The muonic atoms were formed by stopping negative muons in the neon-filled target chamber of the PSI cyclotron trap. The breaking of the N=20 shell gap in neutron-rich nuclei is investigated by studying the single-particle structure of 27Ne via neutron transfer onto a 26Ne beam. The observation of low-lying negative parity states in 27Ne above the 3/2+ ground state is further evidence of the raising of the νd3/2 orbital that is seen in other neutron-rich nuclei in the N=20 region. The previously unseen 7/2− state has been identified as unbound by 331 keV and lies above the already known 3/2− level. The 22Ne(α,γ)26Mg reaction competes with the 22Ne(α,n)25Mg reaction which is the main source of neutrons for the s-process in low-mass Asymptotic Giant Branch and massive stars. Samples of pure nickel have been implanted with 500keV helium ions, at a dose of 10[17]ions/cm[2], followed by annealing in vacuo at 750°C (≈0.6T[m]) for various time periods to allow bubble nucleation and growth to occur. A transverse sectioning technique has been developed to allow TEM studies of the complete depth distribution of cavities, hence allowing the mechanisms for bubble growth at 750°C in nickel to be identified. This thesis describes two separate investigations into the ionisation of the 3P2 metastable state of neon (Ne) by strong-eld light pulses. The first is an investigation into the ionisation yield of Ne and the second experiment examines the electron momentum distribution of the ionised electrons. Adsorption isotherms can be used to determine surface area of a substrate and the heat released when adsorption occurs. Our measurements are done determining the equilibrium pressures corresponding to a given amount of gas adsorbed on a substrate at constant temperature. The adsorption studies were done on aggregates of open dahlia-like carbon nanohorns. The nanohorns were oxidized for 9 hours at 550 °C to open them up and render their interior space accessible for adsorption. We report on neon abundances derived from Spitzer high resolution spectral data of eight Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars using the forbidden line of [Ne III] 15.56 μm. Our targets include four WN stars of subtypes 4–7, and four WC stars of subtypes 4–7. We derive ion fraction abundances γ of Ne2+ for the winds of each star. The ion fraction abundance is a product of the ionization fraction Qi in stage i and the abundance by number AE of element E relative to all nuclei. Values generally consistent with solar are obtained for the WN stars, and values in excess of solar are obtained for the WC stars.

Abstract:

This thesis presents a new technique for measuring total absolute collision cross sections. Using this technique, the total absolute collision cross sections were determined for neon in the (3s)3P2 metastable state with ground state thermal atoms and molecules. A magneto-optical trap (MOT) is used in this technique which infers the cross sections via the measurement of population dynamics within the MOT to determine the collision cross section. Abstract:

Aim of this thesis is to investigate the optimum working parameters of a helium-neon laser. Partial pressure ratios, total pressures of the gases and voltage-current characteristics were studied. The analysis of the results includes the minor factors (impurity, volume, etc.) and their effects to main parameters (laser power, voltage, current). Tables, which were formed by measured optical parameters as wavelength and power, converted to graphs and from these graphs optimal working conditions for the laser are obtained.
