Abstract:
Abstract This paper examines one of the most notorious scandals of sixteenth-century France. In 1557, Françoise de Rohan, a lady-in-waiting to Catherine de Medici, launched a legal battle to get the duke of Nemours, Jacques de Savoie, to recognize their orally-agreed marriage contract and formally recognize the child whom he had fathered with her. Central to Rohan’s case were not only the love-letters Nemours had written to her but also the eye-witness testimonies of her servants, who had overheard their marriage vows and had witnessed their love-making. Nemours’s only defense was his word of honor as a gentleman that no marriage had taken place. This paper situates the case of Rohan vs. Nemours within a transitory period in French society as oral and literate cultures competed for precedence, and asks what happens to the concept of honor when the spoken word is no longer to be trusted.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVES/SPECIFIC AIMS: As part of a larger effort to create a longitudinal record of care for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Delaware, we assessed transitions of care from pediatric to adult care. This study examined the length of time between last pediatric contact and first contact in the adult system in order to determine characteristics associated with delayed transition to adult care. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: Patients who receive pediatric care at the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children (Nemours) are transitioned to adult care between the ages of 18 and 21. Our study population consists of all patients seen in the Nephrology unit at Nemours for CKD, hypertension (HTN), or diabetes who turned 21 years old between 2007 and 2013. Records of office visits from Nemours, Christiana Care Health System (CCHS), and Nephrology Associates, P.A. (NAPA) were transformed into the OMOP common data model and merged. Patients who had at least 1 record in the Nemours EHR of pediatric care before age 21 and had at least 1 record in the CCHS or NAPA adult EHRs were considered transitioned. To identify characteristics associated with delayed transition to adult care, we compared gender, race, ethnicity, age, comorbidities, and level of kidney function at the last pediatric visit between patients whose transition gap was less than 1 year and patients whose gap was 1 year or more. Kidney function was estimated by calculating glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Nemours estimates GFR in children using the revised Schwartz equation, which is based on serum creatinine and height. To calculate adult GFR, we used the CKD-Epi equation, which is based on serum creatinine, age, sex, and race and is widely used to derive adult GFR. As kidney function declines, GFR decreases. We used Fisher exact test to compare categorical variables and t-test to compare age and GFR. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: We found only 109 (25%) patients who had records in our adult offices out of the 440 Nemours patients in our data set. Of the 109 transitioned patients, 54 had office visits at CCHS, 37 at NAPA, and 18 at both locations. Examining the office visits of the 109 transitioned patients, 34 (31%) had an overlap in visits defined as an office visit at CCHS or NAPA before the last office visit at Nemours, and 75 (69%) did not have an overlap. The median gap between last pediatric and first adult office visit for the 75 patients without an overlap was 615 days (range 8–3495 d). Only 6 (6%) of the 109 transitioned patients had overlapping GFR measurements from pediatric to adult care, and all of the adult GFR calculations (CKD-Epi) were greater than the pediatric GFR calculations (Schwartz). The difference between child and adult GFR ranged from 8.2 to 87.1 mL/minute per 1.72 m2. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF IMPACT: During the transition from pediatric care to adult care, many young adults with CKD experience declines in health outcomes and comorbidities such as diabetes and HTN complicate self-management. Lack of overlap between pediatric and adult care office visits indicates a delay in executing this transition. In our population of 109 transitioned patients, 69% did not have an overlap in care, and 50% of those without overlap had a gap of more than 615 days (1 y, 8 mo). Our analysis suggests that young adults who are younger at last pediatric office visit are more likely to delay transitioning to adult care. Transitioning from the nurturing environment of pediatric care to adult care is a complex process and could be challenging for young adults with CKD. Transition clinics may be necessary to improve the coordination of care and help these young adults keep their physician appointments.

Abstract:
Aurelie Nemours' work developed on the sidelines of fashions and artistic evolutions of the 20th century, while being anchored into the problems of her epoch: abstraction and the questioning of meaning in pictorial representation. This thesis, titled "Aurelie Nemours, paintings and concepts" aims at tracing back the historical, conceptual and artistic stakes, involved in the uncommon creative evolution of an artist so far poorly known. The first part of the thesis situates Nemours' work in the context of history of art, by following the artist's progression towards abstraction. The second part analyses the four fundamental concepts structuring Nemours' artistic creation, from the study of her pictorial production and interviews she gave towards the end of her life. The square as form of variation is her main concept. It enables her to work with colour as a harmony and the number as the subjacent structure, so as to better reveal rhythm and void as keystones of her work. Although founded on numerical rapports and chromatic harmonies, Nemours' work cannot however be merely reviewed through a formalist analysis: Nemours herself has always claimed a spiritual dimension which brings philosophy into her work. Closer to Malewicz or to Mondrian for her faith in art (which is a form of utopia), considered to be one of the major characters in concrete art, in Max Bill or Joseph Albers' lineage, Nemours creates an authentic work of art, asserting durably geometrical abstraction as a pictorial language and offering vast creative potentialities for contemporary artists

Abstract:
Aurélie Nemours (Paris, 1910-2005) is the most outstanding French figure of the so-called geometrical art in her generation. This descriptive catalogue of her works lists 1180 works created from 1948 to 2005, mostly oil painting, grouped within 20 families, adding stained , glass windows of the Notre Dame de Salagon and the Alignments of the twenty-first century in Rennes. In the light of comments by the artist and of her poetry, the catalogue tries to follow the inner logic of her course and to point out her originality. Aurélie Nemours begins in the wake of cubism. Without knowing the pioneers of abstract art, she develops a formal vocabulary which approximates constructive art, but she rapidly acquires an entirely personal abstraction. In the potential of a geometrical - the point and its versions in line and plane - she seeks to express an inmost experience lived up to the universal, suggesting the totality, the unity, the infinity of the being, in the multiplicity, the diversity, the individuality of the world. The plane requires the colour : Aurelie Nemours works it with subtlety, sensitivity balancing exactitude. Her works are mostly conserved in private collections, 1/5 in public collections, maily in France, and besides in Germany and Switzerland

Cerveaux, Augustin. ""From an art to a science" : chimie colloïdale, pigments et recherche fondamentale chez Du Pont de Nemours, 1900-1945." Strasbourg, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010STRA6154.

Abstract:
This dissertation deals with the emergence and growth of colloid chemistry in the early twentieth century, focusing particularly on the history of the colloid group set up at Du Pont, a major American chemical company, during the interwar period. It explores the relationship between the scientific issues raised by “colloidal” substances, and the technical, industrial and economic dimensions of the associated materials. The concept of “ontological shift of materials”, recently forged by two historians of chemistry, is appropriated as an interpretative framework to account for these evolutions in colloid science and technology. The paint and varnish industry, whose materials were then largely considered as colloidal, is taken as a major case study to analyze these relationships and evolutions, and its history is explored since the beginning of the century. The group was propelled by the quantification of the microstructure of these materials, in order to better explain and master their practical properties. The dissertation details why and how this new understanding of the properties of many substances on the basis of their microscopic components became, from the interwar onwards, embedded in the “rationalization” of the properties of materials, the processes to produce them, as well as the associated patents. This rationalization of products and processes is concomitant to the emergence of mass consumption – and the new emphasis on the “consumer” figure within companies – of industrially produced goods, particularly those of the paint and varnish industry

Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on the relationship between a large-scale firm, du pont de nemours, and the federal state in the u. S. , from the 1910s to the 1950s. Rather than a purely institutional or economic analysis, ces relationship are analyzed thru the history of a group of chemical engineers. These engineers developed nylon in the 1930s and plutonium for atomic bombs in the 1940s and later. In so doing, they changed their firm, by securing close connections with the state while meeting the demand from civilian consumers, eager to get nylons. Three levels of analysis are interwoven: the microhistorical level (a professional group and its technical work); an intermediate level, that of the organization, and its political and technical culture; and that of the american political economy and the emergence of the expert as the central political paragigm of post world war 2 america. These levels of analysis are connected to one another by the history of our chemical engineers' careers. By being at the crossroads of several marketsm they had strategic positions in the firm, which boosted their careers to the very top of corporate america

Abstract:
The issue of the thesis is to discuss and compare two works too often considered minor in the history of mathematics, despite the reputation of their respective authors, the Data of Euclid (third century. BCE) and the De numeris datis of Jordanus de Nemore (first half of the thirteenth century. ). The thesis is organized into two main parts. The first part is devoted first to a careful comparison of the structure of the Propositions contained in Euclid's Elements, and of those in his Data. The comparison then gives the precise content to Pappus's statements, somehow general, about the role that the Data played in the analytical method. The results are fïnally confirmed and reinforced by highlighting the use of reasoning using "strings of givens" as an analysis in some propositions of the Conics of Apollonius. The second part established, between the De numeris Datis and the De elementis arithmetice artis of Jordanus Nemore, a correspondence analogous to that which had been proposed between the Data and the Elements of Euclid. And this part reveals, between two parties of every Proposition in the De numeris datis, a relationship analogous to the method and structure "analysis-synthesis" that have been highlighted in the context of Greek geometry. The thesis also highlights the difference in approaches of the two authors, suggesting that Euclid seems seeking to provide an axiomatic-deductivefoundation for geometrical analysis while the Jordanus' interest is rather the effectiveness of the use of "strings of givens" for the analysis of problems on numbers

Abstract:
Nemosis is a cell activation process – induced in vitro when sound mesenchymal cells are forced to cluster (spheroids) – which inevitably leads to a programmed necrotic cell death. Fibroblasts are the most commonly found cells in the dental pulp. The first aim of this study was to confirm that nemotic reaction could be observed in these cells and to compare their behaviour with that of sound lung fibroblasts, employed as a reference model for nemosis. This process displayed not only important similarities but also differences between the two cell types studied regarding cytokines release, proteolytic enzymes production and gene expressions. The second purpose of this work was to discriminate between nemosis and necroptosis, which is a programmed necrotic cell death. Finally, this study aimed to highlight whether this nemotic cell activation can occur in vivo during dental pulp diseases

Abstract:
Abstract: Charles Lasnon, "mouleur",represents the coexistence between the Arts and Crafts and the new rendering techniques related to photography that took place in the first quarter of the twentieth century. Commissioned by Le Corbusier, Lasnon made in those years several models that represent his new proposals at a domestic and urban scale. That was the first approach to a three-dimensional expression of his theories –the scale models of 1:20 from "Salon d'Automne" in 1922 and 1923, which were halfway between objet-types and avant-garde sculptures, and the theories of "L'Urbanisme à trois dimensions" from Plan Obus and Nemours. The scale-models of "Villas" were established as “aesthetic and architectural manifestos”. They were used to test theoretical and plastic principles, formulated before the idea of construction. These tests resulted in "transfers" between plaster-craft scale models and the architecture to be built. Additionally, the links between Lasnon and the “Service Geographique de l’Armée” enabled him to be familiar with new techniques to represent landscape. Thus, Lasnon made the Carte-Reliefs d'Argel at the same time as Le Corbusier made the models for the urban proposals in Alger. These models not only guarantee the geometrical accuracy of his proposals, but also capture an original landscape whose topography is modeled as if it was a plastic craftwork. Utopias seeking an imaginary place on a plaster slice. Palabras clave: maqueta; moulage; Charles Lasnon; urbanismo; plan-relief; Salón de Otoño. Full text
Abstract:
The identification of the origins of what we now call the theory of elastic stability is not an easy task. Most authors trace the origins to the pioneering work of Leonhard Euler in 1744, and some (including this author) shift this origin to the experimental works of Petrus van Musschenbroek in 1729. However, other contemporary authors interested in the history of the discipline postulate that the works of Medieval and Renaissance scholars should be considered as the true sources of the buckling studies performed in the XVIII Century. This paper reports our historical research using original manuscripts of Al-Khazini, Jordanus de Nemore, Leonardo da Vinci, and Marini Merssene, in order to discuss what kind of knowledge they had about the topics of stability and lateral deflections of columns under axial loads. Our investigation shows that there were observations of the phenomenon considered, but those observations were not translated into a deeper understanding of the phenomenon, so that the causes of this effect or the role of strength on the response were not considered. Leonardo was closer to understanding the nature of the problem and produced some tentative rules of behavior; however, those were only documented in private writings and did not make an impact in his contemporaries. We postulate that studies prior to the XVIII Century were very limited in their scope and cannot be considered as the basis of the developments of Musschenbroek and Euler.
