Abstract:
Many researchers have discussed various topics in universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS) networks: the process of switching from one cell to another for the subscriber and the impact of the quality of the connection during the transition process, quality of services (QoS), the quality of the uplink and downlink carrier line, the various types of code for the voice transmitted through the Internet, especially the research that discussed voice over internet protocol (VoIP) technology as voice travels from cell to cell in mobile networks, depending on the type of delivery. In this paper, a proposed scenario of a UMTS network was implemented to evaluate the multicellular VoIP movement; the proposed UMTS network was simulated using the OPNET 14.5 simulator. The calculation and analysis of the different parameters of the user while moving from one cell to another with different movement speeds considered, the best mean opinion score (MOS) value (3.19) registered for the scenario (soft handover) comparing with another type of handover (3.00).

Abstract:
The next generation of wireless system is expected to provide multimedia, multi class services any time anywhere with seamless mobility and Quality of Service (QoS). In such environment, vertical handoff management plays an important and challenging role. Some of the main functions of vertical handoff management are: to implement appropriate vertical handoff decision to minimize number of unnecessary handoff, to maintain minimum vertical handoff latency for seamless mobility and to provide guaranteed acceptable QoS required for user satisfaction. Thus, in this paper to avoid unnecessary handoff in integrated heterogeneous network we have proposed that the vertical handoff decision depends on coverage area of the network and the speed of the Mobile Node. Application specific cut-off speed for particular coverage range of network during which handoff is beneficial has been determined. Real time applications like HDTV, MPEG-4, and H.261 are considered in integrated heterogeneous network of UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System) and WLAN. Vertical handoff latency is analyzed for varied network traffic load, types of application and varied speed of Mobile Node. Effect of Mobile Node speed on packet loss is also analyzed. Finally, to satisfy user with acceptable end to end QoS, especially in the presence of heterogeneous integrated networks where every network has individual QoS, an end to end QoS mapping scheme between UMTS and WLAN integrated network has been proposed. The simulation is performed using Network Simulator NS-2 with NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) add on module.

In recent years, the development and the deployment of different generation systems such as 3G (UMTS, Wi-Fi), 4G (LTE, WIMAX), and 5G have become a reality for different telecommunication operators. At the same time, the development of new mobile devices with multiple interfaces have shifted the behavior of users concerning the utilization of the internet. Additionally, several streaming servers are available to provide real time applications such as e-commerce transactions, video streaming, online gaming, etc. As a result, the users have the privilege to use different multimedia applications at anytime and anywhere. The major trend in Beyond 4G networks is determining the best access network for the end user in terms of quality of service (QoS) during the network selection decision. Thus, in this article, the authors investigate graph theory and the AHP approach to deal with the network selection issue. The experimental results show that the proposed policy can achieve a significant performance in terms of QoS metrics for real-time streaming than conventional algorithms.

Abstract:
With the development of 4G mobile telecommunication systems, providing users with the convenience of a seamless continuous connection is not enough anymore. Users want to be connected through the best available network with the best quality of service. It is necessary to have a good decision-making algorithm which decides whether it is necessary to perform handoff to another network, the best network to vertically perform handoff to, and the right time to initiate the handover. This paper proposes a new approach in which mobile terminals (MTs) continuously analyze the network and keep a database of the best available networks. The concept is based on QoS aware ant colony built on the vertical handoff mechanism that uses an updated version of ants’ colony optimization decision algorithm (ACOR), the dynamic and static factors such as RSS, the cost of service, bandwidth, the velocity of MT, the power consumption and security, and the module for predicting the traveling distance within an IEEE 802.11 WLAN cell. Simulation results show that we can not only meet the individual needs of users in terms of QoS, but also improve the whole system performance by reducing the number of handover failures and unnecessary handover instances by up to 95%.

In recent years, many telecommunication companies have regarded IP network as a new delivery platform for providing TV services because IP network is equipped with two-way and high-speed communication abilities which are appropriate to provide on-demand services and linear TV programs. However, in this IPTV system, the requests of VOD (video on demand) are usually aggregated in a short period intensively and user preferences are fluctuated dynamically. Moreover, the VOD content is updated frequently under the management of IPTV providers. Thus, an accurate popularity prediction method and an effective cache system are vital because they affect the IPTV performance directly. This paper proposed a new window-based popularity mechanism which automatically responds to the fluctuation of user interests and instantly adjusts the popularity of VOD. Further, we applied our method to a commercial IPTV system and the results illustrated that our mechanism indeed offers a significant improvement.

Millimeter-wave wireless networks of the new fifth generation (5G) have become a primary focus in the development of the information and telecommunication industries. It is expected that 5G wireless networks will increase the data rates and reduce network latencies by an order of magnitude, which will create new telecommunication services for all sectors of the economy. New electronic components such as 28 GHz (27.5 to 28.35 GHz) single-chip transmit radio frequency (RF) front-end monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) will be required for the performance and power consumption of millimeter-wave (mm-wave) 5G communication systems. This component includes a 6-bit digital phase shifter, a driver amplifier and a power amplifier. The output power P3dB and power-added efficiency (PAE) are 29 dBm and 19.2% at 28 GHz. The phase shifter root-mean-square (RMS) phase and gain errors are 3° and 0.6 dB at 28 GHz. The chip dimensions are 4.35 × 4.40 mm.

A network whose interconnections between nodes are implemented without using wires is referred to as wireless network and is usually related to a telecommunication network. As related to wired local area network, wireless channels are error-prone. Performance study and optimization of Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) becomes more essential as its gaining popularity. For performance modelling and evaluation of wireless networks, computer simulation has become one of most widespread tools. While numerous network simulators exist for building a variety of network models, selecting a good network simulator tool is vital in modelling and performance study of wireless networks. Optimized Network Engineering Tools (OPNET) Modeller available to academic institutions at no cost is becoming one of the most widespread network simulators. In this study, the authors used OPNET Modeller 14.5 simulator tool to develop and validate a model for campus based WLAN. The results are expected to display that OPNET Modeller offers credible simulation outcomes close to a genuine system. The effect of network parameters such as the processing time on the performance metrics such as delay and throughput of the various scenarios in the entire network was investigated. The analysis of the results from the simulations carried out can assist the management of computer centre that manages the network in identifying the bottleneck node on the network and for future network capacity building. However, this wireless network involves too many numbers of users which OPNET is not capable to simulate; the authors limited the network to only users in the computer building.

Nowadays, it is hard to imagine work without applying the principle of computer networks, and every day the requirement for high-quality network maintenance is increasing. In order to have a high-quality network; always optimize QoS through the optimization of routing protocols is required. In this paper, the scientific task of optimizing routing processes in hybrid telecommunication networks with guaranteed quality of service is solved by developing models and methods of adaptive routing. To develop methods, a system of Telecommunications network (TN) mathematical models was constructed at the levels of its morphological and functional descriptions. We used a weighted oriented graph as a structural model. Formalization of the main indicators of the network operation efficiency is carried out, which are the network performance (or its derivatives – relative and normalized performances) and indicators of the degree of use of network resources – buffer memory capacities of nodes and bandwidth of the transmission paths. In this paper, an experimental study of the developed models and routing methods was carried out in order to verify their adequacy, evaluate the effectiveness, and develop practical recommendations. The scheme of experiment, focusing on the investigation of processes occurring in the network while solving routing tasks (data gathering, RT processing, distribution, and implementation), is proposed.

In the context of Long-Term Evolution (LTE), the next generation mobile telecommunication network, femtocells are low-power base stations that efficiently provide coverage and capacity indoors. This paper presents a computationally efficient dynamic system-level LTE simulator for enterprise femtocell scenarios. The simulator includes specific mobility and traffic and propagation models for indoor environments. A physical layer abstraction is performed to predict link-layer performance with low computational cost. At link layer, two important functions are included to increase network capacity: Link Adaptation and Dynamic Scheduling. At network layer, other Radio Resource Management functionalities, such as Admission Control and Mobility Management, are also included. The resulting tool can be used to test and validate optimization algorithms in the context of Self-Organizing Networks (SON).

Abstract:
The performance measurement of a service provider network is an important activity. It is required for the smooth operation of the network as well as for reporting and planning. SANReN is a service provider tasked with serving the research and education network of South Africa. It currently has no structure or process for determining network performance metrics to measure the performance of its network. The objective of this study is to determine, through a process or structure, which metrics are best suited to the SANReN environment. This study is conducted in 3 phases in order to discover and verify the solution to this problem. The phases are "Contextualisation", "Design",and "Verification". The "Contextualisation" phase includes the literature review. This provides the context for the problem area but also serves as a search function for the solution. This study adopts the design science research paradigm which requires the creation of an artefact. The "Design" phase involves the creation of the conceptual network performance measurement model. This is the artefact and a generalised model for determining the network performance metrics for an NREN. To prove the utility of the model it is implemented in the SANReN environment. This is done in the "Verification" phase. The network performance measurement model proposes a process to determine network performance metrics. This process includes getting NREN requirements and goals, defining the NRENs network design goals through these requirements, define network performance metrics from these goals, evaluating the NRENs monitoring capability, and measuring what is possible. This model provides a starting point for NRENs to determine network performance metrics tailored to its environment. This is done in the SANReN environment as a proof of concept. The utility of the model is shown through the implementation in the SANReN environment thus it can be said that it is generic.The tools that monitor the performance of the SANReN network are used to retrieve network performance data from. Through understanding the requirements, determining network design goals and performance metrics, and determining the gap the retrieving of results took place. These results are analysed and finally aggregated to provide information that feeds into SANReN reporting and planning processes. A template is provided to do the aggregation of metric results. This template provides the structure to enable metrics results aggregation but leaves the categories or labels for the reporting and planning sections blank. These categories are specific to each NREN. At this point SANReN has the aggregated information to use for planning and reporting. The model is verified and thus the study’s main research objective is satisfied.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Since 2002 data tra c has overtaken voice tra c in volume [1]. Telecom / Network operators still generate most of their income carrying voice tra c. There is however a huge revenue potential in delivering reliable guaranteed data services. Network survivability and recovery from network failures are integral to network reliability. Due to the nature of the Internet, recovery from link failures needs to be distributed and dynamic in order to be scalable. Link failure recovery schemes are evaluated in terms of the survivability of the network, the optimal use of network resources, scalability, and the recovery time of such schemes. The need for recovery time to be improved is highlighted by real-time data tra c such as VoIP and video services carried over the Internet. The goal of this thesis is to examine existing link failure recovery schemes and evaluate the need for their extension, and to evaluate the performance of the proposed link failure recovery schemes. i
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Sedert 2002 het data verkeer die stem verkeer in volume verbygesteek [1]. Telekommunikasie / netwerk operateurs genereer egter steeds die meeste van hul inkomste met stem verkeer. Netwerk oorlewing en die herstel van netwerk mislukkings is integraal tot netwerk stabiliteit. Die samestelling van die Internet noodsaak dat die herstel van skakel mislukkings verspreid en dinamies van natuur moet wees. Die herstel-skema van skakel mislukkings word evalueer in terme van die oorleefbaarheid van die netwerk, die mees e ektiewe benutting van network bronne, aanpasbaarheid, en die herstel tydperk van die skema. Die vinnig moontlikste herstel tydperk word genoodsaak deur oombliklike data verkeer soos VoIP en beeld dienste wat oor die Internet gedra word. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Traffic engineering determines the bandwidth allocation required to meet the traffic loads in a network. Similarly an economic market determines the resource allocation required to meet the demand for resources. The term bandwidth market denotes traffic engineering methods that use economic market methodology to determine the bandwidth allocation required to meet the traffic loads. A bandwidth market is an attractive traffic engineering method because of its distributed nature and ability to respond quickly to changes in network architecture or traffic loads. Network terminology is frequently used to define bandwidth markets. Our approach is to use the concepts of microeconomics to define a bandwidth market. The result is that our bandwidth markets are similar to economic markets, which is advantageous for applying economic principles correctly. This thesis presents the theoretical basis for two bandwidth markets. The first bandwidth market is a framework for building bandwidth markets. The second bandwidth market represents a society of cooperating individuals. The society distributes resources via a mechanism based on economic principles. An implementation of the bandwidth market is presented in the form of an optimisation algorithm, followed by its application to several test networks. We show that, in the test networks examined, the optimisation algorithm reduces the network loss. For all test networks, the network loss achieved by the optimisation algorithm compares well with the network loss achieved by a centralised optimisation algorithm.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Verkeersingenieurswese bepaal die nodige bandwydtetoekenning om die verkeersvolume in 'n netwerk te dra. Op 'n soortgelyke wyse bepaal 'n ekonomiese mark die nodige hulpbrontoekenning om die aanvraag vir hulpbronne te bevredig. Die terme bandwydtemark stel verkeersingenieurswesetegnieke voor wat ekonomiese-mark metodes gebruik om die bandwydtetoekenning vir die verkeersvolume in 'n netwerk te bepaal. 'n Bandwydtemark is 'n aantreklike verkeersingenieurswesetegniek omdat dit verspreid van aard is en vinnig kan reageer op veranderinge in netwerk argitektuur en verkeersvolume. Netwerkterminologie word gereeld gebruik om bandwydtemarkte te definieer. Ons benadering is om mikro-ekonomiese begrippe te gebruik om 'n bandwydtemark te definieer. Die resultaat is dat ons bandwydtemarkte soortgelyk aan ekonomiese markte is, wat voordelig is vir die korrekte toepassing van ekonomiese beginsels. Hierdie tesis lê die teoretiese grondwerk vir twee bandwydtemarkte. Die eerste bandwydtemark is 'n raamwerk vir die ontwikkeling van bandwydtemarkte. Die tweede bandwydtemark stel 'n vereniging van samewerkende individue voor. Die vereniging versprei bandwydte deur middel van 'n meganisme wat gebasseer is op ekonomiese beginsels. 'n Implementasie van hierdie bandwydtemark word voorgestel in die vorm van 'n optimeringsalgoritme, gevolg deur die toepassing van die optimeringsalgoritme op 'n aantal toetsnetwerke. Abstract:
This article reviews the literature on networks and, more specifically, on the development of community telecommunication networks. It strives to understand the collaboration needed for innovative projects such as intelligent networks. Guided by a change management framework, collaboration within a community network is explored in terms of the formation and performance phases of its development. The context, content, and process of each phase is analyzed, as well as the interaction of the two phases. User involvement and technology appropriation are discussed. Collaboration challenges are identified and linked to the sustainability of the community network. Policy makers are presented with a model that gives some insight into planning and managing a community network over time.

Abstract:
The tremendous use of telecommunication services and the existence of various types of mobile devices and networks impose a huge need for a new technology that can integrate these devices and networks to provide adequate services and applications to satisfy the user’s needs. The new technology tries to eliminate all boundaries of telecommunications and leads to a universal approach that is able to demonstrate an easy and efficient technique to overcome all technical and managerial issues. This chapter, first, studies and analyzes the performance of existing mobile systems and their services and estimates the future aspects of next generation mobile communications. Second, a new approach is proposed and investigated. The new approach is based on using the abilities of satellite communications as part of the mobile communication systems. Such an approach introduces advanced communication solutions that could be set up anywhere/anytime subject to the existence of satellite coverage.

Abstract:
Computer simulation is becoming increasingly popular among computer network researchers for performance modeling and evaluation of computer and telecommunication networks. This popularity is due to the availability of various sophisticated and powerful simulators, and also because of the flexibility in model construction and validation offered by simulation. While various network simulators (both open source and commercial) exist for modeling and performance evaluation of communication networks, OPNET is becoming popular network simulator as the package is available to academic institutions at no cost, especially OPNET IT Guru. This chapter aims to provide a tutorial on OPNET focusing on the simulation and performance modeling of IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks (WLANs). Results obtained show that OPNET provides credible simulation results close to a real system.

Abstract:
With the advancement of technology, the dependency on the electrical energy has been increased greatly. Computer and telecommunication networks, railway network banking, post offices, and life support systems are a few applications that cannot function without electricity. At the same time, these applications demand qualitative energy. However, the quality of power supplied is affected by various internal and external factors of the power system. Harmonics, voltage, and frequency variations deteriorate the performance of the system. Voltage sag/dip is the most frequent problem and there are many methods to overcome this problem. The use of FACT devices is an efficient one. This chapter discusses an overview of the FACT device known as dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) in mitigating voltage sag. The strategy to control this device is also presented. The proposed control strategies are simulated in MATLAB SIMULINK environment and analyzed. The method is utilized and discussed briefly.

This popularity results from the availability of various sophisticated and powerful simulation software packages, and also because of the flexibility in model construction and validation offered by simulation. While various network simulators exist for building a variety of network models, choosing a good network simulator is very important in modeling and performance analysis of wireless networks. A good simulator is one that is easy to use; more flexible in model development, modification and validation; and incorporates appropriate analysis of simulation output data, pseudorandom number generators, and statistical accuracy of the simulation results. OMNeT++ is becoming one of the most popular network simulators because it has all the features of a good simulator. This chapter aims to provide a tutorial on OMNeT++ focusing on modeling and performance study of the IEEE 802.11g wireless network.
