Abstract:
The dissertation examines Liszt's experimentation with harmonic, formal, and programmatic procedures in the piano works of his Weimar period (1848--1861). Liszt's music has often been criticized as "new wine in old bottles." His radical development of keyboard technique and harmonic vocabulary appears contained within, and constrained by, traditional forms. Here, however, it is argued that Liszt's "form" and "content" go hand in hand. A change in one compositional element (e.g., harmonic vocabulary) leads to changes in other elements (e.g., formal and tonal design), so that a kind of compositi

Almost all philosophers interested in parthood and composition think that a composite object is a further thing, numerically distinct from the objects that compose it. Call this the orthodox view. I argue that the orthodox view is false, and that a composite object is identical to the objects that compose it (collectively). This view is known as composition as identity. I argue that, despite its unpopularity, there are many reasons to favour composition as identity over the orthodox view. First, defenders of the orthodox view have not offered complete theories of composition. For instance, t

A matt white ceramic tile was selected as a reflectance standard to be used with the CAPP, after testing a variety of

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to describe the criteria that students reported using when selecting writing samples for an assessment portfolio. Specifically, the study involved content analysis of student responses to five prompts which asked the students to give selection criteria for writing samples in language arts portfolios prepared for assessment. The population consisted of twelve eighth grade students in three urban middle schools. The students were in classes that were participating in the New Standards Portfolio Assessment Field Trial. In addition to the responses to prompts, studen

Therefore, the author adopted it as the research theme of this thesis study. Improvement of this music instrument was driven by social and cultural needs of each era. Better understanding of its characteristics was achieved through investigation of the instrument evolution, technique development and the scale system. Such understandings may be applied to the composition of Zheng music. Subsequently, the author ana

abstract: In the fast-paced, technology-driven society of today, new demands are placed on artists to re-think how music is presented and communicated to the world. Access to the internet, development of sound manipulation software, and broader means of use and distribution through the digital music industry have drastically shifted the way the twenty-first century artist creates and performs music. One of the most striking changes that occurred is the increased use of visual material as a vehicle to enhance and contribute to the depth and intrigue of live performances and recordings. This p

Abstract:
This study investigated the discrimination between sources of the semi-precious mineral, nephrite, by a targeted microanalytical determination of the elemental composition, including the trace elements. Nephrite specimens were collected from two significant nephrite sources in New Zealand, namely the Westland and Wakatipu fields, and combined with donated specimens from the Southland field to complete a representative collection of New Zealand nephrite. A small number of nephrite specimens were donated from the South Westland nephrite field and from foreign sources. Representative fragments

Bravo, Fabio. "New polymeric compositions for nonflammable and thermally stable foams." Thesis, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/1911/13697.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a great need to develop new polymer foam systems that combine the advantages of polyurethane foams (low cost, ease of processing, desirable physical properties) with nonflammability and thermal stability which polyurethanes lack. In this project we address this need by synthesizing novel polymer networks with a substantial content of nonflammable elements. Specifically most of the pendant hydrogens have been eliminated (or replaced with fluorine), and a substantial fraction of the carbon atoms are replaced with oxygen, phosphorus, and nitrogen. Other elements such as Ca, Mg, Al, Sb, V
