were classified as potentially useful if (a) they exhibited distinctive annual rings that could be identified and counted with little uncertainty and be independently verified by a second person with little or no error, (b) crossdating between radii could be successfully achieved, at least on some samples, (c) the rings were generally consistent throughout the stem cross section, (d) ring wedging was minimal (in the relative sense) or absent, and (e) the ring widths were variable, indicating the possibility of climatic sensitivity. Seven species, including five from the Caesalpiniaceae family (Cassia sieberiana, Cordyla pinnata, Daniella oliveri, Isoberlinia doka, Tamarindus indica), and one each from Mimosaceae (Acacia seyal) and Verbenaceae (Gmelina arborea) families, that most closely satisfied these criteria were classified as 'potentially useful'. The 'problematic' category includes those samples that satisfied some of the criteria but for which greater diligence is required to detect rings. Eight species from three families were classified in this category. Finally those samples on which ring detection appears futile given current methods and techniques were classified as 'poor'. Most of the samples classified as 'potentially useful' belong to three botanical families, Caesalpiniaceae, Mimosacae, and Verbenaceae. These results are consistent with the findings of other studies, and therefore support further investigation of the potential of West African trees for tree-ring analysis focusing on these families. Furthermore, inability to crossdate between trees and to explain several ring anatomical features underscores the pressing need for comprehensive field studies of cambial activity during the growing season, and for the identification of dormant seasons. This requirement, and other difficulties discussed suggest a need for increasing the local dendrochronological expertise in West Africa.

Full text
Abstract:
AbstractAfter dedicated efforts devoted to the longitudinal dynamics to realize an ultrasmall longitudinal emittance and ultrashort bunch length for coherent radiation generation, we need to make sure that the coupling arising from transverse dynamics does not degrade or even destroy the longitudinal fine structures. Such an argument is based on the observation that the transverse beam size in an SSMB ring can be orders of magnitude larger than the desired microbunch length. This is the basic motivation for us to investigate the transverse-longitudinal coupling (TLC) dynamics. In this chapter, we start from the linear TLC and then investigate the nonlinear TLC dynamics. For the linear dynamics, first we analyze the passive bunch lengthening induced by bending magnets. We then emphasize the fact that TLC can actually be actively applied for efficient bunch compression and high harmonic generation when the transverse emittance is small. We present three theorems on the application of such TLC schemes, with their implications discussed. Further, we have analyzed the contribution of modulators to the vertical emittance from quantum excitation, to obtain a self-consistent evaluation of the required modulation laser power when applying these coupling schemes in a storage ring. The theorems and related analysis provide the theoretical basis for the application of TLC in SSMB to lower the requirement on the modulation laser power, by taking advantage of the fact that the vertical emittance in a planar ring is rather small. Based on the investigations, we have presented example parameters sets for the envisioned SSMB storage ring to generate high-power EUV and soft X-ray radiation at the end of this dissertation.

AbstractThe chapter details how Reinholdtsen’s own fanatical pursuit of ultimate artistic autonomy and control of the means of production have led him to founding his own artist institution, The Norwegian Opra. Weaving together Broodthaers’ affirmative critique of the museum with the aspirations of Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen, he makes the case for the musical pursuit of a freely interdisciplinary compositional engagement with musical ‘material’, casting off historical cruft where it does not suit. Reinholdtsen points to our global institutional instability to underscore the need for musical artists to reaffirm their importance in society in a positive light, while never compromising their artistic expression.

Abstract:
Abstract The angular distance of the solar flares to the projective point of the center of the solar disk on the solar spherical surface has been studied by the heliographical or helioprojective coordinates, during the periods 1975–2021 for GOES events and 2002–2021 for RHESSI events, hereafter “distance.” It gives a specific distribution curvature. It has also been noted that when using the number of solar flare events in each satellite, GOES or RHESSI, or even using the sum of the flux (class) or importance parameter, it obtains the same result, which is that the shape of the distribution curve remains in its shape without any significant change. In addition, it has been shown that the distribution curve contains a specific number of peaks. These peaks have a specific distance from the center of the solar disk that is very similar to the projection of the solar interior layers on the solar disk. For this reason, the names of these four main peaks have been given as follows: (1) the core circle (0–15°): it is a projection of the solar core onto the solar disk, (2) radiative ring (15–45°), and (3) the convection ring (45–55°). The limb ring is 80–90°. This result makes us wonder why the number of events in the middle of the solar disk is few, and also small at the solar limb, while many in the other parts in the solar disk. This suggests that we need to understand the sun better than before, and it also suggests that solar flares are connected to each other through the solar interior layers, the extent of which may reach the convection zone or perhaps beyond that, or the opacity of the convection zone may be less than the currently estimated value.

Abstract:
AbstractParticle accelerators as photon sources are advanced tools in investigating the structure and dynamical properties of matter, and have enabled advances in science and technology for more than half a century. The present workhorses of these sources are storage ring-based synchrotron radiation facilities [1–3] and linear accelerator-based free-electron lasers (FELs) [4–7]. These two kinds of sources deliver light with high repetition rate and high peak brilliance and power, respectively. Some applications, however, do need high average power and high photon flux. Kilowatt extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light sources, for example, are urgently needed by the semiconductor industry for EUV lithography [8]. Another example is that to realize high energy resolution in synchrotron-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), which is highly desired by fundamental condensed matter physics research, we need the initial radiation photon flux before monochromator is high enough. To obtain high average power and high photon flux, a high peak power or a high repetition rate alone is not sufficient. We need both of them simultaneously.

Abstract:
Nowadays, yachts can reach very high performances and the discovery of new technologies will allow to achieve even better ones. Therefore, building quiet yachts with the lowest possible vibration levels has become the new challenge. To propose the most cost-effective solutions to its clients, RINA predicts noise and vibration levels onboard. Using simulation software allows to detect in advance the most critical areas of the ships, thus reducing the need of costly countermeasures late in the design phase. Finally, RINA evaluates the noise and vibration levels onboard to certify that the yacht is compliant with the specified limits. The work presents a test case in which RINA performed a full study on a yacht.

This chapter is aimed at highlighting why ring fencing not only presents a more feasible and cost effective option to other models, but also why its degree of flexibility provides the more appropriate balance in a financial environment whose trend is increasingly inclined towards conglomeration. Whilst the Liikanen Report highlights why there is need for re-structuring of banks into separate legal entities – as a means of achieving ring fencing activities, the mandatory separation of banks' proprietary trading and other risky activities, such as that opted for under the Liikanen Report could be distinguished from the position under Volcker's Rule in the sense that it does not impose such stringent requirements as those applicable under Volcker's Rule – whilst not being as flexible as ring fencing recommendations proposed in the Vickers Report.

Abstract Cast nickel base alloys (CRA’s) have been viewed by some as not suitable for service in sour environments. Two cast precipitation hardenable nickel base alloys, 718 and 925, were compared with their wrought counterparts. Room temperature SSC tests per method A of NACE TM0177 as well as elevated temperature C Ring tests were conducted. The relative pitting corrosion resistance in chloride environments was examined using accelerated immersion tests. The SSC resistance of the cast alloys was identical with the wrought counterparts and no SCC was detected in C Ring tests. There was a slight difference in the initiation of pitting. The microstructure and microporosity were found to have an effect upon elevated temperature slow strain rate tests (SSRTs). For the more severe applications, good microstructural and porosity control need to be exercised.

Abstract:
This paper addresses the urgent need to enhance rotorcraft safety and performance by developing a prediction methodology for the onset of the Vortex Ring State (VRS), and therefore verifying the VRS avoidance diagram. The objectives of this research are to assess the correlation between predictions generated by a comprehensive flight dynamics code and the latest and most accurate VRS boundary models, validate the VRS avoidance diagram across diverse descending flight conditions, and identify specific parameters indicating the rotor's entry into the VRS. The methodology involves a detailed investigation of 8 descent manoeuvres using a comprehensive flight dynamics code coupled with an advanced free vortex wake model. Results show that the pitch and roll oscillations and thrust fluctuations experienced by helicopters during the VRS are also observed in the model response to steep descent maneuvers. The findings confirm the reliability and applicability of the VRS avoidance diagram, providing valuable insights for improving rotorcraft design and flight control systems. Furthermore, this study presents novel findings regarding the identification of the VRS onset boundary through the observation of pitch and roll rate fluctuations, which contribute to the systematic detection and prevention of the VRS.

Abstract:
Hydraulic conductivity (KS) is a critical parameter used in soil and land research, essential for accurate hydrological modelling. This study endeavours to compare assessments of KS across designated sites near the Czech Republic - Poland border using a range of measurement techniques, with the aim of establishing their reliability and variability for modelling applications. The investigation spans the determination of permeability from grain size curves, KS estimation via field infiltration tests employing the double-ring method, and laboratory KS determination using a constant head permeameter. The findings reveal that the double-ring method for the determination of KS produces results akin to laboratory measurements conducted with the permeameter, showing consistency between the field and laboratory approaches. However, it is notable that the permeameter exhibits significant variability, particularly as the depth varies. Moreover, noteworthy disparities emerge between KS and permeability estimates, underscoring the need for careful consideration in the interpretation of these parameters. Considering these results, it seems advisable to give precedence to field-based evaluations of KS for immediate assessments, as they provide valuable insights into real conditions. Conversely, for long-term assessments, the utilization of laboratory derived KS values may be more suitable, given their potential for stability over time. Nonetheless, the study emphasizes the necessity for further research to minimize the uncertainties and refine model inputs. Ultimately, this study underscores the intricate nature of hydraulic conductivity in soils and the imperative for comprehensive research to further develop water management models.

Goodwin, Fred. "Next Generation Galvanic Anodes." In CORROSION 2016. NACE International, 2016. https://doi.org/10.5006/c2016-07868.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Discrete galvanic anodes are used to minimize the ring/incipient/halo anode effect in concrete repairs relying on sacrificial corrosion of a more active metal than conventional reinforcing steel to provide continued protection. The demand for this protection changes with time based on the corrosion activity of the steel requiring protection. When the concrete is repaired, the repair material creates a strongly cathodic area within the repair that accelerates corrosion in the reinforcing steel immediately adjacent to the repair area known as the ring or incipient anode or halo effect. This requires an initially high current flow from the discrete galvanic anode that decreases with time. New “hybrid technology” anodes uses a short interval of impressed current cathodic protection to create a passive condition in the halo area to move halides away from the reinforcing steel and restore alkalinity to the concrete in contact with the reinforcing steel. Following this impressed current treatment, protection is maintained through galvanic activity of zinc after the impressed current is removed. A novel “bimetallic” technology has been developed using two active galvanic metals, magnesium and zinc. A small amount of magnesium can provide the "jump start" to create an initial high polarization similar to these other hybrid anodes without the need of external power, rewiring of the cathodic protection system or reliance on complex electrical circuitry to control the impressed current phase of treatment. The new bi-metallic anode is simply installed exactly like conventional single stage anodes. Following consumption of the magnesium, maintenance current is provided by conventional zinc galvanic protection. Furthermore, because the galvanic reaction is controlled by the environmental conditions of the installation and corrosion activity of the reinforcing steel, there is no potential for overvoltage, complex wiring, or any additional activity required after the hybrid anode is installed.

Abstract:
Abstract A fitness for purpose stress corrosion cracking (SCC) assessment was performed to evaluate the suitability of a 13Cr-5Ni-2Mo 110 ksi (758 MPa) grade martensitic stainless steel as a potential well tubing material for oil and gas production from deep water reservoirs. Conditions were chosen to reflect those expected in producer wells, including the possible presence of H2S as a result of reservoir souring due to seawater flooding. A detailed analysis of existing martensitic stainless steel test data for sulphide stress corrosion (SSC) and SCC revealed the need for a qualification test program to fully cover the conditions identified. Both static Creviced C-ring and dynamic Cyclic Slow Strain Rate (CSSR) tests for assessing SCC resistance were undertaken in concentrated brine at 200°F (93°C). The test program and the results obtained are detailed and compared against existing data, thereby further defining the safe operating envelop for SCC and SSC of 13Cr-5Ni-2Mo 110 ksi grade martensitic stainless steels in environments that are outside of current experience.

Abstract:
Abstract How effectively drilling mud's qualities, such as pH, mud weight, viscosity, etc. are maintained determines how successful it is. Therefore, it is essential to choose drilling fluids, additives, and its composition carefully. The urgent need for product substitution, cost cutting, waste management, and environmental protection was connected with this study project. This research attempted to determine whether potassium hydroxide might be replaced by watermelon rinds (KOH). Watermelon rinds are a common household waste that is commonly available, easily accessible, and biodegradable. They also contain a high amount of potassium. The method used to synthesize KOH from the watermelon rind is caustification of potassium carbonate (K2CO3) from calcining of processed watermelon rind (dried and pulverized). A laboratory barrel of water-based mud was prepared using Wyoming bentonite clay. The produced additives from the watermelon rinds were added to the mud at different concentrations. The results obtained from the experiments conducted showed that the values pH values for synthesized KOH gave comparable results to the commercial KOH. The pH increase was 8.62%, 12.06%, 24.25% and 39.31% for watermelon rind (processed rind), ash, synthesized potassium carbonate and synthesized KOH respectively at maximum concentration. The four additives used increased filtrate loss and mud cake thickness, the rheological properties and mud weight of the mud. In conclusion as a pH enhancer, the synthesized KOH from watermelon rind is suitable and also has secondary effects on mud weight, filtration properties and rheological properties.

Abstract:
M. Sergeyev’s article “Ukrainian National Idea in the Modern Ukrainian Media Space” states that modern Ukrainian philosophical thought tries to get rid of the flaws and stereotypes of its one-sided orientation “to the East” and tries to establish a European orientation in the minds of Ukrainian citizens. The theoretical proof of the new worldview took place throughout the formation of the Ukrainian state from Little Russia to Ukraine and presents its actual struggle for independence. It is an integral concept that reflects the process of forming theories and views of prominent Ukrainian thinkers on the place and role of Ukrainians in the becoming and development of an independent Ukrainian state. As O. Zabuzhko emphasizes, “all Ukrainian philosophical, historical, sociological thought of the past and our centuries (including the diaspora) is permeated with the sacred idea of nationalism”. The author concludes that the logic of the historical development of the Ukrainian national idea reveals only one model of its socio-political future, which implies the need for Ukraine’s integration into the European and world community. This path requires the moral and political readiness of the entire Ukrainian society for its implementation and prevents the emergence of any other - alternative ideas. Solving this problem is complicated by the need to return to Ukraine the temporarily occupied territories of Crimea, Luhansk and Donetsk regions. Of course, this model will lead to significant political and economic tensions in society (the final severance of economic relations with Russia, the closure of non-competitive industries, the outflow of labor to the west). At the same time, the orientation of the Ukrainian national idea to the west will increase competition in all branches of production and will be a condition for further self-improvement of Ukrainian society.

Brophy, Kenny, and Alison Sheridan, eds. Neolithic Scotland: ScARF Panel Report. Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.9750/scarf.06.2012.196.

Full text
Abstract:
The main recommendations of the Panel report can be summarised as follows: The Overall Picture: more needs to be understood about the process of acculturation of indigenous communities; about the Atlantic, Breton strand of Neolithisation; about the ‘how and why’ of the spread of Grooved Ware use and its associated practices and traditions; and about reactions to Continental Beaker novelties which appeared from the 25th century. The Detailed Picture: Our understanding of developments in different parts of Scotland is very uneven, with Shetland and the north-west mainland being in particular need of targeted research. Also, here and elsewhere in Scotland, the chronology of developments needs to be clarified, especially as regards developments in the Hebrides. Lifeways and Lifestyles: Research needs to be directed towards filling the substantial gaps in our understanding of: i) subsistence strategies; ii) landscape use (including issues of population size and distribution); iii) environmental change and its consequences – and in particular issues of sea level rise, peat formation and woodland regeneration; and iv) the nature and organisation of the places where people lived; and to track changes over time in all of these. Material Culture and Use of Resources: In addition to fine-tuning our characterisation of material culture and resource use (and its changes over the course of the Neolithic), we need to apply a wider range of analytical approaches in order to discover more about manufacture and use. Some basic questions still need to be addressed (e.g. the chronology of felsite use in Shetland; what kind of pottery was in use, c 3000–2500, in areas where Grooved Ware was not used, etc.) and are outlined in the relevant section of the document. Our knowledge of organic artefacts is very limited, so research in waterlogged contexts is desirable. Identity, Society, Belief Systems: Basic questions about the organisation of society need to be addressed: are we dealing with communities that started out as egalitarian, but (in some regions) became socially differentiated? Can we identify acculturated indigenous people? How much mobility, and what kind of mobility, was there at different times during the Neolithic? And our chronology of certain monument types and key sites (including the Ring of Brodgar, despite its recent excavation) requires to be clarified, especially since we now know that certain types of monument (including Clava cairns) were not built during the Neolithic. The way in which certain types of site (e.g. large palisaded enclosures) were used remains to be clarified. Research and methodological issues: There is still much ignorance of the results of past and current research, so more effective means of dissemination are required. Basic inventory information (e.g. the Scottish Human Remains Database) needs to be compiled, and Canmore and museum database information needs to be updated and expanded – and, where not already available online, placed online, preferably with a Scottish Neolithic e-hub that directs the enquirer to all the available sources of information. The Historic Scotland on-line radiocarbon date inventory needs to be resurrected and kept up to date. Under-used resources, including the rich aerial photography archive in the NMRS, need to have their potential fully exploited. Multi-disciplinary, collaborative research (and the application of GIS modelling to spatial data in order to process the results) is vital if we are to escape from the current ‘silo’ approach and address key research questions from a range of perspectives; and awareness of relevant research outside Scotland is essential if we are to avoid reinventing the wheel. Our perspective needs to encompass multi-scale approaches, so that ScARF Neolithic Panel Report iv developments within Scotland can be understood at a local, regional and wider level. Most importantly, the right questions need to be framed, and the right research strategies need to be developed, in order to extract the maximum amount of information about the Scottish Neolithic.

Abstract:
Under rapid urbanization that took place from around 1960 to 1990, the Republic of Korea has been facing various urban problems such as the expansion of urban slum, traffic congestion and environmental pollution. Among the various responses to these challenges, New Town development can be regarded as one of the most successful and effective strategies, which hasover 50 years of development history in five phases. Korea's New Towns were developed with three main purposes according to the periodic needs: industry support, housing supply, and nationwide balanced development. Phase I New Towns (1962-81) responded to the country's need for industry promotion. Phase II (1967-86), Phase III (1989-95) and Phase IV (2001-present) New Towns were built in response to the severe lack of housing emerged due to over-concentration in the capital and later its metropolitan area, by providing large-scale housing inside Seoul, in the outer ring of Seoul, and in the Capital Area respectively over time. Finally, the most recent Phase V New Towns (2005-present) provided response to the issue of equitable and balanced development across the country. These development yielded outcomes such as housing market stabilization, improvement of housing condition, securement of public and green spaces, economic effect on related industries, and expansion of urban infrastructure. The paper suggests three success factors of Korea's New Town development. First is feasible planning and concrete implementation strategies that enabled the implementing organizations to overcome conflicts and carry on with the project until completion. The second factor is institutional driving force and legal support which involved establishing a dedicated bureau, defining clear organizational structure and stakeholder roles, and providing timely Acts to support the land acquisition and construction. The third success factor is reasonable land acquisition methodologies which evolved over time from Land Readjustment to Publically Management Development. This paper also presents Sustainable New own Design Criteria as an important implication for the LAC to consider, which includes social, economic and environmental sustainability that pursue outcomes such as social inclusion, self-sufficiency, connectivity, green space and smart resource management. Exchanging these experience of Korea and promoting mutual cooperation would be highly valuable for the cities in LAC to minimize the trial and error and maximize the success factors experienced by Korea as an attempt to relieve the challenges of rapid urbanization they are faced with at present. In this regard, it is anticipated that Korea can actively share its accumulated New Town experience and knowledge and act as one of the promising development partners of the countries in LAC.

Abstract:
Several grape varieties and red wines were found to contain large concentration of phenolic compounds which work as antioxidant in-vitro and in-vivo. Wastes from wine production contain antioxidants in large amounts, between 2-6% on dry material basis. Red wines but also white wines were found to prevent lipid peroxidation of turkey muscle tissues stored at 5oC. The antioxidant reaction of flavonoids found in red wines against lipid peroxidation were found to depend on the structure of the molecule. Red wine flavonoids containing an orthodihydroxy structure around the B ring were found highly active against LDL and membrane lipid peroxidation. The antioxidant activity of red wine polyphenols were also found to be dependent on the catalyzer used. In the presence of H2O2-activated myoglobin, the inhibition efficiency was malvidin 3-glucoside>catechin>malvidin>resveratol. However, in the presence of an iron redox cycle catalyzer, the order of effectiveness was resveratol>malvidin 3-glucoside = malvidin>catechin. Differences in protein binding were found to affect antioxidant activity in inhibiting LDL oxidation. A model protein such as BSA, was investigated on the antioxidant activity of phenolic compounds, grape extracts, and red wines in a lecithin-liposome model system. Ferulic acid followed by malvidin and rutin were the most efficient in inhibiting both lipid and protein oxidation. Catechin, a flavonal found in red-wines in relatively high concentration was found to inhibit myoglobin catalyzed linoleate membrane lipid peroxidation at a relatively very low concentration. This effect was studied by the determination of the by-products generated from linoleate during oxidation. The study showed that hydroperoxides are catalytically broken down, not to an alcohol but most probably to a non-radical adduct. The ability of wine-phenolics to reduce iron and from complexes with metals were also demonstrated. Low concentration of wine phenolics were found to inhibit lipoxygenase type II activity. An attempt to understand the bioavailability in humans of antocyanins from red wine showed that two antocyanins from red wine were found unchanged in human urine. Other antocyanins seems to undergo molecular modification. In hypercholesterolemic hamsters, aortic lipid deposition was significantly less in animals fed diets supplemented with either catechin or vitamin E. The rate of LDL accumulation in the carotid arteries was also significantly lower in the catechin and vitamin E animal groups. These results suggested a novel mechanism by which wine phenolics are associated with decreased risk of coronary heart diseases. This study proves in part our hypothesis that the "French Paradox" could be explained by the action of the antioxidant effects of phenolic compounds found at high concentration in red wines. The results of this study argue that it is in the interest of public health to increase the consumption of dietary plant falvonoids. Our results and these from others, show that the consumption of red wine or plant derived polyphenolics can change the antioxidant tone of animal and human plasma and its isolated components towards oxidative reactions. However, we need more research to better understand bioavailability and the mechanism of how polyphenolics affect health and disease.
