In this paper the following conjecture is studied: the group von Neumann algebra N(G) is a flat CG-module if and only if the group G is locally virtually cyclic. This paper proves that if G is locally virtually cyclic, then N(G) is flat as a CG-module. The converse is proved for the class of all elementary amenable groups without infinite locally finite subgroups. In this thesis are presented extensions to the theory of completely bounded operators and their relation to the Haagerup tensor product. The canonical map from the Haagerup tensor product of a von Neumann algebra with itself to the space of completely bounded operators on it is considered. A trace-like map on the space of completely bounded operators on the hyperfinite type II<SUB>1</SUB> factor is constructed and is shown to yield an estimate for the Jones index when applied to a conditional expectation.
