Wickham, Philip John. "British situation comedy and "the culture of the New Capitalism"." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/8983.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines British television situation comedy over the last fifteen years and analyses the genre as part of a discourse about the nature of modernity. In this period globalisation, technology and the rapid reassessment of formerly established social structures have created new modes of everyday existence that represent significant changes to people’s lives. The thesis argues that contemporary sitcoms address these shifts in social understanding and anxieties about contemporary British life. A wide range of texts are discussed, four in particular detail; Peep Show, Love Soup, Saxondale and Home Time; which explicitly try to form a dialogue with their audience about living in modernity. The thesis largely takes a methodological approach from Television Studies, referencing scholars from the discipline, in particular John Ellis’s concepts of “working through” and employing a significant amount of textual analysis. Chapter two looks at the context of television in this changing world and chapter three analyses how sitcom as a genre has redefined its forms. Chapter four identifies the importance of ‘tone’ in comedy and analyses how modernity demands new modes of address for comedy to meet the expectations of its audience. The study demonstrates how texts balance new approaches with continuities drawn from the existing sitcom tradition. In order to interrogate the nature of social change and its effects, chapter one engages with the work of a number of social theorists. In particular it analyses the recent writings of Richard Sennett and Zygmunt Bauman, who identify contemporary life as “the culture of the new capitalism” and “liquid modernity” respectively. They consider how such change might affect how individuals feel about themselves and their place in society. Throughout, the thesis demonstrates how this work might be applied to the study of sitcom and combines social theory with a detailed analysis of this television form in transformation, arguing that sitcom remains a resonant site for audiences to participate in a productive discourse about how we live today.

Hudson, Ben. "The new comedian : media and technology in stand-up comedy." Thesis, University of Kent, 2015. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/50238/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an investigation of media and technology in stand-up comedy performance and a reflection on Practice as Research undertaken at the University of Kent, UK. Using case studies of experimental stand-up practice and the work of professional comedians, I examine the application of technology in stand-up comedy and analyse the performance dynamics of mediatized stand-up. The framework of this study is formed by three Practice as Research performances, considering issues of time, body and space fundamental to live performance and media theory. Ben Hudson’s Super Media World (2012) used digital projection and an internet connection to play simultaneously to a live studio and online audience, exploring the presence and liveness of screened media. Ben Hudson, Not A Real Person (2013) staged a personal journey of discovery through online social networking profiles and an animated double-act, presenting the comedian at odds with their media double. Finally, Ben Hudson’s Dead Funny (2014) used the hypermedium of videogame streaming as a model for stand-up performance in cyberspace, featuring the videogame DayZ (2013) as its online venue. Analysis of these performances, combined with critical reflection on the work of relevant comedians, is placed within a framework of media and performance discourse. Stand-up is presented as a basic model of theatre performance; a present tense encounter with a requirement for two-way communication between audience and performer. This thesis argues that instead of threatening stand-up as a quintessentially live and co-present art-form, media and technology are shown to create exciting potential in comic performance. In their role as cultural mediators, stand-up comedians self-reflexively acknowledge the process of technological mediation. Responding to the specificity of the performance situation and playing with the temporalities of recorded and broadcast media, stand-ups are able to find humour in the juxtaposition of media elements and subvert audience expectations of presence and liveness.

Boyle, Bridget C. "Bits and bumps: Understanding gender in contemporary physical comedy." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2015. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/83638/1/Bridget_Boyle_Thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates how the gender of a performer affects the way they produce physical comedy in a theatrical context, framed through Kristeva's theory of abjection and Butler's notion of gender as performance. As a thesis by creative work, it produced an original piece of theatre, The Furze Family Variety Hour, which featured a male/ female comic duo, where the female performer enjoyed an equal share of the punch lines. The study generates a new understanding of how the body operates in physical comedy, namely, a system of bodily registers, as well as a new understanding of the female grotesque comic body.

Cinaglia, Valeria. "Aristotle and Menander on the ethics of understanding." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/3182.

Full text
Abstract:
This doctoral thesis explores a subject falling in the interface between ancient Greek philosophy and literature. Specifically, I am concerned with common ground between the New Comedy of Menander and aspects of Aristotle’s philosophy. The thesis does not argue that the resemblance identified between the two writers shows the direct influence of Aristotle on Menander but rather thay they share a common thought-world. The thesis is structured around a series of parallel readings of Menander and Aristotle; key relevant texts are Menander’s "Epitrepontes", "Samia", "Aspis", "Perikeiromene" and "Dyscolos" and Aristotle’s "Posterior Analytics", "Nicomachean and Eudemian Ethics", "De Anima" and "Poetics". My claim is that Menander’s construction of characters and plots and Aristotle’s philosophical analyses express analogous approaches on the subject of the relationship between knowledge and ethics. Central for my argument is the consideration that in Aristotle’s writings on ethics, logic, and psychology, we can identify a specific set of ideas about the interconnection between knowledge-formation and character or emotion, which shows, for instance, how ethical failings typically depend on a combination of cognitive mistakes and emotional lapses. A few years later than the composition of Aristotle’s school-texts, Menander’s comedies, as expressed in the extant texts, present to a wider audience a type of drama which, as I argue, reflects an analogously complex and sophisticated understanding of the interplay between cognitive or rational understanding and character or emotion. More broadly, Aristotle and Menander offer analogous views of the way that perceptions and emotional responses to situations are linked with the presence or absence of ethical and cognitive understanding, or the state of ethical character-development in any given person. Thus, I suggest, the interpersonal crises and the progress towards recognition of the identity of the crucial figures in Menandrian comedies embody a pattern of thinking about perception, knowledge and the role of emotion that shows substantial linkage with Aristotle’s thinking on comparable topics.

Sander, Johanna. "The television series Community and Sitcom : A case study aimed at the genre of contemporary American Sitcom television series." Thesis, Karlstads universitet, Estetisk-filosofiska fakulteten, 2012. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-15067.

Abstract:
This thesis is asking whether the television series Community (2009-) can be defined as a Sitcom, combined with a look at how other genres that generally are considered to be non-comic are incorporated in the series and how those are identifiable as well as whether or not they compromise Community’s possible label as a Sitcom. In seeking to define this show’s place in its own genre I found that whilst Community does not follow the archetypal technical conventions of Sitcom, it still does follow some of its setups, tropes and ideas. It does not suffice as a classical Sitcom, but it does lean on some of the genres conventions and has not yet passed over the line where it would be part of a completely different genre. Instead I state that the series fits the term New Comedy, as devised by Antonio Savorelli, not a genre but a term representing the heightened use of metatextuality on four levels in Comedy. Thus Community suffices as a part of an evolved version of the Sitcom genre.

Abstract:
This thesis offers a critical examination of what I call the “Apatow aesthetic” in order to analyze the social processes of growing up in contemporary neoliberal network society. While doctors, psychologists and social scientists still proffer a model of mid- 20th century human development centered around a chronologically-determined life cycle, the Apatow aesthetic imagines a non-linear reality where traditional life events and social practices don’t always correspond to specific age groups. Specifically, I argue, the Apatow aesthetic subjects the spectator to the pleasures and pains of these life-cycle disruptions, and reveals the unfolding of a new cultural shift which challenges the legitimacy of mid-century heteronormative, adulthood.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the differences between teen romantic comedy films marketed to Generation X teenagers in the 1980s and Generation Y teenagers in the 1990s, focusing on the presentation of gender roles, consumptive behavior, and family. The 1980s films are discussed within the social context of the Reagan era and the conservatism of the New Right. The 1990s films are examined as continuing a conservative sensibility, but they additionally posit consumption as instrumental to achieving an idealized romance. Romantic comedy is traditionally a conservative genre, but these films illustrate female liberation through consumption. The source of difference between the cycles of teen romantic comedy is attributed to the media's attempt to position Generation Y teenagers as ideal consumers.

Abstract:
Through exploring the use of documentary style in a selection of contemporary American comedy series, this thesis closes in on the question whether texts that stylistically differ from traditional sitcom can still be regarded as part of the sitcom genre. The contemporary American TV series that are being analyzed are The Office, Arrested Development, Modern Family, Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Michael J. Fox Show. As the series’ place within sitcom becomes apparent, the analysis ultimately leads to a critical investigation of the term “comedy verite.” Questioning the concepts applicability for the American series and their development leads to the investigation of new definitions. This analysis of contemporary televisual styles reveals a myriad of deeper issues and elucidates how stylistic developments point towards broader developments of the TV medium – towards a medium more and more defined by, or even drenched in, “reality.”

A 26-minute docu-comedy product of my studies in film and television production, The Traveling Jewish, captures improvised moments of social interaction through documentary filming style. Through filming, editing, animation and music, it becomes an entertaining half-hour of television and social commentary. It is with each cut, layer, added graphics, omitted sound or musical accompaniment, that the viewer is guided into the cultural understanding and comedic inclination of the creator of such a piece. In doing so, I believe we are opening up a new genre of Television, the Docu-Comedy, which aims to explore comedy in site-specific landscapes, through primarily improvised scenes, using the discretion of the director to do otherwise when narrative comprehension is at risk. In this way humor exists in a way not often exploited on television. As humor serves as a forum to bring to the attention of society activities, beliefs, morals, etc., at the same time challenging their validity or even ethical realities, its mere existence is often seen as a sign of the health of a society. This paper looks at all the technical and theoretical elements of such a proposal.

Abstract:
My thesis is intended to analyse the interactions between Greek and Roman Comedy and Cynicism. My study, that considers all the complex issues related to the sources of Cynicism, is developed using a double perspective. On the one hand, I examine the formal debts that Cynical tradition has contracted towards Comedy and the different functions of the geloion in the communicative forms used by Cynics. In this perspective, I also analyse the passages where the ancient sources put into relation Cynics with Comedy or with a specific comedian and the passages in which the attribution fluctuates between comedians and Cynics. On the other hand, I study the representation of Cynics in Comedy. Therefore, the significant part of my research is committed to the collection and to the comments of the comic verses where there is a reference to Cynics or where scholars have suspected an allusion to them. In this analyse, I devote a special attention to the comparison between the representation of Cynics in Comedy and these in other sources. From this analysis we can infer that there are not many differences about elements used to the representation, but rather a risemantisation and a different connotation of same elements.

Abstract:
Few genres have proven to be as versatile and as expressive of social and political change as comedy, and within this privileged category, the screwball undoubtedly occupies a prominent place. Conventionally limited in the decade between the '30s and the 40's but resulting incredibly influential; dwelling with the prohibition of mentioning sex when discussing romance; swinging between the crisis of the Great Depression and the optimism of the New Deal era; this sub-genre – just like the name suggests, referring to one of baseball's most difficult and spectacular pitches – is unpredictable, creative and incredibly fun. But most of all, with its authors and interprets, it has satirized, challenged and provoked our idea of love, using fast-paced humorous dialogues which above all reach the highest level of the art of allusion: as efficiently summarized in Andrew Sarris's definition, “sex comedies without the sex”. This paper will examine the social, cultural and historical background of the Screwball comedy genre through three examples of its most critically successful films -It Happened One Night (1934), The Philadelphia Story (1940) and Bringing Up Baby (1938). Moreover, this study will also analyze screwball comedy's humor and defining aesthetic features: social satire; battle of the sexes; expression of sexual tension through verbal fight; frenetic pace; coexistence of elements of sophisticated comedy, slapstick and farce; encounter and clash between social classes; initially antagonistic protagonists who fall in love; bizarre and paradoxical events; unpredictability; presence of disguise and masquerade. Furthermore, it will also critique the concept of the male gaze in Capra, Hawks and Cukor’s female characters while discussing the ending of classic screwball comedy and its legacy in modern cinema.

Abstract:
This work consists in the introductory study and translation of the comedy Dyskolos, of Menander, Greek author of the fourth century BC. The first part of the study includes the presentation of comedy concerning its context and its dramatic structure. The second part is devoted to the analysis of the characters - as a comedy that emphasizes the characters, I consider it important. This section is divided into nine parts, each one devoted to one character, except for the first section entitled The Divine, which presents an analysis of the god Pan and the Nymphs, and the fifth section, entitled Female characters, which conveys the analysis of the girl, the daughter of Knemon of Simike, and of Sostratos mother. The translation, the second one developed in Brazil the first is by Mario da Gama Kury aims to disseminate the work of the Greek author to the Brazilian public. With this purpose, the text was converted to Portuguese on prose, trying to keep its rhythm and language. Besides that, the line of the verse was kept to make it easier the consultation with the original.

Abstract:
This thesis discusses the relationship between mockumentaries and the music industry. Because this subject has yet to be studied in depth, the original contribution to knowledge is to further examine this relationship. To do so, a literature review documenting what has thus far been written about mockumentaries is provided. This audiovisual strategy is also contextualized within contemporary practices. In the next section, the music industry is discussed in broad terms. Firstly, the relationship between cinema and music is addressed. Then, music is depicted as a cultural phenomenon, with recent issues also being brought to light. In the last chapter, four music-related mockumentaries are analysed. Then, extensive conclusions are drawn.

Powell, Kim Elizabeth. "Going with the flow: The everyday, everywhere news consumption and political participation of young Australian adults." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/16922.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates young Australian adults‘ news consumption and how it informs their political participation. Not long ago, international research indicated that Generation Y/Millennials may be the first generation to abandon the news, and a society without news consumers would be bad for democracy. A strong democratic culture requires citizens to participate in the political process, and this mostly involves being reasonably informed through the news media. And so, with this concern about young adults‘ declining news consumption came the concurrent worry about their political participation. At the same time as these declines were being noted, news comedy (also known as late-night comedy) and social media were emerging as important sources of news for young adults. Very little of the research into news comedy has been conducted in Australia, and so this study aims to fill this gap. The study uses Stuart Allan‘s (2004) news culture framework and Brian Loader, Ariadne Vromen, and Michael Xenos (2014) networked young citizen framework to conceptualise news consumption and political participation as everyday, everywhere activities that strengthen Australia‘s civic life. The data comes from 288 Australians aged 18-25 years, who completed an online survey that was circulated on Twitter – the most frequently-used social media platform for news. The vast majority are very high news consumers who get their news throughout the day on social media as they move across places and spaces, devices and platforms. They report that social media has increased their consumption of political news, and that they learn about current affairs and politics from news comedy. Almost all of the respondents have engaged in a range of participatory behaviours as a result of something they saw in the news. Overall, this study shows that young Australian adults have not abandoned the news, and that with social media and mobile technologies, their news consumption and political participation are everyday, everywhere, and very ordinary parts of their lives. However, despite their high levels of news consumption most of the respondents had negative things to say about the news media, particularly the perceived irrelevance to their lives and the way the media portrays their age group.

Abstract:
There exist less than thirty known comedias treating Spain's engagement with the New World. With access to the entire corpus, I analyse the genesis of the representative stereotype of the Indian, and trace its transposition from festival pageantry and allegorical iconography to the stage of the comedia. I relate scenes from the plays to works of triumphalist sculpture and the semiology of modem staged spectacle, and compare the sexual metaphor of the iconography of the First Encounter, with a similar tableau from the corpus. I then analyse the emblematic representation of female Indians in the corpus, and their role in securing the inscription of Spanish male "hegemony" and "closure". There follows a discussion of the role of the Devil in the deception of the Indians. I consider several plays in the light of research on the origins of ethnology, and discuss the extent to which the depiction of the Indians on stage can be ascribed to their idolatry and its rituals. I then analyse the plays' demonisation of native orality. The "performance" of the politico-religious Requerimiento, both in history and on the stage, is measured in literary terms against the "fetishisation" of Western writing in the Conquest, followed by an assessment of the interrogation of these issues by Lope de Vega according to the notion of his manipulation of rhetorical "politeness". Finally, I contrast the function of scenes of horror and violence perpetrated by Indians, with those carried out by Spaniards. I return to the topic of staged spectacle and analyse the use of such scenes in "serious" and then "burlesque" mode,as defined according to theories of genre within the comedia. I link this to "carnival humour", and apply this to the comic treatment of topics of cannibalism and mutilation involving the Indians, and ask how this informs upon their representation in the corpus as a whole.

Abstract:
This study, entitled “dramaturgy and morals”, looks at the dramatization of moral values in the comedies of Menander and Plautus. I employ an approach that identifies which values are evoked and looks at how they are conveyed and structured in relation to one another. The aim is to analyse how they are treated and the place that is accorded to them. Are they subjected to reflection, affirmed, or critiqued? Thus what is at stake is less about finding the “morals” in the plays or their supposed moral message, but rather delineating the architectonics of values in these comedies. This study will focus more specifically on axiology, that is to say the form that moral evaluation takes in the comedies of Menander and Plautus. According to which criteria is this evaluation carried out? What is at stake in this evaluation? The concept of value, as it appears in the comedies of Menander and Plautus, entails essentially three domains: the material, the symbolic, and the ethical. The issue at hand is understanding how they are conceived of and related to one another in the comedies of Menander and Plautus. Such a perspective intersects with the question of the relationship between personal interest and the interests of others, a key concern in Ancient philosophy which seeks to discover to what extent an ethical agent is obliged to take into consideration others in order to achieve happiness. The first section is concerned with the concepts of moral values and trade. It looks at two types of trade: commercial trade, which outlines the primacy of utilitarian morals, and communal trade, which is based on co-operative values. The second section deals with the idea of contravention. It examines the procedures used to judge a particular action. The third section looks at comedy as ethical experimentation

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart's ascendance into the mainstream consciousness has reached a point where many not only consider it to be a source of news, but also Stewart to be one of the most respected and important journalists in the country. This study investigated The Daily Show’s impact on the general public using the theoretical framework of agenda-setting. After grounding the study in existing scholarly research, data, content and textual analyses were performed on 12 Daily Show episodes, as well as data analysis on the corresponding network news broadcasts. It was then concluded that The Daily Show has no significant impact on what people think about no matter what variables were analyzed. Thus, Stewart likely has been right all along in his claim that he and his team are not journalists – rather, they are merely producing a comedy show that happens to involve news and parodies news broadcasts

Abstract:
When, in 343 B.C., the Romans paid tribute to wisdom, they built a statue of Pythagoras. Why was not Socrates chosen instead ? Pliny the Elder wonders. This interrogation reflects the progressive integration of the figure of the Athenian philosopher in Rome, from the second century B.C. until the work of Seneca which internalises the Socratic teaching model. At first, the exhaustive corpus of the occurrences of Socrates is gathered in a diachronic perspective. The passages are contextualized in the entire work, its genre and the purposes of every author. The Greek sources are, when possible, identified : the presence of Socrates serves then as a marker for the reading of the texts of Plato, Xenophon, but also other Socratics like Aeschines.Secondly, the texts are studied according to chronological and thematic groupings : a double reception of Socrates is then defined, between praise and contempt, which articulates around his greatness, his founding role for the Hellenistic philosophic schools, his courageous death and, on the contrary, his denunciation of rhetoric or the fact that Socratics’ theories are useless to fight against passions. The philosophic lifestyle embodied by Socrates sometimes contrasts with the one defined by the mos maiorum, or by the elegiac poets. Various interpretations of Socrates come to light, as an ancestor of Cynicism and Stoicism, as a sceptic or a transcendentalist, paving the way for a cultural transfer of the Greek philosophical works but also of their exegeses. Whether it be in an historiographic, philosophic or literary perspective, Socrates gradually becomes an exemplum, a model of life

Ph.D.
This dissertation examines the body of literature that formed around anomalous light apparitions (comets, new stars, the aurora borealis, and rainbows) as it explores questions about the representation and response to celestial and meteorological phenomena during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in colonial America. I further consider the ways that these texts’ meanings are informed by rational scientific thought and by other non-scientific or non-rational, emotive, or aesthetic modes of thinking. I consider how these phenomena elicit a set of empirical yet emotionally-charged observational practices that complicate how we understand the roles of the rational and the non-rational in the scientific literature of this period. I argue that non-rational passionate investments are evident within or as part of the period’s rational scientific literature; they act as the impetus for scientific inquiry therefore forming an integral part of the scientific endeavor. This dissertation further explores how the practice of writing about these phenomena generates and facilitates the formation of communities of amateur scientific observers in colonial America. I further investigate how practices of data collection contribute to knowledge about the regular and irregular behaviors of celestial bodies, and how this knowledge impacts everyday practices essential for survival such as farming and travelling. What science writing from this period demonstrates is the ability for multiple ways of thinking to be in play simultaneously; these texts show how several worldviews (i.e. science, Puritanism, popular religion) are intrinsic to each other. Because of their liminality, these texts function outside of traditional categories such science, religion, and natural philosophy. Furthermore, they destabilize traditional conceptions of genre with their blend of rational and non-rational modes of thought and their incorporation of fact and fiction. While I treat these literary texts within their historical contexts, I am also interested in the ways in which these texts reach modern audiences, particularly in academia at a time when the humanities and sciences are positioned against one another.

Abstract:
The core concern of my thesis is with shifting the focus from the description on how innovation is done (predominantly STS accounts of innovation in-the-making) to what designers do with conceptions of innovation. The thesis is based on ethnographic fieldwork within a group of interaction designers of Milan. Despite the different conceptions and traditions of innovation that these designers bring in – the artistic and technological ones – I observed that a design-centered conception of innovation is reproduced, as well as the idea that plans and intentions precede things. However, another key idea of my fieldwork is the importance designers give to imagining things as they might be, rather than focusing on how things are. This is where different models of action, planned and open ones coexist in creative ways: it is these processes that the ethnography details.

Abstract:
Research into political satire programs show that they can be informative in the same way traditional news inform citizens and that the audience trust the information told by satirists. The political satire program Last Week Tonight with John Oliver has inspired the phenomenon ‘the John Oliver Effect’ due to comedian John Oliver’s ability to influence the world of politics and beyond with his in-depth investigations in serious subjects. In the author’s previous research Last Week Tonight has been portrayed by the media as being a credible source despite being the work of a comedian. This study therefore aimed to research what it is that makes Oliver and Last Week Tonight a credible source and whether some aspects of the reporting can be seen as communication campaign. With the theory of source credibility as part of its core, this study used the method of multimodality to ascertain that the main aspect that spoke to Oliver’s credibility was his perceived trustworthiness rather that his expertise or attractiveness. Using the same method but with the theory of communication campaign as part of its core, the study also ascertained that the program in general possessed some characteristics of a communication campaign but to be completely successful an episode had to possess all characteristics of a communication campaign. Merging this with previous research would indicate that subjectivity – Oliver’s authenticity and honest opinions and feelings – play an important part in his perceived credibility.

Abstract:

Compounds of the core pyrimidine have great potential and pharmacological importance to human health and the environment and therefore exhibit different biological properties as anti-inflammatory, antitumor, bioherbicide among others. This work intent to analyze the genotoxic effects of the compounds 4-Amino-2-(phenyl)-6-(m-nitrophenyl)-5-carbonitrile-pyrimidine (5a) 4-Amino-2-(phenyl)-6-(p-nitrophenyl)-5-carbonitrile-pyrimidine (5b) and 4-Amino-2-(phenyl)-6-(p-anisyl)-5-carbonitrile-pyrimidine (5c) obtained by chemical synthesis using the SMART (Somatic Mutation and Recombination Test) and Comet Assay in Drosophila melanogaster. For SMART, D. melanogaster larvae were exposed to concentrations of 0.04, 0.09, 0.19, 0.39, 0.78, 1.56 and 3.12 mg/mL of the compounds 5a and 5b, and a negative control group treated only with the solvent. A survival curve was established in accordance with the birth of adults in order to check the cytotoxicity of the compounds. The spots and the mutants were analyzed by light microscopy and the results of the groups treated were compared to the negative control group. During the methodological process of the Comet Assay, larvae of D. melanogaster Oregon-R strain were exposed for 24 hours to the compounds 5a, 5b and 5c, at the concentrations 0.39, 0.78, 1.56 and 3.12 mg/mL, and to the solvent (the negative control group). To microscopic analysis of possible genetic damage caused by the compounds, were observed cells from the hemolymph (hemocytes) of larvae. The results indicated that in both tests there were no significant difference between the treated groups and the negative control. It leads us to conclude that the tested compounds showed neither toxic effect, nor mutagenic activity in D. melanogaster over the experimental conditions in D. melanogaster model.

Abstract:
Titanus is the longest-living production company in the Italian cinematic panorama. Its more interesting phase dates back to the early 1950s, when Goffredo Lombardo replaced his father Gustavo at the helm of the company. Then Titanus, which was the biggest Italian studio both in terms of industrial facilities and in regard to the width of its film distribution circuit, managed to construct a solid company identity especially through genre films such as melodramas and film comedies, until in 1964 a financial crisis forced it to shut down its productive branch. The aim of my thesis is to outline the company’s profile, by the means of the modes of production theories and of the film genre theories which emerged in the United States in the late 1990s. This theoretical framework was modeled after the Hollywood context, yet I maintain it is suitable also to describe a great Italian company such as Titanus, which in turn was in many ways looking to emulate the American studios model. Moreover, in order to perform my research, I examined the Fondo Titanus preserved in the film archive Cineteca del Comune di Bologna, and also the original production plans of some of the Titanus movies, which are preserved in the Archivio Centrale dello Stato in Rome. After having examined the company profile and its means of production in the first part of the thesis, in the second and in the third one – devoted respectively to the Titanus melodrama and film comedy – I closely analyzed about thirty out of the 120 films produced by Titanus, focusing mostly on the use of what Tom Gunning calls the “cinematic attractions” and the movies pathemic devices, which I examined referring to the greimasian semiotics of passions. I was therefore able to outline the Titanus productive strategies, and also to study how it modeled its company identity through its staple genres.

Abstract:
Network science has significantly advanced in the last decade, providing insights into the underlying structure and dynamics of complex networks. Critical infrastructures such as telecommunication networks play a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth functioning of modern day living. These networks have to constantly deal with failures of their components. In multiple failure scenarios, where traditional protection and restoration schemes are not suitable because of the quantity of resources that would be required, the concept of robustness is used in order to quantify just how good a network is under such a large-scale failure scenario. The aim of this thesis is to, firstly, investigate the current challenges that might lead to multiple failure scenarios of present day networks and, secondly, to propose novel metrics able to quantify the network robustness.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, the pattern and direction of international trade flows will be analysed by taking into consideration different levels of development across countries in the world. A better understanding of the factors explaining trade will help authorities to define specific economic and industrial policies at macro and micro levels in order to promote trade and subsequently economic development and growth in countries at different stages of development.
The dissertation analyses in greater detail the role of some of the variables recently considered as determinants of international trade flows. Technological innovation, geographical factors, cultural similarities and trade costs are the explanatory factors that will be investigated in depth.
First, aggregated trade flows are modelled as a function of incomes, distance, technological innovation, geography and cultural similarities. Second, a disaggregated analysis is performed to investigate the effect of tariffs and transport costs on bilateral trade flows.
Determinants of international trade flows may differ across both countries and sectors. Country and sector heterogeneity issues will therefore be considered when analysing international trade patterns.
One of the main devices used to analyse the determinants of international trade flows is the gravity model of trade. Recently, some authors have referred to this model as the "workhorse" of empirical trade. In this dissertation, the gravity model is the main modelling framework used.

Abstract:
Voluntary movements are achieved by the contraction of skeletal muscles controlled by the Central and Peripheral Nervous system. The contraction is initiated by the release of a neurotransmitter that promotes a reaction in the walls of the muscular fiber, producing a biopotential known as Motor Unit Action Potential (MUAP) that travels from the neuromuscular junction to the tendons. The surface electromyographic signal records the continuous activation of such potentials over the surface of the skin and constitutes a valuable tool for the diagnosis, monitoring and clinical research of muscular disorders as well as to infer motion intention not only regarding the direction of the movement but also its power. In the study of diseases of the neuromuscular system it is necessary to analyze the level of activity, the capacity of production of strength, the load-sharing between muscles and the probably predisposition to muscular fatigue, all of them associated with physiological factors determining the resultant muscular contraction. Moreover, the use of electrode arrays facilitate the investigation of the peripheral properties of the active Motor Units, the anatomical characteristics of the muscle and the spatial changes induced in their activation of as product of type of movement or power of the contraction. The main objective of this thesis was the design and implementation of experimental protocols, and algorithms to extract information from multichannel sEMG signals in 1 and 2 dimensions of the space. Such information was interpreted and related to pathological events associated to two upper-limb conditions: Lateral Epicondylitis and Repetitive Strain Injury. It was also used to identify the direction of movement and contraction strength which could be useful in applications concerning the use of biofeedback from EMG like in robotic- aided therapies and computer-based rehabilitation training. In summary, the most relevant contributions are:§The definition of experimental protocols intended to find optimal regions for the recording of sEMG signals. §The definition of indices associated to the co- activation of different muscles. §The detection of low-quality signals in multichannel sEMG recordings.§ The selection of the most relevant EMG channels for the analysis§The extraction of a set of features that led to high classification accuracy in the identification of tasks. The experimental protocols and the proposed indices allowed establishing that imbalances between extrinsic muscles of the forearm could play a key role in the pathophysiology of lateral epicondylalgia. Results were consistent in different types of motor task and may define an assessment framework for the monitoring and evaluation of patients during rehabilitation programs. On the other hand, it was found that features associated with the spatial distribution of the MUAPs improve the accuracy of the identification of motion intention. What is more, features extracted from high density EMG recordings are more robust not only because it implies contact redundancy but also because it allows the tracking of (task changing) skin surface areas where EMG amplitude is maximal and a better estimation of muscle activity by the proper selection of the most significant channels.

Abstract:
The increasing need for range-resolved aerosol and water-vapour atmospheric observation networks worldwide has given rise to multi-spectral LIDARs (Light Detection and Ranging, a synonym of laser radar) as advanced remote sensing sensors. This Ph.D. presents the design, integration and analysis of the new 6-channel multispectral elastic/Raman LIDAR for aerosol and water-vapour content monitoring developed at the Remote Sensing Lab. (RSLAB) of the Universitat Polit ecnica de Catalunya (UPC). It is well known that the combination of at least three elastic and two Raman nitrogen channels are su cient to enable retrieval of the optical and microphysical properties of aerosols with a key impact on climate change variables. The UPC lidar is part of the EARLINET (European Aerosol Research Lidar Network) -GALION (Global Atmospheric Watch Atmospheric Lidar Observation Network), a ground-based continental network including more than 28 stations. Currently, only 8 of the 28 EARLINET stations are of such advanced type. This Ph.D. speci cally focuses on: (1) Concept link-budget instrument design and overlap factor assessment. The former includes opto-atmospheric parameter modelling and assessment of backscattered power and SNR levels, and maximum system range for the di erent reception channels (3 elastic, and 2 aerosol and 1 water-vapour Raman channels, ultraviolet to near-infrared bands). The latter studies the laser-telescope crossover function (or overlap function) by means of a novel raytracing Gaussian model. The problem of overlap function computation and its near-range sensitivity for medium size aperture (f=10, f=11) bi-axial tropospheric lidar systems using both detector and ber-optics coupling alternatives at the telescope focal-plane is analysed using this new ray-tracing approach, which provides a much simpler solution than analyticalbased methods. Sensitivity to laser divergence, eld-lens and detector/ ber positions, and ber's numerical aperture is considered. (2) Design and opto-mechanical implementation of the 6-channel polychromator (i.e., the spectrally selective unit in reception). Design trade-o s concerning light collimation, end-to-end transmissivity, net channel responsivity, and homogeneous spatial light distribution onto the detectors' active area discussed. (3) System integration and validation. This third part is two fold: On one hand, fi rst-order backscatter-coe cient error bounds (a level-1 data product) for the two-component elastic lidar inversion algorithm are estimated for both random (observation noise) and systematic error sources (user's uncertainty in the backscatter-coe cient calibration, and user's uncertainty in the aerosol extinction-to-backscatter lidar ratio). On the other hand, the multispectral lidar so far integrated is described at both hardware and control software level. Statistical validation results for the new UPC lidar (today in routine operation) in the framework of SPALI-2010 intercomparison campaign are presented as part of EARLINET quality assurance / optimisation of instruments' program. The methodology developed in the rst part of this Ph.D. has successfully been applied to the speci cation case study of the IFAE/UAB lidar system, which will be installed and operated at the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observatory. Finally, specs for automated unmanned unattended lidar operation with service times close to 365/24 are presented at the end of this Ph.D. in response to the increasing demand for larger observation times and availability periods of lidar stations.

Abstract:
Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease after 1 year old until the end of adolescence, except those related to accidents and violence. Acute Lymphoid Leukemia (ALL) affects lymphoid cells and worsens quickly. They are the most frequent tumors in childhood and account for a third of all malignancies in this age group. On average, the cure rate exceeds 70%, however, despite the progress of recent decades, rates of children with disease recurrence remains significant. Endogenous DNA damage occurs at a very high frequency, in addition to the damage caused by anti-tumor therapies. Change in the repair of DNA damage can induce resistance mechanisms to chemotherapy, resulting in increased repair of DNA lesions. Nucleotide Excision Repair (NER) pathway is the more versatile and flexible DNA repair in cells. Its components are being studied as prognostic biomarkers and targeted therapies. However, there are some reports of DNA damage in pediatric Acute Lymphoid Leukemia (ALL). In this study, we conducted an observational follow-up study in pediatric patients to assess DNA damage by alkaline comet assay and gene expression of NER pathway during induction chemotherapy. Bone marrow (BM) samples at diagnosis, 15th (D15) and 30th (D30) of treatment were collected from 28 patients with ALL. There was no increase in damage index. However, there was a reduction of cells with low damage in comparison to the D35 diagnosis. This result was confirmed in patients with positive minimal residual disease. The NER pathway remained constant, however, in one patient, a significant decrease of gene expression was observed perhaps due to the silencing or down-regulation of repair pathways. Damage levels and DNA repair can influence the clinical result and may be involved in drug resistance and enhance the risk of recurrence. This is the first study to assess DNA damage in BM samples of pediatric patients with ALL. Despite the small number of patients allocated to the study, from the findings we conclude that repair complex deserves to be investigated in the short and long term. Monitoring patient’s outcomes will help to access the implication of our findings in cure and relapse rates.

This research has its methodological-theoretical basis in dialectical materialism and uses the Triangulation as investigational strategy. The main goal is to understand the dynamics in the relation between the Solidary Economy project and the Brazilian State during neo-developmental governments by an impact evaluation of the Food Acquisition Program (Programa de Aquisição de Alimentos – PAA) on associative family farming territories, considering the instrumentalization of their places and enterprises by the informational technical-scientific environment. For such, we analyze the Brazilian neo-developmental socio-economic and political scenario in the period from 2003 to 2016. Initially, there are the presidential terms of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (2003-2010), whose purposes were, among others, maintain the economic stabilization policy and face the social inequalities, being the non-salary occupation in solidary economy enterprises one of the strategies. Following, there are the presidential terms of Dilma Vana Rousseff (2011-2016) that, although with meaningful adjustments, carry on with this policy. In the degree that neo-developmental efforts influence the modeling of a policy for family farming through the PAA, it is possible to see, however, that when it comes to the execution old practices and instruments are not disentangled, supporting the (re)production of regional inequalities, especially because of the instrumentalization of their enterprises by the informational technical-scientific environment. This thesis is supported by the following expressions and directions: (i) although acknowledging the altruism in the principles and practices of solidary organizations, Solidary Economy has served the capitalism as an absorption space for the reserve army and, therefore, as a way of social control, and, being one of its expressions, the associative family farming reveals its contradictions; (ii) the performance of this social-developmental policy has “chicken flight autonomy”, that is, with meaningful oscillations and unsustainability, ends quickly, because in family farming, and predominantly, in the PAA, although resources are substantial in the beginning, they decrease in the end; (iii) the intersectoral and incremental models are not efficient in the PAA operation; (iv) in state and municipal partnerships, the Federal Government always acknowledges low adherence from managers; (v) financial resources tend to be better applied where informational technical-scientific knowledge is already developed; (vi) PAA resources are concentrated in richer and more articulated states; (vii) members of groupings from economically depressed regions have lower income and inferior quality of life conditions; (viii) when implementing and operating the PAA, entrepreneurs face difficult bureaucratic demands, unable to have a continuing and sufficient production; (ix) the improvement in farmers’ quality of life is the result of a set of public policies and not of PAA alone; (x) there are cooperatives well integrated in the market and others dependent on the program; (xi) the program Ater Mais Gestão (support-program of PAA and PNAE (Programa Nacional de Alimentação Escolar) [National School Food Program]) is not efficient and effective, once the investments are significant and the results are specific. Thus, it is possible to conclude that the social-developmental policy for social family farming through the PAA seems to be (from a Brechtian perspective) the “new meat eaten with old cutlery”, or, in other words, a new policy operated by old practices.
