Abstract:
This thesis, the first study of Nevile Henderson to be completed at doctoral level in the UK, takes a fresh look at Henderson's controversial role in Berlin between 1937 and 1939. It begins by re-examining Henderson's controversial appointment to the Berlin Embassy, and contends that a close study of his earlier career (especially in Belgrade between 1929 and 1935) help to explain those aspects of his behaviour that gave rise to criticism. After close analysis of published and unpublished Foreign Office documents, the thesis challenges the traditional view that Henderson favoured the Anschluss and the dismemberment of Czechoslovakia in 1938. It also re-examines the charge that he undermined British policy by making indiscreet remarks in Germany, and argues that his scepticism about the anti-Nazi opposition was fully justified. And that he did, to a degree, carry out his 'warning' function in Berlin. Another key aspect concerns the extent to which Henderson's line in Berlin had support in the Foreign Office, and the re-consideration of his pivotal relationships with Chamberlain and Halifax. Particular attention is paid to the decision to send Henderson (by then a seriously ill man) back to Berlin in February 1939. The author's overall view is that, given Henderson's flawed analysis of the Nazi regime, a totally revisionist analysis of his time in Berlin would be untenable. The main conclusions are (a) that Henderson's influence on British policy has been exaggerated and (b) that he has been unfairly treated by historians. This thesis seeks to redress the historical balance by presenting the first close analysis, and rounded account, of what Henderson called the 'failure of a mission'.

Abstract:
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior
This work presents and discusses the extension of traditional Aristotelian syllogistics carried out by John Neville Keynes in the beginning of the twentieth century, through the introduction of a notation for negative terms into logical theory. The primary bibliography used was the fourth edition, dated 1906, of the Keynes‟s textbook on Logic Studies and Exercises in Formal Logic . Keynes has an extensional interpretation of the use of negative terms: they are understood as an extensional complement of the corresponding positive terms relative the universe of discourse; in this sense, his conception of the negation of terms obeys the Principle of Excluded Middle. The extension of traditional syllogistics by the addition of negative terms also leads to an extension of the number logical relations among the categorical propositions, as well as the number of valid immediate inferences. The Square of Oppositions is transformed into an Octagon of Oppositions, to which three new logical relations between the categorical propositions are added, namely, complementarity, sub-complementarity and contra-complementarity; the validity of these new logical relations does not require existential presupposition of any of the involved terms. Regarding immediate inferences, besides the conversion process, three new types of formal processes are obtained: obversion, contraposition (partial and total) and inversion (partial and total). To prove the validity of these formal processes, as well as of any syllogistic inference, Keynes lays out a diagrammatic method based on the well-known Euler method; in Keynes‟s method, however, negative terms are represented. In Keynes‟s version of Euler‟s diagrammatic method validity is understood as preservation of information: a collection of basic diagrams, corresponding to elementary information, is assigned to categorical propositions; and an inference is valid if, and only if, the diagrams assigned to the premises are also assigned to the conclusion.

Keeling, Brian Neville. "A critical analysis of global sustainability indices / Brian Neville Keeling." Thesis, North-West University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/10204.

Full text
Abstract:
Nation states of the world are driven by socio-economic imperatives that are rapidly degrading the natural resources that sustain life on Earth. This paradox has led to numerous initiatives to better understand and measure sustainability and sustainable development through indices. The primary objective of this research is to critically analyse the plethora of indices developed and used by institutions and organisations globally that have a role to play in measuring the sustainability and sustainable development of nation states, and distil the analysis into one integrated Sustainable Development Index (SDI) that compares all countries. A secondary objective is to review South Africa‟s response to measure sustainability and determine how well it performs compared to other nation states. A qualitative approach is used to review the literature in three steps, namely to consider the challenges of measuring what matters, to reflect on the response to govern and measure sustainability, and then to identify outcomes in terms of specific indices related to triple bottom line dimensions. The review considers the scope and level of integration of global indices as well as South Africa‟s response to measure sustainability. The analysis phase normalizes all the data to establish an integrated SDI for all countries, it then analyses and interprets the data to determine the variation and correlation between all the global indices, and then benchmarks countries and specifically South Africa. The review finds that twenty-one years after the Agenda 21 agreement at the Rio Earth Summit, no acceptable or established SDI has been developed and implemented by the United Nations, and the analysis develops two options for an integrated SDI at nation state level. In terms of both these SDI‟s South Africa performs poorly from a benchmarked perspective. From both the nation state and global indices perspectives, the appraisal of the single integrated SDI finds significant variations in the results, coupled with a wide range of correlation outcomes which distil into well correlated single integrated SDIs. The findings indicate that recent SDI developments are moving towards human wellbeing indicators, however although environmental priorities are considered, they play a secondary role. This “inconvenient truth” alludes to a “business as usual” approach as the policy makers of the world continue to focus on short-term socio-economic imperatives. Environmental thresholds and “limits to growth” considerations need to be fundamental aspects of all SDIs. This argument continues by factoring thresholds and priorities into the triple bottom line dimensions - a Sustainability Intelligence Quotient is developed from the integrated SDI, which suggests that only two countries meet the requirements.

Lee, Cheongho. "CREATIVITY, POSSIBILITY AND INTERPRETATION: THEORY OF DETERMINATION OF PEIRCE AND NEVILLE." OpenSIUC, 2018. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/1576.

Full text
Abstract:
The central argument of this project is that meaningful and intelligible experience is conditioned by the determinate relationship between realms of reality, and that our humanity is grounded on the semiotic process of symbolic references, which is manifest in Charles S. Peirce’s and Robert C. Neville’s theories of determination. However they are contained by the past such processes of determination can be extended to the future through transformative effort. My investigation ranges over multiple paths that lead toward determinate processes, by suggesting that the problem of interpretation and of the intelligibility of experience can be solved only in reference to the full purview of determinate features of experience. In his theory of determination, Peirce considered two processes of determination, the semiotic process and epistemology. The semiotic process is an extensional process from object to interpretant that consists of an infinite chain of references that can be spatially reversible. The epistemological process of determination is temporal and irreversible, where the idea grows into the individual mind, as the universe is unfolded by the agency of mind. Peirce’s study of the logic of individuals of Duns Scotus is to find answers for the problem of individuality. For Peirce, God is individualized in the course of determination and at the same time determines all possible determinations. Due to his adopting the Scotian sense of necessity, Neville also adopts Duns Scotus’s logic of individuals to his theory of determination and valuation. As revealed in his theory of determination, in the ontological act of creation God becomes individual as a creator, an individual as the determiner of all possible determinations. In his theory of determination, Neville proposes modes of determination at the ontological level, as well as a collection of cosmological determinations. Neville works “inter-cosmologically” in order to account for the fundamental conditions of our knowing that brings ontological and cosmological determinations together. In their theory of interpretation, Peirce and Neville suggest a triadic system of semiotic network. Among other things, Neville provides a more sophisticated version of theory of interpretation, which involves realms of intelligibility. Both Peirce and Neville symbolism allows for the pragmatic semiotics based upon a brokenness of signs, which opens for further interpretation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this PhD thesis is to put the Spanish cinema situation in 1939. That year a new political and institutional era, which lasted until 1975, started as a result of a bloody civil war. This work aims to deepen the characteristics of Spanish film industry at that time, which of those characteristics remained after 1939 and which would change Spanish cinema forever. Furthermore, this research is about how some movies kept showing the patterns of old Spanish popular shows as "sainete","zarzuela" and "cuplé" even despite a heavy censorship and in an ideological background defined by a return to the essence of the hispanic ultraconservative XIX century thought. The thread to analyze all those continuities and ruptures is the work of Edgar Neville de Romrée, Count of Berlanga de Duero (Madrid, 1899-1967) who was a producer and moviemaker in addition to screenwriter, “metteur en scene”, humorist, writer and diplomat. He succeeded to maintain certain tendencies and aesthetic trends from the republican era, on spite of adverse circumstances and even during the worst moments of Franco´s regime and its reactionary ideology. The subject of this thesis is to analyze Edgar Neville´s movies from a political and sociological perspective since his first in 1931 to 1945, paying special attention to cultural and media backgrounds and to the cultural industries he was fueled of. Similarly, and unlike other Neville´s work approaches this thesis focused on his Italian period (1939-1941), the months he spent living in Rome and his three Italian co-produced feature films.

Full text
Abstract:
Spinal disc replacements have the fundamental goal of pain relief while prolonging lifespan of adjacent intervertebral discs. This study focuses on reducing magnetic resonance (MR) artefacts, thereby improving the post–operative imaging qualities of the Kineflex cervical disc arthroplasty. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used to evaluate the success of the resulting design, as it provides the greatest distinction between various cellular types, and is the technique of choice for spinal diagnosis. Initial research includes a survey of the most recent findings regarding cervical kinematics, the pathology of degenerative disc disease, treatments of cervical myelopathy and radiculopathy, and the complications associated with total disc replacement. The influence of modern imaging techniques and the properties of common biomaterials are investigated to obtain the basis for development Reducing the occurrence of MR artefacts is achieved through material selection and design adaptation. Various biomaterials used in spinal applications are evaluated for their clinical performance. Smaller artifacts are achieved by replacement of cobalt–chromium–molybdenum (CCM) of the original device, with a combination of polyether–ether–ketone (PEEK) and titanium due to a lower magnetic susceptibility Testing of the device is performed in two phases: verification and validation. The prototype device is successfully verified by means of MR, computed tomography (CT) and fluoroscopy imaging of a human cadaver spine with the device in the C5–6 position. Successful verification of the prototype warranted further development. After reviewing manufacturing techniques, validation is achieved on a production–ready device to characterise the MR signature of the end product. Artefact area is reduced from 1842mm² to 242mm², allowing for visibility of both spinal nerve roots and adjacent intervertebral discs. The spinal canal remains affected by encroachment of artefacts by 2–3mm, but the improvement in imaging signature over the existing CCM device is significant. The resulting Kineflex product is expected to find considerable application in industry.

Abstract:
The notion of 'race' was central to the thinking about and administration of Aboriginal affairs in the 1930s, but its meaning was fluid. In many respects Auber Octavius Neville, senior bureaucrat in Western Australia from 1915-1940 and a national figure in Aboriginal affairs during that period, was emblematic of the race thinking of the period. This study looks at the Western Australian Moseley Royal Commission of 1934, the Western Australian Parliamentary debates and legislation of 1929 and 1936, the Canberra Conference of Commonwealth and State Aboriginal Authorities in 1937, and Neville's 1947 book, Australia's Coloured Minority - for their exemplification of race thinking. Basic incompatibilities and inconsistencies, as evidenced in Neville's thinking and action across his career, were common in the period. Neville's central administrative desire was to force biological absorption to its ultimate conclusion - the 'Destiny' of Aborigines of the part descent was to be absorbed biologically into the white community. He used scientific support to 'prove' the 'safety' of this strategy. The central premise of Neville's race thinking, however, was that some form of racial essentialism would always negatively impact upon the 'absorption' of Aborigines into white Australia. Other major figures differed with Neville over the suitability of absorption, notably Queensland Chief Protector, J. W. Bleakley, but still believed in some essential 'Aboriginal-ness'. The thesis also traces Neville's attempts to dominate Aboriginal affairs both in the construction of the 'problem' and in proclaiming solutions. Neville was absolutely certain that his solution was the only way forward. This certainty, when added to the inconsistent notions of race that informed his conceptualisation of the 'problem', produced policies and practices of insurmountable internal contradictions that have profoundly affected generations of Aborigines.

Abstract:
This master thesis is a subjective reflection based on proper selfreflection during my work on performances Nevina and Erection of the heart. It is not a theoretical study but more an understanding and defining of my own ways of searching between a dramatic character of Absolut and function of a performer. In first part I analyze the performance Nevina directed by Petra Tejnorová. I present some conditions and forms of realisation a live cinema project. In next chapter I point out names of all the dramatic characters with their description from my point of view and I search connections and facts of a dramatic character of Absolut, that is communicating me the text. Then I am reflecting the dramatic character from my point of view with my own imagination. I analyse all the dramatic situations in which Absolut is present and I present the ways to get to her own emotions. I search connections between emotions and experiences of a dramatic character and my own. I find out the importance of knowing what I am performing and at the same time I find out the importance of a fact that a dramatic character should not know what is he performing at the same time. I analyze a searching of a „mask“ for a scenic adaptation of being blind and I mention a part from my own notes based on my own experimentation with vision. I clarify technical requirements for an actor to work with during the realization: a camera, a microphone – microport, space and I mention the importance of the fusion of actor with this technical issues. I am reflecting the truthfulness, certainty and authenticity of film acting. In the second part I am mentioning experiences of working on school performances with directors during my studies on the accademy and I mention reasons of importance of searching for an own topic. I am analyzing the creative process of Erection of the heart directed by Petra Tejnorová. In next chapters I uncover the creative process – contact improvisation and searching of my own topic. I analyze the ways of touching the core of my own topic and I mention the final version of my monologue in this performance. I outline my own reflections – possibilities and rules of a way to get in touch with a spectator. I realise the possibilities of a performer while knowing the possible winning and loosing during the playing. I mention a reaction of one spectator after seeing our show. In the end I answer myself a question if the authenticity of an actor is changing while he is telling someone else's story or his own thoughts and oppinions.

Wright, Nevil Ian. "Ecological impacts of Highveld gerbils (Tatera Brantsii) on a rehabilitated ash disposal site / Nevil Ian Wright." Thesis, North-West University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/1246.

Full text
Abstract:
Tatera brantsii was numerically dominant in the small mammal community on the plateaux of the rehabilitated ash disposal sites of ESKOM's Hendrina Power Station in 1998 and 1999 (Vermaak 2000). The species seemed well adapted to exploit this environment and, through biopedturbation, had altered the topsoil structure and chemistry. The consequences of this and other activities also affected the rehabilitated plant community of the PFA-dam habitat. Burrowing appeared limited to just under the topsoil layer, and seemed more extensive than burrows of this species in natural ecosystems. The burrow system architecture was mapped and quantified, and localised increases in nitrates, phosphorous and organic carbon in immediately associated substrate were noted. However, this substrate enrichment was transient, and disappeared following the abandonment, and subsequent collapse of burrow systems, when gerbil colonies migrated away from the area. The mixing of soil horizons also resulted in a more homogeneous substrate, which was more friable, and thus drier. The high pH and salinity of the topsoil layer in areas undisturbed by gerbil burrowing, and concentrations of particular elements associated with either the topsoil covering or the ash, were reduced as a consequence of substrate mixing in disturbed areas. Gerbil impacts on the substrate of this habitat seemed to promote pedogenesis, eliminating the sharp distinction between the topsoil covering and the ash below, but the re-exposed ash of the burrow mounds would become subject to erosion, and reduce the effectiveness of the rehabilitation effort. Gerbil activities increased the number of plant species, especially ruderal forbs, comprising the plant community of the PFA-dam habitat, but plant community diversity was not significantly increased. However, numerical dominance by few tussock grass species was diminished , possibly reflecting burial under mounds of excavated substrate. The biomass and cover of some grass species were reduced in areas of gerbil impacts, and plant lifecycles appeared to be completed sooner in areas affected by gerbil activities. These effects may be as a result of the drier substrate produced following the collapse of the extensive network of abandoned burrows. The succession of this plant community towards an underutilised grassland state, the expected outcome of the rehabilitation effort, was minimally affected by gerbil activities. The effects of T.brantsii activities in this PFA-dam habitat were not as distinct as the effects noted by other authors studying fossorial rodent impacts in less disturbed habitats. This could be because further disturbances in this habitat would merely add to the currently disturbed state, whereas disturbance in more natural habitats, would show more of a change from the initial state.

Burt, Rodney Michael. "The geology of Ben Nevis, South-west Highlands, Scotland." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/9766.

Abstract:
The Ben Nevis volcanic-plutonic Complex was intruded into garnet grade Precambrian metasediments in the Southwest Highlands of Scotland towards the end of the Caledonian Orogeny. A variety of techniques have been applied to the Ben Nevis Complex in order to model its volcanic and plutonic evolution; these include: field mapping, petrography, mineral chemistry, whole rock major and trace element geochemistry and a combined study of the isotopes of neodymium and strontium. Rocks of the volcanic pile are subdivided into the following formations; the Allt a' Mhuillin formation, the Coire na Ciste formation, the Ledge Route formation and the Summit formation, and these overlie a basement of Dalradian schist. Fine grained metasediments of the Allt a' Mhuillin formation were deposited in a lacustrine basin into which entered a series of non-volcanic mass flow units. Non-volcanic deposition was terminated with the entry of the first volcaniclastic lahars of the Coire na Ciste formation into the Ben Nevis basin. Block and ash flows, lava flows and sills are also found in this formation. The Ledge Route formation testifies to a complex period of quiescence, airfall deposition and mass flow movement after which localised flows of lava dominate the overlying Summit formation. A single felsite dyke is found intruding the volcanic pile and is correlated with early members of the Ben Nevis dyke swarm in the northern area of the Ben Nevis Complex. Plutonic rocks of the Ben Nevis Complex are subdivided into the Fine Quartz Diorite, Sgurr Finnisg-aig Quartz Diorite, Coarse Quartz Diorite, Porphyritic Outer Granite and Inner Granite; these were intruded to a high level in the crust. A dextral stress regime operated during the intrusion of the plutonic rocks. Each of the above units was intruded as a series of pulses. Mass balance and qualitative trace element vector modelling (Rayleigh crystallisation) is able to model the geochemical evolution of the Porphyritic Outer Granite using plagioclase, amphibole, biotite and magnetite as the fractionating assemblage. Pyroxene is found as a phenocryst and as a groundmass phase in the quartz diorites with calcic amphibole found mainly as a replacement mineral after pyroxene; however, trace element modelling identifies amphibole as a fractionating phase. Isotopic modelling of the Ben Nevis Complex indicates the involvement of at least three components; these being a mantle source, a lower crustal source with similar isotopic characteristics to the Islay-Colonsay-Basement and, of lesser importance, Dalradian metasediments. No single parental magma can explain the geochemical and isotopic variation of the Ben Nevis Complex.

Abstract:
First settlements in Southeast Anatolia begun to appear as early as 10000 BC. Among all the unanswered questions about this early period, cult-related activities and cult buildings are widely studied due to their nature, which has strong connections with the social organization and early symbolism. During the last decade, Southeast Anatolia has provided new evidence for this early stage of development in human history. This study aims to examine cult buildings that have common characteristics
how they were treated and distributed. The settlement of Nevali Ç
ori and its cult building is taken as an example and studied in detail. Other cult buildings with the same or similar architectural features are included in this study in order to discuss the roots, the distribution and the continuity of this Aceramic Neolithic tradition.

Abstract : The novel Il seme sotto la neve, written by Ignazio Silone (1900 ? 1978), was published for the first time in Germany, in 1941, by Verlag Oprecht, in Switzerland, and translated by Werner Johannes Guggenheim. For political reasons, the novel was prohibited from being published in Italy during Fascism, thus, its first publication was in Germany. The writer was exiled from Italy for some time and was unable to return to his home country later on since he was under threat of arrest for being against the country?s political regime. During the period of exile, Silone wrote Il seme sotto la neve, which was published in Italy in 1942. In Brazil, A semente sob a neve was first published by Brasiliense, and translated by Eglatina Santi. The second translation was published in 2001, by Germinal and translated by Wilson Hilário Borges. From these two translations, we made a comparative analysis which led to the conclusion that the second one is a plagiarism. Thus, the theoretical approach was based on Benjamin (2010), Derrida (2006), Ricoeur (2011), Lefevere (2007), Berman (2007) and Venuti (2002), and on concepts of pervivence, rewriting, domestication and foreignization. Through the analysis of some excerpts of the two novels, we concluded that the 2001 translation of A semente sob a neve is considered a plagiarism.

Abstract:
This study investigates the possibility of genetic diversity between geographically separated demes of Cercopithecus aethiops on the islands of St. Kitts and Nevis. The island of St. Kitts was represented by two geographic demes, one from the Northern tip of the island and one from the Southern tip of the island. The island of Nevis was considered as one separate deme.
Eight plasma proteins were analyzed with polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. A preliminary DNA investigation was also completed.
Three of the plasma proteins--transferrin, albumin, and an unidentified protein that migrated faster than albumin--appeared to be monomorphic. Three proteins in the alpha globulin region (between transferrin and albumin) and pseudocholinesterase were polymorphic in the total population. The DNA locus identified by the Human Molecular Fingerprinting #1 probe (locus D1Z2) was also polymorphic in all demes.
The levels of heterozygosity for North Island, South Island, and Nevis were 2.02%, 2.49%, and 2.49% respectively.
North and South Island demes were more similar to each other than either was to the Nevis deme. The South Island deme was more unlike Nevis than the North Island deme. These figures do not provide sufficient genetic evidence to evaluate divergence within the West Indian vervets according to geography.

Vlok, Nevil. "Rational approaches towards the design of (E)-8-(3-Chlorostyryl)-caffeine derivatives as novel reversible inhibitors of monoamine oxidase B / Nevil Vlok." Thesis, North-West University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/1017.

Full text
Abstract:
Reversible and selective inhibitors of monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) are under investigation for the treatment and prevention of Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease. The mechanism-based inactivator of MAO-B, (R)-deprenyl is frequently used in combination with L-dopa as dopamine replacement therapy in PD. In contrast with reversible inhibitors, following treatment with inactivators such as (R)- deprenyl, enzyme activity can only be regained via de novo synthesis of the MAO-B protein. For these reasons, several studies are currently under way to develop safer inhibitors of MAO-B. The purpose of this study is to develop a pharmacophore model for reversible MAO-B inhibition by studying the stereoelectronic properties of several (E)-8- (substituted-styryl)caffeine analogues. This class of compounds was selected as model compounds since (E)-8-(3-chlorostyryl) caffeine (CSC) was recently found to be a high potency competitive inhibitor of MAO-B. (4-8-(substituted-styry1)caffeine analogues are also known to be potent antagonists of the adenosine A2A-receptor subtype. Such antagonists are currently being investigated as possible therapeutic agents for the symptomatic treatment of motor deficits such as those encountered in PD. Since MAO-B inhibitors are currently under investigation as preventative agents in PD, the possibility of designing dual acting antiparkinsonian drugs that can act both as A2A antagonists and inhibitors of MAO-B may be of value. In PD such dual acting drugs could potentially enhance motility through antagonism of A2A receptors and protect against further neurodegenerative processes, through inhibition of MAO-B. In this study novel (E)-8-(3-chlorostyry1)caffeine analogues were synthesized and evaluated in vitro as competitive inhibitors of MAO-B. The analogues selected were mono substituted with various functional groups on C-3 and C-4 of the styryl phenyl ring. The compounds were evaluated as competitive inhibitors of baboon liver MAO-B. Two different assays were followed to determine the inhibitory activity of the putative inhibitors. The first was a spectrophotometric assay that utilised MMTP, an analogue of the neurotoxin MPTP as substrate and the second was an HPLC method which utilised benzylamine as substrate. The potency of MAO-B inhibition by the synthesised inhibitors were expressed as the enzyme-inhibitor dissociation constant (Ki value) and ranged from 0.1 uM -1.5 uM. Molecular modelling studies were also carried out in order to establish a hypothesis for MAO-B inhibition by the CSC analogues. Such a pharmacophoric model may assist in future design and prediction of MAO-B inhibitors. The pharmacophore contains a hydrogen bond acceptor, two hydrophobic points as well as area for an aromatic ring. In order to determine specific interactions between the inhibitor and the enzyme the compounds were docked into the crystal structure of the MAO-B enzyme. The 2 compounds with respectively the highest and lowest conformational docking scores were then dynamically minimised and the new conformations were docked into the active site. These computational studies indicated favourable interactions of the inhibitors with the enzyme and the flavin-adenine dinucleotide cofactor (FAD). The amino acids that surrounded the ligand were found to be: TYR60, TRPl19, LEU1 67, PHE168, VAL169, ASN170, LEU171, CYSH172, VAL173, THR174, PHEI 85, TYR188, PHE343, TYR398, TYR435 and FAD. Hydrogen bonds formed between GLN206 and N-1 and N- 7 of the xanthinyl moiety, as well as between TYR435 and N-9. Further analysis of the data supported the idea that the inhibitors should have a linear conformation, since inhibitors that were not linear exhibited weaker interactions with the enzyme. The results of a Hansch-type SAR study showed that the potency of MAO-B inhibition by (a-8-styrylcaffeinyl analogues depends upon the van der Waals volume (Vw), lipophylicity as well as the Swain-Lupton electronic parameter (F) of the substituents attached to C-3 of the styryl ring while the potency depends only upon descriptors of bulkiness (such as V,) and lipophylicity of substituents attached to C-4. In conclusion, the (a-8-(substituted-styry1)caffeine analogues represent a class of dual acting antiparkinsonian drugs that may both provide relief of the symptoms through interaction with adenosine A2A receptors and protect from further neurodegeneration through inhibition of MAO-B.

This thesis deals with narrative transformations of tales and legends from the earliest versions to written by the Brothers Grimm in the nineteenth century beginnings to the film versions of today, translate, preserve and reveal stories that attract, delight and educate for generations with its myths and archetype. This is because the fairy tales approximate poetically of human reality and constitute a strong presence in education and training of children. To achieve this was chosen the tale Snow White, recorded by the Brothers Grimm (1812) and adapted by Sousa Filho and Almeida Júnior (1950) and the film versions Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Disney - 1937), Snow White and the Hunter (Rupert Sanders - 2012) and My Mirror (Tarsem Singh - 2012). The survey was conducted with students from the 5th grade of elementary school and undergraduate students in education and degrees at the University of Brasilia, who experienced what we call narrative journey of this tale. We emphasize the cinema, as a very present language in the educational universe of teachers and students and its theoretical framework W. Benjamin, especially his thoughts in The Storyteller, about the importance of the fairy tale and the transformation of the act of narration, and ML Von Franz in The Interpretation of Fairy Tales, on the place occupied by the myths and archetypes in humanity, as well as for education, according to the vision of Carl Jung.

Abstract:
(RS) e Santa Catarina (SC), Brasil meridional.
This work analyzes the seasonal and spatial distribution of snow in Rio Grande do Sul (RS) and Santa Catarina (SC), southern Brazil. This analysis is based on the daily data and the Climatological Normals (1961-1990), coming from the local weather stations, maintained by the Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET), to obtain the basic climatological data (compensated monthly medium temperatures, minimum absolute temperatures and monthly pluviometric totals). To contextualize the study of this phenomenon, the characterization of the climate was prepared for the region. The total days of snow, averages and conventional percentages were compiled directly from INMET observations. In seasonal terms, the occurrence period extends from May to September, when the marine polar air mass (mP) has greater influence in the south of Brazil. The month of July concentrated most of the events, with more than 40% of the days of snow in most of the analyzed stations. The polar anticyclone has a fundamental role in the understanding this phenomenon, associating most of the events with continental passages of this atmospheric system. The highlands of southern Brazil, starting at 600 m, present the largest annual averages of days with snow, values averaging from 1.8 day/year in Cambará do Sul (RS) to 2.7 day/year in São Joaquim (SC), the highest averages of snow occurrence. The area of occurrence of the phenomenon is called “Planalto da Neve”, and is subdivided in two sectors: 1) above 900 m and, 2) between 600 m and 900 m. This plateau possesses 95.242 km² and is spread out between RS and SC, comprising 90 municipalities of RS and 101 in SC. The analysis of the interannual variation considering the data from São Joaquim, SC ) indicated that, from the studied series, 1961, 1963, 1971, 1973, 1982 and 1986, did not register snow. The most relevant snowfalls happened in the years of 1965, 1975, 1988 and 1990. The intervals between periods with absence of snow and of more important snowfalls indicates a decadal cycle in the dynamics of the phenomenon. Regardless of the peaks in precipitation registered for 1988 and 1990, there is no trend in the increase of snow precipitation for São Joaquim.

Abstract:
