Abstract:
“One-pot regeneration”, which is simple regneneration method of ammonia borane (AB) using hydrazine and liquid ammonia, enables conversion of AB from hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) after milling hydrogenation. Solution 11B-NMR revealed the presence of AB after NH3/N2H4 treatment of milled h-BN (BNHx) although the yield of AB was less than 5%. The conversion mechanism was clarified as B-H bonds on the h-BN surface created by ball-milling under hydrogen pressure have an ability to form AB, which was confirmed by Thermogravimetry-Residual Gas Analysis (TG-RGA) and Infrared (IR) analysis. The reaction routes are also the same as regeneration route of polyborazylene because intermediates of AB such as (B(NH2)3 and hydrazine borane were found by solution 11B-NMR after soaking BNHx in liquid NH3 and hydrazine, respectively. Because of the fact that all reactions proceed on the h-BN surface and no reaction proceeds when neat h-BN is treated, breaking of B3N3 ring structure and then creation of B-H bond is the key issue to increase conversion yield of AB.

Abstract:
We enumerate trivalent reticulations of two- and three-periodic hyperbolic surfaces by equal-sided n -gonal faces, ( n , 3), where n = 7, 8, 9, 10, 12. These are the simplest hyperbolic generalizations of the planar graphene net, (6, 3) and dodecahedrane, (5, 3). The enumeration proceeds by deleting isometries of regular reticulations of two-dimensional hyperbolic space until the ( n , 3) nets can be embedded in euclidean three-space via periodic hyperbolic surfaces. Those nets are then symmetrized in euclidean space retaining their net topology, leading to explicit crystallographic net embeddings whose edges are as equal as possible, affording candidtae patterns for graphitic schwarzites. The resulting schwarzites are the most symmetric examples. More than one hundred topologically distinct nets are described, most of which are novel.

Abstract:
Neutrophil Extracellular Traps (NETs) represent the networks consisting of DNA, histones, and proteins produced by activated neutrophils. Such structures have been proved to play a crucial role in inducing neutrophil innate immune response in the pathogenesis of such autoimmune conditions as systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, as well as in the pathogenesis of other non-infectious processes, e. g., clotting disorders, thrombosis, diabetes, atherosclerosis, vasculitis and oncology diseases. Recent studies on animal models and human pathologies have uncovered a tremendous role for NETs in tumor progression and metastasis. In this regard, NETs should be considered as pro-oncogenic substances, which further investigation will provide an opportunity to develop new therapeutic strategies.

Abstract:
Software process dynamics challenge the capabilities of process-centered software engineering environments. Dynamic task nets represent evolving software processes by hierarchically organized nets of tasks which are connected by control, data, and feedback flows. Project managers operate on dynamic task nets in order to assess the current status of a project, trace its history, perform impact analysis, handle feedback, adapt the project plan to changed product structures, etc. Developers are supported through task agendas and provision of tools and documents. Chained tasks may be executed in parallel (simultaneous engineering), and cooperation is controlled through releases of document versions. Dynamic task nets are formally specified by a programmed graph rewriting system. Operations on task nets are specified declaratively by graph rewrite rules at a high level of abstraction. Furthermore, editing, analysis, and execution steps on a dynamic task net, which may be interleaved seamlessly, are described in a uniform formalism.

Abstract:
The aim of the research domain known as process mining is to use process discovery to construct a process model as an abstract representation of event logs. The goal is to build a model (in terms of a Petri net) that can reproduce the logs under consideration, and does not allow different behaviours compared with those shown in the logs. In particular, process mining aims to verify the accuracy of the model design (represented as a Petri net), basically checking whether the same net can be rediscovered. However, the main mining methods proposed in the literature have some drawbacks: the classical α-algorithm is unable to rediscover various nets, while the region-based approach, which can mine them correctly, is too complex. In this paper, we compare different approaches and propose some ideas to counter the weaknesses of the region-based approach.

Gains, Francesca. "Understanding department : next steps agency relationships." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1999. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/6028/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the establishment of 'Next Steps' agencies in government and how they were intended to allow the delivery of government goals at arm's length. The research is concerned with how changes in relationships at the heart of Government can be understood. It seeks to address the impact of these changes on the policy process. It does so by examining the nature of the relationship between departments and agencies and asking why some relationships appeared to have worked well and others have not. These questions are not adequately addressed in the existing literature on agencies. The thesis takes a multiple case study approach and draws on the concepts of historical institutionalism, power dependency and policy networks to approach these questions. It is argued that the introduction and development of agencies changed the formal and informal institutional 'rules of the game', affecting the roles actors expected to play and radically altered the distribution of resources in central government. The changed distribution of resources led to the development of new power dependent networks between departments and agencies. Path dependency in the development of the Next Steps concept led to a tension between the idea of agencies operating at 'arm's length' with the continuation of traditional accountability arrangements. The key argument presented is that, where department-agency networks are based on shared values, goals and institutional support, they will be able to manage the tension created by the new institutional arrangements and are able to successfully deliver government goals. In concluding, it is suggested that understanding department-agency relationships as power dependent networks presents three implications. Firstly, for the applicability of this analytical framework to other 'institutional arrangements', secondly for policy making in the core executive and, finally, for insights on normative issues of accountability and autonomy in contemporary governance.

Chang, Ai-Fu. "Process Modeling of Next-Generation Liquid Fuel Production - Commercial Hydrocracking Process and Biodiesel Manufacturing." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/58043.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation includes two process modeling studies -- (1) predictive modeling of large-scale integrated refinery reaction and fractionation systems from plant data – hydrocracking process; and (2) integrated process modeling and product design of biodiesel manufacturing. \r\n1. Predictive Modeling of Large-Scale Integrated Refinery Reaction and Fractionation Systems from Plant Data -- Hydrocracking Processes: This work represents a workflow to develop, validate and apply a predictive model for rating and optimization of large-scale integrated refinery reaction and fractionation systems from plant data. We demonstrate the workflow with two commercial processes -- medium-pressure hydrocracking unit with a feed capacity of 1 million ton per year and high-pressure hydrocracking unit with a feed capacity of 2 million ton per year in the Asia Pacific. This work represents the detailed procedure for data acquisition to ensure accurate mass balances, and for implementing the workflow using Excel spreadsheets and a commercial software tool, Aspen HYSYS from Aspen Technology, Inc. The workflow includes special tools to facilitate an accurate transition from lumped kinetic components used in reactor modeling to the boiling point based pseudo-components required in the rigorous tray-by-tray distillation simulation. Two to three months of plant data are used to validate models' predictability. The resulting models accurately predict unit performance, product yields, and fuel properties from the corresponding operating conditions.\r\n2. Integrated Process Modeling and Product Design of Biodiesel Manufacturing: This work represents first a comprehensive review of published literature pertaining to developing an integrated process modeling and product design of biodiesel manufacturing, and identifies those deficient areas for further development. It also represents new modeling tools and a methodology for the integrated process modeling and product design of an entire biodiesel manufacturing train. We demonstrate the methodology by simulating an integrated process to predict reactor and \r\nseparator performance, stream conditions, and product qualities with different feedstocks. The results show that the methodology is effective not only for the rating and optimization of an existing biodiesel manufacturing, and but also for the design of a new process to produce biodiesel with specified fuel properties.

Abstract:
Significant proportion of composite industry is currently produced using prepregs, cured in autoclave which is very expensive and time consuming process. Dry textile preforms in conjunction with liquid molding techniques can lead to significant reductions in material costs, manufacturing costs and cycle times. These dry preforms are typically 2D woven or braided fabrics which also required lay-up and have low interlaminar properties. Through thickness reinforcement provides solution for this problem as it gives better interlaminar properties as well as near net shape performing. Various 3D performing methods are discussed and reviewed in this research where 3D weaving comes out as ideal process to develop near net shape preforms with more efficiency and better material performance. This research highlights the advantages and limitations of conventional 3D weaving processes. A number of approaches for improving the flexibility of 3D weaving process have been presented including changing fiber architecture in different sections of the preform, tapering in the width and thickness directions and finally to change the fiber orientation. It is concluded that multi step and taper fabrics can be produced on conventional weaving by some modifications. Furthermore, a novel 3D weaving machine is designed and developed after reviewing various patents and weaving methods to overcome limitations of conventional weaving machine. Key criterions from limitations of conventional weaving processes are considered and modified such as multiple weft insertion, limited warp stuffer movement, linear take-up to develop 3D weaving machine. In order to achieve isotropic material, two textile technologies are combined to get final requirements. 3D weaving can provide us fibres in 0° and 90° direction with through thickness reinforcement, whereas braiding can satisfy the requirement of bias direction fibres. Near net shape preforms such as taper and multistep are produced and laminated. Preliminary testing is performed on these laminates to evaluate fibre architectures. Further work is required in terms of machine modification which can provide weave design flexibility to explore various multilayer weave architectures. Thorough testing is required to evaluate and define structure performance and effect of fibre damage during weaving process.

Abstract:
Today the county councils in Sweden prescribe rollators, but in the near future, the retail market for rollators will increase simultaneously with increased pressure within customer requirements. Among the users there is an increased awareness and urge to have a rollator that is up to date according to today’s development of the society. Which the current rollators on the market does not do. The demands from the customer have therefore started to change and are increasing within the coming generations. This is a result of the availability and possibility of all types of information regarding the subject. This means that there is a gap on the market that is growing, which leaves room for developing of a new product, to be able to keep up with technological progress. The goal was to deliver a reasonable concept proposal for a new rollator that with further development could be taken on to the next phase of development and production. The work also aims to clarify the next generation’s customer demands. Identify the issues surrounding today's prescriptions of rollators, as well as clarify the values that are imbedded in the product. The work has been based on a method called Pretzel, which is a product developing process developed by the company Scalae. Mapping of the society's value and norms connected to the rollators shows that the biggest problem among people is the early acceptance of the aid, this results in late prescribing of rollators. Which means that unnecessary injury often occurs, that is in not only unfortunately for the injured person but also a big cost for the society. Especially in comparison with the prescription cost of a rollator. These problems are thereby deep-rooted in values that closely connected to the slow development of rollators. The technological development today is extremely fast and new products are launched on the market at increasingly speed. For example, it would be very unusually to have the same model of mobile phone as your mother had when she was young. But when it comes to rollators, it is most possible that you may get the same model as your grandmother. To decrease the resistance against rollators the final concept is inspired by existing products on the market that already are accepted by the society. Although in other contexts, such as strollers and shopping carts. By using design and functions that the user is already are familiar with reach acceptance faster and reduce the risk of injuries. The final concept is called the Dramator and is a hybrid between a shopping cart and a rollator.

Abstract:
This dissertation, developed within the context of the PRONEX Project of the Environmental Geotechnical Center of PUC-Rio and through a FURNAS-PUC-Rio Convenium, presents a contribution towards the identification and comprehension of mechanisms involved in erosion processes, considering its geological and geotechnical aspects as well as preventive repairing measures in the case of a specific gully formation. The evolution of the studied erosive process has its origin in the mechanical removal of some five meters of a clayey soil layer from a borrow area exploited at the time of the construction of an homogeneous embankment dam belonging to the Itumbiara Hydroelectric Complex. The main aspects of the studied area, such as its location, climatic conditions and soil and vegetation types were considered in the development of the work, besides regional geological aspects and geological-geotechnical features of the area affected by the erosion processes. Taking as a basis the unsaturated weathering profile identified by inspection of the walls of the gully formation, as well as of samples from SPT (standard penetration test) boreholes, four types of soil layers were taken as representative of site conditions. Aiming the identification, classification and definition of the erodibility potential of such materials, specimens from undisturbed block samples (as well as remolded ones) were submitted to laboratory investigations comprising: conventional soil characterization tests; MCT characterization test (mini-MCV); crumb test; desegregation test; pinhole test; Inderbitzen test, permeability tests (also performed in the field); chemical analysis (both soil and voids -water); mineralogical analysis (Xrays diffraction); tensile strength test (under different saturation conditions) and filter paper test (for definition of soil-moisture characteristic curves). Based on the results of the laboratory tests, field observations and data from pore-pressure monitoring (through piezometers installed in the site), erosion mechanisms that may prevail in the area were defined as micro-rills, rill, gully and others. Also, at the end of the work, are presented suggestions for remediation of the site, considering corrective measures used within the context of conventional geotechnical practice, and a methodology to be followed in further investigations related to the characterization of the site and development of erosion processes.

Etheridge, Tom. "A structural design process for a next generation aerospace design environment." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2005. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/72036/.

Full text
Abstract:
The current structural sizing process used to design military aircraft was developed when the emphasis was on the design of the most advanced products possible, with the customer bearing the associated risks of its development. However the marketplace has evolved into where the customer expects ‘better, cheaper, faster’ products and at a lower degree of risk. It is not clear if the current structural design processes meet the needs of this type of market. This work argues that the current proprietary process should be replaced by one that is more flexible, allowing the company to adapt its current structural sizing process to meet the needs of a particular product. It includes a study of the current and future engineering environment within a ‘typical’ airframe design organisation. It looked at the current use of structural optimisation technology throughout the design lifecycle and identified barriers to the potential benefits of wider use. Two existing elements of the organisation’s in-house toolset were adapted to size components and the results compared against the literature. This provided an insight into the toolset and the development of proprietary tools. Finally a multilevel ‘global-local’ sizing approach was developed and studied as an alternative to the current, more tightly coupled, somewhat ‘monolithic’, sizing system. Strength, stability and stiffness design criteria were considered. Automation of the process was also considered and compared against the existing sizing process. It was found that the current labour intensive sizing process could be improved upon using some simple techniques. Based on this a future structural sizing process is suggested which could be implemented using in-house or commercially available tools.

Abstract:
This book is a special edition, compiled for to the MSc Course Research Methodologies as taught at the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering at Delft University of Technology. It is a compilation of useful chapters from several sources on how to structure, set up, carry out and write up your (thesis) research to aid you in writing your research plan. Next to that it acts as a companion during your thesis research. After introducing you to the philosophy of scientific research, subsequent chapters each contribute to the different phases of your research. The book uniquely allows for the often multi- or interdisciplinary research many of you carry out, based on the established Dutch university tradition of (semi-)independent student research, creating a thread through the process for you to follow. This edition is a collection of chapters from An Introduction to Interdisciplinary Research (2016), edited by Steph Menken and Machiel Keestra, and Academic Skills for Interdisciplinary Studies. Revised edition (2019), by Koen van der Gaast, Laura Koenders and Ger Post, published by Amsterdam University Press.

Abstract:
The production processes of product families involve diverse changeovers in manufacturing and assembly processes in order to accommodate a high variety of component parts and assemblies. Reconfiguring production processes based on process platforms has been recognized as a promising means for companies to produce product variety while achieving mass production efficiency. Aiming at modeling support to production reconfiguration, this paper develops a multilevel system of nested colored object-oriented Petri nets (PNs) with changeable structures. In accordance with the fundamental issues of production reconfiguration, the modeling formalism is developed by taking advantages of several PNs techniques, including colored PNs, object-oriented PNs, changeable PNs, and nested PNs. The modeling formalism comprises a resource net, manufacturing net, assembly net and process net. The paper demonstrates how these net definitions are applied to specify production processes at different levels of abstraction. Also reported is a case study in an electronics company. The application results reveals the feasibility of the nested colored object-oriented PNs with changeable structures for capturing and representing the logic of production reconfiguration based on process platforms.
