Abstract:

In this century there has been a deep concern about the dangers of nationalism. Many of those who have expressed such concerns have been liberals. Yet, ironically, in the last decade, there has been a resurgence of interest in the idea of nationalism from within liberal thought – thus giving rise to the compound term ‘liberal nationalism’. Having situated liberal nationalism in a broader historical context, this paper critically reviews the arguments of liberal nationalism in the work of Neil MacCormick, David Miller and Yael Tamir. It concludes by drawing a distinction between the pragmatic and ethical significance of nationalism. This distinction neither entails a denial of the role of nationalism nor a defence of liberalism. It attempts to sever the connection between nationalism and ethics. Nationalism may be inevitable for the present, but it is not a virtue to be promoted.

В статье рассматривается проблема периодизации сцен безумия в европейском музыкальном театре. Автор анализирует три взгляда на историческую эволюцию оперного сумасшествия: психиатра Нила Бренера, культуролога Кортни Миллер и литературоведа Эстер Хузер. Все названные ученые обсуждают исключительно тексты либретто, не касаясь их музыкального воплощения. Изложены основные критерии и принципы данных периодизаций, обозначены хронологические рамки периодов, описаны их характерные особенности. Отмечены как методологически перспективные, так и весьма спорные стороны рассматриваемых работ. Цитаты из исследований представлены в авторском переводе. The article deals with the problem of the periodization of madness scenes in European musical theater. The author analyzes three views on the historical evolution of opera madness: by psychiatrist Neil Brener, by cultural critic Courtney Miller and by literary scholar Esther Huzer. All these scholars discuss only the texts of the librettos without touching on their musical embodiment. The main criteria and principles of each periodization are exposed, the chronological framework of the periods is outlined, and their characteristic features are described. Both methodologically promising and highly controversial aspects of the works under consideration are emphasized. Quotations from the research are presented in the author's translation.

Abstract:

The paper discusses the ways of domesticating the feeling of sublime homelessness when contemplating the realm of outer space in Carl Sagan’s revolutionary television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage (1980) and its present-day sequel Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey (2014) hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson. Following World War II, a novel trend emerged in the science documentary film fueled by “popular science boom” or the “post-war bonanza” (Gregory and Miller, 37) and characterized by a gradual tendency to move toward more complicated representational extremes. Its form, best exemplified by the late 1970s and 1980s space science documentaries, relied on the scientist-hosted and stunningly realist format as well as a mediated experience of the astronomical and dynamic sublime. Partly contrary to this conception, the new ways of deriving spectator’s pleasure also involved both domesticating and trivializing the productions’ content, observable in references to domestic surroundings as well as familiar cultural and historical conventions, such as the frontier myth or urban sublime of New York City. The paper argues that examined documentaries, seen as multimedia spectacles, tend to domesticate outer space through reconciling the cosmic sublime with the notion of a homely, lived-in place.

Abstract:

Soolise võrdõiguslikkuse taotlemisel lähtutakse põhimõttest, et naistel ja meestel on võrdsed õigused, kohustused, võimalused ja vastutus nii hariduse omandamisel kui ka tööelus. Kuna haridusel, sh õpetajakoolitusel, on väärtuste ja hoiakute kujundamisel oluline roll, käsitletakse seda sageli soolise võrdõiguslikkuse edendamise ühe võtmevaldkonnana. Uurimuse eesmärk on kirjeldada Eesti õpetajakoolituse ja kasvatusteaduste valdkonna üliõpilaste hoiakuid ja teadlikkust soolise võrdõiguslikkuse küsimuses, sh osutada nende erinevustele üliõpilaste üldkogumist. Selleks kombineeriti kvantitatiivset ja kvalitatiivset uurimisviisi. Uuringus küsitleti üliõpilasi (N = 2748) soolise võrdõiguslikkusega seotud hoiakute ja kogemuste teemal ning intervjueeriti õpetajakoolituse üliõpilasi (N = 20) fookusrühmades, et mõtestada kõrgkoolide õpetamispraktikat ning seda mõjutavaid väärtusi ja norme soolise võrdõiguslikkuse vaatenurgast. Ilmnes, et üliõpilased suhtuvad soolisesse võrdõiguslikkusse soosivalt ja tajuvad ebavõrdset kohtlemist soo alusel probleemina. See on hea potentsiaal, mille varal arendada tulevaste õpetajate valmisolekut sootundlikuks pedagoogikaks. Selgelt eristusid ka nende üliõpilaste rühmad, kelle hoiakutes väljenduvad teiste rühmadega võrreldes enam soolised stereotüübid (algajad üliõpilased ja mehed). Uurimuse tulemused täiendavad varasemate uurimuste omi, milles käsitletakse sugupoolte aspekti arvestamist hariduses, ning neil on praktiline väärtus õpetajakoolituse õppekavade kujundamisel. Abstract Neal Miller's research contributions mainly concerned reward and learning mechanisms: (a) underlying thought processes and behaviors relevant to problem solving in psychotherapy and everyday life, (b) as mediated by the nervous system, and (c) involved in learning control over voluntary (conscious) skeletal muscle and autonomic (normally unconscious) internal-organ response systems for minimizing stress, treating disease, and promoting health. His career shows psychology's evolution from a theory-driven but data-impoverished discipline in the 1930s to one integrating vast bodies of clinical, social, and physiological knowledge.

Eesti kirjakeele morfosüntaksi kujunemisel mängisid olulist osa 16.–18. sajandi vaimulikud tõlked, mille loomise käigus kohandati seni suulisena funktsioneerinud rahvakeel kirjalike kristlike tekstide nõuetele. Artiklis vaadeldakse ühe väikese morfosüntaktilise rühma arenguid sel perioodil. Ana-lüüsitakse konstruktsioone, milles ütlemist, tajumist ja teadmist väljendavaid verbe laiendab infiniitne vorm. Kirjeldatakse niisuguseid konstruktsioone rahvalaulukeeles, eeskujukeeltes ja varases kirjakeeles ning jõutakse järeldusele, et vastavad rahvakeelsed mallid võeti kirjakeeles suhteliselt vara kasutusele tänu sellele, et eeskujukeeled pakkusid nende rakendamiseks soodsaid võimalusi. 17. sajandi alguse põhjaeesti kirjakeeles tarvitati neis konstruktsioonides läbisegi partitsiipi ja infinitiivi, sest eri murded pakkusidki eri võimalusi (tüdruk kuulis poissi laulVAT/ laulMA). Partitsiipsete konstruktsioonide kirjakeelne kasutus põhjaeesti tekstides erines alguses rahvakeelsest ning selles võib oletada klassikaliste keelte eeskuju. 17. sajandi lõpus loobuti põhjaeesti kirjakeeles infinitiivsetest konstruktsioonidest partitsiipsete kasuks. Niisuguses valikus võib näha lõunaeesti mõju, aga ka soovi vältida võimalikke germanisme, millega infinitiivseid konstruktsioone võidi siduda.

Koostöine õpikultuur võimestab õpetajaid, suurendab eneseusaldust, annab julgust situatsioone juhtida ja suurendab agentsust. Uurimuse eesmärk on välja selgitada õpetajate koostöökultuuri kogemused. Kriitilist diskursuseanalüüsi kasutades kirjeldame, kuidas 15 üldhariduskooli 45 õpetajat konstrueerivad koostöise õpikultuuri kogemust individuaalsel, suhtlus- ja sotsiaalsel tasandil ning väljendavad enda agentsust. Uuringus eendus agentsete õpetajate koostöise õpikultuuri diskursus, mille aluseks on üksteiselt õppimine, mittevõistlev keskkond, usalduslikud suhted ja tunnustamine. Konkurentsidiskursusele on omane piiratud koostöö, kuna kolleegides või juhtides nähakse takistusi. Võimestamata õpetaja diskursust iseloomustavad ei-sõnumid ja agentsuse puudumine: sellised õpetajad ei usu koostöösse, neil puuduvad head koostöökogemused, nad ei koge kolleegide ega juhtkonna toetust-tunnustust. Abstract Neal Miller did more to make psychology a science than any other investigator. His importance does not lie with any specific discoveries that he made, but rather with his way of doing scientific research, which involved pursuing a line of logic systematically through sequences of experiments, and paying attention to several alternate hypotheses that could answer each of the experimental questions addressed. His approach was a model of what has been called “Strong Inference” and that is characteristically used in the hard sciences. His biofeedback research is used as a case history of his method of approach.

This article presents a brief overview and comparison of the imperfective and perfective aspect in Estonian and Latvian. The main means of expressing the perfective and imperfective aspect in Estonian are the case opposition of the direct object (the nominative/genitive or the partitive), the use of verb particles, and the general context. In Latvian, the opposition of the perfective and imperfective aspect is mainly expressed by existence or absence of verb prefixes, adverbs, and also the context. In Latvian, verb prefixes, besides perfectivity, may also add or modify the lexical meaning of the verb. We compare how the perfective and imperfective aspect are expressed in both languages in the case of transitive verbs, based on the correspondences found in a text corpus of literary works and their translations.Kokkuvõte. Ilze Tālberga, Aive Mandel: Imperfektiivsest ja perfektiivsest aspektist eesti ja läti keeles. Artiklis uuritakse imperfektiivse ja perfektiivse aspekti vastandust võrdlevalt eesti ja läti keeles. Selleks kasutatavad näited pärinevad eesti ja läti ilukirjandusteostest ning nende vastastikustest tõlgetest. Käesolevas analüüsis on keskendutud transitiivsetele verbidele, mis nõuavad objekti. Edaspidises uurimistöös loodetakse võtta vaatluse alla ka intransitiivsed verbid. Eesti keeles on keskseks perfektiivsuse markeerimise vahendiks objektikääne. Perfektiivsust väljendab totaalobjekt (ainsuse või mitmuse nominatiiv, ainsuse genitiiv). Läti keeles väljendatakse perfektiivsust esmajoones verbiprefiksite abil, mida on kokku 11 ning mis kõik võivad (aga ei pruugi) lisaks perfektiivsusele anda verbile ka mõne muu (ruumilise, kvantitatiivse või kvalitatiivse) lisatähenduse. Kõrvutasime näitematerjali abil esmalt neid olukordi, kus eesti täisobjekti vasteks on läti keelde tõlkimisel prefiksverb, ning vaatlesime sama olukorda ka vastupidisel tõlkesuunal. Ilukirjandusnäidete põhjal tuleb neist näidetest lisaks perfektiivsuse vastavusele hästi välja ka läti prefiksi lisatähendus. Teiseks toimivad eesti keeles perfektiivsuse väljendamise vahendina ka verbipartiklid (nt ära), mis võivad kas aidata totaalobjektis juba kajastuvat perfektiivsust kinnitada või on teatud juhtudel ka obligatoorsed. See mehhanism aitab kompenseerida eesti keeles ajalooliste muutuste tõttu vähem eristuvaks muutunud objektikäänete ebaselgust võrreldes nt soome keelega, kus eesti keelest sagedamini piisab perfektiivsuse väljendamiseks pelgalt objektikäändest. Tõlkekõrvutuste põhjal järeldub, et eesti verbipartiklit saab läti keeles väljendada verbiprefiksiga, milles võib avalduda lisaks perfektiivsusele ka lisatähendus (aiz- – ‘kinni’). Lisatähendus võib ka puududa (iz-mazgāt – ‘ära pesema’), viimasel juhul väljendatakse nii partikli kui ka prefiksiga vaid perfektiivsust. Eesti verbipartiklit võidakse aga läti keeles väljendada ka prefiksverbiga, millele lisandub samatähenduslik adverb. Kuna sellist adverbikasutust ei peeta läti keeles aspekti osaks, sest perfektiivsus väljendub juba prefiksis, siis võib neid tõlgendada ruumilist suunda rõhutavatena. Mõlemal tõlkesuunal on näha, et kui prefiksverb on juba olemas, siis sellele läti keeles lisatud adverb eestikeelset vastet ei mõjuta – eesti keeles esineb siis samasugune vaste, nagu oleks adverbita prefiksverbi puhul, kuna ka prefiksverbis on sama ruumilisus juba esindatud. Mõlemad keeled kasutavad siis sel juhul paralleelselt adverbe.Imperfektiivsust saab eesti keeles väljendada osaobjektiga (partitiiv), mis aga võib sõltuvalt kontekstist kanda ka perfektiivset tähendust. Läti keeles on imperfektiivse tõlgendusega osaobjekti vasteks prefiksita verb, mis ilmneb mõlemal keelesuunal ka tõlkematerjalis. Lisaks on läti keeles võimalik imperfektiivsust väljendada konstruktsiooniga prefiksita verb + adverb, milles esinev adverb on prefiksiga samatähenduslik. Nii on konstruktsioonis perfektiivsust väljendav prefiks asendatud samasisulise adverbiga, saavutades imperfektiivse tähenduse. Ka selle konstruktsiooni puhul võib näha tõlkenäidetes eesti vastena osaobjekti partitiivis, mille tõlkevastena võib omakorda eesti-läti tõlkesuunal leida osaobjekti. Läti keele imperfektiivsete (prefiksita verb) lausenäidete vastena võib mõnel harval juhul leida eesti keeles ka progressiivtarindi.Käesolev uurimus tõi perfektiivsuse ja imperfektiivsuse väljendamisel eesti ja läti keeles välja rea omavahelisi paralleele, erinevusi ja ka sarnasusi. Abstract Neal Miller's research on animals and humans launched the field of self-regulation, enabling individuals to take a more active role in their health and well-being. However, his inquiry into whether autonomic operant conditioning occurs remains open to debate. This article contends that present-day biofeedback therapists continue to be confronted by this dilemma. In addition, the authors suggest other models of biofeedback in which the role of the practitioner has been expanded and to which a large repertoire of self-regulation techniques have been added. They propose that, in the future, the regulatory capacity of interpersonal interactions is recognized as in the proffered model of biofeedback, dyadic biofeedback (DBF). DBF allows for real-time training of interpersonal interactions, emphasizing learning through direct observation and active involvement, thus making a return to Miller's model.

Estimates of a worker's causal relationship (CR) to production obeyed associative principles, despite the participants’ a priori beliefs that workers are responsible or “at cause” for production. In three experiments, social analogues of conditioned stimuli (workers) and unconditioned stimuli (company production information) were manipulated in familiar Pavlovian paradigms. The findings included (1) CR acquisition, (2) unconditioned stimulus-intensity effects, and (3) CR blocking. The research plan employed an approach that Neal Miller (1959) termed “extension of liberalized S-R theory” and drew on the Rescorla-Wagner model to integrate the experimental results, to illuminate the empirical data of social attribution research, and to guide the study of causal relationship detection using social stimuli.

Reading and analyzing Paula Vogel’s plays, the readers can attest that she achieves success in drama or theater because she is passionate about theater. Vogel is a modern American playwright who won the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for drama. Her success and insight in playwriting or in adapting do not come all of a sudden; she is influenced by many writers. Vogel is influenced by many American dramatists, including Eugene O’ Neill, Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, and Edward Albee, and by other non-American writers, including August Strindberg, Anton Chekhove, and Bertolt Brecht. Certainly, there were female playwrights who wrote preeminent plays and they influence Vogel as well. Nevertheless, dramas by female writers, as a matter of fact, remain marginalized. This paper focuses on the influence of some female playwrights on Vogel.

It is often said that the federal government needs to be more like the private sector (Brooks, 2013; Campbell, 2011; Harvey, 2012; Miller, 2013; Neal, 2013; Schnurer, 2013). However, after reading Jones and Stout's (2015) summary of private-sector antinepotism policies, we wonder whether the opposite is true when it comes to nepotism and cronyism: Should the private sector be more like the federal government? According to Jones and Stout, many organizations have antinepotism policies that prohibit the employment of the friends and family of current employees. We believe that these policies might go too far, and we propose that the policies used by the federal government could serve as a model for private-sector organizations. We also think that the federal government can shed some light on why organizations want to prohibit nepotism and cronyism.

This study aims to conduct a trial to determine the validity and reliability of the self-regulation scale and determine what dimensions/aspects are considered capable of forming self-regulation variables. Validity and reliability tests are carried out to determine a measuring instrument’s level of accuracy and consistency. This self-regulation variable is measured by the seven dimensions of Miller & Brown (Neal & Carey, 2005), namely receiving, evaluating, triggering, searching, formulating, implementing, and assessing. Thirty-six students at Islamic boarding school X in Banyumas, Indonesia, were involved as participants. Analysis of the data used to measure validity using the corrected item-total correlation formula and reliability using Cronbach’s alpha, which was analyzed using SPSS version 25. The analysis results prove that from the seven dimensions of self-regulation, there are 25 valid items and have a reliability coefficient of 0.908. Thus, the self-regulation scale can be used for research.

Selle väljaselgitamiseks korraldati ülevaateuuring, milles osales 3521 õpilast 6. ja 9. klassist. DIGCOMPi raamistikust lähtudes hindasid õpilased, kui sageli nad kasutavad nutiseadmeid õppimiseks loodusainetes ja matemaatikas. Õpilased jagati hierarhilise klasteranalüüsi abil viide rühma: sünnipärased digikodanikud, infoinimesed, suhtlevad infoinimesed, loomeinimesed ja nutiseadmete mittekasutajad. Neist nelja esimese profiilid iseloomustavad eri viisil nutiseadmete kasutajaid, keda on kokku ligikaudu pool valimisse kuulunud õpilastest. Teise poole moodustavad nutiseadmete mittekasutajad, kelle seas saab eristada täpsemaid alarühmi (kokku 11). Alarühmade võrdlemine võimaldab kavandada viise, kuidas kujundada nutiseadmete kasutamise harjumust. This article summarizes evidence from meta-analyses of outdoor education, psychotherapy, and education which can he used to help determine the relative efficacy of adventure therapy programs. The major outdoor education meta-analysis by Hattie, Marsh, Neill, and Richards (1997) cites an effect size of .34 for immediate program effectiveness. Meta-analytic studies of innovative education programs in school settings report similar effects (Hattie et al., Hattie, 1992, 1993), while psychological training meta-analyses report slightly higher effects (Lipsey & Wilson, 1993), and meta-analyses of psychotherapy effectiveness find stronger effects (Casey St Berman, 1985; Smith, Glass, & Miller, 1980). This article derives outcome benchmarks for adventure therapy program outcomes taken from existing outdoor education, psychological, and educational meta-analyses, and recommends that the benchmarks be used in adventure therapy research and evaluation to allow for more accurate assessments of program's effectiveness. The suggested benchmarks should be used only as guides, and should be refined in future by meta-analyses of adventure therapy outcomes.

Artiklis arutletakse meetodi teoreetiliste, metodoloogiliste ja praktiliste kaalutluste üle. Esiteks osutatakse mõningatele ajaloolistele juurtele. Sellele järgneb lühiülevaade holistlik-interaktsioonilisest uurimisparadigmast, mis moodustab indiviidikeskse käsitlusviisi üldise raami. Sellel käsitlusviisil on olemas nii teoreetiline kui ka metodoloogiline pool. Peale peamiste teoreetiliste tõekspidamiste tutvustatakse ka enam levinud indiviidikeskseid meetodeid. Indiviidile suunatud käsitlusviisi tuumaks on süsteemne vaade, mille kohaselt moodustavad süsteemi komponendid mustri, mida võiks pidada jagamatuks. Seda mustrit tuleks mõista ja uurida ühe tervikuna, mitte jagada tükkideks (variaabliteks/muutujateks), et neid tükke seejärel eraldiseisvate ühikutena uurida. Abstract:

In the late 1930s, the Institute of Human Relations of Yale University developed a research program on conflict and anxiety as an outcome of Clark Hull's informal seminar on the integration of Freud's and Pavlov's theories. The program was launched at the 1937 Annual Meeting of the APA in a session chaired by Clark L. Hull, and the experiments continued through 1941, when the United States entered the Second World War. In an effort to apply the findings from animal experiments to the war situation, John Dollard and Neal E. Miller decided to study soldiers' fear reactions in combat. As a first step, they arranged interviews with a few veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. Taking these interviews as a point of departure, Dollard devised a questionnaire to which 300 former Lincoln brigaders responded. The present paper analyzes the main outcomes of the questionnaire, together with the war experiences reported in the interview transcripts. Our purpose was to evaluate a project which was initially investigated by the FBI because of the communists among the Lincoln ranks, but eventually supported by the American Army, and which exerted great influence on the military psychology of the time.

The postmodern and post-truth world we live in might have reached its zenith. Written for the general public and not specifically information professionals, Laura A. Millar’s A Matter of Facts: The Value of Evidence in an Information Age grapples with the definitions of data, facts, evidence, and truth and how these parts of information are used and abused in modern society. This volume is the first in the Archival Futures series, jointly published by the Society of American Archivists (SAA) and ALA Neal-Schuman, which will demonstrate “how the preservation and stewardship of the archival record is a collective effort that underpins and supports democratic societies and institutions” (viii). Dr. Millar is an obvious choice to lead the series, given her notable career as an independent consultant and her numerous publications on creating and maintaining archives during the last 30 years. Her passion for the field and conviction in the importance of her topic are apparent throughout the text.

Abstract:

Artikli aluseks on 2014. aastal Eesti Kõrghariduse Kvaliteediagentuuris tehtud institutsionaalse akrediteerimise hindamisaruannete kvalitatiivne analüüs, millega selgitati välja Eesti kõrgkoolide peamised tugevad ja nõrgad küljed. Artikli eesmärk on teavitada haridusüldsust rahvusvaheliste ekspertide hinnangutest ja soovitustest Eesti kõrgkoolidele ning pakkuda kõrgkoolide juhtkondadele tuge tõenduspõhiste muudatuste tegemisel. Uuringu valimi moodustasid kümme kõrgkooli, mis olid 2014. aasta juuniks positiivselt akrediteeritud. Analüüsi tulemused osutasid, et kõrgkoolid on edukad personali- ja ressursijuhtimises, nende taristu on väga heal tasemel ning üldjuhul on kõrgkoolide lõpetajad konkurentsivõimelised nii Eestis kui ka rahvusvaheliselt. Uuringust ilmnes ka selge vajadus kõrgkoolide tegevust fookustada, arendada piiratud ressursi tingimustes neid valdkondi, milles ollakse tugevad, ning loobuda valdkondadest, kus puudub kriitiline hulk üliõpilasi ja/või heal tasemel õppejõude. Vaja on muuta kõrgkoolis õppimise ja õpetamise paradigmat, liikudes traditsioonilise õppejõu- ja ainekeskse õpetamise juurest iga õppija individuaalset ja sotsiaalset arengut toetava koostöise õppimise ja õpetamise suunas. Eesti kõrghariduse kestlikkuse seisukohast on samuti oluline lisada rahvusvaheline mõõde kõikidesse kõrgkooli põhiprotsessidesse, sh nendes kõrgkoolides, mis on orienteeritud ainult siseturule. Abstract:

Ettevõtlikkuse ja ettevõtluspädevuse toetamiseks on loodud mitmeid programme (Junior Achievementi õpilasfirmade programm, ettevõtlusteater, ettevõtlike koolide võrgustik, ettevõtlusõppe valikaine), mis on eri rõhuasetusega ning milles kasutatakse eri meetodeid. Seetõttu on oluline kirjeldada programmide tähendust ja erisusi ettevõtlikkuspädevuse arendamise kontekstis. Artiklis võetakse vaatluse alla enamik Eesti ettevõtlusprogramme, käsitledes neid vähe uuritud perspektiivist: milline on programmide mõju arenguuskumustele ning sotsiaalsetele oskustele? Uuringu valimisse kuuluvad üldhariduskoolide 8. klasside õpilased, kes kas osalevad (sekkumisgrupp, N = 198) või ei osale ettevõtlusõppe programmides (kontrollgrupp, N = 125). Õppijaid hinnatakse arenguuskumuste ja enesehinnanguliste sotsiaalsete oskuste alusel enne ja pärast ettevõtlusõppe programmis osalemist. Tulemused viitavad, et arenguuskumustes ja enesehinnangulistes sotsiaalsetes oskustes ei ilmne erinevusi ei enne ega pärast programmis osalemist, eri programmide ega sekkumis- ja kontrollgrupi vahel. Samuti ei ilmne eri võimekusega õpilaste rühmade vahel uuritud näitajate puhul statistiliselt olulisi erinevusi. Üks võimalik selgitus tulemustele on, et motivatsiooni või sotsiaalsete oskustega seotud alapädevusi ei teadvustata ettevõtluspädevuse osana. Tulemused osutavad võimalustele, kuidas saaks ettevõtlusprogrammide õpetajaid ja õppijaid senisest veelgi paremini toetada, näiteks aidates ettevõtlikkuspädevust alapädevuste kaupa mõtestada. Abstract:

Artiklis antakse ülevaade 2013. aasta kevadel Tartu ülikoolis kaitstud bakalaureusetööst, milles uuriti eesti kirjakeele kasutust 19. sajandi teisel poolel. Lisaks oli töö eesmärgiks anda selgem ülevaade eesti kirjakeele keskmurdepärasusest. Uurimismaterjaliks olid Peetri kihelkonna kohtuprotokollid aastatest 1869.–1870. ja 1884. Analüüsiti kohtuprotokollide ortograafiat, häälikulisi jooni ja morfoloogiat. Iga uurimisaspekti käsitleti mõlema perioodi kohtuprotokollides eraldi ning seejärel võrreldi kahe perioodi keelekasutust. Selgus, et mõlema perioodi kirjapanekutes on sarnasusi Peetri murrakuga, aga neid ilmneb rohkem 1869.–1870. aasta protokollides. Esimese perioodi kohtuprotokollide kirjapanemisel on lähtutud vanast kirjaviisist ning neid iseloomustavad rohked paralleelvormid ja häälikuline varieeruvus. Teise perioodi kohtuprotokollides oli kasutusel uus kirjaviis ning need on keeleliselt ühtlasemad ja tänapäeva eesti kirjakeelega sarnasemad. See näitab eesti kirjakeele seisundi tugevnemist juba 1880. aastatel.Transition from the old orthography to the new during the second half of the 19th century based on the court protocols of Peetri parish. The aim of this paper is to give an overview of the research which examined how the old orthography was replaced by the new during the second half of the 19th century. In addition, this study illustrated the resemblance of the 19th century’s Estonian written language and the Estonian central dialect. The data from the court protocols of the parish Peetri were analysed for that purpose. The practical section focused on the study of orthography, phonetic features and the morphology were studied. The research revealed that the court protocols from the first period were written using the old orthography and the court protocols from the second period were mostly written using the new orthography. In the court protocols from the first period there are more parallel forms and phonetic variety. In conclusion, protocols from both period there were typical features of the Peetri dialect.

Abstract:

Õppeedukus on üks peamistest näitajatest, mille põhjal ennustada edasist töist edu. Samas on varasemad uuringud näidanud, et paljudes riikides on rändetaustaga lastel keeruline saavutada emakeeles haridust omandavate eakaaslastega samaväärseid õpitulemusi. Hoolimata hariduspürgimustest võib rändetaustaga vanematel olla keeruline oma sotsiaalset ja kultuurilist kapitali konverteerida nii, et see toetaks nende laste saavutusi sihtriigis. Iirimaa on huvitav näide, sest selles riigis toimus mitmekesise taustaga sisserändajate (paljud neist eurooplased) laialdane ja kiire ühinemine koolisüsteemiga, kus õpivad valdavalt valged, iiri- ja ingliskeelsed katoliiklikest peredest pärit lapsed. Toetudes rändetaustaga laste ja noorte akadeemilist edukust käsitlevale ulatuslikule teaduskirjandusele, uuritakse siinses töös üheksa-aastaste rändetaustaga laste akadeemilist edukust uues sisseränderiigis vahetult pärast sisserände kõrghetke. Tulemused näitavad, et erinevalt paljudest vanadest sisserändajaid vastu võtvatest riikidest jäävad sisserändajate saavutused Iirimaal vaid veidi maha kohalike laste tasemest, kusjuures sotsiaalne ja kultuuriline kapital mõjutab oluliselt lugemisoskust inglise keeles, eriti Ida-Euroopa lastel, kelle puhul oli lõhe suurim. Hiljutiste rändetaustaga laste keelelise lõimumise mustrite adumine võib aidata meil mõista neid protsesse laste ja nende perekondade hilisema liikumise korral Euroopas. Full text

Abstract:

This paper reports the results of a production study whose aim was to ascertain whether Estonian exhibits the regularity whereby verbs are unaccented when they are in focus together with an adjacent object. The study also examined whether this regularity holds when the verb is in sentence-final position, or when it is separated from the object by an intervening adjunct. The results suggest that in all these cases the verb is unaccented, unlike when it is complemented only by an adjunct. More generally, these results show that Estonian belongs to the category of languages with plastic sentence accent placement, and that predicate-argument structure is one of the factors that determine sentence accent placement in Estonian. The results also raise questions for future research concerning the theoretical interpretation of the descriptive observations made in the study.Kokkuvõte. Heete Sahkai ja Ann Veismann: Argumentstruktuur ja verbi lauserõhulisus eesti keeles. Artiklis tutvustatakse uurimust, mille eesmärk oli kindlaks teha, kas eesti keeles kehtib levinud seaduspära, et koos objektiga fookuses olev verb ei kanna lauserõhku. Uurimuses kontrolliti seaduspära kehtimist ka juhtudel, kus verb asub lause lõpus või ei paikne objektiga kõrvuti, vaid on lahutatud sellest vaba laiendiga. Tulemused näitavad, et kõigil neil juhtudel on verb rõhutu, erinevalt juhtumist, kus verbi laiendab üksnes vaba määrus. Uurimuse üldisem tulemus on, et eesti keel kuulub tüpoloogiliselt plastilise lauserõhu asukohaga keelte hulka ning et argumentstruktuur on üks neist teguritest, mis määravad lauserõhu asukohta eesti keeles. Tulemused tõstatavad ka edasist uurimist nõudvaid küsimusi, mis puudutavad eelkõige kirjeldatud seaduspärade teoreetilist tõlgendamist.Märksõnad: eesti keel, lauserõhk, deaktsentueerimine, argumentstruktuur
