Abstract : The novel Il seme sotto la neve, written by Ignazio Silone (1900 ? 1978), was published for the first time in Germany, in 1941, by Verlag Oprecht, in Switzerland, and translated by Werner Johannes Guggenheim. For political reasons, the novel was prohibited from being published in Italy during Fascism, thus, its first publication was in Germany. The writer was exiled from Italy for some time and was unable to return to his home country later on since he was under threat of arrest for being against the country?s political regime. During the period of exile, Silone wrote Il seme sotto la neve, which was published in Italy in 1942. In Brazil, A semente sob a neve was first published by Brasiliense, and translated by Eglatina Santi. The second translation was published in 2001, by Germinal and translated by Wilson Hilário Borges. From these two translations, we made a comparative analysis which led to the conclusion that the second one is a plagiarism. Thus, the theoretical approach was based on Benjamin (2010), Derrida (2006), Ricoeur (2011), Lefevere (2007), Berman (2007) and Venuti (2002), and on concepts of pervivence, rewriting, domestication and foreignization. Through the analysis of some excerpts of the two novels, we concluded that the 2001 translation of A semente sob a neve is considered a plagiarism.

This thesis deals with narrative transformations of tales and legends from the earliest versions to written by the Brothers Grimm in the nineteenth century beginnings to the film versions of today, translate, preserve and reveal stories that attract, delight and educate for generations with its myths and archetype. This is because the fairy tales approximate poetically of human reality and constitute a strong presence in education and training of children. To achieve this was chosen the tale Snow White, recorded by the Brothers Grimm (1812) and adapted by Sousa Filho and Almeida Júnior (1950) and the film versions Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Disney - 1937), Snow White and the Hunter (Rupert Sanders - 2012) and My Mirror (Tarsem Singh - 2012). The survey was conducted with students from the 5th grade of elementary school and undergraduate students in education and degrees at the University of Brasilia, who experienced what we call narrative journey of this tale. We emphasize the cinema, as a very present language in the educational universe of teachers and students and its theoretical framework W. Benjamin, especially his thoughts in The Storyteller, about the importance of the fairy tale and the transformation of the act of narration, and ML Von Franz in The Interpretation of Fairy Tales, on the place occupied by the myths and archetypes in humanity, as well as for education, according to the vision of Carl Jung.

Full textThis work analyzes the seasonal and spatial distribution of snow in Rio Grande do Sul (RS) and Santa Catarina (SC), southern Brazil. This analysis is based on the daily data and the Climatological Normals (1961-1990), coming from the local weather stations, maintained by the Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET), to obtain the basic climatological data (compensated monthly medium temperatures, minimum absolute temperatures and monthly pluviometric totals). To contextualize the study of this phenomenon, the characterization of the climate was prepared for the region. The total days of snow, averages and conventional percentages were compiled directly from INMET observations. In seasonal terms, the occurrence period extends from May to September, when the marine polar air mass (mP) has greater influence in the south of Brazil. The month of July concentrated most of the events, with more than 40% of the days of snow in most of the analyzed stations. The polar anticyclone has a fundamental role in the understanding this phenomenon, associating most of the events with continental passages of this atmospheric system. The highlands of southern Brazil, starting at 600 m, present the largest annual averages of days with snow, values averaging from 1.8 day/year in Cambará do Sul (RS) to 2.7 day/year in São Joaquim (SC), the highest averages of snow occurrence. The area of occurrence of the phenomenon is called “Planalto da Neve”, and is subdivided in two sectors: 1) above 900 m and, 2) between 600 m and 900 m. This plateau possesses 95.242 km² and is spread out between RS and SC, comprising 90 municipalities of RS and 101 in SC. The analysis of the interannual variation considering the data from São Joaquim, SC ) indicated that, from the studied series, 1961, 1963, 1971, 1973, 1982 and 1986, did not register snow. The most relevant snowfalls happened in the years of 1965, 1975, 1988 and 1990. The intervals between periods with absence of snow and of more important snowfalls indicates a decadal cycle in the dynamics of the phenomenon. Regardless of the peaks in precipitation registered for 1988 and 1990, there is no trend in the increase of snow precipitation for São Joaquim.

Abstract: This research analyses the 1812 (first edition) and the 1857 (seventh edition) of the "Snow White" short stories as collected by the Brothers Grimm. We begin our study with Giambattista Basile's "The Young Slave" (1634), a Napolitan short story seen as "Snow White's" ancestral, to see how the Snow White's tellers have conceived its narrative. For that, we concentrate on "White as Snow" (1894), the Brazilian version of this tale by Figueiredo Pimentel, on Neil Gaiman's short story "Snow, Glass and Apples" (1998) and also on Tarsem Singh's film version Mirror, Mirror (2012). We comparatively verify the spheres of action and the functions of the characters in these narratives through Vladimir Propp's structural model in order to understand how these narratives are structured and to spot in them the variants that will allow us to also think of the originating aspects of the themes of jealousy, envy and revenge, and of the endless battle between Good and Evil, which all motivate the action and the resulting ideological aspects. We intend to show that Fairy Tales do not disappear, because they are living narratives in constant remodeling which change through time, motivated by its social and cultural contexts of production. In other words, we inquire about the ways in which the rewritings of these Fairy Tales bring the Grimm Brothers' narrative we use as the basis of this study culturally up to date, and which meanings emerge from this. Which critical elements could be found in ...

Full textThis dissertation aims at investigating the atmospheric circulation dynamics and patterns of during snowfalls in southern Brazil and their relation with ENSO and PDO events, and at elaborating a specific diagnostic atmospheric index for snowfall. Patterns of atmospheric circulation are identified based on the reanalysis of the NCEP-NCAR (National Center for Environmental Prediction/National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) from 1948 to 2004. The inter-annual and inter-decade variability of the snowfalls is evaluated base don the frequency of this phenomenon. The variables of temperature, pressure, geopotential height, Q-vector divergence and precipitating water were used to construct the atmospheric diagnostic index from the same NCEP-NCAR set, and the F test for its validation. Seven patterns of atmospheric circulation associated to the snowfalls are found, being four related to cyclogenetic processes, two to the continental displacement of the transient anticyclone, and one to the presence of a cold front. The main pattern, which occurred in 47% of the cases, is due to the continental displacement of a transient anticyclone in South America associated to cyclogenesis around 35ºS and 40ºW. This pattern occurs mostly in La Niña years and causes broader snowfalls. The years of climatic neutrality of the ENOS events and the ODP warm phases present a higher snowfall frequency, and the early and late ones occur preferably in La Niña years. The proposed diagnostic index identifies the snowfall condition, with only one digit, for São Joaquim, and it is associated to a probability of occurrence of the phenomenon. Futhermore, it suggests that the main physical processes responsible for the snowfalls occur in low atmospherical levels, between 850 and 700 hPa, where the atmosphere must present negative temperatures, precipitating water and vertical movement of synoptic scale.

Full textYôko Tawada, a Japanese author who writes in German, has contributed to a modern phenomenon responsible for resetting the boundaries of the concept of national or international literature in German-speaking countries and literatures. Tawada has paved the way to other exophonic authors to be regarded and studied as such. Exophony, a fairly recent term, refers to the specific case of writers who step outside of their mother tongue, choosing a foreign language to write literature in. The term, however, resonates with wider attempts at defining this literature which, according to Ottmar Ette (2005), has no fixed abode, i.e., does not belong. This work aims at a) translating Yôko Tawada’s novel Etüden im Schnee (2014) into Brazilian Portuguese in order to help bring the author into Brazil’s literary polysystem, b) introducing Tawada’s work and themes present in her books as well as her vision on translation and writing processes, c) introducing exophony as a valid way to read literary texts written in a foreign language and d) analysing Etüden im Schnee and its translation into Portuguese with a basis on the exophonic themes and formal structures that can be observed within the text. Drawing upon Tawada’s critical oeuvre as well as biographical elements and a general take on her works and what constitutes a Tawadian text, alongside with a wider canvas of what exophony is as well as the author’s own view on exophony and the process of writing in a foreign language, we aim at analysing her latest novel Etüden im Schnee and its translation into Portuguese taking into account the process of cultural, stylistic and cognitive translation, as presented by Wright (2010, 2013) in order to propose an exophonic view of translation. In the novel Etüden im Schnee Tawada imagines the inside world of a polar bear’s mind by giving three generations of polar bears, The Grandmother, Toska and Knut, a chance to tell a story, a story about politics, languages, different worlds and species and what makes bears and humans alike. The aim here is to identify elements of exophony as well as themes and strategies present in the novel and its translation.

Full textThis paper examines the variability of the snow annual net accumulation rate at a site located in Detroit Plateau (64°05'07"S, 59°38'42"W; 1937 m a.s.l.), northern part of the Antarctic Peninsula. Snow accumulation was determined from the interpretation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) variations in an ice core (DP-07-1), collected in the austral summer of 2007/2008. We then examined the relationship between changes in the accumulation rate and the variability in the sea ice extent in the Amundsen/Bellinghausen seas (between 60° and 130° W) to the west of the Antarctic Peninsula, with variations in the SAM index, and with Faraday/Vernadsky (65°15'S, 64°16'W; 11 m a.s.l.) weather station data. The ice core represents 27 ± 1 years of accumulation corresponding to the period 1981–2007. The net annual accumulation rate average is 2.42 m in water equivalent (w. eq.) and shows a positive trend during the period (+0.037 m a–1). We found a weak relationship between the net accumulation rate on the Plateau Detroit and the sea ice cover extend in the Amundsen/Bellinghausen seas. The variability in the snow accumulation rate is correlated with changes in the SAM (Southern Annular Mode) index and therefore to the variability of the climate controls that this represents indirectly. This accumulation rate is also related to the mean air temperature variations in the western part of the Antarctic Peninsula. We found a positive trend for the mean annual air temperature series (+0.045 °C a–1). Wind speed also showed an increasing trend in the annual series (+0.075 knots a–1) and in all seasons, concomitant increase in the accumulation rate in the Detroit Plateau.
