Abstract:
This chapter explores the many genres of neo-Latin writing in which theology found its place. Not only theological writings from both Roman Catholic and Protestant authors were written in Latin, but also in other genres theological issues were brought to the fore in Latin, such as political narratives like Thomas More’s Utopia, religiously inspired school and academic drama, Buchanan’s Psalm Paraphrases and other religious poetry, and in letters. Foremost through correspondence, but also by means of other genres, contacts existed between the United Kingdom and the continent. In addition, the relationship between Latin and vernacular writings on theological issues is assessed during the course of this chapter. The discussion as a whole examines the distinctions made in the period between theological beliefs and religious practices and considers how Latin constituted an apt medium in which to analyse ideas and practices with clarity.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses Latin poetry of the period 1500–1700, with a particular focus on the British Latin verse of this period, as well as authors from elsewhere who had an international reputation. Since the Latin literature of the Renaissance is conventionally considered to begin in Italy in the mid-fourteenth century with Petrarch, and the Italian Latin literature of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries was strongly influential on the rest of Europe throughout the early modern period, this chapter also gives some account of key figures from that earlier period. The chapter discusses the various contexts for Latin verse composition in the period, the most significant forms and genres (including lyric, elegy, epigram, and epyllion), key British Latin authors (including Campion, Herbert, Milton, and Cowley), the relationship to English literature, modes of publication and the directions of future research.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the wide-ranging imitation and appropriation of Grattius in Europe during the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries following the rediscovery of the text in the early years of the sixteenth century. Particular attention is focused on Giovanni Darcio’s poem, Canes (1543), Girolamo Fracastoro’s poem, Alcon (attested from at least 1555), and Jacques Vanière’s version of the Cynegetica in the sixteenth and final book of his magisterial work, Praedium Rusticum (1730). The chapter demonstrates how these authors were attracted to Grattius’ poem for his focus on (animal) medicine and his celebration of the value of human skill, agility, and ingenuity.
