Abstract:
Von Neumann proved the minimax theorem (existence of a saddle-point solution to 2 person, zero sum games) in 1928. While his second article on the minimax theorem, stating the proof, has long been translated from German, his first announcement of his result (communicated in French to the Academy of Sciences in Paris by Borel, who had posed the problem settled by Von Neumann's proof) is translated here for the first time. The proof presented by Von Neumann and Morgenstern (1944) is not Von Neumann's rather involved proof of 1928, but is based on what they called "The Theorem of the Alternative for Matrices" which is in essence a reformulation of an elegant and elementary result by Borel's student Jean Ville in 1938. Ville's argument was the first to bring to light the simplifying role of convexity and to highlight the connection between the existence of minimax and the solvability of systems of linear inequalities. It by-passes nontrivial topological fixed point arguments and allows the treatment of minimax by simpler geometric methods. This approach has inspired a number of seminal contributions in convex analysis including fixed point and coincidence theory for set-valued mappings. Ville's contributions are discussed briefly and von Neuman's original communication, Ville's note, and Borel's commentary on it are translated here for the first time.

Abstract:
Iver Neumann has been an inter-disciplinary entrepreneur for political science in Norway. For Neumann, interdisciplinarity has been coupled with an understanding of politics as the search for meaning and identity. These features are well-developed in European political science, particularly within the field of international relations, but they are more rarely encountered in Norway. This brief article provides a sketch of political science as it evolved and matured in its Norwegian incarnation. In situating Iver Neumann within the discipline, I emphasise his international and eclectic orientation. The personal, national and international meet in Neumann’s works, as do popular culture and politics.

Abstract:
The ArgumentCarl Gottfried Neumann was born in Königsberg, Prussia, in 1832 and died in Leipzig in 1925. His father was the physicist Franz Neumann (1798–1895), notable for his contributions not only to the study of electricity and magnetism but also to the development of physics education in nineteenth-century Germany. Carl Neumann studied at the University of Königsberg and received his doctorate in 1855 with a work on the application of elliptic integrals to mechanics (Neumann 1856). In 1858 he became Privatdozent, and in 1863 Professor of Mathematics at Halle. Later that same year he moved to Basel, and in 1865 he became Ordinary Professor of Mathematics at Tübingen. Finally in 1868 he was appointed Professor of Mathematics at Leipzig, a post he held until he retired in 1911; of the two mathematics professorships at Leipzig, this was the one formerly held by F. A. Möbius, and it was officially devoted to “the higher mathematics, especially physics” (quoted in Jungnickel and McCormmach 1986, 1:181). So Neumann's academic career, along with his role as one of the founding editors of the Mathematische Annalen beginning in 1869, can be seen as reflecting the enormous advance in mathematical sophistication that German physics underwent in the latter part of the nineteenth century.

Abstract:
AbstractAround 1989, a striking letter written in March 1956 from Kurt Gödel to John von Neumann came to light. It poses some problems about the complexity of algorithms; in particular, it asks a question that can be seen as the first formulation of the P = ? NP question. This paper discusses some of the background to this letter, including von Neumann's own ideas on complexity theory. Von Neumann had already raised explicit questions about the complexity of Tarski's decision procedure for elementary algebra and geometry in a letter of 1949 to J. C. C. McKinsey. The paper concludes with a discussion of why theoretical computer science did not emerge as a separate discipline until the 1960s.

"Correspondences of von Neumann algebras." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/10323.

Full text
Abstract:
In the early 1980's, Alain Connes introduced a morphism between von Neumann algebras in order to define a property formerly defined only for groups and extending Kazhdan's property T. This morphism is called a correspondence. Let ${\cal M}$ and ${\cal N}$ be von Neumann algebras. A correspondence from ${\cal M}$ to ${\cal N}$ is a Hilbert space ${\cal H}$ which is an ${\cal N} - {\cal M}$ bimodule. Equivalently, a correspondence from ${\cal M}$ to ${\cal N}$ is a unital $\sp*$-representation of the algebraic tensor product ${\cal N} \odot\ {\cal M}\sp{o}$ which is normal when restricted to ${\cal N} \odot$ 1 and 1 $\odot\ {\cal M}\sp{o}$. In this thesis, we show that a correspondence is indeed a morphism between von Neumann algebras and we show its link to two other morphisms between von Neumann algebras: normal involutive algebra homomorphisms and completely positive normal linear maps. To achieve this objective, we study some important examples of von Neumann algebras and the Tomita-Takesaki theory.
