MARTINS, ROSANA, and ROGÉRIO BERTANI. "The non-Amazonian species of the Brazilian wandering spiders of the genus Phoneutria Perty, 1833 (Araneae: Ctenidae), with the description of a new species." Zootaxa 1526, no. 1 (2007): 1–36. http://dx.doi.org/10.11646/zootaxa.1526.1.1.

Abstract:
The five non-Amazonian species of the medically important spider genus Phoneutria Perty, 1833 are taxonomically reviewed, including the description of a new species, P. eickstedtae sp. nov. from Brazil. Phoneutria keyserlingi (F.O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1897) and P. pertyi (F.O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1897), currently listed as junior synonyms of P. nigriventer (Keyserling, 1891), are revalidated and a modern redescription of P. pertyi is presented. Phoneutria luederwaldti Mello-Leitão, 1927, also currently listed as junior synonym of P. nigriventer, is considered nomen dubium as the faded condition of the juvenile holotype does not allow an accurate species identification. The non-Amazonian Phoneutria are mainly restricted to Atlantic rainforest and forest fragments in the Cerrado in Brazil. Phoneutria nigriventer also occurs in northern Argentina and was introduced to Uruguay. A modified taxonomic key allows an identification of all eight Phoneutria species.Key-words: armed spider, banana-spider, taxonomy, Neotropical, Brazil

Garcilazo-Cruz, Uriel, and Padilla Fernando Alvarez. "Description of a novel mating plug mechanism in spiders and the description of the new species Maeota setastrobilaris (Araneae, Salticidae)." ZooKeys 509 (June 22, 2015): 1–12. https://doi.org/10.3897/zookeys.509.9711.

Abstract:
Reproduction in arthropods is an interesting area of research where intrasexual and intersexual mechanisms have evolved structures with several functions. The mating plugs usually produced by males are good examples of these structures where the main function is to obstruct the female genitalia against new sperm depositions. In spiders several types of mating plugs have been documented, the most common ones include solidified secretions, parts of the bulb or in some extraordinary cases the mutilation of the entire palpal bulb. Here, we describe the first case of modified setae, which are located on the cymbial dorsal base, used directly as a mating plug for the Order Araneae in the species Maeota setastrobilaris sp. n. In addition the taxonomic description of M. setastrobilaris sp. n. is provided and based on our findings the geographic distribution of this genus is extended to the Northern hemisphere.

Pantoja, Paulo, Marcos Drago-Bisneto, and Regiane Saturnino. "Updates on Berlandiella (Araneae: Philodromidae): a new species, description of the male of B. querencia and new diagnosis for the genus." Zoologia 37 (April 7, 2020): 1–13. https://doi.org/10.3897/zoologia.37.e37384.

Abstract:
Berlandiella Mello-Leitão, 1929 is currently composed of six Neotropical species, of which Berlandiella querencia Lise & Silva, 2011 is known only from female specimens; the other species of the genus were described based on both males and females. In this paper, we describe and illustrate Berlandiella zabele sp. nov., based on a few individuals collected in Sete Cidades National Park, Piracuruca and Brasileira, state of Piauí, Brazil. We illustrate and describe the previously unknown male of B. querencia, based on a specimen collected from Reserva Mocambo, Belém, state of Pará, Brazil. The taxa described herein have scopula in the tarsi and metatarsi, and the males have a cymbial process, characters recorded for the first time for the genus. Additionally, we present an updated diagnosis for Berlandiella.
