Abstract:
AbstractIn this prospective study of upper middle class youth, we document frequency of alcohol and drug use, as well as diagnoses of abuse and dependence, during early adulthood. Two cohorts were assessed as high school seniors and then annually across 4 college years (New England Study of Suburban Youth younger cohort [NESSY-Y]), and across ages 23–27 (NESSY older cohort [NESSY-O]; ns = 152 and 183 at final assessments, respectively). Across gender and annual assessments, results showed substantial elevations, relative to norms, for frequency of drunkenness and using marijuana, stimulants, and cocaine. Of more concern were psychiatric diagnoses of alcohol/drug dependence: among women and men, respectively, lifetime rates ranged between 19%–24% and 23%–40% among NESSY-Os at age 26; and 11%–16% and 19%–27% among NESSY-Ys at 22. Relative to norms, these rates among NESSY-O women and men were three and two times as high, respectively, and among NESSY-Y, close to one among women but twice as high among men. Findings also showed the protective power of parents’ containment (anticipated stringency of repercussions for substance use) at age 18; this was inversely associated with frequency of drunkenness and marijuana and stimulant use in adulthood. Results emphasize the need to take seriously the elevated rates of substance documented among adolescents in affluent American school communities.

Abstract:
Enzymes of the membrane-bound O-acyltransferase (MBOAT) family add fatty acyl chains to a diverse range of protein and lipid substrates. A chromosomal translocation disrupting human MBOAT1 results in a novel syndrome characterized by male sterility and brachydactyly. We have found that the Drosophila homologues of MBOAT1, Oysgedart (Oys), Nessy (Nes), and Farjavit (Frj), are lysophospholipid acyltransferases. When expressed in yeast, these MBOATs esterify specific lysophospholipids preferentially with unsaturated fatty acids. Generating null mutations for each gene allowed us to identify redundant functions for Oys and Nes in two distinct aspects of Drosophila germ cell development. Embryos lacking both oys and nes show defects in the ability of germ cells to migrate into the mesoderm, a process guided by lipid signals. In addition, oys nes double mutant adult males are sterile due to specific defects in spermatid individualization. oys nes mutant testes, as well as single, double, and triple mutant whole adult animals, show an increase in the saturated fatty acid content of several phospholipid species. Our findings suggest that lysophospholipid acyltransferase activity is essential for germline development and could provide a mechanistic explanation for the etiology of the human MBOAT1 mutation.

Abstract:
Context. Solar spectral irradiance (SSI) variability is one of the key inputs to models of the Earth’s climate. Understanding solar irradiance fluctuations also helps to place the Sun among other stars in terms of their brightness variability patterns and to set detectability limits for terrestrial exoplanets. Aims. One of the most successful and widely used models of solar irradiance variability is Spectral And Total Irradiance REconstruction model (SATIRE-S). It uses spectra of the magnetic features and surrounding quiet Sun that are computed with the ATLAS9 spectral synthesis code under the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). SATIRE-S has been at the forefront of solar variability modelling, but due to the limitations of the LTE approximation its output SSI has to be empirically corrected below 300 nm, which reduces the physical consistency of its results. This shortcoming is addressed in the present paper. Methods. We replaced the ATLAS9 spectra of all atmospheric components in SATIRE-S with spectra that were calculated using the Non-LTE Spectral SYnthesis (NESSY) code. To compute the spectrum of the quiet Sun and faculae, we used the temperature and density stratification models of the FAL set. Results. We computed non-LTE contrasts of spots and faculae and combined them with the corresponding fractional disc coverages, or filling factors, to calculate the total and spectral irradiance variability during solar cycle 24. The filling factors have been derived from solar full-disc magnetograms and continuum images recorded by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager on Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO/HMI). Conclusions. The non-LTE contrasts yield total and spectral solar irradiance variations that are in good agreement with empirically corrected LTE irradiance calculations. This shows that the empirical correction applied to the SATIRE-S total and spectral solar irradiance is consistent with results from non-LTE computations.

Abstract:
Context. There is no consensus on the amplitude of historical solar forcing. The estimated magnitude of the total solar irradiance (TSI) difference between the Maunder minimum and the present time ranges from 0.1 to 6 W m−2 making the simulation of the past and future climate uncertain. One reason for this disagreement is the applied evolution of the quiet Sun brightness in solar irradiance reconstruction models. This work addresses the role of the quiet Sun model choice and updated solar magnetic activity proxies on the solar forcing reconstruction. Aims. We aim to establish a plausible range for the solar irradiance variability on decadal to millennial timescales. Methods. The spectral solar irradiance (SSI) is calculated as a weighted sum of the contributions from sunspot umbra, sunspot penumbra, faculae, and quiet Sun, which are pre-calculated with the NLTE Spectral SYnthesis code (NESSY). We introduce activity belts of the contributions from sunspots and faculae and a new structure model for the quietest state of the Sun. We assume that the brightness of the quiet Sun varies in time proportionally to the secular (22-yr smoothed) variation of the solar modulation potential. Results. A new reconstruction of the TSI and SSI covering the period 6000 BCE - 2015 CE is presented. The model simulates solar irradiance variability during the satellite era well. The TSI change between the Maunder and recent minima ranges between 3.7 and 4.5 W m−2 depending on the applied solar modulation potential. The implementation of a new quietest Sun model reduces, by approximately a factor of two, the relative solar forcing compared to the largest previous estimation, while the application of an updated solar modulation potential increases the forcing difference between the Maunder minimum and the present by 25–40%.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
A place for no place is a practice based research project that investigates the notion of in-between space. The focus of this project is to consider the nature of binary oppositions and the thresholds between, through the designing of memorial space. The key issue of this project is aimed at investigation of the nature of thresholds of dualism, contrasting dualities and binary oppositions. With help of this project, I attempt to discuss a design methodology by balancing the binarization in natural environment in terms of applying their principles to creating the space, meanwhile, making the space from outside Visually the practical part of the exegesis will grow from process of spatial analysis and detailing by consulting with the key spatial binary oppositions of the site specific projects – Flat Alleyway and Wen-chuan Earthquake Memorial Park. Spatial arrangement and function, along with their codified details will be domesticated with concerns of the special character of the site and the consideration of scale, function, body movement, interior and exterior decoration aspects of the space. The result will be a cohesive range that represents new spaces by the meaning of In-Between-Ness. Heuristic and practical projects are my main methodological approaches. My work does not seek to fix a solution by the notion of in-between, but open up area of ongoing discovery. The practical spatial design projects are regarded as a process of meditation for a self-development, which allows me to reconsider, renegotiate, reflect and renew my work throughout the practical process. In this way, hidden spatial codes can be brought out to the surface.

Abstract:
Large scale dedicated cultivation of bioenergy on fertile arable land or the large scale deployment of biomass from standing forest, with their impact on nutrient cycles, biodiversity and land occupation (the three planet boundaries which are already overtaken beside climate change) is difficult to reconcile with a safe operating space for humanity. Renewable energy sources allowing the decoupling of energy systems from GHG emission requiring a minimal land use, and therefore limited impacts on nutrient cycles and biodiversity, are to be pursued. Residual biomass such as forest harvest residues, biomass cultivated in marginal/abandoned land with low nutrients input, and biowaste from other sectors of the economy may provide a temporary source of energy for those sectors more difficult to decouple from fossil fuels, towards a society less dependent on combustion technologies.

Abstract:
The overarching aim of this thesis was to describe how family members experienced everyday life with life-threatening illness close to death, with focus on self-image and identity. The thesis comprises four papers, each with a specific aim to illuminate various aspects of the phenomenon under study. The study population consisted of 29 participants; ten family caregivers and five families, including five patients with life threatening illness and their family members. Data were based on retrospective single interviews (paper I), prospective individual, couple and group interviews with the families over six to eighteen month (papers II-III). Interpretive description approach (papers I, II, IV), narrative method (paper III) and secondary analysis (paper IV) were used to analyze data. The findings show how living close to death influences everyday life at home, at several levels (papers I-IV). From the perspective of the dying person, narrations of daily situations was described by four themes related to identity and everyday life; inside and outside of me, searching for togetherness, my place in space and my death and my time. The changing body, pain, fatigue, decreased physical capacity and changed appearance, appeared to influence the dying person’s need for altered knowledge and community, and as a result the patterns of interaction within the families changed. The strive for knowledge and community took place at home, an arena for identity work and the conscious search for meaning, knowledge and community; it was limited by time and inevitable death (paper III). For the family member, life close to death can mean sharing life with a changing person in a changing relationship (paper II). It may mean that everyday life needs to be modified in order for it to work (papers I-IV). New patterns of dependence and an asymmetrical relationship affect all involved (papers III-IV). Daily life close to death is about finding the space to promote the individual self-image, me-ness, at the same time as finding new ways of being a family; we-ness (paper II). Regardless of being the ill person or not, the family members we interviewed had to face impending death, which challenged earlier ways of living together (papers I-IV). From the perspective of the relatives, the everyday life of caring for the dying family member was characterized by challenged ideals, stretched limits and interdependency (paper I). Situations that challenged the caregivers’ self-image were connected to intimacy, decreasing personal space and experiences such as “forbidden thoughts”. The findings suggest that the bodily changes were of importance for the self-image, and that the former approach to the own body was important in the process of experiencing the body. The person living close to death was in transition to something new; being dead in the near future. One way of handling the struggles of everyday life was to seek togetherness, strive to find other persons with similar experiences while sharing thoughts and feelings. Togetherness was sought within the family, in the health care system and on the internet; a sense of togetherness was also sought with those who had already died. The other family members were also in transition as the future meant living on without the ill family member and changing their status to for example being a widow or being motherless. Identity work close to death denotes creating an access ramp into something new; a transition into the unknown. From a clinical perspective, this study emphasizes the significance of creating a climate that allows caregivers to express thoughts and feelings.

Abstract:
My work seeks to simulate the impermanence of memory, through the creation of structures and images that translate the mind’s formless but living past into physical material and sensation. The need to search for the missing six years of my childhood memories in Thailand has been the driving force behind the works, along with the lingering emotions of emptiness and unfulfillment. I create multimedia installations with materials, such as plaster, pvc panels, acrylic, polycrylic and dura-lar, to structurally realize a subject as intangible and elusive as memory. Issues of duality, identity, impermanence and memory are underlying themes for my thesis investigation. Dreamfall is a simulated, dream-like landscape where the pervading sense of solitude exists throughout the sparsity and whiteness of the installation. It is a place for contemplation and silence, a landscape of the past relived.

Rui, Taniele, and Mauricio Fiore, eds. Working Paper Series: Comunidades Terapêuticas no Brasil. Drugs, Security and Democracy Program, Social Science Research Council, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.35650/ssrc.2082.d.2021.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
[Extract from Executive Summary] Ocean Literacy (OL), or Ocean Citizenship, is the basis of a movement to sway positive, lasting change in communities that will benefit the sea, coast and climate. An ocean literate person is understanding of the ocean’s influence on their own lives, as well as the way that their behaviours influence the ocean and is knowledgeable concerning ocean threats. A degree of informed-ness (or ‘literacy’) is thought to inspire effective communication and allow for impactful decision-making regarding personal lifestyle and behaviours, which are subsequently beneficial to the marine and coastal environment. Not only that, a collective OL mindset may be translated into policy, informing marine spatial planning authorities of people’s expectations regarding their marine and coastal spaces.

Lafuente, Mariano, Rafael Leite, Miguel Porrúa, and Pablo Valenti. Inter-American Development Bank, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003009.
