Klvana, Ilya. "The solar cycle as a possible modulator of ecosystem functioning on the decadal time scale : new evidence from North American porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) feeding scars and climatic data." Thesis, McGill University, 2002. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=78395.

Abstract:
North American porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) feeding scars on trees were used as an index of past porcupine abundance in the Bas St. Laurent region of eastern Quebec, Canada. The frequency distribution of scars revealed that porcupine populations have fluctuated regularly over the past 130 years in the Bas St. Laurent region, with superimposed periodicities of 11 and 22 years. This porcupine population cycle has closely followed the 11 and 22-year solar activity cycles. An analysis of local temperature and precipitation data revealed a close relationship between fluctuations in annual

Abstract:
This thesis explores the way journalists are using and adapting visualisations in climate change news, in order to investigate the meaning-making potential of an emerging form of digital journalism where methods of information visualisation are used to translate specialist knowledge and often complex, multivariate datasetsinto images that are more easily understood by, and of social value to, the general public. Applying a dual methodological framework of heuristic evaluation and social semiotic analysis, this thesis presents a novel method of exploring both the abstraction and translation of

AMATI, VIVIANA. "New statistics for the parameters estimation of the stochastic actor-oriented model for network change." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10281/19389.

Abstract:
The Stochastic actor-oriented model (SAO) is a statistical model for longitudinal network data. The most often used procedure for the estimation of the parameter of the SAO model is the Method of Moments (MoM), which estimates the parameters using one observed statistic for each estimated parameter. A new set of statistics is defined taking into account the different ways of creating and deleting ties to which a certain effect can contribute. This definition leads to having more than one statistic for a single parameter, i.e. to an over-determined system of equations. Thus, the ordinary MoM ca

Who will be the competitors and how fast are they moving forward in terms of performance improvements? Ultimately, is the current design concept and targeted launch date feasible and competitive? To answer these questions, there is a need to integrate the product benchmarking with the assessment of performance improvement so that analysts can have a risk measure for their R&D target setting practices.
