Abstract:
Previous studies suggest that there is an association between positive numbers and space; however, there is less agreement for negative numbers. The main purpose of the present study was to investigate the nature of the processing and representation of negative numbers, and the association between negative numbers and space. Results of the two experiments show that low-level processing (perception) of negative numbers can induce spatial shifts of attention. Whether this is caused by their numerical value or absolute value depends on the numerical context and task requirements, indicating that

In this thesis we study abelian number fields and in particular their zeta functions at the negative integers. The prototypical examples of abelian number fields are the oft-studied cyclotomic fields, a topic upon which many texts have been almost exclusively dedicated to (see for example \cite{washington1997introduction} or nearly any text on global class field theory). \\ We begin by building up our understanding of the characters of finite abelian groups and how they are related to Dedekind zeta functions. We then use tools from number theory such as the Kronecker-Weber theorem and Bernoull

Children’s failure to re-use knowledge will continue to be problematic until processes that contribute to conceptual growth are better understood. The notion that conceptual knowledge, soundly constructed and reinforced, forms the basis of future learning, as the learner uses it unproblematically to make sense of new situations in related areas, is appealing. This thesis will show this to be an overly simplistic view of learning, failing to take sufficient account of fine-grained processes that contribute to the micro-evolution of knowledge and of connections between cognition and other factor

Four main syntactic ways of expressing negative indefinites, or the direct-negation function of indefinite pronouns, are described: verbal negation plus (ordinary) indefinite, verbal negation plus ‘special indefinite’, verbal negation plus ‘negative ind
