Barker, Richard. Conclusion: New roles and relationships in a new innovation ecosystem. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198737780.003.0008.

Abstract:
The result of the proposals in this book is a new ecosystem for medical innovation in which many of the participants play new roles. Life science academics will focus to a greater extent on the potential impact of their work. Companies in industry will see more collaborations and partnerships both with academia and with each other. Patient groups and research charities will increasingly be drivers of innovation. Health systems will move from being passive recipients of innovation to being active participants in development. New entrants, mainly from the IT world, will carve out new businesses in patient selection and support and in treatment analysis. To bring all this about, we need ambitious 5- and 10-year goals covering areas from global convergence on evidence needs to a new concordat on patient data access and security.

Abstract:
The widespread use of social media over the past few years has dramatically altered how individuals communicate and engage with one another. Some academics have begun to embrace this development as an opportunity to engage with people outside of academia and to make an impact on the issues that consume our thinking as work–family scholars. Although social media are now pervasive, many scholars are unsure of how to utilize social networks, blogs, and other nonacademic outlets in valuable and meaningful ways. We offer a variety of strategies to help academics craft their own course for harnessing the power of new forms of technology-mediated communication to amplify the impact of their scholarship as well as to enrich their research, learning, and teaching.

Abstract:
The Oxford Handbook of the New Cultural History of Music cultivates a return to the fundamental premises of cultural history in the work of musicologists concerned with cultural history and historians who deal with music. In this volume, noted academics from both of these disciplines illustrate the continuing endeavor of cultural history to grasp the realms of human experience, understanding, and communication as they are manifest or expressed symbolically through various layers of culture and in many forms of art. This book demonstrates how music is becoming a unique mode of access into specific cites of cultural representation, exchange, contestation, and the construction of experience.

Abstract:
Since the 1990s, internationalisation has become key for institutions wishing to secure funding for higher education and research. For the academic community, this strategic shift has had many consequences. Priorities have changed and been influenced by new ways of thinking about universities, and of measuring their impact in relation to each other and to their social goals. Debates are ongoing and hotly contested. In this collection, a mix of renowned academics and newer voices reflect on some of the realities of international research partnerships. They both question and highlight the agency of academics, donors and research institutions in the geopolitics of knowledge and power. The contributors offer fresh insights on institutional transformation, the setting of research agendas, and access to research funding, while highlighting the dilemmas researchers face when their institutions are vulnerable to state and donor influence. Offering a range of perspectives on why academics should collaborate and what for, this book will be useful to anyone interested in how scholars are adapting to the realities of international networking and how research institutions are finding innovative ways to make NorthSouth partnerships and collaborations increasingly fair, sustainable and mutually beneficial.

Fredericks, Sarah E. Religious Studies and Religious Practice. Edited by Robert Frodeman. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198733522.013.31.

Full text
Abstract:
The academic study of religion uses multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary methods because of the nature of religion and the interaction between religious practice and religious studies. Prior to modernity, the study and practice of religion were integrated and separate disciplines were often assumed to study a unified subject. Thus, the terms “multidisciplinary,” “interdisciplinary,” and “transdisciplinary,” which presume strictly separated disciplines do not apply to this period. In modernity, faith-based claims in the guise of objectivity often characterized the academic study of religion, a position increasingly critiqued by academics in the late twentieth century. Yet, new modes of transdisciplinary work demonstrate how scholarship and religious practice may mutually inform each other. Ecumenical and interfaith initiatives share features with multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary research methods and may yield helpful insights for these academic endeavors even though their commitment to an overarching worldview and life in communities set them apart.

Abstract:
The Indian branch moved its headquarters from Bombay to New Delhi in 1972, heralding a new dynamism for OUP in India. With Delhi closely overseeing financial and editorial activities in the Calcutta, Madras, and Bombay offices and supervising showrooms in Hyderabad and Bangalore, the Indian branches concentrated on developing strong local educational and academic lists primarily in English, but also in Urdu, Bengali, and other local languages. OUP India operated in a political climate that discouraged imports and favoured indigenous businesses; the branch responded by having titles printed in India and by reinforcing its Indian identity through the publication of prominent Indian intellectuals and academics. The chapter discusses local production standards and costs, general branch finances, changes in branch management, and the relationship with the Press in Oxford.

Connolly, William E. Then and Now: Participant‐Observation in Political Theory. Edited by John S. Dryzek, Bonnie Honig, and Anne Phillips. Oxford University Press, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199548439.003.0045.

Full text
Abstract:
This article examines changes in the study of participant-observation in the field of political theory. It explains that in the early 1960s, political theory was widely considered as a moribund enterprise. Empiricists were pushing a new science of politics, designed to replace the options of constitutional interpretation, impressionistic theory, and traditionalism. But by the mid-1960s the end of ideology screeched to a halt because of growing outrage about the Vietnam War, worries among college students about the draft, and the emergence of a civil rights movement. The academic study of political theory was revived and a series of studies emerged to challenge the fact-value dichotomy, the difference between science and ideology, and the public roles of academics.

Carter, Laura. Histories of Everyday Life. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198868330.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Histories of Everyday Life is a study of the production and consumption of popular social history in mid-twentieth-century Britain. It traces how non-academic historians, many of them women, developed a new breed of social history after the First World War, identified as the ‘history of everyday life’. The ‘history of everyday life’ was a pedagogical construct based on the perceived educational needs of the new, mass democracy. It was popularized to ordinary people in educational settings, through books, in classrooms and museums, and on BBC radio. In the 1970s this popular social history declined, not because academics invented an alternative ‘new’ social history, but because bottom-up social change rendered the ‘history of everyday life’ untenable in the changing context of mass education. Histories of Everyday Life ultimately uses the subject of history to demonstrate how profoundly the advent of mass education shaped popular culture in Britain after 1918, arguing that the twentieth century was Britain’s educational century.
