Abstract:
The authors of this column, leading members of the International Neuman Systems Model Association, provide an update on the use of Neuman systems model in Holland and document the various changes in The Netherlands that have influenced the use of the model in that country. The model’s link to systems theory and stress theory are discussed, as well as a shift to greater emphasis on patient self-management. The model is also linked to healthcare quality improvement and interprofessional collaboration in Holland.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to describe aspects of optimal aging from the perspective of the Neuman systems model. An overview of the model is presented followed by a discussion of usual stressors encountered as people age and their common responses to these stressors. The position taken is that optimal aging for an individual is not necessarily equated with high-level wellness but rather is the best possible aging for that individual. A Neuman systems model practice methodology tool is used to illustrate how to apply the model to determine the optimal level of aging for individuals with and without chronic illnesses.

Full text
Abstract:
Patient simulation is an effective clinical nursing experience and debriefing is recognized as the most crucial phase for students to internalize learning. The Neuman systems model is an excellent organizing framework for simulation debriefing to maximize learning. However, due to the model’s complexity, metaphor may be useful to help students to link simulation events with the model’s concepts. A medieval metaphorical adaptation of the Neuman systems model was created as an educational debriefing tool to help students bridge this gap. Neuman’s concepts are represented as medieval figures encountering and dealing with stressor dragons, with assistance (nursing intervention) as necessary. The companion questionnaire allows recording of student insights and becomes an evaluation tool for student comprehension.

Abstract:
To determine the effect of the coping with depression program, based on the Neuman systems model, on the coping strategies, self-esteem, and depression levels of depressed patients, a randomized controlled study was conducted. Two groups—intervention and control—were formed in the study. For the intervention group, individual psychoeducation based on the Neuman systems model and involving cognitive behavioral therapy techniques (coping with depression program) was administered at six sessions. Psychoeducation based on the Neuman systems model was effective in decreasing the level of depression, increasing the level of self-esteem, increasing problem-solving skills, encouraging individuals to seek social support for coping strategies, and decreasing the use of avoidance strategy.

Full text
Abstract:
This article describes how the Neuman Systems Model (NSM) can be used in a two-step process to provide both the form and the function for interdisciplinary client care. The NSM proposes five dimensions of human experience as being necessary for a complete understanding of a client system. This article takes these five content areas—psychological, physiological, spiritual, developmental, and sociocultural—and extrapolates them to their respective disciplines (e.g. nursing, social work, religion, psychology, etc.) to create a comprehensive interdisciplinary model for client care. The NSM also provides a common language and conceptual paradigm, congruent with allied disciplines. A demonstration project incorporating the NSM in the formation and functioning of an interdisciplinary team is described.

Full text
Abstract:
The Neuman Systems Model was developed to create a structure to depict nursing clients as complex systems, in constant energy exchange with their environments, comprised of multiple interrelated parts. It has been widely used in practice, education, research, and administration. An analysis of the theory, based upon Meleis’ methods, was conducted. The theory has high utility and a large circle of contagiousness despite its complexity, lack of teleology, and level of abstractness. Based upon this analysis, a new model entitled the Neuman Systems Model Perspective of Nurse-Led Interprofessional Collaborative Practice has been created to provide a framework for the care of community-dwelling older adults. As a first step in its development, this new model will be used to guide a mixed-methods study evaluating an interprofessional collaborative practice intervention for community-dwelling older adults.

Abstract:
The purposes of this qualitative descriptive study were to explore the meaning of spirituality as described by aging adults in various states of health, to describe the relationship between spirituality and health, and to explain client expectations for healthcare providers related to spirituality. All identified meanings and themes were compared to the characteristics of spirituality proposed by Betty Neuman in the Neuman systems model to determine the credibility of the model for assessing and guiding holistic nursing practice. Three themes were formulated: a) Spirituality is an individual, conscious, committed connection to God, requiring a human response; b) positive spirituality contributes to personal wholeness and health; and c) spirituality sustains and comforts in times of stress.
