Abstract The Nemunas River, one of the largest rivers of the Baltic region, is characterised by a generally straight valley. In the middle part of its course the Great Nemunas Loops are distinct features that occupy an area of 320 km2 near the Birštonas Resort. The Nemunas valley here is 1.5‑5 km wide and 45‑80 m deep. The loops are cut into a glaciolacustrine plain confined between glacial and deltaic relief complexes and formed during the two last phases of glaciation. The origin of the entrenched loops, as large as 6‑10 km, can not be explained in conventional terms of river meandering. The

The deposition of sediment in the inundated floodplains of rivers, particularly in their deltas, improves the water quality of the rivers themselves and of their receivers. It would be very useful if ways to increase the amount of sediment deposition could be identified. An investigation into a number of possibilities was carried out in the delta of the River Nemunas. Various factors can influence the increase or decrease of sediment deposition, e.g. the increase of water discharge flowing through the river valley, the growth of bushes on the floodplain, the building of road banks across the v

The river delta regions are usually most vulnerable to flooding due to small changes in terrain elevation and river – sea interaction. The trends of increased frequency of flooding and an increased duration of the high water events are evident in many regions. In this study, we analyse the most extreme (severe) flood events in the Nemunas Delta region of Lithuania. The study focuses on the causes of floods and their changes over 1926–2016. Analysing specific case studies and comparing them with related studies of other researchers, we present an original interpretation of the variability of fl

The continuous research on anthropogenized coastal zones determined qualitative and quantitative characteristics of aliphatic hydrocarbons in the Curonian Lagoon and the Nemunas River Delta. The concentration of aliphatic hydrocarbons varied from 9.1 to 187.6 μg g−1 d.w. The Curonian Lagoon could be classified as a slightly contaminated water basin with some moderately polluted areas, while both rivers and Lake Krokų Lanka were found to be slightly contaminated with aliphatic hydrocarbons. Due to its catchment size and its significant level of agricultural pollution, the Nemunas river basin has been identified as an agricultural hot spot in the Baltic Sea basin. On average, the total annual inorganic nitrogen runoff into the river is 26.9 × 106 kg, which corresponds to a load of 275 kg km−2 yr−1. A submerged floodplain, covering 605 km2 of the River Nemunas lowland, maintains the natural retention threshold for pollutants in the water of the main canal and the outfall at Curonian Lagoon, as well as improving farming conditions in the inundated meadows of the valley. Abstract The Nemunas River basin falls within the territories of five different countries – Belarus, Lithuania, Russia, Poland and Latvia. In general, the beginning of spring floods highly depends on rapid rise of air temperature, heavy precipitation and sudden snow melting in the analysed basin. In this paper, the conditions of formation and consequences of two catastrophic floods in 1958 and 1979 in the Nemunas River basin were studied regarding the hydrometeorological parameters (maximum snow water equivalent before the beginning of flood and precipitation amount during the flood) as well a

This study concerns the transportation of goods and raw materials through the Nemunas River to the Baltic Sea ports in the second half of the 18th century. The main goal of this paper is to analyse how two different methods of goods transportation (shipment of goods by river vessels and by timber rafts) were organized and to determine how their economic models functioned in practice. This research relies on the data of Income-Expenditure registers of timber rafting from Radziwiłł (Świerżeń Nowy) and goods transportation from Sapieha family (Ruzhany and Derechin) estates in current-day Belarus.
