In 1942, at age twenty, after a vision-impaired and rebellious childhood in Richmond, Virginia, Nell Blaine decamped for New York. Operations had corrected her eyesight, and she was newly aware of modern art, so different from the literal style of her youthful drawings. In Manhattan, she met rising young artists and poets. Her life was hectic, with raucous parties in her loft, lovers of both sexes, and freelance design jobs, including a stint at the Village Voice. Initially drawn to the rigorous formalism of Piet Mondrian, she received critical praise for her jazzy abstractions. During the 195

In the late thirteenth century and first half of the fourteenth century, Churchmen and Church councils repeatedly endeavoured to impose order on the ecclesiastical landscape. Instead of actively creating a rubric under which ‘semi’—or ‘quasi’—religious (such as tertiaries and beguines) could be given an official canonical existence, men responsible for the spiritual care (cura) of such women attempted to connect them more closely to traditional religious orders. This article examines, from a comparative perspective, four instances of such violence. Although the second half of the twentieth century has seen serious reversals in the fortunes of organized labor, the rise of labor politics between 1935 and the 1960s left a lasting legacy. In many respects, labor unions in the New Deal era acted as the ideological lodestar of social democratic politics, pushing elected politicians to reconfigure the balance between management and labor in industrial relations policy.
