Abstract:
This paper analyzes the ideal practices and the dowry system in Muslim communities in Nepal. Here, the term “ideal practices” refers to a system or set of practices that include the effectiveness of human experience and behavior, including traditions, customs, and social practices prevalent in a community. Muslim communities in Nepal follow their own way of life based on Islamic ideals. Amidst the ideal practices, the dowry system is prevalent among them. However, the system, as practiced in contemporary Muslim society, has been reported as a social and economic barrier. This paper, based on a descriptive research design and a qualitative approach, answers the question of what dowry is for Muslims, how they practice it, and why they socially discard the practice. It uses both secondary and primary data. The secondary data were collected through reviews of published books on Muslims in Nepal, and the literature available in archives and e-resources. Similarly, the primary data were collected through interviews, focus group discussions, and field observations in Morang and Sunsari districts of Nepal’s Terai. This article also uses local stories to understand the prevalence of the dowry system in the Muslim community. The analysis of various stories indicates that the dowry system is prevalent in the Muslim community due to the fanaticism of the community, superstition, greed, personal intention, social imitation, and level of perception. This research concludes that efforts such as adherence to Islamic ideals against dowry, socialization, awareness, and education can have a positive effect on controlling dowry. The paper contributes to social awareness against the dowry system among Muslims and other communities in Nepal.

Abstract:
Social stratification is the division of people into various groups or strata in a community according to their cultural beliefs, traditions, or occupation. Both in Nepal and all throughout the world, it is a widely accepted practice. M. N. Srinivas introduced the idea of "Sanskritization," which refers to the lower caste adopting the social customs, practices, and behaviors of the upper caste in order to advance in social position and hierarchy. Additionally, it involves changing their surname, getting married to girls from higher social classes, using Hindu scripts and Vedas, and changing their line of work. The social barriers relating to class discrimination and distinction in society are also being broken down by globalization, westernization, and urbanization.

Abstract:
Nepal is a predominantly rural nation: Most people live in villages and make their living as subsistence farmers. The Nepalese government, assisted by international donor agencies, administers projects directed at improving the conditions of life for these rural people. Images of villages and village life accompany the promotion of development ideals. Radio Nepal has actors playing the part of villagers in didactic skits aimed at convincing rural people that they should consult doctors for their health problems or should feed oral rehydration solution to children suffering from diarrhea. Schoolbooks contain illustrations of village scenes and talk about village life as they inform children about development programs. When development policy makers plan programs, they discuss what villagers do, how they react, and what they think. Together, these images coalesce into a typical, generic village, turning all the villages of rural Nepal into the village.

AbstractBased on fieldwork with the Rana clan in Nepal, the author argues that ways of distinction differ between cultures but can be transferred and introduced cross culturally. Thus relocated, unfamiliar ways of distinction may be used as strategic tools to gain status otherwise unattainable. Taking the Ranas of Nepal as an example, the author shows with historical references that introducing foreign ways of distinction does however not come without complications. Customs have to be modified, the rules of religious obligations bent and first-rate performance is necessary to convince locals and foreigners that a new social hierarchy has been established.

Gurung women of Mustang, Nepal, and Ute women of Colorado, USA, are fascinating people and subjects. They have upheld matriarchy in the predominantly patriarchal world. Their free, symphonic life presents a model for other women. The two tribal womenfolk living in two different poles show keen relations regarding many customs and rituals as well as in displaying women power. It is an interesting and meaningful study to compare the societies of these two tribal womenfolk and trace their relationship with one another. They may have been distantly related to each other in their origin as such studies imply about them.

AbstractOne reason many traditional Lari customs celebrating life cycle events, such as births, marriages, and pilgrimages were preserved well into the 1970s is that women, particularly the older women, have been the keepers of this knowledge. They maintained the practice of these customs and passed on the knowledge to their daughters and younger members of their social networks. This paper examines Lari marriage practices in the 1970s and contrasts them with earlier customs as reported by older women. It discusses also the role of social networks in maintaining, changing, and passing on marriage customs.

Abstract:
The article focuses on identifying the needs and opportunities for improving the legal regulation of social protection of customs authorities employees in Ukraine. The paper highlights that today the legal regulation of social protection of customs employees is characterized by a number of problems, including the lack of appropriate inclusive approaches to personnel policy in the customs authorities, which causes risks for employees with disabilities, pregnant employees, etc.; formal and fragmentary delineation of certain measures of customs employees’ social protection in the Customs Code of Ukraine. Unresolved issues of the legal regulation of customs employees’ social protection create additional socio-legal risks for the level of social security of customs personnel, and demotivate the employees, which is an additional factor for the personnel crisis in the public service system. To solve these problems, the author proposes to create and approve the Conception of ensuring the standards for decent work and social security of customs officials for the period up to 2030, which will help to implement an inclusive approach to personnel policy in this government agency by means of ensuring gender equality among employees; creating a healthy psychological climate in the customs authorities; creating conditions for the integration of persons with disabilities and young able-bodied citizens without work experience into the working life by giving them the opportunity to work in the customs authorities. It is also proposed to make a number of amendments to the Customs Code of Ukraine, in particular, to improve the legal regulation of housing for customs officials, medical care and health care of customs officials and their families, including the regulation of funeral assistance for customs officials. The conclusions summarize the results of the research and emphasize the need for further analysis of the legal regulation of customs employees’ social protection in Ukraine.

Folklore reflects biological facts and social customs. Lullabies reveal that childbearing is essential for a husband and wife. If it rains when the rainy sprouting festival and the horse-drawing ceremony are held, not only the plowman of God's grace will be happy that the world has got a pleasant life. It can be seen that the folk cults which were humble originated with causal things. Folk literature refers to the civilization, culture, customs, beliefs and cults of a tribe. Folk songs, stories and proverbs cannot be considered to have originated to please others. It can be seen as an expression of people's feelings of happiness and suffering. Folk literary research has grown into a major field today. In lullabies, the mother's consciousness is abundant. Childbirth is very important in domestic life in society. The man who worshipped nature later created an appearance and worshipped the deity in the mountains, trees and water bodies. The people of the country can see that they worship the gods and their ancestors who protect the town. Folklore can see that birth, marriage and death have rituals and beliefs.

Abstract:
This study aims at assessing the relevance of social security allowance in Nepal among the beneficiaries of Kirtipur Municipality, Kathmandu district. With purposive selection of Kirtipur Municipality, a community based cross sectional study was carried out among old age allowance beneficiaries of Kirtipur Municipality. Most of the target people (86.1% male and 85.6% female) of social security allowance have been primarily using allowance money for basic personal needs for buying food/clothes/vegetables and though the government's initiatives have had the direct bearing on the reduction of the household economic poverty and vulnerability of the beneficiaries, it seems insufficient enough to maintain the target people’s life as majority of them (80.4%) reported the inadequacy of the allowance distributed. This was evidenced by chi-square test also. The study revealed that there is needed to make the institutional efforts within the legal framework to make members of the families responsible for the support of senior citizens in their ripe old age. The government needs to design and implement livelihoods programs for physically capable senior citizens living below poverty line which would also use their skill and knowledge and contribute to reduce household poverty.

Dynamic changes taking place in Ukrainian society today, in particular, hostilities in Ukraine, determine the need for a deep and unified understanding of the implementation of customs policy in the context of modern challenges, which necessitates further research in this field. Presentation of the main material of the study. The system of customs authorities is designed to implement customs policy in the country on the basis of the principles of territorial organization, foreign economic activity and international cooperation defined in the Constitution. The main legislative act regulating legal relations in the country and, in particular, in the field of customs policy, is the Constitution of Ukraine. A brief overview of the peculiarities of functioning of the customs authorities of developed countries shows their universality and management of tasks far beyond the scope of powers that is inherent in the Ukrainian customs authorities. In other words, customs authorities of Ukraine are characterized by narrow specialization and fulfillment of only those responsibilities that directly belong to the field of customs policy of the state. Foreign experience makes it possible to understand, which direction the Ukrainian state is moving in view of the unification of domestic customs policy. Thus, having chosen the European integration course, Ukraine has embarked on the path of expanding foreign economic ties and deepening cooperation with European countries. Accordingly, the customs policy of Ukraine, based on the legislative and regulatory framework built on European standards and which is designed to regulate legal relations arising between entities when crossing the customs border, gains particular importance. Customs legislation is very dynamic and constantly unified, as the state needs constant integration with the countries of the European Union and deepening relations with them within free economic zones. In particular, emphasis should be placed on Ukraine’s accession to the World Trade Organization. This fact, as well as the European integration aspirations of Ukraine, limit the sovereignty of Ukrainian legislation in the field of customs policy. After all, the World Trade Organization proclaims a course to reducing barriers in trade and exchange of goods and services between the member states, as well as to elimination of non– tariff methods of regulating international economic relations, and the constant reduction of import tariffs. Thus, Ukraine must adjust its legislative and regulatory framework in the field of customs policy to the standards and requirements of the World Trade Organization and the European Union. The following main areas of improvement of customs policy were identified: implementation of international standards and requirements for increasing the level of protection of national interests of the state; simplification of customs procedures to reduce the number of abuse in this area; increasing the efficiency of detection and counteraction to negative phenomena in the field of foreign trade; improving the implementation of foreign economic activities and creating optimal conditions for the participants. Conclusions. Thus, the customs policy in Ukraine has had sufficient regulatory and legislative support in recent decades. At the same time, given Ukraine’s desire to integrate into the European environment, cooperation with the World Trade Organization and other international organizations, it is necessary to increase attention to the regulatory framework of customs relations. Priority of international treaties over domestic Ukrainian legislation indicates the need to unify the legislation of Ukraine and bring it in line with international norms and standards.

Abstract:
Despite the enormous diversity of research within the anthropological tradition, a common unifying theme has been the “reach into otherness” (Burridge 1973:6), the venture of discovering humanity through the exploration of other cultures. From the inception of anthropology as a distinct domain of knowledge, this ethnographic curiosity has been staged within a comparative frame of reference (Hymes 1974). Early inquiries into different customs and social forms were based on the writings of European travelers, whose observations about people in distant lands provided the narrative material for constructing a plausible vision of their own world. Initially, insights into the workings of society remained implicit, hidden beneath the projected images of “otherness.” By the second half of the eighteenth century, these encounters with the unfamiliar through travel and commerce had begun to generate a conscious desire for societal self-knowledge among Europeans. The haphazard collection of ethnographic information was gradually transformed into a reflective methodology.

The gradual or rapid deterioration of cultural heritage buildings can be a source of the loss of heritage assets over time. Cultural heritage encompasses tangible and intangible aspects of a society’s heritage, including historical buildings, archaeological sites, artworks, artifacts, traditions, customs, and ethnic customs. This research paper investigated the causes and effects of the deterioration of the heritage system from the Madhyapur Thimi in Nepal. A case study of tangible heritage (Thimi settlement) and intangible heritage (Bisket Jatra—community celebrations—and Ritual Guthi—a local group formed to conduct cultural activities) helped to achieve the objectives of this study. The existing unique cultures from the Madhyapur Thimi, including the built culture, Guthi, Bisket Jatra, and Ritual Guthi area support the sustainable development of heritage structures to some extent. The cultural heritage is now at risk due to institutional inadequacies, economic and social issues, resource depletion, and natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes. Policy should be modified, and heritage should be conserved and maintained well for future generations to own it as an identity and pride of the Thimi community.

No other compound in Tibetan medical pharmacology seems to be as fascinating, controversial, and enigmatic astsotel(btso thal, lit. ‘cooked ash’), the processed mercury sulphide ash that provides the base material of many of the popular Tibetan ‘precious pills’ (rin chen ril bu). The compound contains—apart from numerous herbs and other ingredients—eight metals and eight rock components.Tsotelpractices, which can be traced back to the thirteenth century in Tibet, are considered the pinnacle of Tibetan pharmacology. The commercial value oftsotelgives it a strong economic and social life of its own. This paper analyses the social life oftsotelfrom an anthropological perspective and sketches key aspects oftsotel’s biography, which in one way or the other are linked to medical, political, and religious perceptions of mercury:tsotelevents with their political and institutional agendas; the value oftsotelas a medical, religious, and political commodity; safety and toxicity debates; andtsotel’s religious and political efficacy. I argue that the social life oftsotelis increasingly linked to perceptions of toxicity and safety because of its chief ingredient, mercury, being contested in a globalised arena of tightened international regulations as well as the recent attention given to heavy metal toxicity issues in Asian medicines. Also, several fundamental misconceptions of the substance of mercury itself, its processed form of mercury sulphide, and of the contamination of herbal ingredients with heavy metals will be highlighted. Examples are based on ethnographic fieldwork with Tibetan medical practitioners and pharmacologists in India and Nepal.

Abstract:
Mediatization is a process of media-influence on society. In this process, people are exposed to types of media and as a result culture, politics, business, sport, education, and other parts of a society undergo change. We can see the massive utilization of social media apps by people in the present globalized context, and Nepal is also following the similar trend. Increasing use of social media apps by people of all walks of life has brought a drastic change in the way of life of Nepali people. The audio-visual effect of media is more remarkable since the use of audio-visual instruments can be clearly visualized during the feasts, rituals and celebration of festivals. People celebrate culture because culture is always important to them, but the diffusion of culture in the present has become instant caused by media. Media of course is a catalyst of macro level change and political transformation, but in case of Nepal it has become a major part of cultural transformation. The problem therefore lies on whether mediatization as a process contributes in general to positive changes or jeopardizes cultural practices in particular. It is because the contents of television, radio, newspaper, movie, music-video, online portal, meeting, school, university, social organization, civil society, etc., are less relevant to public, mediatization has become the agent to mystify culture. This paper recommends the proper utilization of media so as to enrich Nepali culture.

Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to show the state of modern exchange relations in the wedding ceremonies of the peoples of Dagestan and to trace the variants of their transformation at different stages of the wedding. Ceremonies of wedding gift exchange of Dagestanis today have similar features with traditional customs and ceremonies. However, over time, under the influence of ethno-cultural and other processes, modern exchange relations within wedding customs have undergone certain transformations, adapting to the modern way of life of the people. It is known that exchange relations are the most archaic tradition of social life of any nation, originating in ancient times. It is believed that the traditions of gift exchange were created to preserve existing or create new kinship and social relations within or between communities. However, in recent years, its main functions are increasingly becoming a thirst for profit, i.e., gift exchange acquires utilitarian functions. Many of the symbolic wedding gifts of the past have now been replaced by money, and their value is increasing every year. Since the post-Soviet period, the expressed interest and return of the peoples of Dagestan to their traditional customs and rituals (including wedding) can be traced. However, the moral and ethical side of these customs remained in the past. To solve these problems and facilitate the wedding (reduce costs) and all its stages, it is necessary to introduce into modern rites of wedding gift exchange reasonable ethical standards to regulate these rituals. It is necessary to rethink the current traditional customs of gift exchange, bringing material and moral damage to the family, to choose and preserve the most important of them, corresponding to the modern way of life of Dagestanis, discarding unnecessary and irrelevant rituals.

The practice of widow burning ‘Sati Pratha’ was prevalent in Nepal from the ancient period up to its abolishment during the Rana regime by Prime Minister Chandra Shamsher. The practice was at its apex during the medieval period in Nepal when not only the widow but in some cases mother, slave girls, and even boys were immolated most probably against their wish. This was because most of the religious texts praised it and took it as one of the glorious acts one can perform to sanctify themselves and their lineage. Such religious conviction encouraged social complications and in some cases, such acts were performed to gain political advancements also. This paper tends to analyze the different factors which encouraged/forced innocent women to give up their life and how the cruel act of burning a person gained such popularity among the people. Along with its history to the actions taken in phase-wise for its abolishment in case of Nepal are discussed.

Pancasila as the nation's view of life is a form of crystallization of cultural values, social behavior of the people, customs that serve as guidelines in the life of the nation and state. Today, Indonesia faces various challenges in the digital era. The digital era is the point of progress of human civilization, especially in the development of Science and Technology (IPTEK), one of which is marked by the emergence of the existence of social media. Social media certainly makes it easy for its users, through social media we can share information and communicate without being limited by space and time. However, like the two sides of a coin, we cannot deny that social media also has a negative influence, especially on millennials. If we look at the existing reality, of course we realize that this social media causes norms, values, manners, customs which are truly the identity of the Indonesian nation which gradually fade away. Thus, in facing the current rapid flow of digitalization, it is necessary to have Pancasila resilience as a form of maintaining Pancasila values so that they live on in the soul of the Indonesian nation.

Abstract:
As an important junction on the ancient Silk Road in China, Dunhuang's historical remains reflect the social order, social life, and social values of that time. To study the funeral customs and concepts in ancient Dunhuang, this paper analyzed the funeral customs by examining Dunhuang murals and a substantial amount of literature searching related essays online. In particular, the text compares and relates the funeral practices of ethnic minorities and the Han Chinese. It is found that the evolution of funeral customs in Dunhuang reflects the characteristics of the concept of all-in-one pluralism, representing a unified approach to diversity and inclusion. In this region of Dunhuang, the funeral customs observed include not only those derived from Taoism and Confucianism, which were the dominant religious traditions among the Han Chinese, but also those derived from Zoroastrianism, which was practiced by the ethnic minorities, as well as from exotic forms of Buddhism. This means that different regions and religions constantly fused and were absorbed into one another in Dunhuang, eventually becoming part of the excellent traditional Chinese culture. This demonstrates that different cultures can exist within a given practice, not only without mutual exclusion but also by displaying different characteristics.

Abstract:
The paper analyses the social character in the politics of Nepali communists’ pastries particularly of the Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist and Leninist) and the Communist party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) by applying marxist perspective. It brings into light the essential causes and consequences of the rise and fall of communist movement in Nepal. The paper argues that every communist party has adopted appropriate social policies in their inception, but in course of their development, being deviated from their early stage became fascinated towards consumerist capitalist culture in their practical life. There are various reasons for this deviation. First, communist parties have failed to analyse the character of Nepali society properly as they have changed their analyses very often. Second, the leaders have been found double faced: they say one thing but do another as they are inherently guided by feudal psychology, comprador capitalist mentality and behaviour. Third, they have not been able to bring about socio-economic change as they have been engaged in the imbroglio of parliamentary politics. While trying to justify these issues, this paper incorporates the evidences from political documents and leaders’ statements. The paper is presented inductively and choice of methodology is qualitative.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the phenomenon of regional cinema in Russia. It analyzes the main theoretical and methodological approaches in the study of film art, as well as interpretations of the concepts of “images”, “meanings” and “constructs” contained in contemporary regional films. It is noted that the positioning of the region in the sociocultural space is conditioned by the emergence of such a form of representation as cinema. It is shown that regional cinema represents a variety of local value constructs that are capable of self-reflection and active transformation of social reality. Symbolic constructs displayed in films can be perceived as unifying (images of historical events and figures, hard provincial life in the regions) and distinctive (customs, myths, rituals, church). The analysis of film content showed that modern regional cinema combines cultural and ethnic diversity, i.e. preservation of ethnic traditions and customs, Soviet values such as mutual aid and responsibility, and local specifics – the role of family, relationships and love for the small homeland.

Abstract:
Many traditional societies still lack a strong social security systems for the elderly people. They generally view elderly people living with family as dependent on the family structure for social support, health and wellbeing. However, widows lack privileges and protection even when they live in traditional joint families, with at least one child and grandchildren. In reality, their resilience plays a significant role in their health and wellbeing as they age. To identify research gap about resilience among elderly widows, this study assessed the situation of 25 elderly widows aged 65 and above residing with their families in Kathmandu district , Nepal and identified key factors bringing about resilience in their day-to-day life. The resilience index comprised of four dimensions: psychological, physical health and fitness, food and nutrition and life support. The findings indicate that financial independence and education are two critical factors that best support resilience in elderly widows. This has far-reaching impacts on vulnerable groups like elderly people, especially elderly widows. The resilience index will be helpful for policy makers, stakeholders and other researchers to study the wellbeing and resilience among older widows.

Abstract:
In the far-western region of Nepal, particularly, in Doti, Baitadi and Dadeldhura, deuki pratha has been practiced as a long established tradition. However, Deuki pratha is considered illegal in Nepal. Deukis are offered to different deities by parents or others (wealthier couples). The reason behind deuki pratha rests on the belief that one’s family gets protection and good favour from the gods. Once offered as Deuki, the girl is not allowed to get married and is devoid of the family support. The major duty of Deuki is to serve the goddess and temple such as cleaning and looking after the temple. The study was conducted in Melauli Municipality of Baitadi district in Sudurpaschim province. This paper aims to highlight the social issues due to deuki in the study area. The study aimed to understand the socio-cultural beliefs of deuki tradition in the changing social and cultural contexts from the gender perspective and development. The study was based primarily on qualitative methods. The study revealed that deuki tradition is still practiced, though it is reported to be declined in the recent years. Unlike in the past, with the growing awareness by the joint efforts of government and non-government organizations' agencies, practice of Deuki has declined to a great extent but not abolished yet. There was mixed reaction regarding beliefs upon Deuki tradition among the locals. The study found that Deuki women who had been offered to the deity was unknowingly been isolated, when still as a girl and abused from the society as these came at the cost of personal and social life of women. With the growing awareness, and changing society, the locals and the followers of deuki pratha seem to welcome the changes and attitudes towards deuki pratha. However, the social and economic life styles of deukis are at stake. Though, some deukis own some private property, due to the lack of emotional and social support are bound to live forbidden and isolated life. Unlike, in the past, where deukis received reverence and importance, the perception towards deukis has worsened in the study area often belittled as prostitution and the disgrace to the society.

Socio-normative life of Ukrainians of the 20th – the beginning of the 21th centuries, that covers aspects of management, self-organization and formation of public institutions, mutual assistance and leisure, regulation of behavior, is a poorly studied topic in ethnological science. During the establishment of the Soviet system, which completely changed the traditional way of life of Ukrainian peasants, a major transformation of the customs of public life took place. Following Ukraine’s independence, modern social normative practices were developing according to the requirements of the new legislation. As the result, nowadays there is a considerable urgency to investigate the specifics and changes that have taken place in public life in the Ukrainian villages in the second half of the 20th – early 21th centuries. In the new socio-economic and national-religious contexts, despite the changes in industrial relations and socio-professional composition of the rural population, the system of traditional social life in Ukraine was able to maintain positive and well-considered skills of social coexistence, forms of daily and festive leisure, as well as the moral and ethical standards of people’s coexistence. The article on the materials of expeditions to Chernivtsi, Ternopil, Zakarpattya, Odessa, Kharkiv regions analyzes the preservation and peculiarities of transformation of traditional social forms of leisure and communication of peasants during the second half of the 20th – early 21th centuries. The types and places of daily (customs of «calling for freshness», «going for liver», mutual assistance, evening meetings) and festive (during the temple holiday, mutual guests, youth entertainment, celebration of the village holiday) leisure of the village community are revealed. Most of the information was recorded on evening meetings. They are a socio-everyday entity that organically combines entertainment and work elements. Usually, the main guideline for their conducting was hand work (spinning, embroidery, sewing), accompanied by songs and entertainment. The made records give a certain idea of the contemporary collective customs and traditions of Ukrainians in rural areas, especially of interpersonal relations in the Ukrainian peasant environment of today. The common belief among the respondents is that some changes in people’s behavior are manifested by a decrease in interest in communication than before (reciprocal guest-houses between the villagers have become a rarity – they only gather on holidays). Today, the customs of collective mutual assistance (in case of distress or distress in one of the villagers) are still preserved among the rural population.
