A series of experiments was performed with the Texas A&M University Nuclear
Science Center Reactor (NSCR) to verify ²³⁵U delayed neutron emission rates. A
custom device was created to accurately measure a sample's pneumatic flight time and
the Nuclear Science Center's (NSC's) pneumatic transfer system (PTS) was redesigned
to reduce a sample's pneumatic flight time from over 1,600 milliseconds to less than 450
milliseconds. Four saturation irradiations were performed at reactor powers of 100 and
200 kW for 300 seconds and one burst irradiation was performed using a $1.61 pulse
producing 19.11 MW-s of energy.
Experimental results agreed extremely well with those of Keepin. By comparing
the first ten seconds of collected data, the first saturation irradiation deviated ~1.869%
with a dead time of 2 microseconds, while the burst irradiation deviated ~0.303% with a
dead time of 5 microseconds. Saturation irradiations one, three and four were
normalized to the initial count rate of saturation irradiation two to determine the system
reproducibility, and deviated ~0.449%, ~0.343% and ~0.389%, respectively.

This thesis addresses the application of fusion as a powerful source of energetic neutrons. The conditions for maximising fusion power density, Pf, in a neutral beam fuelled plasma are determined and used to inform a high Pf device optimisation procedure. Restrictions on the externally applied power, not previously considered, are shown to be a crucial factor in determining the optimum plasma and reactor conditions. Two distinct regimes of operation exist, separated by a discontinuity in the optimum conditions. In one regime, beam-on-target reactions dominate and Pf is maximised when operating with a pure tritium target plasma. The optimum confinement is lower than that required for high gain operation but the energy multiplication is limited to Qf~1. Fast alpha particles, if confined, reduce Pf by a factor (1+0.2Qf)^-1, but leave Qf unchanged. In the second regime, thermonuclear reactions make a significant contribution to Pf, allowing for higher energy gain but requiring improved confinement. Alpha particle heating reduces Pf by around 20% but increases Qf. By considering established tokamak stability constraints the optimum plasma conditions are used to inform a high Pf device design. The model provides a framework for simplifying and informing what would otherwise be a perplexing search for the optimal reactor configuration and allows areas of particular interest to high Pf operation to be identified. A novel tokamak operating regime - the isothermal tokamak - is investigated. An analytic equilibrium is derived and the resulting density and current profiles found to be notably different from those of a conventional device. A model of the anomalous transport due to the trapped electron mode instability is derived. Simultaneous solutions to the MHD and transport equilibria are shown to only exist for relatively shallow density profiles.

There are a lot of definitions of cancer: in a few words one could say that it represents
a group of diseases characterized by the growth and uncontrolled diffusion
of abnormal cells. Considering the number of deaths at the world level in 2005
(50 millions), cancer is responsible of 7.6 millions (that is 13%) with an expected
increase to 11.4 millions in 2030. The innovations in the field of radiotherapy,
chemotherapy, surgery and their combined applications have allowed to maintain
these numbers under control.
Radiation therapy has been used for the treatment of cancer and other diseases
for approximately 100 years. As early as 1897, two years after the discovery by
Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen, it was concluded that X-rays could be used for therapeutic
as well as diagnostic purposes. But nearly 30 years were necessary to make
radiotherapy world wide diffused: in fact, X-rays moved into clinical therapeutic
routine only in the early 1920s.
Since the first uses of radiation to treat cancer, important changes have been made
in this field and several developments have been accomplished, both from the instrumental
(new types of linear accelerators to generate higher energy radiation
beams) and medical (different types of ionizing radiation and progress in treatment
planning) points of view.
On the other hand there is a series of tumours whose survival curve has not varied
in time both in absolute and incremental terms: extended tumours (such as the
ones of stomach, liver and lung), tumours localized near or in vital organs (such
as the glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) in the brain), radioresistant tumours (such
as melanoma). The research for new ways of treatment, together with the discovery
of neutrons in 1932 and the studies concerning their properties, inspired in
the American biophysicist G. L. Locher in 1936 the attempt to use neutron beams
in radiotherapy in the so-called NCT (Neutron Capture Therapy) first and BNCT
(Boron Neutron Capture Therapy) then. BNCT could (and the conditional is a
must) represent a hope for all the cases still lacking a survival improvement.
BNCT is a technique that in principle joins the localization capability of radiotherapy
and the specificity of chemotherapy, allowing a selective release of the
dose only to cancer cells, without damaging the surrounding healthy tissues. This
technique is based on the irradiation with thermal and epithermal neutrons of a
boronated compound (the so called carrier) selectively concentrated in tumor cells.
Following the capture of a neutron, the 10B isotope emits high LET particles (an
and a 7Li ion) that release their whole energy in the cell where the boron atom
was present at the moment of the irradiation.
The first BNCT experimental treatments were performed during the '50s. Since
then, BNCT has met ups and downs in its history because of a physical and a biological
reason: from the physical point of view, the features of the neutron beam
(a flux >5 X 108 n cm-2 s-1 with an energy <10 keV) identify nuclear reactors
as the only adequate sources; from the biological point of view, the carriers that
bring the 10B inside the cell are not selective but exploit the greater metabolism
of the cancer cells with respect to the healthy ones. BNCT has been performed
in nuclear reactors in the United States (MIT, WSU), in Japan (KURRI, JRR-4),
in Argentina (RA-6), in Europe (JRC - the Netherlands, Medical AB - Sweden,
FiR1 - Finland) for activities of Phase I (toxicity) and of Phase II (ef_cacy); no
center has started a Phase III protocol (BNCT tests randomized with respect to the
standard techniques). Possible patients for BNCT treatments have to submit the
request for the therapy to the International Ethic Committee who analyzes all the
other possibilities before agreeing to a non standard treatment, a fact which limits
the number of patients and thus the available statistics.
To understand completely the impact and the advantages of BNCT with respect to
other techniques, it is necessary to study the boron concentration, its sub-cellular
distribution, its fixation molecular sites, its transport and its exchange dynamics
in several biological samples, possibly in a user friendly environment, easily accessible
and with a low photon or particle background. In other words, one of the
main tasks for the BNCT development in terms of clinical treatments is the study
of the pharmacokinetics of the carrier. This requires the development of reliable
methods for monitoring the boron concentration in healthy and tumour cells. This
study has to proceed in parallel with the design of in-hospital radiation sources.
The project of a treatment plan involves the work of medical doctors, oncologists,
biology and chemistry experts, physicists; the work of such a pool of people is
not easy to organize outside the hospital in a complicated environment such as the
one of a nuclear reactor. Moreover, also the test of new carriers or the trials on
new organs have to be inserted in the schedule of a reactor increasing times and
costs.
This thesis locates itself in the field of BNCT facing both the problems that still
limit its becoming a standard therapy. The work has been performed both at a
nuclear reactor and in a hospital environment collaborating with some of the most
important groups in Italy involved with BNCT.
The first chapter focuses on what cancer is, how it develops and how it can be
cured summarizing the three main treatment modalities (surgery, chemotherapy
and radiotherapy) and analyzing the brain cancer as an example of an illness still
without hope. The last part of the chapter concerns the rationale of BNCT, whose
ingredients are described in detail in chapter 2, which focuses both on the boron
carrier and the neutron beam.
Chapter 3 summarizes the features of a nuclear reactor neutron beam for BNCT,
describing the instruments and the procedure to characterize such a beam. In
particular, the chapter focuses on the measurements performed on the epithermal
column of the TAPIRO reactor (ENEA, Casaccia, Italy) with thermoluminescent
detectors. The data taking and analysis procedure are described in detail in order
to give an idea of the pros and cons of such non real time detectors.
Chapter 4 moves in the opposite direction, considering the development of a hospital
based BNCT beam both from the industrial point of view (presenting as an
example the proton + Li target accelerator proposed by IBA) and the completely
different approach of the PhoNeS (ProtoNeutron Source) project, which exploits
a standard radiotherapy linac producing neutrons via the Giant Dipole Resonance.
The chapter describes in detail the PhoNeS prototype and the measurements to
characterize the beam, presenting real time and innovative systems that can be
used thanks to the pulsed nature of the linac beam which allows to work in a
background free environment. The last part of the chapter is dedicated to the
application of this beam to the study of the boron concentration in biological samples
(urine and blood) to obtain the kinetic curves (that is the boron concentration
as a function of the time from the administration) for patients undergoing BNCT
treatments. This same .imaging system. has been applied to the study of another
possible organ that could bene_t of BNCT, that is the lung.

Les étoiles à neutrons sont des objets denses qui sont produits dans des explosions de supernova à effondrement de coeur. Pour la modélisation de la supernova et du refroidissement de l'étoile à neutrons, les taux d'absorption, d'émission et de diffusion des neutrinos jouent un rôle crucial. Dans une grande partie de ces systèmes astrophysiques, les noyaux sont complètement dissous. Dans ce cas, les taux de neutrinos peuvent être directement liés aux fonctions de réponse de la matière nucléaire, calculées aux densités, asymétries et températures correspondantes. Cette thèse développe d'abord le modèle de l'approximation des phases aléatoires (RPA) pour les fonctions de réponse avec les interactions effectives de Skyrme dans la matière nucléaire asymétrique pour des transferts d'énergie finis, et établit un lien entre le taux de diffusion des neutrinos et les fonctions de réponse. Ensuite, la dépendance en énergie et angle des taux de diffusion des neutrinos dans la matière de proto-étoile à neutrons et de supernova sont étudiés dans le cadre du modèle Skyrme-RPA. De nombreuses interactions antérieures de Skyrme prédisent que la vitesse de Fermi des neutrons dépasse la vitesse de la lumière à des densités que les étoiles à neutrons peuvent atteindre. Pour résoudre ce problème et poursuivre le calcul des taux de neutrinos pour les simulations astrophysiques à des densités élevées à l'aide de la théorie fonctionnelle de Skyrme, nous explorons ensuite la construction de nouvelles fonctionnelles de Skyrme. Les paramétrisations Sky1 et Sky2 sont obtenues en incluant des contraintes provenant de calculs microscopiques de la masse effective en plus des énergies de liaison et des rayons de charge de noyaux finis et de différentes équations d'état microscopiques de la matière de neutrons. Pour vérifier si les nouvelles paramétrisations conviennent à la description des noyaux finis et de la matière des étoiles à neutrons, nous calculons les propriétés des noyaux finis et de la matière nucléaire infinie, y compris la matière des étoiles à neutrons, et les présentons dans cette thèse. De plus, nous considérons l'interaction de Skyrme comme une fonctionnelle de la densité plutôt qu'une force à deux corps dépendant de la densité, afin d'explorer la détermination des termes dépendant du spin des nouvelles fonctionnelles de Skyrme. Les paramètres des termes dépendant du spin sont déterminés en ajustant les paramètres de Landau G_0 et G’_0 dans la matière de neutrons et dans la matière nucléaire symétrique aux résultats de la théorie microscopique de Brueckner-Hartree-Fock. Enfin, nous développons un protocole d'ajustement amélioré pour les nouvelles forces de Skyrme en ajoutant d'autres contraintes, telles que l'équation d'état de la matière nucléaire symétrique à haute densité, l'apparition d'instabilités non-physiques dans le canal de spin-0, et la différence entre les masses effectives des nucléons de spin up et de spin down dans la matière polarisée, afin d'obtenir de meilleures nouvelles fonctionnelles, Sky3s et Sky4s. Les fonctions de réponse et les taux de diffusion des neutrinos de la matière d'étoile à neutrons peuvent être calculés avec les nouvelles fonctionnelles ayant des masses effectives et paramètres de Landau réalistes<br>Neutron stars are dense objects that are produced in core collapse supernova explosions. For the modeling of the supernova and of the subsequent cooling of the neutron star, neutrino absorption, emission, and scattering rates play a crucial role. In a large part of these astrophysical systems, nuclei are completely dissolved. Then the neutrino rates can be directly related to the response functions of nuclear matter, computed at the relevant density, asymmetry, and temperature. This thesis develops first the random-phase approximation (RPA) model for the response functions with Skyrme effective interactions in asymmetric nuclear matter and finite energy transfer, and relates the neutrino scattering rate to the response functions. Then, the energy and angle dependence of neutrino scattering rates in proto-neutron star and supernova matter within Skyrme RPA are studied. Many previous Skyrme interactions predict that neutron Fermi velocity exceeds the speed of light at densities that neutron stars can reach. To solve this problem and continue the computation of neutrino rates for astrophysical simulations at high densities using Skyrme functional theory, we then explore the construction of the new Skyrme functionals. Sky1 and Sky2 are obtained by including constraints from microscopic calculations of the effective mass in addition to binding energies and charge radii of finite nuclei and different microscopic equations of state of pure neutron matter. To test whether they are suitable for describing finite nuclei and neutron star matter, we compute properties of finite nuclei and infinite nuclear matter, including neutron star matter, and present them in this thesis. Also, we consider the Skyrme interaction as a density-functional rather than a density-dependent two-body force to explore the determination of the spin-dependent terms of the new Skyrme functionals. The parameters of the spin-dependent terms are determined by fitting the Landau parameters G_0 and G’_0 in neutron matter and symmetric nuclear matter to the results of the microscopic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory. Finally, we develop the improved fitting protocol for the new Skyrme forces by adding other constraints, such as the equation of state of symmetric nuclear matter at high density, the onset of the spurious instability in the spin-0 channel, the splitting between the spin up and down nucleon effective masses in the polarized matter, obtaining better new functionals, Sky3s and Sky4s. The response functions and neutrino scattering rates of neutron-star matter can be computed with the new functionals having realistic effective masses and Landau parameters

Aquesta tesi presenta el desenvolupament de sensors avançats de silici fabricats al IMB-CNM per aplicacions en detecció de neutrons i per mesures microdosimètriques en feixos de teràpia amb hadrons.
La precisa detecció de neutrons es de gran interès en la comunitat mèdica, en seguretat nacional i en molts altres camps com la ciència de materials o l’exploració de l’espai. Donat el seu efecte biològic, la detecció de neutrons es essencial per controlar, per exemple, el flux de neutrons produïts durant els tractament de radioteràpia o hadronteràpia i minimitzar així el risc de contraure tumors secundaris induïts per la radiació. A més a més, per seguretat nacional, la detecció de neutrons es imprescindible per reduir amenaces radio-biològiques ja que, els materials que poden ser utilitzats per construir armes nuclears o bombes brutes, son fonts d’emissió de neutrons. Aquestes aplicacions es basen actualment en detectors gasosos d’heli-3 però, degut a la escassetat d’aquest gas, en un futur pròxim una tecnologia substitutòria per a la detecció de neutrons es necessària.
Els sensors presentat en aquesta tesi per a la detecció de neutrons són: l’ultra prim 3D (U3DTHIN) i el micro-estructurat (MS), cobert i omplert respectivament amb un material convesor. Els sensors U3DTHIN són nomes de 10 or 20 µm de gruix, permetent un alt rebuig als rajos gamma, propietat necessària per discriminar la senyal deguda als neutrons en un medi mixt amb rajos gamma. Els sensors MS consisteixen en una formació de micro-canals gravats dins el silici i omplerts amb un material conversor. Aquests detectors proporcionen un augment en la eficiència de detecció degut a la major àrea de contacte entre el volum sensible de silici i el material convesor.
La teràpia amb hadrons es un tipus en expansió de radiació externa per tractar el càncer utilitzant feixos protons o ions pesats. La posada en marxa d’aquests tipus de feixos, per obtenir un tractament més precís, requereix una caracterització completa de la qualitat de la radiació, és a dir, tipus de partícula i espectre d’energia, que resulta de mesures microdosimètriques. Per a la realització d’aquestes mesures, els sensors presentats en aquesta tesis són els U3DTHIN i els microdosimetres 3D cilíndrics. Els U3DTHIN, ja introduïts per a la detecció de neutrons també s’utilitzen per tals mesures a causa del seu petit gruix, mentre que els microdosimetres cilíndrics van ser específicament fabricats per mesures microdosimètriques. Aquesta nova generació de dispositius consisteix en una matriu de micro-sensors amb elèctrodes cilíndrics que permeten un ben definit volum micromètric sensible a la radiació.
La investigació presentada en aquest treball inclou els processos de fabricació dels sensors, la seva caracterització elèctrica, les simulacions GEANT4 per optimitzar els dissenys i per validar resultats i els tests experimentals realitzats en diferents instal·lacions d’irradiació.<br>This thesis presents the development of advanced silicon sensors fabricated at IMB-CNM for neutron detection applications and for microdosimetry measurements of hadron therapy ion beams.
The accurate detection of neutrons has great interest for the medical community, for homeland security and for many other different fields such as material science or space exploration. Given their biological effect, neutron detection is essential to control, for example, the neutron flux produced during a radiotherapy or hadrontherapy treatment to minimize the patient's risk of secondary radiation-induced tumours. Moreover, for national security purposes, neutron detection is crucial to elude radiological threats since the nuclear materials, that could be used to assemble nuclear weapons or dirty bombs, are a significant source of fission neutrons. These applications mostly rely on 3He gas proportional counters but due to the shortage of this gas, a replacement technology for neutron detection is required in the near future.
The presented sensors in this thesis for neutron detection are the ultra-thin 3D (U3DTHIN) and the microstructured (MS) sensors, which are covered and filled respectively, with a thermal neutron converter material. The U3DTHIN sensors are only 10 or 20 µm thick, allowing for a high gamma rejection, which is necessary to discriminate the signal coming from the neutrons in a mixed neutron-gamma ray environment. The MS sensors consist of an array of microchannels etched inside the silicon bulk and filled with a converter material. They lead to an improvement of the neutron detection efficiency due to the increased contact area between the silicon sensitive volume and the converter material.
Hadron therapy is an expanding branch of external radiation therapy for treating cancer using protons or heavy ion beams. The commissioning of such beams, to lead to a more accurate treatment plan, requires a complete characterization of the radiation quality (i.e. particle types and their energy spectra) that results from microdosimetric measurements. To perform these measurements, the presented sensors in this thesis are the U3DTHIN and the 3D cylindrical microdosimeter. The U3DTHIN, already introduced for neutron detection, is also used for such measurements due to its thin thickness, while the 3D cylindrical microdosimeter was manufactured specifically for microdosimetry measurements. This new generation device consists of an array of micro-sensors that have 3D-cylindrical electrodes resulting in a well-defined micrometric radiation sensitive volume.
The research presented in this work includes the fabrication processes of the sensors, their electrical characterization, the GEANT4 simulations to optimize the designs and to validate the experimental results and the experimental tests performed at different irradiation facilities.

L'objectif de cette thèse est d'explorer les mécanismes d'émission des neutrons émis lors du processus de la fission. En particulier, la question ouverte de l'existence d'une anisotropie dynamique dans le centre de masse des fragments de fission et/ou de la possibilité d'une émission de neutrons de scission est explorée. La thèse débute par une introduction aux concepts théoriques permettant de décrire les processus de fission et les mécanismes d'émission de neutrons. La nécessité de concevoir une méthode d'analyse appropriée pour caractériser des mécanismes très subtiles est discutée, en insistant sur l'importance de maîtriser les biais expérimentaux. Le travail effectué a exigé un effort important de simulation, à travers le développement d'une procédure Monte Carlo pour décrire la fission spontanée du 252Cf, ainsi qu'une modélisation du dispositif expérimental de l'expérience CORA3.Nous proposons pour la première fois une approche simultanée et indépendante des deux mécanismes, émission de scission et anisotropie dynamique, ainsi que des valeurs quantitatives d'anisotropie et d'émission de scission mesurées expérimentalement<br>The subject of this thesis is to explore the neutron emission mechanisms in the fission process. In particular a long standing open question, the existence of a dynamical anisotropy in the centre of mass of the fission fragments and/or a possible scission neutron emission is explored. We consider a schematic semi-analytical model for the dynamical calculation of collapse-explosion leading to the formation and composition of protoneutron stars. Hadron to quark phase transition is included in a scenario where neutrinos are trapped and interactions among hadrons as well as among quarks are taken into account. The main appeal of the model, besides its simplicity, is that it gives a quantitatively accurate description of all global features of the process such as ejected mass, the energy of the nascent shock wave, the mass and radius of the remnant core. We present the time evolution of the system during the collapse-explosion process and we conclude that the formation of a hybrid remnant core is inhibited by neutrino trapping at the onset of the core bounce.<br>Consideramos um modelo semi-analítico esquemático para o cálculo dinâmico de um processo de colapso-explosão que conduz à formação e composição de proto-estrelas de nêutrons. A transição de fase hádrons-quarks é incluída em um cenário onde neutrinos são confinados e interações entre hádrons, como também, entre quarks são levadas em conta. A atração principal do modelo, além de sua simplicidade, é que ele fornece uma descrição precisa quantitativa de características globais do processo tais como: massa ejetada, energia da onda de choque nascente, massa e raio do caroço remanescente. Apresentamos a evolução temporal do sistema durante o processo de colapso-explosão e concluímos que a formação de um caroço remanescente híbrido é inibida pelo confinamento dos neutrinos durante o bounce do caroço.

L’expérience Double Chooz, située sur le site de la centrale nucléaire de Chooz dans la région des Ardennes en France, étudie la disparition des antineutrinos. Le but principal de l’expérience est de mesurer avec une grande précision l’amplitude d’oscillation sin2 2θ13 des antineutrinos émis par les deux réacteurs de la centrale de Chooz. La précision de cette mesure dépend fortement d’une connaissance précise des taux et de la forme des spectres des bruits de fond qui contaminent la sélection finale des antineutrinos en particulier dans la gamme d’énergie où l’oscillation des neutrinos est attendue. Nous avons étudié dans la présente thèse le bruit de fond d’origine cosmique dans l’expérience Double Chooz. En effet, les muons cosmiques traversant les détecteurs ou interagissant dans le voisinage immédiat sont la principale source de bruit de fond observés dans l’expérience Double Chooz. Deux types de bruits de fonds sont analysés et présentes dans cette thèse : les neutrons rapides (FN) et la double capture de neutrons (DnC). Des techniques d’identification dédiées ont été développées pour chacun de ces bruits de fond et, par conséquent, les formes spectrales et les taux associés ont été́ déterminés. Les valeurs obtenues dans le cadre de ce travail servent de paramètres d’entrée dans le fit final d’où la valeur de θ13 est extraite. La dernière mesure publiée par la collaboration Double Chooz est sin2 2θ13 = 0.119 ± 0.016<br>The Double Chooz experiment is- a reactor antineutrino disappearance experiment located on the site of the Chooz nuclear power plant in the Ardennes region in France. The principal aim of the experiment is a high precision measurement of the oscillation amplitude sin2 2θ13 of the antineutrinos emitted from the two reactor cores of the Chooz power plant. The robustness and accuracy of this measurement depends strongly on a precise knowledge of the rates and spectral shapes of the backgrounds that contaminate the antineutrinos selection over the neutrino oscillation expected region. We have studied in the present thesis the muon induced background in the Double Chooz experiment. Indeed, cosmic muons crossing the detectors or interacting in the neighborhood constitute the main source of background events encountered in Double Chooz. Two distinct backgrounds analysis are presented in this thesis: fast neutrons (FN) and double capture of neutrons (DnC). Dedicated identification techniques have been developed for each of these backgrounds and, consequently, the associated spectral shapes and rates have been determined. The values obtained in this work serve as inputs in the final fit whence the θ13 value is extracted.The latest measurement released by the Double Chooz collaboration is sin2 2θ13 = 0.119 ± 0.016$

L'etude porte sur les multicouches nickel/titane, appelees supermiroirs, et utilisees dans les guides de neutrons. Elles permettent, par l'augmentation de la valeur de l'angle critique apparent de reflexion totale, d'accroitre la transmission des guides. Nous avons mis au point une nouvelle technique de caracterisation des supermiroirs: la multireflexion de neutrons. Elle permet d'obtenir rapidement une grande precision sur la mesure du plateau de reflexion totale et de son extension. Nous avons montre que l'addition d'azote dans le nickel permet d'augmenter la valeur de la densite de longueur de diffusion coherente par rapport au nickel pur, ce qui augmente le pouvoir reflecteur de ce materiau. L'addition de carbone dans le nickel diminue la taille des grains, contribuant ainsi a la diminution des rugosites d'interfaces. Afin d'estimer la duree de vie des guides, des echantillons de une, deux, quatre et vingt couches ont ete irradies par des neutrons thermiques et rapides, sous differentes fluences. Sur plusieurs echantillons, les effets suivants ont ete observes: endommagement de la couche de surface, restauration du nickel et evolution de la structure du titane. Cependant, les proprietes reflechissantes des supermiroirs ne sont pas diminuees sous irradiation. L'interpretation proposee pour expliquer l'evolution du titane est une transformation de la phase hexagonale compacte du titane pur, vers une phase tih de structure cubique a faces centrees de parametre a=4,38 angstroms. Cette interpretation explique la plupart des observations experimentales obtenues par reflectivite de neutrons, diffraction x, exafs, microscopie electronique en transmission haute resolution (modes image et diffraction). Certains resultats de cette etude ont ete utilises pour la realisation des deux premiers guides de neutrons en supermiroirs au laboratoire leon brillouin. Les resultats des mesures de flux montrent que l'utilisation des supermiroirs permet d'obtenir un gain d'un facteur deux par rapport au meme guide uniquement revetu de nickel

Through simulation one can optimize the detector environment to best correspond with the needs for a specific experiment. In this project, a detector environment is simulated, consisting of a neutron and gamma point source and one detector for each type of particle. The simulated results were in good agreement with the underlying theory and the simulation can, therefore, be used in future work.

The UCNA Experiment at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) is the first measurement of the β-decay asymmetry parameter A0 using polarized ultracold neutrons (UCN). A0 , which represents the parity-violating angular correlation between the direction of the initial neutron spin and the emitted decay electron’s momentum, determines λ = gA /gV , the ratio of the weak axial-vector and vector coupling constants. A high-precision determination of λ is important for weak interaction physics, and when combined with the neutron lifetime it permits an extraction of the CKM matrix element Vud solely from neutron decay. At LANSCE, UCN are produced in a pulsed, spallation driven solid deuterium source and then polarized via transport through a 7 T magnetic field. Their spins can then be flipped via transport through an Adiabatic Fast Passage spin flipper located in a low-field-gradient 1 T field region prior to transport to a decay storage volume situated within a 1 T solenoidal spectrometer. Electron detector packages located at each end of the spectrometer provide for the measurement of decay electrons. Previous UCNA results (based on data collected in 2010 and earlier) were limited by systematic uncertainties, in particular those from the UCN polarization, calibration of the electron energy, electron backscattering, and angular acceptance of events. This dissertation will present a background of neutron decay, an overview of the UCNA Experiment, followed by a detailed report on the entire analysis process for data acquired during run periods in 2011-2012 and 2012-2013.

Ces tests ont montré que l'affinement joint permet de retrouver les résultats des différents affinements séparés mais aussi d'aller plus loin en autorisant un affinement de la densité de spin avec plus de paramètres pertinents. Suite à ces premiers tests nous nous sommes intéressés à un complexe azido cuivre (Cu2L2(N3)2 avec L=1,1,1-trifluoro-7-(dimethylamino)-4-méthyle-5-aza-3-heptène-2-onato). Cette these s'inscrit dans le cadre du projet de recherche et developpement parrne (production d'atomes radioactifs riches en neutrons) qui consiste a explorer experimentalement la fission de l'uranium 238 induite par des neutrons rapides comme mode de production en vue de realiser des faisceaux d'isotopes radioactifs riches en neutrons. Le flux de neutrons rapides est produit par l'arret d'un faisceau de deutons dans un convertisseur. Des cibles epaisses de carbures d'uranium et d'uranium liquide ont ete mises au point afin de permettre un relachement rapide des fragments de fission radioactifs. A l'aide d'un dispositif permettant de pieger sur un doigt cryogenique les gaz rares relaches par la cible, des isotopes de quelques secondes de periodes ont ete observes. Ce dispositif installe aupres de differents accelerateurs de deutons a permis d'etudier la production de gaz rares riches en neutrons a differentes energies de deutons, dans le cadre de la collaboration europeenne spiral ii. Une experience de calibration a montre la possibilite d'installer un separateur d'isotopes en ligne de type isol aupres d'un accelerateur tandem 15 mv pouvant fournir 500 na de deutons a 26 mev pour explorer experimentalement la fission induite par neutrons rapides comme mode de production. Des faisceaux de zinc, de krypton, de rubidium, de cadmium, d'iode, de xenon et de cesium ont ete produits aupres de cette installation. Les faisceaux les plus intenses atteignent dix milles noyaux par microcoulomb avec des deutons de 26 mev. Un gain d'environ deux ordres de grandeur peut etre obtenu en utilisant une source d'ions plus specifique et en augmentant l'epaisseur de la cible. Un gain supplementaire de deux ordre de grandeur s'obtient en augmentant l'energie des deutons a 100 mev.

During the first tests several difficulties have arisen and have been investigated and solved by implementation of constraints. After the establishment of stable joint refinement program, we tested it on the MnCu(pba)...(H2O)3...2H2O, with pba = 1,3-propylenbis(oxamato) complex reusing data from an experiment of polarized neutron diffraction and making a new experience of X-ray diffraction at 10K. This study tested three weighting schemes and constraints. These tests showed that the joint refinement give access to the same results as the separated refinements but also allow us to go further by refining the spin density with more pertinent parameters. Following these initial tests, we were interested in a copper azido complex (Cu2L2(N3)2 with L=1,1,1-trifluoro-7-(dimethylamino)-4-methyl-5-aza-3-hepten-2-onato). The joint refinement give us access for the first time to the experimental spin-resolved valence density and also to refine the parameters of contraction / expansion for spin up or spin down separately. In the last chapter we studied a cobalt complex which shows interesting magnetic properties. However, the magnetic properties of the compound come from a high magnetic anisotropy which complicates a study by joint refinement. That is why we studied only the charge density of this compound. This study still allowed to show experimentally a torsion angle of 39° between the principal axes of the cobalt atoms, which was predicted by a previous theoretical study

Magnetic recording media refers to the disc shaped thin film magnetic medium present inside the hard disk drive of a computer. Magnetic recording is an important function of the hard disk drive by which information such as text, pictures, audio and videos are stored. Information is broken down to a simple binary format and is stored as magnetised bits along the tracks of the disk forming the hard drive. Over the years advancements in research on the type of magnetic materials used has allowed increased data storage capacities by reducing magnetic bit sizes. It is with this advancement in magnetic data storage, that we have today's hard disk drive technology, which uses a perpendicular magnetic medium to store data. A perpendicular magnetic medium is a multi-layered magnetic thin film structure with the topmost layer comprising nanoscale magnetic grains of high perpendicular anisotropy. The topmost recording layer (RL) is mapped into individual bits of 80-100 nm² area that consist of 5-10 nm diameter CoCrPt grains, embedded in an oxide matrix. A bit area is defined to ensure a significant number of stable grains allowing data to be stored in each bit as a ‘0' or a ‘1' depending on its switched magnetic state. The magnetic grains if sputtered below a threshold grain size tend to suffer from thermal fluctuation and instability due to super-paramagnetic effects, hence bringing limitations to grain size. As a result of this, research in recent years has been directed at introducing a softer magnetic exchange coupled composite (ECC) layer above the recording layer. This layer facilitates the delicate balance of switching smaller grains with strong magneto-crystalline anisotropy at lower magnetic fields, by exchange coupling with the CoCrPt grains in the recording layer. However this technique of increasing the efficiency in the perpendicular magnetic medium by introducing ‘facilitating' layers is an area that is still being widely researched and understood. Although numerous surface and bulk analysis techniques exist to study magnetic and surface properties of these materials, there is limited information on the structural and magnetic properties of these materials at the nanoscale level. The reported work investigates the structural and magnetic properties of the magnetic grains and multi-layers in the perpendicular magnetic medium using polarised neutron scattering and reflectivity techniques. The work investigates the structural and magnetic properties of the CoCrPt grains, apart from understanding the CoCrPt magnetic grain switching. The work also investigates the magnetisation in the layers of the thin film perpendicular media structure using polarised neutron reflectivity (PNR). Using polarised small angle neutron scattering (PolSANS), it has been shown that ferromagnetic ordered core region of the CoCrPt grain in the recording layer is smaller than the physical CoCrPt granular structure. The magnetic switching behaviour of the CoCrPt grain at different magnetic fields is also analysed and the experimental PolSANS data is fitted with non-interacting size-dependent analytical grain switching models. This result provides significant evidence that the magnetic anisotropy increases with grain size, with larger magnetic grains having larger magnetic anisotropy. Polarised neutron scattering experiments are carried out with the magnetically softer exchange coupled composite (ECC) layer included in the thin film magnetic structure. The first experiments investigate if the ECC layer contributes to the nuclear and magnetic interference scattering term in the experimenting scattering data. The experiments clearly show that there is no contribution from the ECC layer in the nuclear and magnetic scattering interference term. The role of the ECC layer in the magnetic switching process is then investigated at different magnetic fields. The ECC layer was found to influence the size-dependent magnetic grain switching of the CoCrPt grains in the recording layer and a detailed investigation is presented in the reported work. Polarised neutron reflectivity (PNR) experiments have also been carried out with the ECC layer on the perpendicular magnetic media samples. These experiments investigate the composition and thickness of the thin film structure, while also providing information on the magnetic state of the thin films under the influence of an in-plane magnetic field. The in-plane magnetisation in the recording and ECC layer is determined at different in-plane magnetic fields. The magnetisation values determined for the ECC layer and the recording layer (RL) at different in-plane magnetic fields help better understand the differences in their magnetic properties.

Magister Scientiae - MSc<br>The odd – odd Tl nuclei with A ≥ 190 have moderate oblate nuclear deformation and show rotational bands built on different quasiparticle excitations. Several phenomena, not yet fully understood, were observed in these nuclei, such as large signature splitting in the yrast band (built on a πh9/2⊗νi13/2 configuration), possible non – axiality of the nuclear shape, etc. In this work the high – spin states in 194Tl were studied. The 194Tl nuclei were produced in the 181Ta (18O, 5n) 194Tl reaction at a beam energy of 93 MeV and the γ - rays were detected using the AFRODITE array. The obtained extended level scheme of 194Tl is presented and discussed in this work. CSM (Cranking shell model) and TRS (Total Routhians Surface) models were both applied to interpret the results for band 1. The results were compared with the neighboring

Cette thèse s'inscrit dans un nouveau projet de mesure du moment dipolaire électrique (EDM) du neutron à l'institut Paul Scherrer. Deux aspects ont été étudiés ici: la détection et l'analyse de polarisation de neutrons ultra-froids. Trois types de détecteurs ont été testés à l'Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL): le cascade-U (technologieGEM), le compteur à gaz 3He et des scintillateurs dopés au 6Li (type GS). Leur efficacité de détection ainsi que leur sensibilité au bruit de fond ont été mesurées. Sous les conditions expérimentales du spectromètre EDM, le scintillateur GS10 s'est montré compétitif avec le détecteur à gaz 3He. Un système de double scintillateur GS3/GS20 a permis d'améliorer la séparation entre signaux neutrons et gammas. Il s'est avéré 20% moins efficace que le détecteur à gaz 3He sous le spectromètre EDM. Le cascade-U a, quant à lui, montré qu'il était 20% moins efficace qu'un GS10 de 500 µm d'épaisseur comme l'ont confirmé des simulations. Un nouveau système d'analyse simultanée de spin est présenté. Il consiste en deux systèmes de détection (bras) possédant chacun un spin flipper adiabatique, un analyseur de spin, et un détecteur. Les bras détectent chacun une composante de polarisation, permettant ainsi un comptage des deux états de spin du neutron. Des tests d'un prototype monté en situation horizontale à l'ILL ont montré que le pouvoir d'analyse des bras était de 80%. La transmission du sytème sans analyseurs est de 50%<br>This thesis was performed in the context of a project aiming to measure the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the neutron at the Paul Scherrer Institute. Two aspects have been studied: The detection and the polarization analysis of ulracold neutrons. Three types of detectors have been tested at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL): The cascade-U (GEM technology), the 3He gas detector and 6Li-doped glass scintillators (GS family). Their detection efficiency and their background sensitivity have been measured. The GS10 scintillator is competitive with the 3He gas detector under the conditions realized with the EDM spectrometer. A GS3/GS20 scintillator stack has enabled to improve the neutron/gamma discrimination. It has been found 20% less efficient than the 3He gas detector under the EDM spectrometer. The cascade-detector has been observed to be 20% less efficient than a 500 µm thick GS10 glass as confirmed by simulations. A new system for simultaneous spin analysis is presented. It consists of two independent detection systems (arms) which are each made of an adiabatic spin flipper, a spin analyzer, and a detector. The arms detect opposite spin components, allowing the simultaneous counting of both neutron spin orientations. A prototype mounted in horizontal configuration has been tested at ILL. The analyzing power of both arms has been measured to be 80%. The transmission of the system without spin analyzers has been found to be 50%

Les spectres des rayons γ prompt de fission sont des données nucléaires importantes pour la physique des réacteurs, en tant qu'entrée pour les calculs de chauffage gamma, puisque l'effet de chauffage gamma peut être sous-estimé jusqu'à ~28% avec les données nucléaires actuelles. De plus, les nouvelles informations sur les rayons γ prompts de fission seront utiles du point de vue de la physique fondamentale, où les résultats peuvent être comparés à de nombreuses prédictions théoriques concurrentes pour affiner les modèles du processus de fission. Les spectres des rayons γ prompts de fission ont été mesurés pour la fission induite par neutrons rapides de ²³⁸U et de ²³⁹Pu, en utilisant des neutrons rapides générés à partir de la source LICORNE. Le dispositif expérimental se composait d'une chambre d'ionisation et de différents types de détecteurs à scintillation, dont les détecteurs LaBr₃ et PARIS phoswich. Une procédure d'analyse, comprenant le unfolding et la simulation de la réponse aux rayons γ dans les détecteurs à scintillation, est mise au point pour extraire le spectre des rayons γ prompts de fission et les caractéristiques spectrales correspondantes. Les résultats expérimentaux sont comparés aux codes de modélisation de fission GEF et FREYA. Cette comparaison révèle que les caractéristiques spectrales sont liées aux conditions énergétiques, aux rendements isotopiques et au moment angulaire des fragments de fission. La dépendance énergétique des caractéristiques spectrales montre que l'émission des rayons γ est tout à fait insensible à l'énergie neutronique incidente. Toutefois, on observe une forte dépendance à l'égard du système fissionnant particulier<br>Prompt fission γ-ray spectra are important nuclear data for reactor physics, as an input for gamma heating calculations, since the gamma heating effect can be under-estimated by up to ~28% with present nuclear data. Furthermore the new prompt fission γ-ray information will be useful from a fundamental physics point of view, where results can be compared with many competing theoretical predictions to refine models of fission process. Prompt fission γ-ray spectra have been measured for the fast-neutron-induced fission of ²³⁸U and ²³⁹PuPu, using fast neutrons generated from the LICORNE source. The experimental setup consisted of an ionization chamber and different types of scintillation detectors, including LaBr₃ and PARIS phoswich detectors. An analysis procedure, including unfolding and recovering the γ-ray response in the scintillation detectors, is developed to extract the prompt fission γ-ray spectrum and corresponding spectral characteristics. The experimental results are compared to the fission modeling codes GEF and FREYA. This comparison reveals that the spectral characteristics are related to the energetic conditions, isotopic yields and angular momentum of the fission fragments. The energy dependence of the spectral characteristics shows that the prompt γ-rays emission is quite insensitive to the incident neutron energy. However, a strong dependence on the particular fissioning system is observed

Les neutrons rapides peuvent etre amenes dans le domaine d'energie des resonances de capture, ou ils seront captures avec une grande probabilite, par diffusions et ralentissements multiples dans un milieu a faible lethargie et de grande transparence aux neutrons. Cette methode, dite arc (adiabatic resonance crossing), peut etre utilisee pour ameliorer l'efficacite de transmutation des produits de fission a vie longue, solution alternative au stockage geologique de ces dechets nucleaires. L'etude du comportement neutronique dans un milieu favorable a cette methode, a ete menee au cern au cours de l'experience tarc, avec la mise en place d'un massif de plomb naturel pur de 334 tonnes. Le faisceau du proton-synchrotron delivrait quelques 10#9 protons par impulsion, de 2. 75 gev d'energie cinetique, produisant des neutrons rapides par spallation sur le plomb. Les mesures de transmutation ont ete faites avec trois echantillons de #9#9tc (2. 11 10#5 a) de nature et de masse differentes ainsi qu'avec du #1#2#9i (1. 5710#7 a), par spectroscopie gamma, apres activation neutronique. Respectivement, pres de 80% et 60% des captures ont ete realisees dans le domaine d'energie des resonances de ces deux elements. Les resultats experimentaux ont permis de valider le code de simulation de type monte-carlo, ecrit et developpe par c. Rubbia et al. , reproduisant parfaitement l'ensemble du comportement neutronique.

La décroissance du neutron offre de nombreuses observables utiles en physique nucléaire et des particules. L'une d’elles, le temps de vie du neutron (880.2(10) s d’après le PDG2018), est crucial dans estimation de la production d’hélium-4 lors de la nucléosynthèse primordiale. En complètement elle permet de tester la cohérence du modèle standard à travers l’unitarité de la matrice CKM. Durant les dernières décennies sa mesure a soulevé des notables difficultés et des inconsistances entre les différentes méthodes. Les projets permettant des mesures fiables du temps de vie du neutron sont donc particulièrement d’actualité.Dans ce travail nous pressentons HOPE, un piège magnéto-gravitationnel à neutrons ultra-froids (UCN) couplé à SUN2 une source d’UCN superthermale qui vise une mesure du temps de vie du neutron de précision sous 1 s. Le choix du piégeage magnétique supprime une des sources principales d’erreur systématique liée aux interactions avec les parois du piège. Cependant il est nécessaire de s’assurer que les neutrons sur-critiques pouvant encore rentrer en collision avec le mur sont suffisamment bien caractérisés pour introduire une erreur suffisamment faible et connue. L’évolution de tels neutrons est difficile à prédire, nous avons donc développé des simulations pour analyser les trajectoires possibles dans le piège. L’analyse de nombreuses trajectoires nous donne des informations à propos de l’évolution du spectre durant le remplissage, le piégeage, ainsi que sur les effets dus au chauffage par vibrations et la composition spectrale lors de la vidange du piège.Ces simulations accompagnes les premiers résultats obtenus à partir du couplage de HOPE et SUN2 à l’Institut Laue-Langevin. Nos mesures ont montré qu’en utilisant la configuration verticale étudier dans ce travail une précision statistique de 0.75 s par cycle de réacteur est possible, bien qu’il existe une source d’erreur systématique nécessitant un analyse précautionneuse pour produire une mesure non biaisé. Néanmoins nous avons pu dans deux configurations différentes mesurer des temps de stockage de 889(19) s et 882(17) s en accord avec l’actuelle valeur moyenne mondiale retenu. Les erreurs étant largement majoré par la statistique l’erreur systématique reste indéterminée. Bien qu’il ne le soit pas encore prouvé, des indications expérimentales, supportées par les simulations, indiquent que le chauffage des neutrons induit par les vibrations mécaniques pourrait limiter la précision atteignable dans la configuration actuelle. Une version horizontale simplifiée sans cryostat (et donc sans les fortes vibrations entraînées par la tête froide utilisée actuellement) est décrite à la fin de cette thèse. En plus de supprimer les vibrations cette configuration devrait, d’après les simulations, tripler le nombre de neutrons piégés<br>Neutron decay offers a plethora of observables which are useful for applications in nuclear and particle physics and tests of the standard model of the latter. One of them, the neutron lifetime (880.2(10) s in the PDG 2018), is a crucial input for estimation of the helium-4 content of the universe resulting from the primordial nucleosynthesis. In addition, it serves for a sensitive test of the consistency of the standard model through the CKM matrix unitarity. During the past decades, its measurement has revealed notorious difficulties and still unresolved inconsistencies between different methods. Projects for reliable measurements of the neutron lifetime are therefore of high interest.In this work we present the project HOPE, an ultra-cold neutron (UCN) magneto-gravitational trap coupled to a dedicated superthermal UCN source and aiming for a neutron lifetime measurement with accuracy below 1 s. The choice of magnetic trapping removes a major systematic uncertainty due to neutron interactions with material walls. However, magnetic trapping techniques have to ensure that marginally trapped neutrons that still are able to hit those walls are sufficiently well characterized not to induce significant systematic errors. Since the evolution of those neutrons in the trap is difficult to predict, we have developed simulations that analysed neutron trajectories existing in the trap. Analysis of many neutron histories provided information about the modification of the neutron spectrum during the filling of the trap, heating of neutrons due to vibrations, and the spectral composition of the emptying.These simulations accompany first experimental results obtained from the coupling of HOPE and the prototype helium-4 superthermal UCN source SUN2 set up at Institut Laue-Langevin. Our measurements have shown that, using the vertical implementation studied in this thesis, a measurement of a statistical precision of 0.75 s per reactor cycle is within reach, although sources of systematic uncertainty still need to be carefully analysed to provide an unbiased measurement. Still, we measured in two different procedures storage time constants of 889(19) s and 882(17) s in agreement with the current world-average value of the neutron lifetime, the error being due to counting statistics and the systematic uncertainty staying undetermined. Though not yet proven there are experimental indications, supported by simulations, that neutron heating from mechanical vibrations might limit the accuracy attainable with the current setup. A simplified new setup, with the trap implemented in horizontal orientation without cryostat (thus avoiding strong vibrations of the mono-stage GM cold head used in the current setup) is described at the end of this thesis. According to simulations such a configuration increases counting statistics by a factor 3, while strongly improving on a major systematic uncertainty by spectral heating due to vibrations

Nous présentons des synthèses de populations<br />permettant de retrouver les propriétés statistiques de la population<br />réelle des pulsars radio galactiques à partir de l'échantillon<br />observé biaisé par des effets de sélection. Nous confirmons que<br />les étoiles à neutrons ne naissent pas en majorité comme des<br />rotateurs rapides et que le champ magnétique ne subit pas de dissipation<br />notable pendant la phase pulsar. La connaissance de la population totale<br />nous permet d'une part d'étudier la sous-population des magnétars et<br />d'autre part de modéliser la contribution des pulsars à<br />l'émission gravitationnelle (galactique et extra-galactique) et d'en<br />déduire sa détectabilité par les antennes<br />interférométriques comme VIRGO. La connaissance des<br />propriétés statistiques de la population détectable par VIRGO<br />nous permet d'optimiser la recherche individuelle dans l'espace des<br />paramètres (fréquences et directions du ciel). Quant au fond de<br />rayonnement gravitationnel stochastique d'origine astrophysique, nous<br />montrons qu'il pourrait être détecté dès la deuxième<br />génération d'interféromètres en corrélant entre eux deux<br />détecteurs.

This has the potential to cause errors in the Monte Carlos used to determine the expected neutron backgrounds in the MiniCLEAN single phase liquid argon WIMP detector. Elastic and inelastic collisions between neutrons and argon nuclei as well as neutron captures were simulated independently in order to characterize the accuracy of the implementation by GEANT4.9.3.pOl and GEANT4.9.5. The effective cross sections, angular distributions, photons, decay schemes, energy conservation, and momentum conservation were determined through analysis of the neutron tracks created by GEANT4. A large proportion of the interactions behave as expected, however energy and momentum are not conserved by varying degrees of severity with some GEANT4.9.3.pOl inelastic collisions resulting in over twice the correct amount of energy.<br>by Kathleen M. Cette these presente les resultats obtenus dans la modelisation de proto-etoiles a neutrons (pren) en rotation (solide et differentielle) et dans l'etude de methodes numeriques permettant la modelisation du rebond dans une supernova de type ii (sn ii) dans le cadre des methodes spectrales. Les pren sont modelisees dans l'approximation stationnaire, de facon pleinement relativiste. Les differentes phases de leur evolution sont successivement prises en compte (interieur opaque ou transparent aux neutrinos, isentropique ou isotherme). Pour le cas de la rotation solide, il est demontre que la configuration de masse maximale est aussi, en premiere approximation, celle possedant la plus grande vitesse de rotation. La formule empirique donnant la frequence maximale de rotation des etoiles a neutrons (en) est aussi verifiee pour ces pren. Pour le cas de la rotation differentielle, la notion de limite de masse minimale est introduite et le moment cinetique maximal des pren calcule. Il est demontre que cette limite impose une contrainte sur la vitesse maximale de rotation des en qui demeurent solitaires apres leur naissance. La brisure spontannee de symetrie de ces objets est egalement etudiee, dans l'hypothese ou le champ magnetique rigidifie la rotation. Pour la partie numerique, d'une part, la methode de la viscosite spectrale evanescente est appliquee aux polynomes de tchebycheff et comparee avec les methodes numeriques classiques de traitement des chocs. D'autre part, le comportement exact sur l'axe polaire des fonctions en coordonnees spheriques est pris en compte dans les developpements spectraux et applique au cas simple de l'equation d'onde. Il est demontre que ces deux methodes n'ameliorent pas le traitement numerique et que leur utilite pour les codes numeriques spectraux est sujette a caution.

Le projet DONEUT (DOsimètre NEUtrons) dans lequel s’inscrit cette thèse vise à répondre à un besoin avéré, des mondes militaire et civil, qui souhaitent déterminer de manière plus précise l’impact, fondamental dans le domaine de la radioprotection, des rayonnements neutroniques pour les personnels mettant en œuvre l’énergie nucléaire.Pour répondre à ce besoin, nécessitant une mesure rapide (≤ 10 min) et précise des débits d’équivalents de dose ambiants (H*(10)) et personnels (Hp(10)) neutrons rencontrés dans ces environnements industriels, entre 1 μSv/h et ~10 mSv/h, un prototype de spectromètre de forme cylindrique en polyéthylène multi-instrumenté, transportable (masse ≤ 15 kg), avec 32 détecteurs de neutrons thermiques placés à différentes profondeurs, a été développé dans le cadre de ce projet.Cet appareil permet de remonter, via des méthodes de déconvolution telles que MAXED ou GRAVEL, au spectre complet des neutrons, entre 0 et 20 MeV, dont la nocivité en exposition externe à distance dépend fortement de leur énergie. Les résultats se révèlent encourageants et en bon accord avec ceux obtenus avec le spectromètre NNS (Nested Neutron Spectrometer) qui a servi de référence, avec une bonne discrimination entre les rayonnements gamma et neutronique<br>The DONEUT (DOsimètre NEUtrons) project in which this thesis is included, has to answer to the following issue for the civilian an military nuclear industries : a more precise determination of the neutron impact on the human body, fundamental in radiation protection.To fulfill theses requirements, which consist of measuring an ambient or personal dose equivalent rateS (H*(10) or Hp(10)) from 1 µSv/h to ~10 mSv/h in less than 10 minutes, a transportable (mass ≤ 15 kg) multi detectors cylindric prototype has been developed, with 32 thermal neutron detectors placed at different depths.This device is able to rebuild a full neutron spectrum from 0 to 20 MeV through unfolding computer codes like MAXED and GRAVEL, and the results are in good agreement with those obtained with the NNS spectrometer (Nested Neutron Spectrometer), which was our reference, with a good gamma/neutron discrimination

La recherche de moment dipolaire électrique (EDM) permanent pour des systèmes simples comme le neutron est l'une des pistes explorées pour découvrir de nouvelles sources de violation de la symétrie CP au-delà du Modèle Standard de la physique des particules.La découverte de telles sources et l'identification de nouveaux modèles pourrait permettre d'expliquer l'asymétrie baryogénique de l'Univers.Il existe donc plusieurs expériences de mesure d'EDM de divers systèmes (neutron, électron, atomes...) et l'expérience nEDM de l'Institut Paul Scherrer (PSI) est l'une d'elles.La collaboration nEDM a acquis des données pendant deux ans en 2015 et 2016 avant de publier la nouvelle limite pour l'EDM du neutron en février 2020.Ce type d'expérience de précision requiert un contrôle optimal des effets systématiques.Dans cette thèse, nous nous intéressons au contrôle des effets liés aux inhomogénéités de champ magnétique qui surviennent en raison de l'utilisation d'un co-magnétomètre mercure dans l'expérience nEDM de PSI.Ce co-magnétomètre permet de contrôler la stabilité temporelle du champ magnétique et est indispensable à l'optimisation de la sensibilité statistique.Pour pouvoir corriger les effets systématiques liés aux inhomogénéités du champ, celles-ci sont caractérisées grâce à des mesures hors-ligne du champ magnétique : les cartographies.Nous présentons ici la méthode de caractérisation, l'analyse des cartographies du champ et l'utilisation des résultats pour corriger l'effet systématique principal de la mesure de l'EDM du neutron.Une fois les corrections issues de l'analyse des cartographies prises en compte sur les données de l'expérience nEDM, la dernière étape de l'analyse de ces données peut être réalisée afin d'extraire la valeur de la mesure de l'EDM telle qu'elle a été publiée par la collaboration.La mise en place de cette étape, sa réalisation et son résultat font également l'objet de cette thèse<br>The search for a permanent electric dipole moment for simple systems such as the neutron is one of the most promising leads to discover CP violation beyond the Standard Model of particle physics.The discovery of such CP violation sources and the identification of new models beyond the Standard Model could lead to an explanation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe.Therefore, there are several experiments aiming to measure a non-zero EDM for various systems (neutron, electron, atoms...).The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) nEDM experiment is one of them.The nEDM collaboration has collected data during two years (2015 and 2016) and published the most recent limit for the neutron EDM in April 2020.Precision measurements such as that experiment require an optimal control of the systematic effects.In this thesis, we present how to control the effects of the magnetic field inhomogeneities, which arise from the use of a mercury co-magnetometer in the PSI nEDM experiment.The co-magnetometer allows us to monitor the stability of the magnetic field and is essential to optimize the statistical sensibility.In order to correct the systematic effects of the magnetic field inhomogeneities, we perform an offline characterization of the field : the mapping.We present in this thesis the mapping measurement method, its analysis and the resulting corrections of the main systematic effect of the neutron EDM measurement.Once those corrections are taken into account, the last step of the analysis of nEDM data can be achieved, in order to extract the neutron EDM value which was published by the collaboration.The application of that step and its results are also presented in this thesis

Un nouveau détecteur pour l'étude des décroissances bêta-neutron retardé a été construit (TONNERRE). Il se compose de 32 scintillateurs plastiques courbés d'une longueur de 180 cm de long, positionnés chacun à 120 cm de la cible d'implantation. L'énergie des neutrons est obtenue par la mesure du temps de vol sur cette distance, permettant de couvrir une gamme de 300keV à 15MeV avec une très bonne résolution. Ce dispositif a été testé avec différents noyaux connus. Ses performances sont comparées avec des résultats de simulation Monte Carlo. La grande efficacité de TONNERRE a permis l'étude de l'émission de un et de deux neutrons du 11Li. De plus un schéma complet des décroissances beta du 33Mg et du 35Al est établi pour la première fois en faisant une spectroscopie beta-n-lambda. Ce schéma est comparé à des calculs de modèle en couche.

Une analyse des neutrinos solaires du ⁸B de Borexino et la simulation Monte Carlo (MC) des produits de l'interaction des muons cosmiques en Borexino et Double Chooz sont présentées dans ce mémoire. L'analyse des neutrinos solaires du ⁸B de Borexino a été réalisée aux plus faibles seuils d'énergie jamais atteints : 3 MeV et 2 MeV. Le seuil 3 MeV a demandé l'étude et la mise en oeuvre de nouvelles techniques de rejection des isotopes cosmogéniques. Le seuil 2 MeV a demandé une étude approfondie du bruit de fond extérieur affectant le noyau de Borexino et la réalisation d'outils MC pour reproduire sa distribution spatiale et énergétique. Les fréquences mesurées (0. 22 ± 0. 04stat ± 0. 01syst cpd/100t à 2MeV) sont compatibles avec les prévisions du modèle solaire standard intégré par la solution des oscillations MSW-LMA. Borexino et Double Chooz utilisent des scintillateurs liquides, sensibles à la contamination des muons survivant en sous-sol. Plusieurs codes MC ont été développés pour décrire les interactions des muons et les conséquentes cascades hadroniques et production de neutrons ou d'isotopes. La comparaison des simulations par Geant4 et FLUKA avec les résultats de Borexino pour des faisceaux de muons d'énergie autour de 270 GeV a montré que : (a) l'interaction des neutrons est bien reproduite, mais (b) la cascade d'hadrons est sous estimée comme le montrent les données concernant les fréquences des isotopes et des neutrons. La validation des simulations MC dans la bande d'énergie autour de 64 GeV sera possible dès que les nouvelles données concernant les fréquences cosmogéniques en Double Chooz seront disponibles<br>The present work deals with both ⁸B solar neutrino analysis in Borexino, and Monte Carlo (MC) simulation of cosmic muon interaction products in Borexino and Double Chooz. In Borexino, the ⁸B solar neutrino analysis was performed at the lowest energy thresholds ever reached : 3 and 2MeV. Setting the energy threshold at 3MeV required the study and development of removal techniques for cosmogenic isotopes. Decreasing the energy threshold down to 2MeV required a deep study of the external backgrounds affecting the Borexino core, and the development of precise MC tools to reproduce their radial and energy distributions. The measured rates, (0. 22 ± 0. 04stat ± 0. 01 syst) cpd/100t above 3MeV and (0. 31 = 0. 04stat = 0. 01 syst) cpd/100t above 2MeV, are compatible with the expectation based on the Standard Solar Model plus MSW-LMA oscillation solution. Borexino and Double Chooz experiments use liquid scintillator detectors, affected by cosmogenic contaminations from underground surviving muons; Many MC codes have been developed to describe muon interactions and subsequent hadronic cascades and neutron or isotope productions. Simulations through Geant4 and FLUKA were performed. The comparison with the Borexino data showed two important results concerning muon beam with mean energy around 270 GeV. First, the neutron interactions are well reproduced by Geant4 and FLUKA. On the contrary, the hadronic shower development is underestimated, as proven by the disagreement with the cosmogenic isotope and neutron rates. Double Chooz data on cosmogenics rates will soon be available. They will allow MC/data comparison for a muon beam energy range of about 64GeV
