Abstract:
Objective: This article explores the life and career of Sebastian K. Littmann. He was a foundational figure of the University of Calgary’s Department of Psychiatry in his role as its second chair and, before this, as an influential administrator at Toronto’s Queen Street Mental Health Centre and Clarke Institute during a transitional period in the 1970s-1980s. According to McGill University’s Heinz Lehmann, this transitional period was when the field of psychiatry underwent an identity crisis that threatened to dissolve the discipline and see its functions increasingly filled by counsellors, neurologists, and primary physicians. Littmann’s professional background and training in Edinburgh was followed by periods of community work in New York, which—by the time he immigrated to Canada—predisposed him to favour a humane and community-based approach to psychiatric work; this approach encompassed the cultural variations that were increasingly characterizing North America’s urban social landscape. His compassionate and progressive approach to treatment was remarkable in light of his troubled and deprived upbringing in Nazi-era Germany. Conclusions: The present sketch of Littmann’s personal and professional biography serves to highlight the ways that major historical events and large-scale migration movements, which affected Central Europe, impacted the development of Canadian psychiatry and, by extension, individual Canadians in the twentieth century.

Abstract:
The article is dedicated to the memory of a Russian scientist, doctor, teacher, dean of the Faculty of Pediatrics, who stood at the origins of perinatal medicine from the standpoint of an innovative approach in diagnosis, therapy, prevention and training of future doctors. The aim of the article is to study the biography of the outstanding Russian scientist Maria Fedorovna Deshchekina, from the standpoint of a significant contribution to perinatal medicine. In the course of writing the article, comparative historical and analytical methods of historical and medical research were used using archival data from the 4th maternity hospital on Novatorov Street, house 3, Moscow, where Maria Fedorovna worked, memories of colleagues, students and relatives. The main results are the presentation of modern achievements in pediatrics on the foundations laid by Maria Fedorovna, who has high professionalism and innovative approaches. Medicine of the XXI century opens up wide opportunities in forecasting, prevention, therapy and rehabilitation. The modern stage of medical science development is based on powerful technological progress, advanced pharmacological research, breakthroughs in the field of genetics and nanotechnology. But behind the high achievements of the present are our dear Teachers, who laid the foundation for the future of medicine with their high professionalism. We should not lose these classical views, works, and approaches. The life and fate of the outstanding Russian doctor Maria Fedorovna Deshchekina is a vivid example of loyalty to the profession and service to people. In 2022, on the centennial anniversary of her birth, a conference was held and a book dedicated to the memory of Maria Fedorovna, a unique doctor, scientist, teacher, organizer, was published at the Federal State Educational Institution of the Russian Ministry of Health named after N.I. Pirogov. The founder of the conference is a student of Maria Fedorovna - Ilyenko Lidiya Ivanovna. Maria Fyodorovna’s life is closely connected with the 2nd MOLGMI (the Federal State Educational Institution of the Russian Ministry of Health named after N.I. Pirogov), the Department of Hospital Pediatrics and Maternity hospital No. 4. Moscow. She went from student to professor, head of the department, dean of the Pediatric Faculty. The results of her activities have developed into a certain concept, which we still adhere to. As Dean, Maria Fedorovna proved herself to be a talented teacher, psychologist and organizer, paying great attention to improving the pedagogical skills of teachers. It was during this period that methodological work was elevated to the rank of scientific and methodological, which led to a series of articles written in collaboration with the Department of Pedagogy. Neonatologists, obstetricians-gynecologists, neurologists and pediatricians know the name of Maria Fedorovna well, since she first described somatic manifestations of birth trauma and presented them in the form of syndromes. This classification is still in effect today and greatly facilitates the diagnosis. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that the name of Maria Fedorovna Deshchekina is associated with many innovations that later became traditional for Russian pediatrics.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The current war against Ukraine awakened the wish to look over Adler’s shoulder during World War I, when he served as a military neurologist. The literature review revealed an obituary on Adler written by Dr. Maksymilian Blassberg that provides some interesting details about Adler’s service at Kraków’s military hospital, which, in the context of existing field letters written by Adler, allows one to fill in some missing links and to draw a psycho biography of Adler during this difficult time. The parallels of his life stimulate us to think about the dangers and conditions of today’s wars.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to review the life of Mary E. O'Sullivan and to summarize her important contributions to the study of migraine. Mary E. O'Sullivan underwent extensive training to become a neurologist at a time when only 5% of women in America were physicians. She published five papers on migraine. In a 1936 Journal of the American Medical Association article, she described a patient with ergotamine overuse headache and recommended that daily doses of oral ergotamine should be avoided. Three years later she described migraine as a ‘complex’ syndrome with multiple causes and multiple cures. Mary E. O'Sullivan, an ambitious female headache specialist of the 1930s, was an early advocate of the use of ergotamine to treat migraine, yet she was one of the first to report ergotamine overuse headache. Although her life was short, her research, knowledge and ambition at a time when women had limited opportunities in medicine have left a mark.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the public and political activity of Amet Ozenbashly who was one of the leaders of the Crimean Tatar national movement in the first half of the XX century. His public activity during the period of the national liberation movement (1917-1920) is characterized in the article. Amet Ozenbashly’s participation in convening and conducting the Constituent Assembly of the Crimean Tatar nation (the first Kurultai), his activity within the Directory and the Central Committee of the Crimean Tatar national party “Milliy Fyrqa” is also emphasized in the work. A. Ozenbashly didn’t immigrate after the defeat of the national revolution. At the beginning of the 1920s he participated in the establishment of the Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic and was the member of its Central Executive Committee. He also held the position of the headmaster in the Crimean pedagogical college, the Deputy People’s Commissar of Finance; he practiced as a neurologist in Simferopil and was engaged in the literature activity. He was repressed in 1928. He was sentenced to death but his verdict was changed to 10 years of imprisonment. He was released from prison prematurely in 1934. A. Ozenbashly’s activity during the period of the German occupation is characterized in the study. He wrote the memorandum about the collaboration with the German although the document was not manifested. He made covert public statements against the collaboration with the German. He urged the Crimean Tatars to choose the third way (neither Hitlerism nor Stalinism) and value their own national interests above all. Because of risk of being arrested he had to hide. According to H. Porokhovsky’s (the former colonel of the UNR army, the leader of the Ukrainian military emigration in Romania, the employee of the Romanian special information service) archive-investigation file A. Ozenbashly moved to Odesa and then to Romania with his assistance. Being in this Balkan country he established linkages with the leaders of the Crimean Tatar emigration in Turkey, helped the refugees from the Crimea to settle in Romania and got ready to move to Istanbul. However he was arrested and repressed by the Soviet intelligence agency for the second time in spring 1945. Key words: Amet Ozenbashly, the Crimea, the Crimean Tatars, Milliy Fyrqa, Romania, Hnat Porokhovsky.

Abstract:
IntroductionJohn Farquhar Fulton was an American neurophysiologist and historian, who pioneered psychosurgery based on animal experiments. Together with psychologist Carlyle Jacobsen, Fulton presented the results of bilateral frontal lobe ablation in chimpanzees. This study prompted neurologist Egas Moniz and neurologist Walter Freeman to perform similar brain surgery on human subjects.ObjectivesTo present the scientific papers of John Farquhar Fulton on psychosurgery.AimsTo review available literature and to show evidence that John Farquhar Fulton made a significant contribution to the development of psychosurgery.MethodsA biography and research papers are presented and discussed.ResultsFulton and Jacobsen experimented with ‘delayed response tasks’ in chimpanzees. The aim was to test the animal's capability to memorize the correct location of the food. They found that after sequential ablations of the left and right frontal association cortices these memory tasks became significantly difficult for the monkeys to perform. The researchers saw parallel conclusions in clinical cases of human frontal lobe damage.ConclusionsAn investigation into the role of the limbic system is one of the crowning achievements of John Farquhar Fulton, as this has influenced even today's thinking about the role of the limbic system. We should thank Fulton for his pioneering work as modern psychosurgery has gradually evolved from irreversible ablation to reversible stimulation techniques, including deep brain stimulation.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract:
Background: Robert Wartenberg, a European-American neurologist, was born in 1887 and died in 1956. His description of radial sensory nerve compression at the forearm is memorialized as Wartenberg’s syndrome. He recognized that involuntary abduction of the little finger could be caused by ulnar nerve palsy - a finding often called Wartenberg’s sign Syndrome and signs are reviewed, and a brief biography is presented. Objective: To review Wartenberg’s sign and Wartenberg’s syndrome. Discussion: Compression of the superficial branch of the radial nerve, often called Wartenberg’s syndrome, is characterized by pain, paresthesia, and dysesthesia along the dorsoradial distal forearm. Non-operative treatment can include activity restriction and anti-inflammatory medication. If symptoms persist, surgical decompression of the radial nerve is an option. The abducted posture of the little finger - Wartenberg’s sign - can result from a low ulnar nerve palsy. Tendon transfer can be performed to correct this deformity. Conclusion: Compression of the superficial branch of the radial nerve and abducted posture of the little finger were described by Robert Wartenberg and carry his name as eponymous syndrome and sign, respectively.
