Abstract: In 1932, to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Azores, the azorean poet and fictionist Vitorino Nemésio (1901-1978) coined the neologism 'azoreanity' to express the Azorean's peculiar existence, which was deeply marked by their insular condition. This dissertation intends to identify and analyze some central elements of Nemésio's 'azoreanity' condition through his work of fictional narrative. In order to do that, we examined his first novel Varanda de Pilatos (1927 ), his three short stories in A Casa Fechada (1937) and his last novel, Mau Tempo no Canal (1944). The analysis of Varanda de Pilatos and A Casa Fechada revealed, in some aspects, an ambiguous character of the 'feminine'. The syncretism of a pagan mythical origin and a Christian one, conceived of this ambiguous character. Initially, the syncretism was expressed via the evocation of the myths of Vesta/Venus and of the Virgin Mary. These myths, however, unfolded into other feminine myths, which on the one hand kept the matrix of the double 'feminine' Lilith/Eve, and on the other hand the 'feminine' as the expression of chtonic and telluric forces that go back to Classical Mythology. Nonetheless, this syncretism was not presented in a 'static' fashion. Under a chronological perspective, these narratives mirrowed a progressive 'dilution' of these myths, which culminated in Nemésio's last novel Mau Tempo no Canal. We could say that these narratives, to a certain extent, narrate the process of concealment and syncretism of these feminine myths, and at the same time narrate their mbourgeoisement, since, according to our reading, it is from the masculine drama originated in the context of marriage of convenience that the nemesian 'feminine' is formed, although not exclusively. In fact, the recurrent nemesian conflict consists of the marriage ofconvinience as an obstacle for the reunion of lovers. In this way, we could say that the nemesian 'feminine' was built on the social context of the insular Azorean and their religious peculiarity, and, concomitantly, it was founded in the mythical conception of the Earth; i.e., the nemesian 'feminine' would be characterized by its liminal condition, between the 'local' (restricted) and the 'universal', between the 'sacred' and the 'profane', between Good and Evil, between the witch and the saint, the devil and the 'divine', between the enigma's shadow and the knowledge's light. Therefore, to think of Vitorino Nemésio's 'azoreanity' implies thinking of the relation between the insular 'masculine' and 'feminine', which we believe constitutes the essential trait of his 'azoreanity', i.e., of his poetics

Full textFor the first time in the history, around the thirties of the nineteenth century, cholera reaches Europe coming from Asia. Until the end of the century, both Medical Science and Literature deal with it as a common subject of investigation: they try to inspect the causes of this unknown disease under a scientific, eschatological and social or human perspective. Both the branches of knowledge overlap their area of interest about cholera up to the first half of the century; for instance, Literature offers its creative linguistic archive to the study, whereas Pasteur and Koch’s researches enhance the European narrative imaginary in English, French and Italian cultural contexts. Medical Science and Literature go along a parallel path but cholera lingers as incurable disease. In particular, Literature gives many facets to this ailment: images of cholera are linked to a traveler under the shape of an avenger or to a cursed pilgrim and sometimes to a ubiquitous presence: they all come from East to punish Western populations and a supernatural force pushes them. Furthermore, cholera is a kind of poison that a plague-spreader, as spokesperson for a social redemption, has disseminated in the city in disguise of a foreign wanderer, a political opponent or a doomed scientist. Eventually, cholera is an upsetting occurrence able to subvert individuals’ life and their moral values because leads them to mental degeneration: protagonists are able to commit crimes of passion and to take revenge. Cholera becomes expression of a nemesis in each of these literary characterizations, portrayed like divine justice, social justice or human justice.

Gothing, Grant Edward. "Development of the "Discretized Dynamic Expanding Zones with Memory" Autonomous Mobility Algorithm for the Nemesis Tracked Vehicle Platform." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/34404.
Full textThe Nemesis tracked vehicle platform is a differentially driven Humanitarian Demining tractor developed by Applied Research Associates, Inc. The vehicle is capable of teleoperational control and is outfitted with a sensor suite used for detecting and neutralizing landmines. Because the detection process requires the vehicle to travel at speeds less than 0.5 km/h, teleoperation is a tedious process. The added autonomous capabilities of waypoint navigation and obstacle avoidance could greatly reduce operator fatigue.
ARA chose to leverage Virginia Tech's experience in developing an autonomous mobility capability for the Nemesis platform. The resulting algorithms utilize the waypoint navigation techniques of Virginia Tech's JAUS (Joint Architecture for Unmanned Systems) toolkit, and a modified version of the Dynamic Expanding Zones (DEZ) algorithm developed for the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge. The modified approach discretizes the perception zones of the DEZ algorithm and provides the added capability of obstacle memory, resulting in the Discretized Dynamic Expanding Zones with Memory (DDEZm) algorithm. These additions are necessary for efficient autonomous control of the differentially driven Nemesis vehicle.
The DDEZm algorithm was coded in LabVIEW and used to autonomously navigate the Nemesis vehicle through a waypoint course while avoiding obstacles. The Joint Architecture for Unmanned Systems (JAUS) was used as the communication standard to facilitate the interoperability between the software developed at Virginia Tech and the existing Nemesis software developed by ARA. In addition to development and deployment, the algorithm has been fully documented for embedded coding by a software engineer. With embedded implementation on the vehicle, this algorithm will help to increase the efficiency of the landmine detection process, ultimately saving lives.

Full textAmong the plans that Albert Camus has established to his work it has prevailed, in his writings and declarations, the triple that includes cycles of absurd, revolt and love. Each one of the cycles would be composed at least of a theater play, a novel and an essay. Besides, they are also followed by a central myth, being Sisyphus, Prometheus and Nemesis. After Camus sudden death at age 46, he left some traces of what would it be consisted his third cycle: the unfinished novel The first man, notes about the play Don Faust and elements for the essay The myth of Nemesis. The presented research reunites and contextualizes the traces let by Camus around his relationship with the myth of Nemesis in order to offer a reading key to his work and to expose a formal, thematic and philosophical overview of this essay project.

Full textPurpose: In clinical practice routinely used method of TOF test is visual method of interpretation. This method does not provide completely reliable data in period of spontaneous recovery from neuromuscular blockade. It is necessary to investigate possibility of application of more specific and more accurate method in TOF monitoring, such as quantitative TOF method. Determination of difference between the values of T1 and T4 muscle contraction, obtained by quantitative TOF method, may indicate the presence of neuromuscular blockade on tested muscle. In addition to this, by application of quantitative TOF method, it is necessary to determine is there a difference in period of recovery from neuromuscular blockade between defferent muscles. Comparison of T4/T1 ratios between different muscles may indicate presence of different period of recovery from neuromuscular blockade. Methods: Study analyzed differences between recovery of foot - abductor hallucis muscle and hand - first dorsal interosseous muscle by application of quantitative TOF test on 147 patients undergoing lumbar spine surgery. T1 to T4 decrements on hand and foot TOF were determined and classified into different groups, depending of neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBA) dose and elapsed time after administration. T1 - T4 decrements were compared between hand and foot TOF and differences between muscle recovery were determined. Visual method of TOF test was performed by anesthesiologists, by using peripheral nerve stimulator and stimulating ulnar nerve. Quantitative TOF test was measured on first dorsal interosseous muscle, and compared with visual TOF results obtained on adductor pollicis muscle. Results: There are significant differences between T1 - T4 decrements obtained on tested muscles of hand and foot (p<0.05). T1-T4 decrement determined on abductor hallucis muscle had lower values, respectively more rapid recovery, than first dorsal interosseous muscle (p<0.05). Quantitative method of TOF test had reliable and correct results in all tested subjects, while visual interpretation of TOF method showed accurate results in 40 % of all cases. Results indicated that significant difference was present between quantitative and visual method of TOF interpretation. Conclusions: Difference between observed recovery of hand and foot muscles is indicating that quantitative TOF test should be performed on specific site for which accurate data about the level of neuromuscular blockade is needed. During lumbar spine surgery, in addition to hand TOF, foot TOF should be included as it provides more accurate data needed for neurophysiological intraoperative monitoring. Quantitative TOF method provides more accurate data about level of neuromuscular blockade if compared with subjective visual TOF method.

The study aims to analyze the translation skills in Chinese version For me to Live is Christ which includes some connotations in the translation, sentences structures and words applied. Also, it does some critical comments on the correction of the translation. And, it makes a clear explanation on the contents for non-Christian readers. The original book was written by Nemesio Garcia in 1998 and was translated by Ricky Yeh. The whole book reveals how the author fought with disease through his life of the last 10 years. Although the ten times of fighting with his cardiac disease, he lived with happiness and joy by his faith. This commentary consists of four parts: Part one introduces the author’s motivation of writing the book, its influence on different fields and the purposes of the study. Part two discusses some controversial words in translation such as the family names, and the difference between the religious words and secular words. Part three is the methodology. There are five methods being analyzed in this commentary which are adding words with explanation, deduction, sentences reordering, the synonymous translation with an opposite method and using idioms. Part four is the conclusion of this commentary.

Full textAlthough Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772 1834), an English poet of the Romantic period, is now celebrated as one of the most important public figures of his time, his professional and private lives prove that this status he presently has was widely challenged during his lifetime. He was frequently criticised by his contemporaries, while his poems, Christabel (1816) in particular, were generally misunderstood and rejected as not worthy of his name. This poem, the one we focused on in this thesis, acted as a true nemesis, the key enemy, which happened to be one of the reasons why Coleridge's friendship with his best friend William Wordsworth (1770 1850) began to fade. The following two ideas guided us in writing this thesis. The first idea involves the nature of Coleridge and Wordsworth's friendship. These poets marked the end of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth century. They became close friends in 1797. Their friendship resulted, among other things, in a joint collection of poems, Lyrical Ballads (1798), whose publication is generally taken as the beginning of Romanticism in England. This complex friendship, with its implications, motivated us to undertake this research. Our second guiding idea is Coleridge's unfinished poem Christabel. It was supposed to conclude the second edition of Lyrical Ballads (1800). Unfortunately, Wordsworth decided to exclude it which devastated Coleridge poetically and psychologically. Profoundly disturbed by Wordsworth's decision, among other reasons, Coleridge turned to opium, lamenting over lost poetic powers. Christabel consequently became a true nemesis for Coleridge, which as some sort of a spell, tormented Coleridge till his death. This dissertation is divided into two parts. The first will explore the nature of Coleridge and Wordsworth's friendship. The second will focus on the analysis of Christabel which initiated the disintegration of the poets'strong friendship and prolific collaboration.

Moquist, Tod Nolan. "Nemesis and Fulness: Reinhold Niebuhr's Vision of History, 1927-1934." Thesis, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10756/288507.
Full textThere are many excellent studies of the life and thought of Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971), prominent Christian ethicist, social philosopher, and political activist of the American Century. Most studies focus on his mature works of mid-century, particularly his theological ethics. The following study treats his emergent theory of history between 1927-1934, especially the idea of progress and the narrative of modern capitalist society. During this formative period Niebuhr wrote three major books (Does Civilization Need Religion? [1927], Moral Man and Immoral Society [1932], and Reflections on the End of an Era [1934]) which reflect his intellectual passage from religious liberalism and the politics of persuasion to "Christian-Marxism" and the politics of power. The following thesis will trace the diverse historiographical influences found in these works, from the church-historical perspective of Ernst Troeltsch to the dialectical materialism of Karl Marx. It is common to say that Niebuhr was purely a theologian of history. But following Ricoeur and White, I describe the main ingredients of a philosophy of history that are present in these writings: myth, plot, social processes, patterns of progress and cycle. Moreover, he was a "thinker in time"--these philosophical elements combined to render a plausible and meaningful narrative context for social action. In the early period Niebuhr began his lifelong critique of Enlightenment, capitalism, and the idea of progress. Following Robert Nisbet's analysis of the concept of progress in Western cultural history, I will argue that Niebuhr traverses his own peculiar dialectics of history, moving from the idea of progress-as-freedom (in the twenties) to the idea of progress-as-power (in the thirties); from the form of irony to the form of tragedy; from the concept of the voluntary reform of the excesses of captialism to the concept of the frank use of coercion to implement a socialist alternative to captialism. His philosophy of history in this period thus reflects in Christian idiom aspects of the very antinomies of the Enlightenment regarding personality and power, freedom and fate, which he desires to overcome.

Full textThe cost performance of a wide range of public sector infrastructure projects completed by a contractor are analysed and discussed. Change-orders after a contract to construct an asset was signed were, on average, found to contribute to a 23.75% increase in project costs. A positive association between an increase in change orders and the contractor’s margin were identified. Taxpayers pay for this additional cost, while those charged with constructing assets are rewarded with an increase in their margins. As the public sector embraces an era of digitisation, there is a need to improve the integration of design and construction activities and engender collaboration to ensure assets can be delivered cost effectively and future-proofed. The research paper provides empirical evidence for the public sector to re-consider the processes that are used to deliver their infrastructure assets so as to reduce the propensity for cost overruns and enable future-proofing to occur.
