Full text
Abstract:
This volume collects, for the first time, essential interviews and aesthetic writings from throughout James Tenney's five-decade artistic career. The eminent American-Canadian composer James Tenney (1934–2006) made groundbreaking contributions to sampling culture, digital sound synthesis, algorithmic composition, minimalism, spectral music, music in non-standard tuning systems, contemporary theories of form and harmony, and the consolidation of an American experimental-music tradition. This book documents both his own work and his involvements with influential figures in mid-century American m

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the collaborative, cyclical relationship between composition and instrument development as it follows the journey from technically extreme compositions, via the design and manufacture of the Howarth-Redgate oboe, to composers’ responses to this new instrument. The chapter takes as its starting point the extreme technical demands that result from the development of extended techniques—for example, the problems with the standard instrument’s keywork that stem from such compositional approaches. Then, through reference to Roger Redgate’s Ausgangspunkte and other works that

Abstract:
Gustav Mahler’s Seventh Symphony stands out as one of the most provocative symphonic statements of the early twentieth century. This book offers a new interpretation of the Seventh based on a detailed study of Mahler’s compositional materials, combined with a close reading of the finished work. The Seventh has often been heard as “existing in the shadow” of the Sixth Symphony or as “too reminiscent” of Richard Wagner’s opera Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. Focusing on sketches previously considered as “discarded,” this study reveals unexpected connections between the Seventh and both the Sixth

Abstract Symphonic music of the early twentieth century reflects the complex, cosmopolitan world it inhabited. In a time of waning empire, rising nationalism, and heightened sexual politics, composers in Germany, Britain, and the United States drew upon the compositional resources of tradition to create intensely personal symphonic spectacles. The hybrid symphonic works that flourished in this period mixed musical forms and genres freely, adapting compositional procedures for their rhetorical potential. Symphonic Spectacles investigates large-scale formal mixture in six case studies that juxta

From a corpus of Greek epics known in antiquity as the “Epic Cycle,” six poems dealt with the same Trojan War mythology as the Homeric poems. Though they are now lost, these poems were much read and much discussed in ancient times, not only for their content but for their mysterious relationship with the more famous works attributed to Homer. This study shows that these lost poems belonged, compositionally, to essentially the same tradition as the Homeric poems. It demonstrates that various compositional devices well-known from the Homeric epics were also fundamental to the narrative construct

Abstract The State of Afterness traces the cultural histories of contemporary music in Israel since the 1980s. Assembling the networks of composers trained in the post-ideological climate of the 1970s and 1980s and the compositional approaches that recorded the attenuation of territorial nationalism, afterness emerges as the state of being unconditioned by territorialism while opting for previously unavailable temporalities and ethnographies. The audience is invited to move the speakers around the room in order to shape their experience of the piece itself. Sometimes the slightest touch of a speaker will cause the music to take on a completely new direction, leading to the emergence of new sonic forms. At other points, the speakers react less obviously and audiences are encouraged to listen instead. Scholars have developed a textual history for the Tell Fakhariyah inscription, reconstructing a complex compositional process based upon division of this inscription into parts stemming from a West Semitic hand and parts with East Semitic origin. By exploring the translation technique that governed the production of this inscription, this chapter demonstrates that it stems from a single hand who could mediate between traditions of East and West. Temporal, cultural, and linguistic factors are considered in distinguishing between improvisatory and compositional paradigms. The conclusion argues that to renew the field of Pentateuchal criticism—indeed, the historical-critical paradigm in biblical studies more broadly—historical-critical scholars will need to adopt three new priorities in their work. The first is an epistemological shift toward modesty in our goals and toward accepting contingency in our results. The second is a far greater understanding of the rhetorical and compositional practices of the ancient Near East as we adduce notions of what constitutes a fissure in a text and how the biblical texts grew over time. Finally, scholars will need to ground
