Abstract:
Abstract This paper examines one of the most notorious scandals of sixteenth-century France. In 1557, Françoise de Rohan, a lady-in-waiting to Catherine de Medici, launched a legal battle to get the duke of Nemours, Jacques de Savoie, to recognize their orally-agreed marriage contract and formally recognize the child whom he had fathered with her. Central to Rohan’s case were not only the love-letters Nemours had written to her but also the eye-witness testimonies of her servants, who had overheard their marriage vows and had witnessed their love-making. Nemours’s only defense was his word of honor as a gentleman that no marriage had taken place. This paper situates the case of Rohan vs. Nemours within a transitory period in French society as oral and literate cultures competed for precedence, and asks what happens to the concept of honor when the spoken word is no longer to be trusted.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVES/SPECIFIC AIMS: As part of a larger effort to create a longitudinal record of care for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Delaware, we assessed transitions of care from pediatric to adult care. This study examined the length of time between last pediatric contact and first contact in the adult system in order to determine characteristics associated with delayed transition to adult care. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: Patients who receive pediatric care at the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children (Nemours) are transitioned to adult care between the ages of 18 and 21. Our study population consists of all patients seen in the Nephrology unit at Nemours for CKD, hypertension (HTN), or diabetes who turned 21 years old between 2007 and 2013. Records of office visits from Nemours, Christiana Care Health System (CCHS), and Nephrology Associates, P.A. (NAPA) were transformed into the OMOP common data model and merged. Patients who had at least 1 record in the Nemours EHR of pediatric care before age 21 and had at least 1 record in the CCHS or NAPA adult EHRs were considered transitioned. To identify characteristics associated with delayed transition to adult care, we compared gender, race, ethnicity, age, comorbidities, and level of kidney function at the last pediatric visit between patients whose transition gap was less than 1 year and patients whose gap was 1 year or more. Kidney function was estimated by calculating glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Nemours estimates GFR in children using the revised Schwartz equation, which is based on serum creatinine and height. To calculate adult GFR, we used the CKD-Epi equation, which is based on serum creatinine, age, sex, and race and is widely used to derive adult GFR. As kidney function declines, GFR decreases. We used Fisher exact test to compare categorical variables and t-test to compare age and GFR. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: We found only 109 (25%) patients who had records in our adult offices out of the 440 Nemours patients in our data set. Of the 109 transitioned patients, 54 had office visits at CCHS, 37 at NAPA, and 18 at both locations. Examining the office visits of the 109 transitioned patients, 34 (31%) had an overlap in visits defined as an office visit at CCHS or NAPA before the last office visit at Nemours, and 75 (69%) did not have an overlap. The median gap between last pediatric and first adult office visit for the 75 patients without an overlap was 615 days (range 8–3495 d). Only 6 (6%) of the 109 transitioned patients had overlapping GFR measurements from pediatric to adult care, and all of the adult GFR calculations (CKD-Epi) were greater than the pediatric GFR calculations (Schwartz). The difference between child and adult GFR ranged from 8.2 to 87.1 mL/minute per 1.72 m2. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF IMPACT: During the transition from pediatric care to adult care, many young adults with CKD experience declines in health outcomes and comorbidities such as diabetes and HTN complicate self-management. Lack of overlap between pediatric and adult care office visits indicates a delay in executing this transition. In our population of 109 transitioned patients, 69% did not have an overlap in care, and 50% of those without overlap had a gap of more than 615 days (1 y, 8 mo). Our analysis suggests that young adults who are younger at last pediatric office visit are more likely to delay transitioning to adult care. Transitioning from the nurturing environment of pediatric care to adult care is a complex process and could be challenging for young adults with CKD. Transition clinics may be necessary to improve the coordination of care and help these young adults keep their physician appointments.

ABSTRACTTransitioning the care of a previously critically ill infant to home poses many challenges for the parents. Prior to the infant’s discharge, the parents undergo rigorous training to continue the care of their infants at home. Even after training, parents may feel overwhelmed by the thought of managing an emergency at home. This evidence-based practice project aims to provide parents with additional hands-on practice of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) prior to their infant’s discharge. Based on this project, a program of teaching CPR regularly is established currently in the NICU at Nemours Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children.

In this article, Professor Stabile examines the experimentation with Frederick Taylor's principles of scientific management by managers at the E. I. du Pont de Nemours Powder Company. Despite their initial interest in efficiency, those managers quickly recognized that there was a direct relationship between efficiency and safety, an issue Taylor had not considered. When it was alleged that the efficiency methods had been a factor in two explosions, the emphasis in the company shifted to a more systematic approach to promoting safety. As a consequence, the company was able to manage a full-scale expansion of its production during the First World War with little disruption resulting from safety problems.

Abstract:
A composite, three-layered membrane for membrane distillation was prepared from electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers supported by commercial polyethersulfone (PES) nanofiber based nonwoven from E.I. duPont de Nemours company (DuPont). The membranes were tested in direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) using a 5.0 M sodium chloride brine as a feed solution. The triple layer membrane combines the hydrophobicity of PVDF and the robustness of the PES. The triple layer membrane demonstrated excellent performance in DCMD (i.e., relatively high water flux compared to the commercial PVDF membrane and a complete salt rejection of the brine) with mechanical properties imparted by the PES layer. This work is the first to demonstrate the use of a commercially produced nanofiber nonwoven for membrane distillation.

Full text
Abstract:
Thermal-spraying of polymers can be traced back to the 1940s, when polyethylene (PE) was first produced by E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. Early work with flame-spraying guns was unsuccessful because the equipment, designed for spraying metals, produced a flame that was both too hot and too short to melt the PE without degradation. The technology has advanced considerably in the past 20 years. Flame-spray equipment and hardware accessories have been designed by numerous companies (PFS Thermoplastics, Alamo, Eutectic + Castolin, etc.) specifically for polymeric materials. The new equipment provides either a lower flame temperature or uses special cooling shrouds to cool the center of the flame, providing a longer residence time at a lower temperature. Many plastics can now be completely melted in-flight and allow heat-sensitive components to be coated with plastic.

E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. is one of the world’s largest chemical corporations, and its operations are of interest to business historians. This article explores the early history of the firm within the context of early republic political economy in order to show how it came to a place of prominence in the American gunpowder market by the early 1820s. The article utilizes the archival and printed records of DuPont, associated firms, government correspondence, and early War Department and trade statistics to show how the company, unlike other powder mills of that time, had access to both large reserves of foreign capitalandthe halls of power in the federal government. These resources helped DuPont become a principal supplier of gunpowder to the army, the navy, and a major exporter during the War of 1812 era.

Abstract:
In the 1960s and 1970s, the largest U.S. chemical firm, E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, established an international presence in synthetic fibers by building plants to make nylon, polyester, and acrylic in Latin America and Europe. DuPont managers also looked to the Middle East, specifically to Iran, which was fast industrializing under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. The Shah's pro-Western stance and his country's rich oil fields made Iran appealing to a petrochemical giant like DuPont, which used petroleum feed stocks to make fibers and other products. In the 1970s, DuPont partnered with the Behshahr Industrial Group, a conglomerate run by the Ledjavardi clan, one of Iran's leading families, to build a high-tech fiber facility that would help modernize the Iranian textile industry. The story of this short-lived joint venture, a victim of the Islamic Revolution, demonstrates the challenges to multinationals operating in imperial Iran, and shows how the daily experience of dealing with cultural differences often masked larger political and economic troubles.

Abstract:
Scholars have studied innovation from various perspectives, but few have considered the interaction between big business and the fashion marketplace. This study examines the efforts of E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Company to create and expand the American synthetic-fibers market after World War II. DuPont described this work as transforming the “relatively simple ‘art’ of selling fabric” into the “complicated ‘science’ of marketing.” This process involved developing in-house marketing expertise and reaching out to sources as disparate as American fabric designers, Parisian couturiers, Seventh Avenue manufacturers, southern textile giants, and mass-market retailers. To promote the “wonders” of synthetic fibers, DuPont relied on “fashion intermediaries” to determine what customers wanted and how its fibers could meet those needs. This study suggests that the mass-market success of DuPont's synthetic fibers owed as much to creative marketing, styling, and performance as it did to industrial research and organizational innovation.

Abstract Sulfometuron methyl (methyl 2-[[[[(4,6-dimethyl-2-pyrimidinyl) - amino]carbonyl]amino]sulfonyl]-benzoate), marketed under the trade name Oust Weed Killer by E. I. DuPont de Nemours and Co., was evaluated for its ability to control three herbaceous (hay-scented fern, New York fern, and short husk grass) and two woody species (striped maple and American beech) in the under-story of Allegheny hardwood stands. The herbicide was applied at four rates, 0, 2, 4, and 8 oz of product/ac, at the beginning of each month from May through November. Both ferns were nearly completely controlled at all application rates made between July 1 and October 1. Other dates of application gave less control and were rate-dependent. Short husk grass was not completely controlled at any time, but the most effective treatments were for the highest rate applied from September 1 through November 1. Striped maple and beech were not affected by any of the treatments. North. J. Appl. For. 5:261-262, December 1988.

Abstract:
Abstract Using recent knowledge regarding the roles of colipase, bile acids, Ca2+, and emulsifiers, we optimized a previously published pH-Stat method for lipase (EC 3.1.1.3) activity measurements. The recommended assay conditions are: olive oil/triolein, 100 mL/L; sodium glycocholate, 35 mmol/L; Ca2+, 8.5 mmol/L; and colipase, 6.0 mg/L. The sample volume is 0.10 mL, the reaction pH 9.0, the temperature 30 degrees C, and the concentration of titrant 15 mmol/L. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, 20 g/L, replaces acacia as emulsifier to avoid inhibition by excess Ca2+. The standard curve is linear to greater than 4566 U/L. The reference interval with olive oil as substrate is 30-235 U/L. Lipase activities with triolein substrate are 9.9% greater than with olive oil. Interference by pancreatic carboxylesterase (EC 3.1.1.1) activity is inhibited by incubating the sample with diisopropylfluorophosphate. Results correlate well with those by the optimized SingleVial method of Boehringer Mannheim Diagnostics (r = 0.997) and the immunochemical assay of Beckman Instruments, Inc. (r = 0.995). Correlation with the aca method (E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Company) is less satisfactory (r = 0.892), probably owing to lack of colipase in the latter method.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Neurobiological concepts based on state-of-the art technology have so far lacked the complexity of actual high-level neurobiological systems. Two key advances are needed to improve our understanding of such systems: in vitro 3D-neuronal cell culture and 3D MEA systems for measuring such 3D-cultures. These requirements call for smart multilayer and packaging technology. The material Green Tape TM from DuPont Nemours is chosen for the presented works, because its compatibility and those of available metallisation with cell cultures is already proven. An LTCC multilayer circuit with gold electrodes is the base of the 3D MEA. The layout of the 3D MEA is designed to fit the MEA2100-System for in vitro recording from Multi Channel Systems and enable thus a comparable data processing to established 2D MEAs Slots. The surface topography of the thick film electrodes and the surface state is investigated with laser scanning microscopy, SEM, XPS and measurements of the wetting angle of contact. The impedance of the screen printed electrodes is discussed taking these data into account. Their impedance amounts to 24 kΩ and are falls thus below the impedance of commercially available electroplated gold electrodes of 30 kΩ. First promising results have been achieved using 3D MEAs for 2D culture of human pluripotent stem cell derived neural cells.

Abstract:
The paper is concerned with disputes over sovereignty and global commerce in the 1760s and 1770s. The eighteenth-century revolution in economic science has been identified with agricultural reforms, and with the definition of national economies. The economists of the time, including Turgot, Mirabeau, Dupont de Nemours, Baudeau and Adam Smith, were also intensely interested in the merchant sovereigns of the French, English and Dutch East India companies, and in the new colonial ventures of the post-Seven Years War period. Their writings on global commerce were sometimes extraordinarily detailed (about herrings, for example, or bye-laws) and often untheoretical. Turgot was for a brief period minister of the navy and of the colonies. The older Mirabeau described the “Spaniard” as “the true Mogul of America,” and the cod of the North Atlantic as “the inexhaustible Peru of the Dutch.” But the economists’ writings on global connections were the occasion for some of their most profound reflections on the political consequences of laissez-faire, on theories of sovereignty, on the difficulties of transporting information or instructions over very large distances, and on the changing relationships between power, law and commerce. The disputes over long-distance commerce provide an interesting insight, the paper suggests, into ways of thinking which were at the same time scientific and administrative, global and provincial.

Abstract:
Thirty herbaceous peony (section Paeonia of the genus Paeonia) cultivars were divided into four groups (no fragrance, light fragrance, medium fragrance, or intense fragrance) based on their sensory evaluation scores. Using dynamic headspace sampling (DHS) and automatic thermal desorption–gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (ATD-GC/MS), 130 volatile organic components were detected in these 30 cultivars and a total of 72 compounds were identified as scent components. The main compounds were phenylethyl alcohol, β-caryophyllene, linalool, (R)-citronellol, and nerol. Selecting α-pinene as the standard, the volatile components of these cultivars were quantitatively analyzed. By combining the sensory evaluation scores and the results of quantitative analysis, we found that ‘Going Bananas’, ‘Cream Delight’, ‘Zhu Sha Pan’, ‘Qiao Ling’, ‘Duchess de Nemours’, and ‘Yang Fei Chu Yu’ displayed an intense fragrance and, thus, had relatively high commercial value for the flower fragrance industry. ‘Red Magic’, ‘Joker’, ‘Fairy Princess’, ‘Lovely Rose’, ‘Carina’, and ‘Etched Salmon’ were excluded from the hierarchical cluster of aromatic compounds and the analysis of fragrance patterns because of the low amount of fragrance they released and poor sensory evaluation results. Based on a cluster analysis, assessment of the major aromatic compounds, and the results of sensory evaluation, the remaining 24 cultivars were divided into five fragrance patterns for the first time: woody scent [cluster I (major fragrance β-caryophyllene)], fruity scent [cluster II (phenylethyl alcohol)], lily scent [cluster III (linalool)], rose scent {cluster IV [(R)-citronellol]}, and an orange blossom scent [cluster V (nerol)].

Abstract:
Nowadays, buildings sector contributes to climate change by consuming a considerable amount of energy to afford thermal comfort for occupants. Passive cooling techniques are a promising solution to increase the thermal inertia of building envelopes, and reduce temperature fluctuations. The phase change materials, known as PCM, can be efficiently employed to this purpose, because of their high energy storage density. Among the various existing solutions, the present study is dedicated to solid-liquid phase change materials. Temperature evolution (according to their defined temperature range) induces the chemical change of the material and its state. For building applications, the chemical transition can be accomplished from liquid to solid (solidification) and from solid to liquid (melting). In fact, this paper presents a comparative thermal analysis of several test rooms with and without phase change materials embedded in a composite wallboard in different climates. The used PCM consist in a flexible sheet of 5 mm thickness (Energain, manufactured by the company DuPont de Nemours). The main properties of such a commercial solution have been delivered by the manufacturer and from analyses. The room model was validated using laboratory instrumentations and measurements of a test room in four cities: Lyon; Reading and Casablanca. Results indicate that this phase change material board can absorb heat gains and also reduce the indoor air temperature fluctuations during daytime. The aim of the study is to show the benefits of this layer with phase change material and compare it in different climatic zones.
