We analyze the central economic issues raised by U.S. v Microsoft. Network effects and economies of scale in applications programs created a barrier to entry for new operating system competitors, which the combination of Netscape Navigator and the Java programming language potentially could have lowered. Microsoft took actions to eliminate this threat to its operating system monopoly, and some of Microsoft's conduct very likely harmed consumers. While we recognize the risks of the government's proposed structural remedy of splitting Microsoft in two, we are pessimistic that a limited conduct r

New user-centered features were proposed based on the analysis of human limitation in using web browsers. A conventional browser and an enhanced browser were built by using JavaScript and Common Gateway Interface (CGI) programming to rewrite the interface of Netscape Navigator. An experiment was conducted with 64 subjects to test four hypotheses concerning the relationship between search strategies and task types and the usability of the enhanced browser. Different search strategies are found between two tasks. Once the subjects became skilled at using the enhanced browser their performance wa

This will force a change in the role of IC cards in healthcare card systems from a data carrier to an access key medium. At the Medical Informatics Department of Kyoto University Hospital we are developing a smart card patient information project where patient databases are accessed via the Internet. The World Wide Web has recently become a household word, but what does it have to offer those in the language teaching and research fields? This article explains how the Web helps nontechnical users access on-line data without having to learn complicated commands or have extensive backgrounds in Internet technology. This new 'point-and-click' way of getting all that the Internet has to offer may be the long-sought 'killer application' of the information superhighway. Intranet, a private corporate network that mirrors the internet Web structure, is the new internal communication technology being embraced by more than 50% of large US companies. Within the intranet, computers using Web-server software store and manage documents built on the Web’s hypertext markup language (HTML) format. This emerging technology allows disparate computer systems within companies to “speak” to one another using the Internet’s TCP/IP protocol. A “fire wall” allows internal users Internet access, but denies external intruders intranet access. As industrial microscopists, how can

It is common in web application to provide interactions between end-users and databases. These applications may be at risk to code injection attacks which come first of weak validation in the parameters that the users use. If one of these applications accept input from a client and execute it without first validating it, attackers have the potential to execute their own queries and thus extract sensitive information from the lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP) directory. LDAP services are the key components in companies. It is an Internet standard for accessing directory services. &nb

The World Wide Web is now the most used multimedia information system on Internet allowing, by means of Web browsers such as Netscape Navigator or Mosaic, distribution or consultation of hypermedia documents. Although the Web has appeared only recently, the growth of its use has generated the emergence of numerous information and knowledge bases in the medical field. We suggest to investigate extended functionalities in order to introduce cooperative activities in our medical information system. These new activities allow asynchronous exchange of records and synchronous cooperation for a bette

Abstract Network computing is based on the convergence of computing, communications, and multimedia content. The concept has been the basis of visionary treatises on the information society as far back as the 1960s,1 but the actual convergence always seemed just around the corner until the 1990s, when the Internet exploded onto the scene—the global network of networks that evolved from the U.S. Defense Department’s ARPANET (created in 1973). However, use of the Internet had never spread much beyond the research and academic communities until the arrival of the World Wide Web in the early 1990s
