the house with the light burns all night. it seems to be empty: she never hears or sees anyone coming in or out of the door. she never sees anyone through the window—not even a flicker of movement. but every night the light is on and it stays on. the curtain is drawn so she has no idea of the occupants. but one day she notices that the blinds are up and the window open. she is looking onto a large bed with bright red cushions. that is the first and last she sees of the room. she hears months later that the husband had died.

Ghosh, Arijit, and Pankaj K. Pal. "Pollination ecology of Clerodendrum indicum (Lamiaceae): first report of deceit pollination by anther-mimicking stigma in a bisexual flower." Revista de Biología Tropical 65, no. 3 (June 8, 2017): 988. http://dx.doi.org/10.15517/rbt.v65i3.29450.

Abstract:
Clerodendrum indicum (Lamiaceae) is a medicinally important shrub. We have studied the details of its pollination ecology which was hitherto unknown. The work was done during three consecutive years 2012-2014, based on 118 plants occurring in three widely separated wild populations in West Bengal, India, together with 25 individuals grown in an experimental plot. Details of flower structure and dynamics of floral events, pollen production and pollen dispersal, visitors and pollinators, floral attractants and floral rewards and pollen transfer mechanism have been worked out by standard methodologies with a 10x high resolution hand lens (IRL), a Leica WILD M3B Stereo-binocular microscope (Switzerland) and a Leica DMLB compound bright field light microscope (Germany). The tubular flower of four-day longevity attracts its visitors by visual cues. Flowers are visited regularly by ten species of insects. On the basis of the visitor behaviour, these can be classified into three distinct categories, viz., visitors belonging to Category-I act on cushion and trichome nectaries of calyx and corolla respectively, those of Category-II act on the dehisced anthers and trichome nectaries of corolla while those of Category-III act on dehisced anthers as well as receptive stigma. Majority of the visitors belong to either Category-I or Category-II. They visit only the 2nd day flowers and never visit a 3rd day flower when the stigma assumes receptivity. Therefore, they are not regarded as pollinators but, act as pollen and/or nectar robbers. Those are discriminated by offering secretions from extra-nuptial nectaries of the flower. Visitor species of Category-III, represented by a species of Trigona, constitute the legitimate pollinator of the plant and thereby, making the plant monophilic. Pollen presentation from the bisexual, dichogamous and protandrous flower takes place on the 2nd day, while the stigma assumes its receptivity on the 3rd day of flower opening. Pollen transfer to the body of the pollinator by a 2nd day flower in its male phase is achieved by offering edible pollen grains. On the other hand, a 3rd day flower at its female phase is devoid of the reward (pollen grain). The yellow shiny receptive stigma of such a flower strikingly mimics the freshly dehisced anthers and the pollinators being lured by such a stigma inadvertently transfer pollen onto it. C. indicum is so far the only known species of flowering plants where deceit pollination occurs by anther-mimicking stigma in a bisexual flower.

Macanova, Kristīne. "IMAGES OF VILIS DZĒRVINĪKS’ POETRY." Via Latgalica, no. 11 (February 20, 2018): 113. http://dx.doi.org/10.17770/latg2018.11.3065.

Full text
Abstract:
Vilis Dzērvinīks (1959–2007) is a bright Latgalian poet of the 1990s and the verge of centuries. V. Dzērvinīks has published five collections of poetry: „Sidrabainas asaru lāsītes” (Silver tear drops, 1992), „Laimeigu īsadūmōt” (To imagine being happy, 2001), „Voi moz lidmašīnu kreit” (Are there not many planes falling, 2003), „Upers” (Sacrifice, 2006), and posthumously– „Storp pērstim blusa trynās” (A flea is rubbing between fingers, 2008). V. Dzērvinīks wrote in vers libre, following the 1990s quest for modernity, at the same time the elements of rhythm, concentration of expression and word are preserved to reveal different principles of modernity. V. Dzērvinīks displays rich and cultivated Latgalian, in which he discloses ironically his experiences to the reader, who may be fluent not only in the Latgalian language. The aim of the particular research is to reveal the role of the image of the eye, day or life in the poetry of V. Dzērvinīks’ from both literary and linguistic point of view. The sources of the research are so far not analysed V. Dzērvinīks’ collections of poetry: „Sidrabainas asaru lāsītes” (1992) and „Storp pērstim blusa trynās” (2008). The author of this research has determined six most concentrated images in V. Dzērvinīks’ poetry collections – „Laimeigu īsadūmōt” (2001), „Voi moz lidmašinu kreit” (2003), „Upers” (2006). They are the following: eye, day, life, time, heart and word. The most commonly used images in Dzērvinīks’ poetry collections were also identified with the help of AntConc program; no significant differences were observed in dominating images, only conceptual and semantic distinctions, which enable us to judge about the basic values of V. Dzērvinīks’ poetry and the relationship of the lyrical person towards the world and himself. The semantic and symbolic meaning of images is revealed and the syntagmatic attitudes and semantic roles of images are studied. The research is based on the method of structural semiotics (Jurij Lotman, Jurij Tinanov and Ruta Veidemane). Although the author uses various compositional structures in collections of poetry „Sidrabainas asaru lāsītes” (1992) and „Storp pērstim blusa trynās” (2008), they share several themes of experience: politics and social problems, love poetry and philosophy of life. The distinction is marked by the change of the epoch and is reflected in the mood of poems; in the first collection of poems, the author in a separate chapter retrieves memories about his childhood, country house and here is also a chapter that can be called poet's confession. One of the central meanings of the image of the eye is the symbol of the spiritual vision or blindness, an indicator of feelings and emotions; therefore, the image of the eye is revealed directly in philosophical and love poetry, where not reason is necessary but soul; in politics there is no room for emotions and feelings, therefore the use of the eye image in socio-political poems is minimal. In spite of the great time difference between collections of poetry „Sidrabainas asaru lāsītes” (1992) and „Storp pērstim blusa trynās” (2008), the image of the day is most significant in the chapters of poetry about life philosophy; the lyrical person perceives it as an endless routine, a time loop that never changes. Almost all chapters in both collections are interwoven by such mood except the chapter of love poetry in the first collection. The image of life in all parts of the collections are revealed in a rather uniform way – the life of the lyrical person is full of pain and disappointment, there is no consolation even in love; the means by which lyrical person describes life are stylistically diverse, creative and artistically bright and nuanced. Evaluation of the collection of poems not only in terms of content but also the form reveals that in „Sidrabainas asaru lāsītes” (1992) the author applies various forms – traditional forms and vers libre, as well as more varied syntactic and stylistic figures, also found in syntagmatic analysis. The poems written in Latvian are more varied in form, because those written in Latgalian are on soul-related topics, where continuity and unambiguousness of thought are important, and thus there are fewer attempts to search for new meanings or use of unexpected tropes. In the collection „Storp pērstim blusa trynās” (2008), the author has almost abandoned stylistic figures and vers libre, focusing on irony and imaginative language as the main means of expression. Poetry is only in Latgalian and it is dominated by the search for the meaning of life and the growing disillusionment of the lyrical person with his time, life and love.

Abstract:
Abstract Leukemia relapse occurring in donor cells, so called donor cell leukemia (DCL) after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation has been previously reported in the literature. Some authors have suggested that the development of DCL is perhaps a more common occurrence than traditionally thought. Donor cell myeloma (DCM) seems to be less frequent than DCL. This 46-year old male when first seen in 2000 was diagnosed with stage IIIa multiple myeloma. A monoclonal IgA kappa spike was recorded at diagnosis. Treatment with melphalan and prednisone was delivered every four to six weeks for a total of 22 courses. Fourty months after the initial diagnosis, an M2 acute myelogenous leukemia was identified. Treatment with chemotherapy resulted in complete remission. Matched UCB cells were localized at the London Cord Blood Bank. The UCB belonged to a male product of a white western European mother and a black Nigerian father who was a carrier of hemoglobin S. Hemoglobins A, F and S were detected in the UCB, consonant with sickle cell trait. The patient was allografted employing the "Mexican" NST conditioning regimen, granulocyte count recovered to more than 0.5 x 109/L on day 14, with the platelet count never dropping below 20 x 109/L. On day +40, the polymorphic microsatellite markers revealed mixed chimerism. The hemoglobin S gene was identified on day +20 and on day +60, full chimerism was shown. Cyclosporine A was stopped on day +350. The patient returned 170 months after the transplant with low back pain and the bone marrow aspiration disclosed 80% abnormal plasma cells, an IgA kappa monoclonal spike of 3.1 gr/dl, and complete chimerism. Malignant plasma cells were sorted by means of flow cytometry before genetic fingerprinting; cells were stained with an admixture of fluorescent monoclonal antibodies and cells co-expressing dim CD45, bright CD38 and CD56 were sorted out to ≥99% purity. Sorted cells were shown to have donor origin (Figure 1). The patient was treated with thalidomide, dexamethasone and bortezomib and the monoclonal spike disappeared; an autologous stem cell transplant is planned. Most people consider that the development of a malignancy in the cells of the donor is a rare event and very few prospective studies have analyzed the real prevalence of this phenomenon. Prospectively, we have found that 7% (95% CI 2.9 to 13.6%) of patients with leukemic activity after an allogeneic graft do have a donor cell-derived leukemia; this figure contrasts with those described elsewhere in non-prospective studies. A major problem in the analysis of donor cell derived malignancies is that demonstration of the donor cell origin of malignant activity. In this case, the demonstration of DNA of the donor in the fluorescence-activated sorted malignant plasma cells is indicative of the origin of the myeloma cells. Interestingly, the immunoglobulin type produced by the initial myeloma cells is the same as that of the donor-cell myeloma; Despite being two myelomas producing the same immunoglobulin subtype, both should be considered as de novomalignancies and as such, treated; we have previously shown that donor cell leukemias do have a response when treated as de novo, non-secondary leukemias. To our best knowledge, this is the second report of DCM following allogeneic HSCT. Prior to this case, Kim et al reported a DCM after an allogeneic transplant in a patient with refractory anemia with ringed sideroblasts. Previously, two cases have been reported of donor-origin MM, but they occurred in patients who underwent solid organ transplantation of the kidney and heart-lung. Kumar et alreported a case of DCM developing after unrelated allogeneic HSCT in the both donor and recipient but they did not conducted a comprehensive molecular cytogenetic study. In the case published by Maestas et al, an abnormal proliferation of plasma cells was identified in the donor, thus making possible that a malignant plasma cell clone was already present in the donor stem cells. In summary, we have clearly shown that this patient has had three different malignancies: 1) De novomultiple myeloma, 2) Secondary acute myelogenous leukemia and 3) De novodonor cell-derived multiple myeloma. The mechanisms involved in these episodes could be useful to better understand tumorigenesis. Disclosures No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

On a bright day in Philadelphia just over one year ago, a group of surgeons met to discuss the possibility of critically examining the literature published thus far on endoscopic techniques in the management of sinonasal and skull base tumours at the instigation of the European Rhinologic Society. Whilst it has proved relatively easy to provide level 1 evidence for virtually all medical treatments of allergic rhinitis (1), even for many therapies in rhinosinusitis (2), in rhinology in general we have struggled with surgical approaches, not because they don’t work but because they do not readily lend themselves to placeboarms or drug-company sponsorship. The rapid uptake of endoscopic techniques for nose and sinus diseases relied on more than just the undoubted enjoyment of using the instrumentation and whilst we had witnessed the escalation and extension of the techniques to the skull base and sino-orbital interface for benign conditions, there was a natural hesitation and concern about applying these to tumours and especially to malignant disease(3).

It is beyond unfashionable today among young evangelicals involved in theology to aspire to orthodoxy. The famous statement made by Charles Hodge about old Princeton that “a new idea never originated in this seminary” is not something that appeals to bright young theologians, nor need it be taken at face value. On the other hand, new, innovative, and adventurous ideas are top drawer, in line with the attitude of our day that the latest is the greatest, and the newest the best. Orthodoxy in theology, like conservatism in politics, is cold potatoes. But have we been sold down the river? The present popularity of Jordan Peterson on social media suggests a rising counter current.

The next day, however, it became obvious that the students were totally confused. In my early years of teaching, this situation happened all too often. Even though observations by my principal clearly pointed out that I was very good at explaining mathematics to my students, knew my subject matter well, and really seemed to be a dedicated and caring teacher, something was wrong. The day I saw him for the first time, I was completely paralyzed because of his dazzling beauty. I thought he was the most handsome man I had ever seen. He was tall, his eyes were green, and his face was so sweet. His beautiful smile accompanied by his dimples illuminated the whole place. I could not help smiling flirtatiously because at least I expected a glance in return. Although, I assumed that someone like him would never notice me, I did not care. I kept looking at him. I looked like a complete fool; however, to my surprise, he looked back at me smiling. I felt like the happiest woman in the world. It was amazing how his gaze had enchanted me so much that I did not know what to say. My face reflected the inevitable attraction I had for that handsome man. I do not know what happened to me. Abstract:
The World Kidney Day was announced for the fifth time in 2011, that calls attention to chronic renal failure as it attains the title of endemic. Richard Bright (1789–1858), a British doctor was the first to recognize and describe the uremic state and the kidney diseases leading to it. There are many aspects that the readers should remember him about especially in connection with the World Kidney Day. During his European study tour’s stage in Hungary, he was not so much interested in the country’s medical and health conditions, rather in its economic and cultural life, natural history and geography. He travelled to Hungary on two occasions and recorded his experiences in a personal travel documentation illustrated with his own drawings. He finally established himself in London in 1820 and together with Thomas Addison and Thomas Hodgkin they formed the Guy’s Hospital’s world-famous “scientist trio”. Bright described the nephritis’s classical image, nowadays known as Bright’s disease for the first time at the age of 38 years in 1827. A presently turned up Hungarian medical certificate from 1870 contains the Bright’s disease described by Richard Bright as a written diagnosis. This 140-year-old document also confirms that we can be proud of our predecessors concerning our knowledge of kidney diseases and their application in daily use in Hungary, because in the past they were the ones who used the most advanced knowledge in their practices. One of today’s greatest challenges for us is to be able to inform healthy and ill people alike properly about kidney diseases and their prevention or management. Place this in order to stem the epidemic of chronic renal failure and still pay homage to this disease’s greatest scientist, Richard Bright. Orv. Hetil., 2011, 152, 1623–1626.

Abstract:
The death penalty is not an act of self-defense against an immediate threat to life. It is the premeditated killing of a prisoner who could be dealt with equally well by less harsh means. There can never be a justification for torture or for cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment or punishment. The cruelty of the death penalty is evident. Like torture, an execution constitutes an extreme physical and mental assault on a person already rendered helpless by government authorities. The most common justification offered is that, terrible as it is, the death penalty is necessary: it may be necessary only temporarily, but, it is argued, only the death penalty can meet a particular need of society. And whatever that need may be, it is claimed to be so great that it justifies the cruel punishment of death. The death penalty, as a violation of fundamental human rights, would be wrong even if it could be shown that it uniquely met a vital social need. What makes the use of the death penalty even more indefensible and the case for its abolition even more compelling is that it has never been shown to have any special power to meet any genuine social need.

Thommes, E., and K. Meisenheimer. "Number Density Predictions for Primeval Galaxies." Symposium - International Astronomical Union 171 (1996): 454. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s007418090023372x.

Full text
Abstract:
In the last two decades several methods have been employed to search for the ancestors of present day galaxies undergoing their first starburst at high redshift, the so-called “primeval galaxies” (PGs). According to predictions of the Ly-α flux from the PG phase current surveys for Ly-α bright PGs should have detected 101 − 103 PGs. Yet, no really good candidate has been found. One possible explanation for this discrepancy would be the presence of dust which could strongly suppress Ly-α. In fact, models of early galaxy formation are able to produce gas to dust ratios of about 1/10 solar after some 108 years. This would suppress the emerging Ly-α flux below current detection limits. Thus, to detect a PG in its Ly-α bright phase, one has to hit exactly the redshift of their first star formation. On the other hand, the epoch of galaxy formation is likely to extend over much longer time. So when searching a finite volume of the universe (given by the depth Δz and the field ΔΩ), the protogalaxies are not simultaniously in the Ly-α bright PG phase and only a fraction of them exceed the detection limit. Our new attempt to predict the expected number of PGs takes this reduced propability into account. Further contraints of the Ly-α luminosity were derived from recent observations and theoretical work (for details see E.Thommes & K.Meisenheimer in Galaxies in the Young Universe, Eds. H.Hippelein et al., Springer-Verlag, 1995, p.242). As expected, we find that the number density of Ly-α emitting PGs is drastically reduced in comparison to previous predictions. Thus previous surveys had no realistic chance to find them. Nevertheless, our calculations also show, that the detection of Ly-α bright PGs is in the scope of present day techniques. Specifically, we predict that the Calar-Alto-Deep-Imaging-Survey (see contribution of H. Hippelein et. al., these proc.) which will search for Ly-α in an area of ≈ 0.3□° down to a limiting line flux of 3 × 10−20W/m2 should detect 10 … 100 PGs in three redshift intervals Δz = 0.1. The uncertainty accounts for our ignorance of q0 and the unknown epoch of galaxy formation.

Abstract:
Marriage rates in twenty-first-century Britain are historically low, divorce and separation are historically high, and marriage is no longer generally seen as necessary for legitimate sexual relationships, long-term partnership or even parenting. Yet at the same time weddings have become more prominent, both as social aspiration and as popular culture. But why have a wedding, especially an ornate, expensive and time-consuming wedding, when there appears to be little social need to do so? Similarly, weddings have never been more free from cultural norms and official control – so why do these supposedly unique and deeply personal events usually replay the same assumed traditions? We draw from a small qualitative sample of 15 interviews with white, heterosexual celebrants to address these questions. While existing accounts posit weddings as a social display of success, emphasizing distinction, and manipulation by a powerful wedding industry, we argue that weddings involve celebrants necessarily adapting from, and re-serving, tradition as a process of bricolage. This shapes the four major discourses interviewees used to give meanings to their weddings: the project of the couple, relationality, re-traditionalization and romanticized consumption. At the same time many couples did not want to be distinctively unique, but rather distinctively normal. This is what we call ‘individualized conformity’.

One day the teacher say to write a paper about how life be different from the time a the early settlers, so I do. The next day she give it back to me with a red pen mark all over it. She say she want me to learn to speak English. I thought I was. I thought I be sayin' somethin' about how hard life is for me just like it be for the Mayflower people. I got to deal with the freezin' winter and no food and people hackin' and coughin' in my face at home. I got to deal with attacks from other gangs, you know. The only thing I learned that day is how to look like a fool in front of the class who be laughin' when the teacher read my paper out loud. I never went back after that. So what? School never teach me how to live today and I don't care how they live a hundred year ago … The only thing school teach me is how to feel stupid and I got my father for that.

Abstract:
Watching Deep Space Nine was an exercise in peering around corners and being unable to get a straight-on view of what I knew to be just beyond my field of vision. Not necessarily in terms of the greater world of the Star Trek universe – that I could see much more easily, as DS9 is still the only Star Trek series that took the time to consider what day-to-day life would be like in the greater world of the show outside of Federation starships thanks to it being set on a space station, boldly parking instead of going – but very specifically, in regards to Julian Bashir. The show’s primary medical character, a bright young doctor straight out of Starfleet Academy, who quickly learns there’s more to his mission than he thought while never losing any of his dedication or kindness. I’ve read about Alexander Siddig’s portrayal of Bashir, of his work turning him from someone deliberately unlikable into one of Star Trek’s beloved characters. I’m familiar with Bashir’s backstory and growth, his canonical developmental disorder and his transformation from fresh-faced graduate to hardened, mature officer. And throughout it all, I’ve always wondered, did they mean for him to sound like me?

Abstract:
This essay blends the biographies of three Latinas — Luisa Capetillo, Luisa Moreno, and Viridiana Martínez — who combated social and economic injustice in the US South. By uniting the lives of these women, who lived during distinct eras and never physically met, this piece illustrates that neither the history nor the presence of Latinas/os is new to the region and that many of the challenges present-day activists face are similar to the injustices Latinas and Latinos fought in the early twentieth century. It argues that to fully understand the region, including its complicated histories of race, gender, and politics, scholars must join the narratives of Latinas/os who immigrated to southern states during earlier eras with the stories of recent arrivals.

Abstract:
Abstract From Normandy combat veterans, we obtained narrative evidence on the experiences of loss and grief associated with their involvement in the invasion in France, June 6, 1944. Twelve veterans were interviewed in person in Nor-mandy at the time of the 1994 reunion, and 31 were subsequently interviewed by telephone. We present veterans' reports of battle experiences on D-Day and how they believe those experiences were manifest in psychological reactions over the last 50 years. Our analysis of these reports is framed by a theoretical conception that emphasizes the value of developing and communicating story-like constructions, which we refer to as accounts, as a constructive way of psychologically coping with severe stressors and loss over time. Most of the veterans reported lifelong grieving associated with their losses at Normandy. This grief recurred for most on anniversary dates and when thinking of war and death in general. For some, it was manifest in compelling, regular thoughts about the loss of their friends and their firsthand experiences of loss during the D-Day fighting. Many veterans also reported years of depression associated with their war experience. Some indicated that they kept their stories and feelings mostly private over the half century, and only now, around the time of the commemoration, did they open up. Veterans who indicated that they coped best with their trauma over time emphasized the healing power of working on and telling their stories to close others. (Grief Work, Social and Clinical Psy-chology) "These are the fathers we never knew, the uncles we never met, the friends who never returned, the heroes we can never repay."-President Bill Clinton speak-ing at the American cemetery near Omaha Beach, Normandy, France, June 6, 1994. "I don't think there's a day that goes by that I don't think and grieve about it. When you think about it, you think it was just yesterday. It's so clear in my mind. I'll never forget."-Normandy combat veteran, age 74, reflecting on his experience during the D-Day invasion.

Abstract We report a case of hairy cell leukemia variant developing in a background of polycythemia vera in a 77-year-old man who presented with lymphocytosis and splenomegaly. Classic hairy cell leukemia in a patient with polycythemia vera has been reported previously, but hairy cell leukemia variant arising in a patient with polycythemia vera has never been described to the best of our knowledge. Initial testing of the peripheral blood showed circulating medium to large leukemic cells with large, centrally placed nuclei, each containing a prominent nucleolus, and some cells showed cytoplasmic projections. A bone marrow biopsy had marked myeloid and erythroid hyperplasia and interstitially distributed cells with a fried-egg appearance. We verified a monoclonal B-cell population by flow cytometric analysis, which revealed expression of bright CD11c, CD22, and CD103 expression, and a lack of CD25 expression. The patient received a 5-day course of cladribine and subsequently had a complete remission. Approximately 2 months later, he had a relapse and was treated with pentostatin; however, he had no clinical response and died.

I have only once seen witchcraft on its path. I had been sitting late in my hut writing notes. About midnight, before retiring, I took a spear and went for my usual nocturnal stroll. I was walking in the garden at the back of my hut, amongst banana trees, when I noticed a bright light passing at the back of my servants' huts towards the homestead of a man called Tupoi. As this seemed worth investigation I followed its passage until a grass screen obscured the view. I ran quickly through my hut to the other side in order to see where the light was going to, but did not regain sight of it. I knew that only one man, a member of my household, had a lamp that might have given off so bright a light, but next morning he told me that he had neither been out late at night nor had he used his lamp. There did not lack ready informants to tell me that what I had seen was witchcraft. Shortly afterwards, on the same morning, an old relative of Tupoi and an inmate of his homestead died. This event fully explained the light I had seen. I never discovered its real origin, which was possibly a handful of grass lit by some one on his way to defecate, but the coincidence of the direction along which the light moved and the subsequent death accorded well with Zande ideas (Evans-Pritchard 1937: 34).

In May 1741, an anonymous Yorkshire Methodist sent George Whitefield a long letter in which he recorded the details of his nine-year-old daughter’s evangelical conversion. Within a fortnight the letter was printed in The Weekly History, the magazine which had become the official mouthpiece of the Calvinistic wing of the Evangelical Revival by this point. Here is how Whitefield began his account: We have a little daughter about nine years old; one Lord's Day in the last winter, when she staid at home, she read one of your journals, and afterwards some sermons of yours we had got from London. It pleased God by his Holy Spirit so to impress her mind as is very remarkable. She desires me to tell Mr Whitefield (that sweet minister of Jesus Christ) what she has met with in reading his book, she says, such a change of Heart, that she can now pray to God, and converse with his people in such a manner as she could never do before that day. She is of a sprightly brisk temper, yet if she be never so much engaged in work or play, if she hears any body talk of you, or things relating to religion, she will come and hear, and put in her word about it.

Abstract:
Church history has tended to trace the development of doctrine, either orthodox or heretical, canonical or anti-canonical. This paper, however, examines ‘para-canonical’ ideas, those which develop alongside the canonical – not quite heretical, but not fully orthodox either. Canonical norms, while constant in principle, have always been subject in practice to multiple understandings. Most of these shifting understandings, among groups or individuals, are fleeting and can never be recovered; this is why the history of the reception of canonical norms is so elusive. But for the social historian of religion, reception is often more interesting than the norms themselves. What actually ‘trickles down’ from what the bishops teach? This paper will maintain that some record of how things ‘trickled down’ is preserved in para-canonical religious texts, commonly known as ‘apocryphal’ literature. It considers various ways in which the canonical norms of the Greek Orthodox Church concerning the Lord’s Day were understood in a specific time and place: medieval Byzantium, between the ninth and the twelfth centuries. This was a crucial formative period for Orthodox Church culture, both Greek and Slav, during which ritual and moral attitudes that still obtain today were being worked out.

The colors should be bright then, provided the wearer is not too large. The colors, in a costume, should be so distributed that a balance is achieved. When the top is light, the other part may be dark but the darkness should be present in the lighter area as a contrast. One should always keep in mind that the wearer should be the centre of interest and the costume a background. In order that the costume may be beautiful its color should be balanced or keyed and the entire color scheme should be related to the coloring of the individual. The aim in choosing colors for individual types should be to select those which will bring out the persons best points and subdue the less attractive ones.

AbstractAn extremely weak circularly-polarized signature was recently detected in the spectral lines of the Am star Sirius A. With a prominent positive lobe, the shape of the phase-averaged Stokes V line profile is atypical of stellar Zeeman signatures, casting doubts on its magnetic origin. We report here on ultra-deep spectropolarimetric observations of two more bright Am stars: β Uma and θ Leo. Stokes V line signatures are detected in both objects, with a shape and amplitude similar to the one observed on Sirius A. We demonstrate that the amplitude of the Stokes V line profiles depend on various line parameters (Landé factor, wavelength, depth) as expected from a Zeeman signature, confirming that extremely weak magnetic fields are likely present in a large fraction of Am stars. We suggest that the strong asymmetry of the polarized signatures, systematically observed so far in Am stars and never reported in strongly magnetic Ap stars, bears unique information about the structure and dynamics of the thin surface convective shell of Am stars.

The middle english pearl is one of the most moving and beautiful poems ever composed. occasioned, it seems, by the death of a two-year-old daughter, whose identity has never been determined, it casts the grieving narrator-father as one who has treasured the child as a jewel beyond compare. She was round and smooth, rare and radiant—a precious pearl fit for a prince. Yet this dear small thing just slipped away one day in the garden, tumbling down through the grass into the dark earth:Perle, plesaunte to prynces payeTo clanly clos in golde so clere,Oute of oryent, I hardyly saye,Ne proved I never her precious pere.So rounde, so reken in uche arayeSo smal, so smothe her sydes were,Quere-so-ever I jugged gemmes gaye,I sette hyr sengeley in synglere.Allas! I leste hyr in on erbere;Thurgh gresse to grounde hit fro me yot.I dewyne, fordolked of luf-daungereOf that pryvy perle wythouten spot. (lines 1-12)Pearl, pleasing and delightful for a prince to enclose in fine gold: of all those from the orient, I declare that I never knew one as precious. So round, so radiant in every setting; so small, so smooth her sides were; wherever I judged beautiful gems, I appraised her as singularly rare. Alas! I lost her in a garden; through grass to ground it sped from me. I mourn, overcome with love-longing for my own precious, spotless pearl. As this opening stanza reveals, Pearl relies on the polyvalence and sensuous power of poetic language for its affective effects, gathering associative resonance through shifting meanings, working through indirection and allusiveness, tapping into the sensory power of visual and tactile images and patterned sound, and leaving much unsaid, to be grasped and felt between the lines. But the poem's broad emotional arc is clear. It scripts a therapeutic narrative of affective experience, taking its reader, whom it enfolds within the textual “I” of the poem, from “woe” to “weal” (56, 1187).

The rise of theft, loss and embezzlement of motorbikes in the city of Medan is never ending even no longer a public secret, every day there are always reports of motorcycle loss in the Old Deli Police Station for that the writer feels interested in doing a study about the theft of the motorcycle. The method used in this study is normative juridical and analytical descriptive. Judge's consideration in examining cases of embezzlement has incriminating and mitigating matters. The aggravating thing is that the Defendant's actions can disturb the community and the mitigating thing is that the Defendant admitted frankly his actions and regretted them and the Defendant has never been punished. Efforts made by law enforcers against motorcycle embezzlement are preventive measures, which are efforts that prevent acts or criminal offenses occurring both institutionally and in coordination with the local community. Abstract:
The literature on organisational culture suggests that ceremonies or rituals reinforce control. By contrast, this article contributes to the literature on resistance, culture and ceremony by arguing that ceremony can also be understood as a form of resistance. It does so through drawing on ethnographic research, first, to explore how a ceremonial 1-day rally during an academic dispute was productive for frontline employee resistance (ceremony as resistance). Second, it considers how such resistance can also be productive in generating consent, for it is infused with and reproduces established norms, subjectivities and power relations (resistance as ceremony). Finally, it is asserted that resistance can be productive in fostering a subjectivity characterised by stability and instability and so practices such as a rally are necessary to try to stabilise both the organisation and the subjectivity of resistance. The article therefore illustrates the ambiguity of productive resistance which has been neglected to date. These insights and arguments indicate that all forms of workplace resistance are decaf, for they are imbued with the context and norms through which they arise. Nevertheless, resistance remains dangerous for those in positions of authority because it means that power is never totalising and so outcomes continue to be uncertain.

As well as people who think that the existence of street vendors in urban areas can be said to be irregular, in general they are not orderly and dirty because they sell on sidewalks, in city parks, even on roads, so that they become or cause traffic jams or damage the beauty of the city. Tourist Sydney has never been the same as workaday Sydney – the harbour, beaches, city centre, the Blue Mountains and national parks to the north and south loomed disproportionately large in the tourist gaze, while vast swathes of suburbia were invisible.

What if the window of our cars is a magic window, which transforms dark views outside of the window at night into bright ones as we can see in the daytime? To realize such a window, one of important requirements is that the stream of transformed images displayed on the window should be of high quality so that users perceive it as real scenes in the day. Although image-to-image translation techniques based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have been widely studied, night-to-day image translation is still a challenging task. In this paper, we propose Daydriex, a processing pipeline to generate enhanced daytime translation focusing on road views. Our key idea is to supplement the missing information in dark areas of input image frames by using existing daytime images corresponding to the input images from street view services. We present a detailed processing flow and address several issues to realize our idea. Our evaluation shows that the results by Daydriex achieves lower Fréchet Inception Distance (FID) scores and higher user perception scores compared to those by CycleGAN only.

What was particularly striking to me was that my correspondent began his letter by saying that he had never written to an archaeologist before, and could not resist the temptationto do so now. I replied that I was somewhat surprised that archaeologists could still have such a curiosity value; it had been my impression that we had become so relatively common during the last two decades as not to attract much more notice than many other professions. Ugo Fantozzi was given life by author and actor Paolo Villaggio in the late 1960s. Inarguably a staple figure within Italian comedy and society, this character remains relevant in modern-day society despite the last film being released in 1999. The Italianità of the Fantozzi series, partially based on people from Villaggio’s life, is unmistakeable. In this article, the Fantozzi films are analysed to show how Fantozzi can be considered so uniquely Italian through many of the themes, dialogue and references to society and culture, yet, at the same time, a universal comedic figure who shares many traits with very well-known and well-regarded British and American television comedy series. Fantozzi, however, never made it to English-speaking shores. While it is likely we will never know the success the franchise could have had, this article shows that it had every possibility of being a success.

The sound of its bleating in the trunk reminded me of trips to weddings, when sheep are also obligatory gifts.

Abstract:
This narrative-critical study of Acts proposes that Luke has deliberately arranged events so that the discussion about circumcising baptised Gentiles is postponed for as long as possible. When the issue does surface, it is raised by a delegation of second-wave Christians from the sect of the Pharisees. These factors combined give the impression that circumcision of Gentiles, a matter long settled by Luke's own day, had never been original, favourable or sanctioned by God or the apostles. By portraying the movement to circumcise Gentiles as belated, extrinsic and pernicious, Luke's representation of difference in the church resembles that of later heresiologists.

Abstract:
It is a well-known fact that the expansion of Internet has given rise to many daily activities which are being done online including financial and personal data transactions which has developed the need of security like never before. It has made people realize that the data on the internet must be secured as many types of attacks are increasing day by day with the advancement of technology. So, here the requirement is to ensure that the services are supplied to a legitimate user rather than bots to prevent service abuse. The present article provides such a security from bots with the help of a standard security mechanism called CAPTCHA. A new cognition-based design of CAPTCHA is produced overcoming the limitation of presently available CAPTCHA. Also, a new architecture for producing these CAPTCHA codes randomly is presented in this article so that the differentiation among a legitimate user and Bots can be made. Thus, the major objective of the article is to present an optimum security mechanism for differentiating among humans and Bots.

Abstract:
23 Background: Survey studies have determined the prevalence of dissatisfaction among survivor caregivers related to end of life care. Toward improvement in care at EOL, we hypothesized that novel themes of distress would be identified in narratives of the “last day” from the recently bereaved. Methods: Extended narrative accounts of patients’ last day of life were collected from adult, English-speaking, caregivers (n=5) present at the death of a cancer patient. Interviews (45-120 minutes) featured open-ended questions prompting the subject to share an account of the last day, their care and coping experience. Interviews were conducted and transcribed by the author and analyzed thematically. Results: A theme of distressed communication with health care providers [HCP] could be identified in narrative segments in all 5 interviews, linked to transitions such as changes in treatment or clinical status. Narrative fragments exemplary of distress arising from communication are presented. I. A pain crisis so severe “she asked God to take her.” “I am ready to call the nurse practitioner…and she wouldn’t allow it... She doesn’t want to be a burden.” II. “I said, I don’t want you telling him directly anything. I want you to tell me first so we can go in together and tell him…the right way” including an option to “spend time together.” Soon after, the physician “came rushing into the room and as if we’d never had the conversation…, OK, we’re going to take you to the ICU.” III. “I had asked the nurse…to make sure that she had her clothes on when the funeral parlor came.” It was “important to me for her dignity.” The nurse responded: “they just cut the clothes off anyhow.” IV. “Now you’re going to pull chemo out of your hat? Look at him!...He doesn’t want to leave us but he’s ready to go.” “After we said no to chemo, [his doctor] never came near S again.” Conclusions: This pilot study of last day narratives obtained from surviving caregivers points toward a high prevalence of distress content relating to impaired communication with HCP with consequences including uncontrolled pain, conflict, perceived loss of dignity and abandonment. These data indicate the need for larger-scale studies focused on the content and style of bidirectional communication at the EOL.

Abstract:
Abstract In the aftermath of the 1989 Revolution, Romanian mainstream culture set out to reclaim the pre- Communist legacy of the country. The ‘golden age’ of interwar was the obvious choice; both popular and academic debates on Romanian identity looked back at the time of the so-called Greater Romania. The present day Suceava County is singular in its regional identification with the former Habsburg Duchy of Bukovina. The Austrian occupation of the Northern part of the historical principality of Moldova between 1775 and 1918 provides an identity building opportunity to the locals who seem to find fault with Moldovan regional designation. Bukovina comes into the picture of the hospitality industry mostly, yet there is more to the Bukovinian identification. The literature published by Suceava County Council appears to employ a marketing strategy for the same hospitality industry that dwells on what is, essentially, the colonial past of the area. At odds with Romanian self-identification, the narrative of Bukovina underpins the discourse of local government as a means to foster brand awareness for the entire county, although Southern Suceava was never incorporated into the Habsburg/Austro- Hungarian Empire

Abstract:
Lease accounting will never be the same again. The endorsement of IFRS 16 on November 2017 sets out new rules for the recognition and measurement of the lease. The new standard removes the lessee’s distinction between operating and financial lease and it will have a substantial impact for companies have previously kept a large proportion of their financing off balance sheets. Under IAS 17 companies have exploited a financial accounting loophole by structuring lease transactions as operating leases, favouring opportunistic behaviours by managers and distorting the investors’ perception of the disclosure. IFRS 16 removes the so-called bright lines companies used to avoid capitalisation of leases and turns any attempt to hide lease liabilities off the balance sheet into a futile exercise to improve transparency of information. The purpose of this research is to analyse the potential impact of the new accounting rules on key financial ratios of Italian listed companies using a refined constructive capitalisation method. The results of the study show that the reflection of the operating leases on the balance sheet shall cause a significant increase in the assets and liabilities and for this reason, there shall be a significant effect on the main debt, liquidity and profitability ratios.

Abstract:
An Enthusiastic Group of Romanians gathered in Sibiu at the 1905 annualassembly of Astra, the largest Romanian cultural association in Transylvania, to celebrate their nation and their future. Moved by the gathering and the festivities, the editor of the association's paper, Transilvania, expressed a hope he and thousands of his compatriots shared: “Never before has this people been in a more favorable position as a superiorethnic element, as an important factor of civilization, and as a gifted nation with vitality, character, and great talents that guarantee it a bright future and a distinguished place among the peoples of eastern Europe.”1 Like many prominent Romanians of his time, the editor firmlybelieved that his nation would enjoy equal status with other European national groups in the near future. Equal standing had been a central goal of theRomanian intellectuals and clergy who founded the Transylvanian Associationfor Romanian Literature and the Culture of the Romanian People, or Astra, in 1861. Since the eighteenth century, Romanian elites in Transylvania had worked to obtain recognition for their national community so that they couldparticipate fully in the political life of the region. Two centuries later Astra members still hoped they were on the verge of forming a Romanian nation that could achieve the right to control its own destiny.

How do you get two solo information professionals in two separate small island jurisdictions to give one presentation, talking as one? Especially two who had never met together until the day before they were due to give the presentation at the 2005 BIALL conference in Harrogate The way this came about neatly sums up what it is like to be an information professional in a small jurisdiction. You spend a long time on the telephone and email, you take the initiative, collaborate, share ideas and bring out the best in each other. In short, you reach out beyond your little island, because not to do so means not to operate effectively.
