Abstract:
This licentiate thesis focuses on how to design a robust and flexible environment for net-based learning. The environment is required to be scalable for large groups, robust over lossy networks, flexible to meet different learning scenarios, and support interactivity. The mStar environment presented in this thesis has been developed to meet these requirements. The environment is scalable through the use of IP multicast and a server-less design. Robustness is achieved by separating traffic by loss tolerance, where traffic that accept no loss uses a reliable multicast protocol and traffic that can accept some loss uses repair techniques. To enhance robustness even further, network resource management is suggested. Everything from small group meetings to large lectures is supported, which together with the possibility to use the tools asynchronously gives the flexibility needed. The tools in the environment are fully symmetric, which allows everyone equal access and thus supports full interactivity. Students using the mStar environment is no longer bound by physical distance, since they can easily take part of lectures, seminars and group discussions electronically. They can also be connected via not multicast enabled low bandwidth networks, since they can tunnel concentrated traffic to thir local hosts. The students are also less bound by time, as they can use the mMOD system to access recorded sessions or the WWW to access course information.

Abstract:
Energy is a key resource in Networked Control Systems, in particular in applications concerning wireless networks. This thesis investigates how to save energy in wireless sensor nodes with control and communication co-Design. This thesis reviews existing techniques and approaches that are used to save energy from a communication and a control point of view. This review is organized according to the layered communication architecture covering from bottom to top the Physical, Data Link, Network, and Application layers. Then, from the conclusion that the radio chip is an important energy consumer, a joint radio-Mode management and feedback law policy is derived. The radio-Mode management exploits the capabilities of the radio chip to switch to low consuming radio-Modes to save energy, and to adapt the transmission power to the channel conditions. This results in an event-Based control scheme where the system runs open loop at certain time. A natural trade-Off appears between energy savings and control performance. The joint policy is derived in the framework of Optimal Control with the use of Dynamic Programming. This thesis solves the optimal problem in both infinite and finite horizon cases. Stability of the closed loop system is investigated with Input-To-State Stability framework. The main conclusion of this thesis, also shown in simulation, is that cross-Layer design in Networked Control System is essential to save energy in the wireless nodes

Patriksson, Andreas. "Net Neutrality - Do We Care? : A study regarding Swedish consumers' point-of-view upon Net Neutrality."

Full text
Abstract:
Net Neutrality implicates that all data being transmitted online is treated equal by Internet Service Providers. In 2016, the public debate regarding Net Neutrality in Sweden started growing as two major Mobile Network Operators were investigated by the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority for violation of European Union Net Neutrality regulations. Several studies have been conducted regarding Net Neutrality, most of them written in a legal, financial or technological perspective. This study takes another direction, aimed at understanding the consumer’s point of view regarding Net Neutrality. This study investigates whether or not consumers are aware of the subject and if so, how they value it. To measure this, an online survey was constructed, containing a total of 12 questions and statements. 77 people participated in the survey and out of these, 10 people participated in qualitative follow-up interviews. The interviews were semi-structured and individually designed according to each participant’s answers in the survey. This was done in order to gain a deeper understanding of the consumer’s reasoning while answering the survey. The results show that consumers lack knowledge regarding Net Neutrality. A major part of the consumers had not heard of the term or did not know the meaning of it, making it hard to determine whether or not the consumers value NN. However, when given a more concrete example of the implications of Internet Traffic Management from ISPs, the participants had a better understanding of what kind of implications NN could have on their Internet usage. They valued the implications of Net Neutrality, even though they did not know the theory of the term itself. The study also revealed that consumers have a big confidence in National Regulatory Authorities when it comes to looking after the openness of the Internet. Therefore, it is likely that National Regulatory Authorities must inform and educate consumers in the matter of Net Neutrality for them to value it and see its long-term implications.

Abstract:
The thesis follows a path between the theories of collective action and digital communications to develop an analysis of the meanings of mobilization in reticular contexts or net-activism. Based on the presented theories we will try to arrange a line of interpretation that makes those two fields converge to the understanding of the meaning of net-activism so that, afterwards, we can achieve two purposes: first, present a map of the main net-activism\'s actions in Brazil and around the world. Then, contribute to the development of a theory that beholds the different approaches of mobilizations net-activists to understand their meaning and their relation to the conventional approaches of political action.

Ph.D.
This document presents a dissertation research project that involved studying: (1) faculty perceptions and student media creation competencies, (2) faculty and student perceptions of the extent to which media creation competencies are addressed within higher education, and (3) faculty and student perceptions of the importance of addressing media creation competencies within higher education. While the perception exists that today's college students are digital natives, comfortable with all forms of new media and digital technology, previous research suggests that there may be limits to the media savvy of today's college students. This study considers the extent to which students possess competencies related to one dimension of media literacy, namely, media creation. Additionally, this study considers similarities and differences that exist between faculty perceptions and student competencies and perceptions. By using faculty interviews (N=16) and a student questionnaire (N=409), data were gathered at a four-year university in Pennsylvania. Data suggest that students infrequently engage in media creation activities and perceive that they learn very little about media creation in college classes, yet feel that it is important to learn about media creation. Similarly, faculty members perceive that students rarely engage in media creation activities and lack media creation competencies. Further, faculty members perceive that they rarely include course content related to media creation in their classes, yet feel that it is important for college students to learn about media creation. Accordingly, this research suggests that, despite the perception that today's college students are digital natives, individuals of this generation typically lack the media creation competencies that are an important dimension of overall media literacy. Additionally, data suggest that, despite the perception that students should be learning about media creation, they currently rarely learn about this aspect of media literacy at the college level.

This research was motivated by the contradiction between the technologic resources that is offered to teachers of public state schools for elementary education and the pedagogic development of teachers that is necessary to support their use of technology. The theoretical references try to explore and understand some main concepts on the current researches about Literacy and Technology , and about the inclusion of training about the use of technology in teaching training programs. In order to develop this work, a qualitative approach was used and characterized by an action research in which a course was developed. The course is named Net Leitura e Net Escrita nas séries iniciais do Ensino Fundamental , and was offered for teachers who teach in the first years of school from Diretoria de Ensino de Mogi das Cruzes, according to the authorization of Coordenadoria de Estudos e Normas Pedagógicas (CENP). Five teachers who took part in the course were chosen as research subjects. The objective was to find out the possibilities and challenges for the integration of the Internet to reading and writing practices in the classroom by the teachers. It was also observed which changes on the teaching practice were favoured during the training course. The interpretation and analysis of the results show that the possibilities are related to: development of Didactic Projects; search for information and production of knowledge; development of situations which favour the learning and the contribution on literacy processes. The challenges for the teachers were: inadequacy of the structure conditions and Internet access to the SAI in the schools, and the time which interferes negatively on the development of the activities which had been suggested. The initial hypothesis was confirmed, as changes were observed in the pedagogic practices of the teachers. For example, the teachers were more open to learning; they were reflecting more while planning; they were using the ITCs in their pedagogic practices. It was also observed the development of projects based on researches, attention to the students‟ different needs, sharing of experiences and development of active social individuals. Therefore, the teachers which have a critical role concerning the curriculum contribute to the literacy of children and their path towards freedom

Zhao, Xiaogeng. "A comparative analysis of Java and .NET mobile development environments for supporting mobile services." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1003064.

Full text
Abstract:
With the rapid development of wireless technologies, traditional mobile devices, such as pagers and cellular phones, have evolved from a purely communications and messaging-oriented medium to one that supports mobile data communication in general and acts as an application platform. As shown in a recent survey conducted by MDA, easy access to the present-day wireless Internet has resulted in mobile devices gaining more and more attention and popularity. The growth of and demand for mobile Web applications is expected to increase rapidly in the near future, as a range of software companies and mobile device manufacturers release increasingly accessible tools for creating mobile Web application and services. From a variety of possible development environments of this kind, the author has selected and examined two leading contenders, the J2ME and the Microsoft .NET mobile Web application development environments. This document reports the product life cycle of pilot mobile web applications, designed and implemented in each host environment in tum. A feature-by-feature investigation and comparison of the J2ME and .NET environments was carried out, covering the range of issues necessary for a complete mobile Web application development life cycle. The resulting analysis addresses features and efficiencies of the application development environment and the target deployment environment, the degree to which the resultant services are compatible on a variety of platforms, and the ease with which applications can be designed to be extensible. The thesis offers an objective evaluation of the J2ME and the .NET mobile development environments, which highlights their strengths and weaknesses, and suggests guidelines for designing, creating, and deploying high quality mobile Web applications. The research uncovers no clear winner across all categories assessed. J2ME currently favours situations in which bandwidth is limited and client side processing power is relatively sufficient, it exerts the processing power of mobile devices over distributed network environments. .NET requires a less constrained network throughput, but performs adequately on clients with more limited processing power, supports a more diverse target platform range, and offers a more efficient, in terms of development time, development environment. Both technologies are likely to receive significant user support for some time.

Abstract:
Interaction involves people communicating and reacting to each other. This process is key to the study of discourse, but it is not easy to study systematically how interaction takes place in a specific communicative event, or how it is typically performed over a series of repeated communicative events. However, with a written record of the interaction, it becomes possible to study the process in some detail. This thesis investigates interaction through asynchronous written discussion forums in a computer-mediated learning environment. In particular, this study investigates pragmatic aspects of the communicative event which the asynchronous online discussions comprise. The first case study examines response patterns to messages by looking at the content of initial messages and responses, in order to determine the extent to which characteristics of the messages themselves or other situational factors affect the interaction. The second study examines in what ways participants use a range of discourse devices, including formulaic politeness, humour and supportive feedback as community building strategies in the interaction. The third study investigates the role of the subject line of messages in the interaction, for example by examining how participants choose different types of subject lines for different types of messages. The fourth study examines to what extent features serving a deictic function are drawn on in the interaction and then compares the findings to both oral conversation and formal academic discourse. The overall findings show a complex communicative situation shaped by the medium itself, type of activity, the academic discipline and topic of discussion and by the social and cultural aspects of tertiary education in an online learning environment. In addition, the findings may also provide evidence of learning.
The four case studies presented in Language and interaction in online asynchronous communication in university level English courses investigate written discussion forum interaction in a computer-mediated learning environment. These studies deal with different, yet related, aspects of discussion forum communication. Aspects included are the labeling and response patterns of messages, community-building strategies among participants and features of informal conversation and formal academic writing in the messages. Building on discourse analysis combined with content analysis and corpus method, the work systematically examines the linguistic patterns of communication in the discussion forums. The findings show that there are multiple factors at work simultaneously that affect the linguistic choices by the discourse participants. The constraints and opportunities of the communication are not only connected to the fact that it is computer-mediated, but also to the fact that it is written and in a particular academic environment. Knowledge of the choices available and of what factors potentially affect them is useful for anybody involved in research on net-based teaching and learning.

Abstract:
Background: Nearly 45 million adults in the United States live with a mental health disorder and only 43% of them seek treatment. One of the major barriers to seeking treatment is accessibility and can be addressed through telepsychology, or providing services with technology. With technological improvements in written communication, using computer-mediated communication (CMC; e.g. text messaging) has become more regularly used and examined in healthcare. To date, little research has focused on the use of practitioner language in telepsychology. Method: Two samples (university sample and national sample) totaling 396 participants were asked to rate a therapist on attractiveness (i.e. likability and sociability), expertness, and trustworthiness after reading one of four text-message introductions. The messages varied in the language used: Jargon, jargon with layman explanations, layman only, and text speak. Analysis: The participants’ ratings of the therapist were analyzed using analysis of variance to examine differences between the rating means. Results: University participants rated a therapist higher in attractiveness when the text-message used layman language only compared to jargon, jargon with layman, and text speak. Both samples rated the therapist lower in attractiveness, expertness, and likelihood to use services of therapist when the text-message contained text speak.

Abstract:
The marine conservation organization Sea Shepherd is most known for its radical direct action, e. g., against whale poaching. This thesis examines the campaign “Operation Dolphin Bycatch,” coordinated by the French branch of the NGO, through discourse analysis and interviews with Sea Shepherd France (SSF) members. Dolphins serve as the flagship species of the campaign. They allow SSF to criticize non-selective fishing methods that cause the accidental killing of dolphins in the Bay of Biscay. With expressions from war and religion, SSF portrays the French government and most fishermen as enemies of the dolphins’ wellbeing that pursue self-interested profit values. It is found that SSF positions itself as radical more in its worldview than its approaches. The ecological philosophy of biocentrism contradicts the anthropocentrism that dominates society. In this campaign, the NGO uses “outsider” tactics: It exerts pressure on French policy-makers with footage of dolphin bycatch and takes great care to maintain international legitimacy by staying within legal boundaries.

In this research, we analyzed usages of the word tipo, with emphasis on the study of its hedging function, under the assumptions of Cognitive Linguistics in Lakoff (1987) and, more specifically, The Mental Spaces Theory, proposed by Fauconnier (1994, 1997) and Fauconnier & Turner (2002). We took into account contributions of Textual Linguistics, as well. Firstly, we aimed to verify the importance of the study of the hedge tipo, in Brazilian Portuguese of the current days; and, secondly, to search for pragmatic motivations, in the context of online communication, which could influence the occurrence of this hedge, considered an innovative usage and characteristic of the oral language, in more formal contexts, such as news websites. For this, we collected 100 occurrences of usages of tipo on blogs, websites and news websites, using Google, in cases that tipo neither is a noun nor is accompanied by the preposition de. The analysis was performed in two parts. Firstly, it was based on syntactic and semantic aspects, in which we observed the presence of 40 cases of tipo as a hedge. Secondly, we took into account some pragmatic and discursive aspects, which contributed for the explanation of the cases in analysis. As a result, we concluded that the hedge tipo plays an important role in conveying viewpoint, by promoting rich cognitive processes, such as conceptual blending and analogy. In addition, we found out that the presence of this hedge is more evident in informal contexts, since most of the cases in more formal contexts occurred in the form of reported speeches. The importance of this work is the contribution to the study of hedges and the description of the Brazilian Portuguese language. In addition, it emphasizes the context of virtual communication, which is an opportune place for the emergence and dissemination of new linguistic usages

Abstract:
The video streaming business has grown substantially during the last decades. To optimize the user experience in video streaming, it is important to know how the user satisfaction relates to the technical qualities for the video streaming services, such as bufferings and startup times.  The Net Promoter Score (NPS) is a widely used management tool used in surveys to measure customer satisfaction and loyalty. The users are categorized into three user groups based on a survey question. This thesis investigates whether it is possible to find correlations between the three user groups based on NPS ratings and measured technical qualities from video streams. Initial data exploring through information visualization suggested that the data should be separated into live streams and video-on-demand. Statistical analysis showed that the NPS user groups have no correlations to how long the users are watching the streams, nor to how long the video takes to start. The results showed, that the users watching live streams seem to be more sensitive to lower qualities than those watching video- on-demand. However, this could also be due to the fact that the measured technical qualities during live streams are generally lower. The buffering and the seek time proved to have correlations to the measured user satisfaction, but several other factors such as the actual video content could also have big impacts on the user’s ratings. The users which had experienced more buffering and longer seek times were more likely to rate the service with a lower score, than the average user.

As of 2011, with the consolidation of web.2.0, social networks and the expansion of mobile devices, we have seen the emergence of direct action movements with specific social and communicational practices. Movements with net-activist actions (Massimo Di Felice) begin with the neo-Zapatista conflict in Chipas (1994), through the Arab Spring insurgency movements in Tahir Square in Egypt, the 15 M Movement in Spain, the Occupy Wall Street in the United States, the June Journeys in Brazil and the post-June 2013 movements. We perceive a reconfiguration of information architecture that not only transforms social movements, but also leads us to rethink the classical concepts of power, politics, resistance and communication itself. These movements, with their own characteristics, point to a social and previously theoretical challenge, which is pointed out in the present dissertation through the concepts of resistance presented by actors such as Foucault, Deleuze, Michael Hardt and Antônio Negri, by actors such as Ciro Marcondes Son and Cyberculture by Manuel Castells, Erick Felinto, André Lemos, Andrew Keen and others. The objective of this research, besides theoretically presenting some basic concepts for the understanding of cyberculture and net-activism, is to work empirically by narrating the controversies through macro analysis of the network through graphs that go from the analysis of network polarization , passes through the web page of the Free Brazil Movement, until arriving at the micro analysis of the movement of the streets on March 15: day of the biggest protest promoted by the movement. Therefore, the general objective of this dissertation is to seek a theoretical and practical analysis of the net-activist movements in Brazil, taking as a case study the Free Brazil Movement for a greater understanding of how social movements have changed their form of communication and resistance within the complex field and ambivalent of cyberculture. As a theoretical and methodological basis we use Bruno Latour's Actor-Network theory and as a methodology we use the Cartography of the Controversies of Bruno Latour and Tommasso Venturini. Through various software such as Ford, Netvizz and Gephi, we were able to map the actors, flows of attention and conversation of the Free Brazil Movement network. We conclude with a narrative of the controversies in the last chapter indicating both controversies of the Free Brazil Movement and its participants or followers. In narrating the controversies of the MBL, it becomes clear how social networks potentiate and are means for polarization of the discourses reverberating in political, ideological and social actions. We see how we can map, through the networks, controversies of specific movements revealing several actors of the network previously unseen.

Holmes, Daniel John. "McMPI : a managed-code message passing interface library for high performance communication in C#." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/7732.

Full text
Abstract:
This work endeavours to achieve technology transfer between established best-practice in academic high-performance computing and current techniques in commercial high-productivity computing. It shows that a credible high-performance message-passing communication library, with semantics and syntax following the Message-Passing Interface (MPI) Standard, can be built in pure C# (one of the .Net suite of computer languages). Message-passing has been the dominant paradigm in high-performance parallel programming of distributed-memory computer architectures for three decades. The MPI Standard originally distilled architecture-independent and language-agnostic ideas from existing specialised communication libraries and has since been enhanced and extended. Object-oriented languages can increase programmer productivity, for example by allowing complexity to be managed through encapsulation. Both the C# computer language and the .Net common language runtime (CLR) were originally developed by Microsoft Corporation but have since been standardised by the European Computer Manufacturers Association (ECMA) and the International Standards Organisation (ISO), which facilitates portability of source-code and compiled binary programs to a variety of operating systems and hardware. Combining these two open and mature technologies enables mainstream programmers to write tightly-coupled parallel programs in a popular standardised object-oriented language that is portable to most modern operating systems and hardware architectures. This work also establishes that a thread-to-thread delivery option increases shared-memory communication performance between MPI ranks on the same node. This suggests that the thread-as-rank threading model should be explicitly specified in future versions of the MPI Standard and then added to existing MPI libraries for use by thread-safe parallel codes. This work also ascertains that the C# socket object suffers from undesirable characteristics that are critical to communication performance and proposes ways of improving the implementation of this object.

Abstract:
STG decomposition is a promising approach to tackle the complexity problems arising in logic synthesis of speed independent circuits, a robust asynchronous (i.e. clockless) circuit type. Unfortunately, STG decomposition can result in components that in isolation have irreducible CSC conflicts. Generalising earlier work, it is shown how to resolve such conflicts by introducing internal communication between the components via structural techniques only.

Full text
Abstract:
This research explored college students’ attitudes toward online romantic relationships and their intentions to develop this type of relationship. Borrowing elements from both social cognitive theory and the theory of reasoned action, this study introduced a model that combined perceptions of indirect past experiences, beliefs, attitudes and social norms and associations with people’s intentions to form romantic relationships over the Internet. Under the premise that people learn through observation, this study argued that when direct experience is lacking (as was the case with this sample), other sources of indirect experiences with online romantic relationships (perceptions of significant others’ past experiences and exposure to media messages about online romantic relationships) would relate to people’s beliefs about these relationships and their perceptions of what significant others think (social norms). Based on the theory of reasoned action, it was hypothesized that people’s beliefs about online relationships would then be related to their attitudes toward such relationships. Lastly, also under the framework of reasoned action, it was hypothesized that both attitudes and social norms would predict people’s intentions to form or develop romantic relationships over the Internet. The purpose of this study was thus to examine how well predictors from social cognitive theory and the theory of reasoned action explained intentions to form online romantic relationships. A pilot study was conducted to derive beliefs and attitudes toward online romantic relationships and to test the main instrument. In the main study, 226 college students with no prior direct experience forming online romantic relationships completed a web-based self-administered questionnaire. A structural equation modeling (SEM) approach was used to assess the relative importance and the strength among the different constructs. Results indicated that the overall model fit the data well. The final model accounted for 46% of the variance in people’s intentions to form online romantic relationships. Perceptions of friends’ and family’s past experiences with online romantic relationships were significantly related to people’s beliefs about these relationships. However, only friends’ past experiences was related to social norms. Exposure to media (news stories or ads about dating sites) was not related to either beliefs or social norms. Consistent with the theory of reasoned action, beliefs were strongly correlated with attitudes about online romantic relationships, and lastly, both attitudes and social norms emerged as instrumental factors in predicting participants’ intention to develop online romantic relationships. Overall, the findings confirmed the importance of integrating indirect past experiences in understanding people’s attitudes and intentions to form romantic relationships over the Internet. The theoretical and methodological implications of these results for the study and understanding of online romantic relationships are discussed.

Abstract:
The purpose of this master’s thesis is to design and to realize the universal analyzer of serial buses. At the beginning there are described in detail specifications and properties of buses IC, SMBus, PMBus and of the UART interface. The second part is targeted especially to design and to realize the control unit, which is the main part of the whole analyzer. It provides connecting to the unknown bus, to buses IC, SMBus, PMBus and SPI and to the UART interface. The main part of the control unit is the microcontroller PIC24HJ128GP204, which partially analyses connected bus. In the next part there is created the user application for PC, which controls and sets the control unit and receives from it partially analyzed data through the USB port. These data are used for the rest of the analysis that is done by the user application. Results may be presented to user in graphical or text form. The user application provides export of results into some of image formats. Supported formats are PS, SVG, PDF, PNG and BMP. In case of the control unit is not available, the user may choose the simulator to simulate some functions that the application provides. It supports simulation of the analysis of the unknown bus and the IC bus. The user application also contains the function of the generating own signals. Signals can be created interactively by using the mouse in the graphical representation of this signal. They can be sent to the control unit and after that it applies them to output. This function is not supported in current version of the control unit software. The user application includes some items, which do not have implemented any methods and they are prepared for the future upgrading of the analyzer. It means especially user controls and components for signal conversions between any buses.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Our society has become more and more digitalized and we have access to more information than ever before, which has had an effect on both our personal and professional lives. This change has naturally also changed the way in which organizations are structured and how they communicate – both internally and externally. Intranets, e-mail and other technical channels are an important part of most organizations in-house communication today. The aim of this study is to examine how the internal communication in a medium-sized firm, CranabSlagkraft in the north of Sweden, works. The focus in the study is on the existing intranet, and if there are any differences in the opinions between the firms leaders and the employees that works in the production. The empirical material is collected through semi-structured interviews with representatives for the employees as well as the leaders of the firm. Theories central for the study is organizational com-munication, including leadership and the communication process, information overload, prior research about intranets and its effects and James Carney’s theory about two contrasting ways to define communi-cation.The result of the study indicate differences in views on what communication is between the leaders of the firm and the employees in production, which affects how they experience the current routines for communication in the company. Those differences correspond in many ways James Carney’s theories about a transmission view of communication and a ritual view of communication. The result also gives an insight in how the introduction of digital technology can affect the existing communication struc-tures. In this case, for example, the company has a hierarchic communication structure, where the infor-mation travels vertically from top to bottom, which the introduction of an intranet did not change. This despite theories, like the push and pull models, that suggests that intranets make the communication more horizontal.

Abstract:
Traffic signals are one of the vital control elements of traffic management and control systems under purview of Departments of Transportation (DOTs) nationwide. They directly affect mobility, safety, and environmental parameters of the transportation networks. Traffic engineers in DOTs often face pressure for extracting additional benefits from existing signal control equipment, influenced by evident increase in demand and changing traffic patterns. However, they often face difficulties, usually from the maturity of the field equipment, lack of understanding of currently available equipment capabilities, and multitude of market available equipment. Besides issues in everyday operation, the need for improved decision-making process appears during selection and implementation of the future signal-control subsystems. This thesis is focusing on the issues related with the need for extracting additional benefits and improved planning of signal-control equipment deployment. Presented are several methodologies and techniques for modeling and assessing traffic signal controllers and supporting communication infrastructure. Techniques presented in this thesis include Petri Net modeling language, Software-in-the-loop simulation, and Geographical Information Systems. Specific capabilities of listed techniques are coordinated for maximizing their benefits in addressing specific issues. The intended positive effects reflect in enhanced comprehension, numerical representation, and analysis of state-of-the-art signal control subsystems in focus. Frameworks, methodologies, and example cases are presented for each of the specific issues in identified traffic signal subsystems, along with recommendations for further research.

Abstract:
The Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly gaining ground in our daily life. There is a trend that the number of devices and data increases rapidly in the future. Meanwhile, IoT platforms are emerging to enable people conveniently deal with the IoT and these huge amount of data and devices. Therefore, the goal in this paper is to perform a quantitative evaluation on Microsoft Azure, one of the IoT platform, about its advantages and disadvantages under press to determine if Azure IoT is fit for future IoT. In order to reach this goal, Azure IoT Hub is used as a bridge to connect and manage lots of IoT devices which send and receive huge amount of data. .NET is used to simulate devices and connect them to the IoT Hub. The two-way communication from sensor to cloud and from cloud to actuator is implemented through MQTT protocol. This paper makes measurements on three metrics including response time from sensor sending messages to actuator receiving messages, scalability and cost and analyzes them in detail. Besides, the analysis is also made in a specific scenario which has high demand on sensor update to see how Azure IoT performs. Finally, conclusion is made on Microsoft Azure IoT's advantages and disadvantages under stress.

Abstract:
Compared to the general population, socially disadvantaged patients have higher rates of chronic illness and require more complex medical care. They also endorse higher levels of psychological distress and tend to engage in behavioral risk factors such as poor diet, physical inactivity, and smoking. These issues are particularly concerning given that this population tends to adhere less to medical recommendations, has limited access to health resources, and receives poorer treatment from providers. In an effort to address this disparity, The Affordable Care Act will expand health care access to an additional 23 million uninsured and 17 million underinsured Americans. However, simply expanding access to health care without examining and improving upon factors related to the physician-patient relationship would not fully address the health care needs of this population. This study sought to improve the quality of care received by socially disadvantaged patients by better understanding the role of race and gender on the physician-patient communication process and patient outcomes in a safety net primary care clinic. The study sample consisted of 330 low-income, uninsured/underinsured African American and White patients and 41 resident physicians. Overall, African American patients and their doctors and White doctors and their patients were viewed as engaging in the highest levels of communication. South Asian physicians, and male South Asian physicians in particular, had the lowest levels of communication and the patients of these providers experienced less improvement in their physical health. Patient education level influenced physicians’ perceptions of their patients to the extent that patients with higher educational levels were viewed as engaging in lower levels of communication. Last, indicators of a good physician-patient relationship were associated with higher levels of patient reported adherence. Practice implications and areas for future research are discussed.

Abstract:
Mobile operators face a scenario characterised by new challenges such as growing data consumption, a slowdown in subscriber growth and reduced revenues due to the success of OTT providers. To remain competitive, mobile operators must offer affordable services and think on strategies to retain current customers. Quality of Experience (QoE) is a well-established methodology for measuring and understanding the overall level of customer satisfaction with a service and has been presented as a way to improve telecommunication services. Even though QoE can be used to solve problems such as customer loyalty and optimisation of network resources in mobile networks, there is a great lack of knowledge on how mobile operators can take advantage of QoE and its potential benefits. This thesis explores the incorporation of QoE in mobile networks to improve their service offering from a technical, regulatory and business perspective. The technical level focuses on the definition of the mechanism to integrate QoE in the operation of mobile networks. The second part of this study has been focused on the regulatory framework on Net Neutrality. Finally, the third part of this thesis focuses on the identification of potential business scenarios and models based on the incorporation of QoE in mobile networks. An important conclusion is that due to the nature of the challenges faced by the mobile industry, a QoE analysis cannot be limited to a technical discussion. A technical solution can be the first step to the first step to overcoming industry challenges. However, it is important that a technical decision comes along with an informed analysis of the regulatory conditions and the business implications of the proposed solution. On the other hand, mobile operators require new methods that integrate technical, market and business considerations to improve their service offer. A method analysed in this dissertation is a Customer Experience Management (CEM) platform. Given the technical, regulatory and business factors covered in this thesis, a CEM platform can be used by mobile operators to make a better use of QoE in their business operation.

Abstract:
Since the sixties, new technologies have conquered cultural areas. Thanks to technological power, artists have transformed these technologies into tools of aesthetic research. Thus, the web has become a medium for digital art as well as network design in addition to establishing universal networking. In the same context, criticizers, thinkers and philosophers have announced a state of crisis (As announced by Aude de Kerros, Jean-Pierre Béland, Yves Michaud, Veronica Fabbri, Daniel Lagoutte, etc.). According to them, this crisis is due to lack of communication and dissolution of artistic movements, surely progressive loss of communication between artists. In the Web world, email has emerged several communication fantasies. It has also established the reactivity and the interactivity between people. For this, my research Thesis focuses on artistic practices that impact positively on communication between artists. This research also proposes an artist networking. Practical progress:In 2006, I received an email containing a scanned work of Luc Fierens, a Belgian artist. I emailed this work to nearly 7000 addresses of artists to solicit their interactions. This is to acquire about 200 contributions and answers, some of which are described on the blog: http://ramziturki.artblog.fr/11/. My Thesis aims to analyze and enhance the communication between artists via tools of modern communication

Abstract:
In recent years, image segmentation by using deep neural networks has made great progress. However, reaching a good result by training with a small amount of data remains to be a challenge. To find a good way to improve the accuracy of segmentation with limited datasets, we implemented a new automatic chest radiographs segmentation experiment based on preliminary works by Chunliang using deep learning neural network combined with shape context information. When the process was conducted, the datasets were put into origin U-net at first. After the preliminary process, the segmented images were then repaired through a new network with shape context information. In this experiment, we created a new network structure by rebuilding the U-net into a 2-input structure and refined the processing pipeline step. In this proposed pipeline, the datasets and shape context were trained together through the new network model by iteration. The proposed method was evaluated on 247 posterior-anterior chest radiographs of public datasets and n-folds cross-validation was also used. The outcome shows that compared to origin U-net, the proposed pipeline reaches higher accuracy when trained with limited datasets. Here the "limited" datasets refer to 1-20 images in the medical image field. A better outcome with higher accuracy can be reached if the second structure is further refined and shape context generator's parameter is fine-tuned in the future.

Abstract:
When people go online and leave their mark in bytes, how do their traces get preserved, shared, or lost? In the early 2000’s through about 2012, communities of millennial girl web developers and bloggers flourished on the English-speaking Internet. They would write about their intimate lives, code their website designs from scratch, create portfolios of graphics, and forge friendships with fellow bloggers that lasted through years. Most of these blogs are now gone; only patches remain as screenshots on the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. For my senior project, I explored how techniques used in glitch art, normally used for destroying image files for purely aesthetic effects, could also be used to embed texts that could be read by humans inside digital photos. I excavated photos and self-portraits of individual bloggers whose old content has since been erased from their original domains as of 2018. Then, I overrode pieces of each image file with the respective bloggers’ journal entries extracted from https://web.archive.org. The result is a picture irreversibly corroded by the loss of its original data, akin to the state of their bloggers' archived websites. It still functions like any image file in that the picture can be copied, shared, and viewed on another computer. However, unlike a typical image file, it also hides a patchwork of legible English text; one can “dig” into the image’s encoding and uncover nuggets of letters from a past Internet presence--specifically, that of a millennial girl's thoughts on identity, life, and the joys and struggles of coding and managing her own website.

Abstract:
Businesses have historically had a negative impact on the environment by contributing to pollution, the increase of greenhouse emissions, neglection of responsible waste disposal, and deforestation among other things. Governments around the globe have been trying to align to goals and principles to decrease the negative impacts of humans, and it is now time for companies to step up and contribute to a more sustainable society. The research question for this study is “what can be the challenges when working with sustainability frameworks as an IT consultant firm?”. To answer this, research within Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), green ICT, and sustainable business have been conducted. In addition to this, the relation of two sustainability frameworks within IT consultant strategies have been assessed. Other than that, a case study have been carried out at an IT consultant firm. A result of this case study is a mapping of processes and their work with digital sustainability and sustainability frameworks. Two of the greatest challenges discussed in this study are about measuring and communicating the sustainability impact of projects.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract : We confront the tension between legitimacy vs. manipulation in persuasive discourse: the old tricky aporia of argumentation, dating back to the ancient Greeks when they first founded democracy. This has been more recently highlighted by Philippe Breton (2008) as the subtle “paradox of argumentation,” which concerns the dynamics of human language as a valuable hermeneutical enterprise, one susceptible to (mis) interpretations as well as to phenomena of critical dissent and controversies. Our main questions subsequently turn around the central concern of how we may promote democratic participation and discussion, in the era of the Internet, in ways that can work to motivate the improvement of our inter-subjective communicative performances in healthy and legitimate manners, instead of facilitating corruption via blunt censorship or other manipulative tricks. As we consider dialogue and argumentation to be the most crucial traits of the democratic enterprise, we also discuss the role played by American pragmatism to the nourishment of such democratic ideal. Particularly, we focus on the theoretical approaches proposed by Peirce and Mead concerning autonomy and reflexivity, not without mentioning its champion on education, John Dewey, whose works have all been preoccupied with the maintenance and development of the main axes for good functioning democratic societies, namely: education, science, and communication. To better reflect about this, we integrate into Breton’s triangle a Peirce-Mead semiotic “triadic” approach that supports autonomy, so as to propose a compounded model that is able to both encompass the rich possibilities of communication and, on the other hand, delimit as much as possible the range of interactive dialogism, peculiar to human language, so as to foster ethical (legitimate) exchanges. All these elements considered in Part A prepare the terrain for the subsequent considerations developed in Part B, regarding an ethics for digital media. Conclusions: • The paradigm proposed by Discourse Ethics, under the light of a semiotic approach on autonomy, reflexivity and the self, is suggested as a reliable theoretical framework of departure. • This has led us to a compounded ‘triadic’ model that incorporates the most relevant aspects from the views of Peirce, Mead, Grize and Breton. • Then, in Part B, concerning the challenges brought by Digital Media to contemporary societies, we conclude that the more of one’s privacy an individual is required to relinquish for governments and/or companies (no matter the reasons involved), the more transparency by those handling one’s sensitive information should be required to be provided, in return. • All this in order to prevent manipulation and abuses of power as much as possible, so as to keep a balanced ‘communicative triangle’ among interlocutors (according to the proposed triangular model), essential for democracies to be maintained and thrive, so as to rend possible the adoption of a Magna Carta for the Internet that would be globally acceptable and focused on the three main principles of: - net neutrality; - freedom of expression; - privacy protection.

Finnie, Michael. "Conflict & communication : consequences of female nest confinement in yellow-billed hornbills." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2018. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/271223.

Abstract:
The most striking feature of hornbills (Bucerotiformes) is their unusual nesting behaviour. Before laying, a female hornbill enters the nest in a tree cavity. Uniquely among birds, she then seals the nest entrance using her faeces and locally available materials, leaving a narrow gap only 1 cm wide. Through this tiny slit, the female is totally dependent on her mate for between 40 days in the smallest hornbills and up to 130 days in the largest. Once walled in the nest, the female will lay her eggs and shed all of her wing and tail feathers. The male then becomes completely responsible for provisioning his mate and a few weeks later, the chicks. When her feathers have regrown, the female breaks out of the nest, often before the chicks are fully grown. The chicks then reseal the entrance until they too are ready to fledge. This thesis describes attempts to better understand the nesting behaviour of hornbills. The first chapter introduces hornbill ecology and behaviour and highlights their potential as model systems for studying conflict and communication. Chapter 2 describes the methods used to set up a study population of Southern Yellow-Billed Hornbill (Tockus leucomelas) consisting of 47 occupied nest boxes, over 35km2 in the Southern Kalahari Desert, South Africa. Chapter 3 summarises behaviour over three breeding seasons from October 2008 to April 2011. Female feather moult followed a precise staggered pattern, unlike other populations. Widespread filial cannibalism by females of both eggs and chicks was observed for the first time. The possible proximate causes of cannibalism are explored. Egg cannibalism allowed females to recoup some of their energetic investment, while cannibalism of chicks served as an efficient mechanism of brood reduction for nests with low paternal feeding rate. Chapter 4 investigates how females communicate need for nesting materials to males. Females altered the rate and structure of their begging calls when experimentally deprived of nest lining and males in turn delivered more nest materials. Chapter 5 examines the factors that determine how long females remain in the nest. Females with larger broods stayed in the nest longer, irrespective of their own or their chicks’ condition or male feeding rates. This raises questions about the role of mothers in the nest. Chapter 6 addresses this issue, demonstrating that females controlled sibling competition in the nest. Experimental temporary removal of mothers led to increased intrabrood aggression and more uneven food distribution in the brood, with larger chicks taking a greater share. The final chapter draws these findings together and the potential for future research is discussed.

The DOORS framework is a versatile, lightweight message-based framework developed in ANSI C++. It builds upon research experience and subsequent knowledge garnered from the use and development of CVOPS and OVOPS, two well known protocol development frameworks that have obtained widespread acceptance and use in both the Finnish industry and academia. It conceptually resides between the operating system and the application, and provides a uniform development environment shielding the developer from operating system speci c issues. It can be used for developing network services, ranging from simple socket-based systems, to protocol implementations, to CORBA-based applications and object-based gateways. Originally, DOORS was conceived as a natural extension from the OVOPS framework to support generic event-based, distributed and client-server network applications. However, DOORS since then has evolved as a platform-level middleware solution for researching the provision of converged services to both packet-based and telecommunications networks, enterprise-level integration and interoperability in future networks, as well as studying application development, multi-casting and service discovery protocols in heterogeneous IPv6 networks. In this thesis, two aspects of development work with DOORS take place. The rst is the investigation of the Network Address Translation (NAT) traversal problem to give support to applications in the DOORS framework that are residing in private IP networks to interwork with those in public IP networks. For this matter this rst part focuses on the development of a client in the DOORS framework for the Session Traversal Utilities for NAT (STUN) protocol, to be used for IP communications behind a NAT. The second aspect involves secure communications. Application protocols in communication networks are easily intercepted and need security in various layers. For this matter the second part focuses on the investigation and development of a technique in the DOORS framework to support the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol, giving the ability to application protocols to rely on secure transport layer services.
