Abstract:
In [Complements to Li's criterion for the Riemann hypothesis, J. Number Theory77 (1999) 274–287] Bombieri and Lagarias observed the remarkable identity [1 - (1 - 1/s)n] + [1 - (1 - 1/(1 - s))n] = [1 - (1 - 1/s)n]⋅[1 - (1 - 1/(1 - s))n], and pointed out that the positivity in Li's criterion [The positivity of a sequence of numbers and the Riemann hypothesis, J. Number Theory65 (1997) 325–333] has the same meaning as in Weil's criterion [Sur les "formules explicites" de la théorie des nombres premiers, in Oeuvres Scientifiques, Collected Paper, Vol. II (Springer-Verlag, New York, 1979), pp. 48–61]. Let λn = ∑ρ[1 - (1 - 1/ρ)n] for n = 1, 2, …, where ρ runs over the complex zeros of the Riemann zeta function ζ(s). In this note, a certain truncation of λn is expressed as Weil's explicit formula [Sur les "formules explicites" de la théorie des nombres premiers, in Oeuvres Scientifiques, Collected Paper, Vol. II (Springer-Verlag, New York, 1979), pp. 48–61] for each positive integer n. By using the Bombieri and Lagarias' identity, we prove that the positivity of these truncations implies the Riemann hypothesis. If these truncations have suitable upper bounds, we prove that all nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function lie on the critical line.

Abstract:
Objective Septal myectomy remains the criterion standard for the treatment of patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy refractory to medical therapy. There have been few reports of minimally invasive approaches. This study compared a minimally invasive septal myectomy performed at our institution with the traditional full-sternotomy approach. Methods Patients receiving a stand-alone septal myectomy were retrospectively reviewed from November 1999 to December 2016 (N = 120). Patients were stratified by surgical approach: traditional full sternotomy (n = 34) and ministernotomy (n = 86). Preoperative and perioperative variables were compared as well as follow-up symptomatic and echocardiographic outcomes. Results Both groups had a significant decrease in New York Heart Association class heart failure symptoms ( P < 0.001). At a mean ± SD follow-up time of 2.0 ± 3.4 years, postoperative New York Heart Association class distribution was similar between ministernotomy and full sternotomy ( P = 0.684). Follow-up resting left ventricular outflow tract gradient was also similar between ministernotomy and full sternotomy (11 mm Hg ± 15 vs 9 mm Hg ± 13, P = 0.381). Perioperatively, ministernotomy was not significantly different from full sternotomy in median cardiopulmonary bypass time (81 minutes vs 78 minutes, P = 0.101) but had a slightly longer median cross-clamp time (39 minutes vs 35 minutes, P = 0.017). Major complications were similar in the two groups. There was one 30-day mortality in the full-sternotomy group, but no in-hospital deaths. Conclusions Septal myectomy performed using a minimally invasive approach has similar outcomes to the criterion standard operation done through a full sternotomy. It represents a feasible option for patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy unresponsive to medications.

Abstract:
Posttraumatic stress related to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and general psychological distress were examined in six cohorts of college students (N=5,412) enrolled at an American public university between Spring 2000 and Fall 2002 some 2,500 miles from New York. Consistent with data from Schuster et al.'s (2001) national survey, which used a very low threshold criterion, our findings revealed that 44% of women and 32% of men experienced at least one symptom of posttraumatic stress 6-17 days after the attacks. In contrast to these results, depression levels showed only small differences, and self-esteem and trait anxiety showed no changes. Findings indicate that 9/11-related stress responses among distant witnesses were very mild, transitory and focused in scope, suggesting resilience with respect to broader psychological and psychopathological reactions. Findings are discussed with respect to the role of physical and psychological proximity on the reactions to traumatic events in the general population.

Abstract:
Background: The Heart Failure Somatic Perception Scale (HFSPS) is a four-factor instrument used to assess how bothersome are 18 physical signs and symptoms of heart failure. To date, construct validity and reliability of the HFSPS have been evaluated in only one American study and never in a European population. Aim: To evaluate psychometric properties (validity and reliability) of the HFSPS in a European heart failure population. Methods: This was an Italian multicentre study in which the HFSPS factorial structure was assessed using confirmatory factor analysis. Criterion related validity of the HFSPS was evaluated by correlating its factor scores with the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ) scores using Pearson’s r. The HFSPS internal consistency reliability was evaluated using the factor score determinacy coefficient, Cronbach’s α and model-based internal consistency index. Results: Most of the participants ( n=321) were male (56.6%), with a mean age of 71.48 years (SD, 12.75) and in New York Heart Association class II (61.8%). The confirmatory factor analysis, testing the original HFSPS four-factor structure (dyspnoea, chest discomfort, early and subtle, and oedema), resulted in the following supportive fit indices: χ2 (126, N=321)=337.612, p<0.001, comparative fit index =0.920, Tucker–Lewis index =0.903, root mean square error of approximation =0.072 and standardized root mean square residual =0.045. With regard to the criterion related validity, all the correlations with the KCCQ were statistically significant. The HFSPS reliability resulted in factor score determinacy coefficients ⩾ 0.87 and Cronbach’s α ⩾ 0.75, with the exception of the two-item chest discomfort subscale; the model-based reliability coefficient was 0.914. Conclusion: The validity and reliability of the HFSPS were supportive in this European sample. The HFSPS can be used to assess how bothersome heart failure signs and symptoms are in order to improve their management.

Abstract:
Pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) >3 Wood units is a criterion of the haemodynamic definition of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). However, this cut-off is conservative and arbitrarily defined. Data is lacking on the natural history, response to therapy and survival of patients diagnosed with precapillary pulmonary hypertension (PH) with mild or borderline elevation of PVR.In Australia, PAH therapy could be prescribed solely on mean pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) and pulmonary arterial wedge pressure (PAWP) criteria. Using the Australian and New Zealand Pulmonary Hypertension Registry, we aimed to study a population diagnosed with PAH between January 2004 and December 2017 with the pre-defined haemodynamic characteristics of mean PAP ≥25 mmHg, PAWP ≤15 mmHg and PVR <3 Wood units.Eighty-two patients met the pre-defined haemodynamic inclusion criteria (mean age 63±11 years; 67 females). Underlying aetiologies included idiopathic disease (n=39), connective tissue disease (CTD; n=42) and HIV infection (n=1). At diagnosis, mean PAP was 27 mmHg (interquartile range (IQR) 25–30 mmHg), PAWP 13 mmHg (IQR 11–14 mmHg) and PVR 2.2 Wood units (IQR 1.9–2.7 Wood units). Baseline 6-min walk distance (6MWD) was 352 m (IQR 280–416 m) and 77% of subjects were in New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class 3 or 4. All patients were commenced on initial monotherapy with an endothelin receptor antagonist (ERA; n=66) or phosphodiesterase type-5 inhibitor (PDE5i; n=16). At first re-evaluation, 6MWD increased by 46 m (IQR 7–96 m) and 35% of subjects demonstrated improvement in NYHA functional class. After a median follow-up of 65 months (IQR 32–101 months), 18 out of 82 subjects (22.0%) had died, with estimated 1-year and 5-year survival rates of 98% and 84%, respectively. Death attributed to PAH occurred in six out of these 18 patients (33.3%, 7% of total cohort).Patients with precapillary PH and “borderline” PVR falling outside the current definition have adverse outcomes. Such patients appear to respond to PAH therapy; however, this requires further study in randomised trials.

Abstract:
Objective.Patients with chronic low back pain (cLBP) and vertebral endplate Modic I signal changes on lumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have clinical features that could mimic inflammatory back pain related to spondyloarthritis (SpA) and/or ankylosing spondylitis (AS). We aimed to assess whether such patients fulfilled criteria for SpA and/or AS.Methods.For 5 months in 2008, all patients (n = 314) referred to a tertiary care physical medicine and rehabilitation facility in France were consecutively screened. A total of 185 hospitalized for non-specific cLBP were prospectively assessed. Forty patients fulfilling inclusion criteria were consecutively enrolled and included in 2 groups according to MRI findings: Modic I (n = 15) and non-Modic I (n = 25). MRI findings were assessed independently by 2 spine specialists and a radiologist. HLA-B27 status was determined. Data were collected on clinical measurements and fulfillment of Amor criteria (AC) and modified New York criteria (mNYC). All assessors were blinded to HLA-B27 status.Results.Whatever the Modic group, no patient fulfilled AC or mNYC, and mean total scores were comparable [3 ± 2 (range 0–22; p = 0.977), 1 ± 1 (range 0–3; p = 1.000), and 0 ± 0 (range 0–1; p = 1.000) for AC and clinical and radiological mNYC, respectively]. HLA-B27 status was similar in both groups [n = 2 (13%) vs n = 0 (0%); p = 0.135].Conclusion.Patients with cLBP and Modic I vertebral endplate signal changes on lumbar MRI do not fulfill widely used and validated criteria for SpA and/or AS. Such cases are clinically distinct from SpA and AS.

Abstract:
Background:Fibromyalgia (FM) is a very frequent condition in patients with diseases associated with pain syndrome, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and other chronic rheumatic diseases. FM, RA and AS has different clinical characteristics, but can share symptoms such as pain, fatigue and sleep disturbance that leads to delay in appropriation correct diagnosis [1]. For today well known many different criteria for FM: 1990 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) classification criteria, modified 2010 ACR diagnostic criteria, 2016 Fibromyalgia Diagnostic Criteria and new AAPT Diagnostic Criteria for Fibromyalgia. According to the literature, prevalence FM in AS patients can reach from 12.6 to 28.5%, but prevalence estimates should be interpreted with care as no data that the criteria for FM have been validated for use in patients with AS and other chronic inflammatory arthritis [1, 2]. The lack of appropriate information needs further investigation for better identification FM.Objectives:The aim of our study was to compare the presence of FM by 1990 ACR classification criteria, modified 2010 ACR diagnostic criteria, 2016 Fibromyalgia Diagnostic Criteria and new criteria FM 2019 - AAPT Diagnostic Criteria for Fibromyalgia in AS patients. Methods:One hundred and thirteen AS patients (19 women and 94 men) with mean age (M ± SD) 42.3±10.94 years were enrolled in the study. Diagnosis AS was established according to modified New York criteria. For FM detection were used 1990 ACR classification criteria, modified 2010 ACR diagnostic criteria, 2016 Fibromyalgia Diagnostic Criteria and AAPT Diagnostic Criteria for Fibromyalgia. All patients were asked to complete self-reported disease-related questionnaires for patients with AS.Results:According 1990 ACR criteria, FM met in 26 patients (23%). 38.1% patients were positively screened for FM due to modified 2010 ACR diagnostic criteria, and in 31.9% patients according 2016 Fibromyalgia Diagnostic Criteria, and in 41.6% patients due to AAPT Diagnostic Criteria for Fibromyalgia. All new criteria correlated with 1990 ACR classification criteria with p<0,01: r=0.654, r=0.664, r=0.520, concordantly. Using the ROC analysis, we evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of different FM criteria in patients with AS. Our results showed high diagnostic value of all new criteria, but the most sensitive for detection FM in patients with AS were the modified 2010 ACR diagnostic criteria with sensitivity of 96% and specificity of 79%.Conclusion:Our study results confirmed very high prevalence FM in patients with AS.The most sensitive tool for detection FM in patients with AS were the modified 2010 ACR diagnostic criteria with sensitivity of 96% and specificity of 79%.The similar percentages of FM due to different classification criteria might be a good sign in context of the validity of these criteria for AS patient.References:[1]Zhao, S. Abstract:
BackgroundThe new Assessment of SpondyloArthritis international Society (ASAS) criteria classify axial spondyloarthritis (SpA) into human leucocyte antigen-B27 and/or imaging-based arms. To aid implementation, ASAS has proposed a definition of a positive MRI for active sacroiliitis.ObjectiveThe authors aimed to test the diagnostic and predictive value of the ASAS criteria and definition of a ‘positive’ MRI.MethodsBaseline MRI scans on 29 patients with early inflammatory back pain and 18 controls were read independently by four experienced rheumatologists. Both arms of the criteria were tested against a ‘gold standard’ of physician diagnosis of SpA. MRI abnormalities were assessed according to a global assessment of MRI and the ASAS definition. Sensitivity, specificity and likelihood ratios for individual and concordant reader data were calculated for axial SpA diagnosis at baseline and the development of radiographic sacroiliitis, fulfilling the modified New York criteria at 8 years.ResultsAll patients were classified as having axial SpA, with more patients fulfilling the imaging arm (83%, n=24/29) than the human leucocyte antigen B27 arm (62%, n=18/29). Concordant reader data showed that the baseline MRI had high diagnostic utility for SpA according to global assessment (sensitivity/specificity: 66%/94%, LR+ (positive likelihood ratio) 11.8, LR− (negative likelihood ratio) 0.4) and ASAS definition (sensitivity/specificity: 79%/89%, LR+ 7.1, LR− 0.2). Likewise, a positive baseline MRI had 100% sensitivity for subsequent radiographic sacroiliitis by either assessment, although specificity was lower (56% for global assessment and 33% for ASAS definition).ConclusionBoth arms of the ASAS criteria have good diagnostic utility in early SpA, although they are of limited value for the prediction of radiographic progression. This may be due to the definition of a positive MRI for sacroiliitis that lacks specificity at baseline.

Abstract:
Abstract Background The United States is experiencing one of the largest and longest measles outbreaks since elimination was declared in 2000 and is at risk of losing this status. Most cases occurring in NYS were reported in undervaccinated communities. Methods We included all confirmed NYS measles cases (excluding NYC) from outbreak counties from October 1, 2018 to July 25, 2019. We used the CSTE measles case definition requiring an acute febrile rash illness and either laboratory confirmation or direct epidemiologic linkage to a lab-confirmed case. For each case, demographic and clinical characteristics were obtained. A medical record review was completed for those reported to have an encounter at a hospital, emergency department, or urgent care center. Results There were 371 cases of measles reported, including 11 internationally imported cases. Most occurred in Rockland county (n = 283); followed by Orange (n = 55), Westchester (n = 18), Sullivan (n = 14) and Greene (n = 1) (Figures 1 and 2). The median age was 5.5 years; 79% of all cases occurred among children younger than 18 years of age (Figure 3). Most cases (79%) had not received any doses of measles vaccine. Of the 371 cases, 263 (71%) were children who had received 0 doses of measles, mumps, rubella vaccine (MMR), 218 (83%) of whom were over 1 year of age (Table 1). There have been no deaths or documented cases of encephalitis. Twenty-eight (8%) patients were diagnosed with pneumonia and 25 (7%) patients were hospitalized. Among 17 hospitalized children, 5 (29%) were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) (ages 1 day to 7 years). There were two preterm births at 34 and 25 weeks gestation to women with measles while pregnant. During October 1, 2018–July 31, 2019, providers in outbreak counties vaccinated 72,465 individuals with MMR, a 46% increase from the same period the year prior. Conclusion Unvaccinated children were identified as the largest group affected and experienced severe complications; nearly 30% of hospitalized children were admitted to an ICU. These data support the critical need for continued education and outreach on the risks of measles and the value of vaccination to prevent continued circulation in undervaccinated communities and potential further cases of severe disease. Abstract:
This dissertation looks into the Newburgh, New York affair so as to unfold the existence a strong conservative critique of welfare programs in New York State between 1945 and 1975. It thus purports to write a social and political history of local and grassroots mobilizations against welfare in the liberal Northeast

Abstract:
Based on the principle that cities are well aware of their own position, this thesis shows how two world cities, Paris and New York, built their physical public space by interacting one with the other. This takes place in the late 19th century and the early 20th century. The particular dynamics of this relationship is due to the fact that, first Paris, then New York, is the foremost model of urban modernity. By studying, on both sides, the reciprocal knowledge, the expressions of urban desires, rejections and ambitions as well as urban visions in regards to the other city, this thesis reconstructs a complicated and passionate history. To do this, it analyses texts and images from the professional sphere of architects and engineers as well as from the public sphere and the art world. The history between Paris and New York, thanks to the reversal of one model toward the other, gives a new insight in the more generally cultural aspects that both world cities associate with the modernity of either one. It is a history where the desires and obstacles lead to a far more complexe relationship to modernity itself. Only superficially symmetrical, this relationship is, in fact, profoundly asymmetrical

Abstract:
My doctoral research concerns the study of Jewish life and culture in Lugo (Italy) thanks to a careful examination of the Register of deaths (Pinqas ha-nifṭarim) Qahal Qadosh Lugo, a source of great importance compiled in Hebrew between 1658 and 1825 and currently stored in the Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, New York. The death recordings encompass almost two centuries and contain invaluable information about the history and Rabbis of the community. Of particular interest was the Barocco style of several poems composed in honour of leading people, the accurate description of the funerary culture of the Jews and for the genealogical reconstruction of many important Jewish families, such as Fano, Sinigaglia, Del Vecchio, Jacchia and others. This information has been compared with those present in the contemporary Community registers. The lists of members who participated in the board meetings, in fact, allow us to have a lot of information of great interest about the eminent members of the community and to reconstruct not only the demographic context of the Jewish community but also the evolution and ways of its development. The manuscript also contains the statutes of Ḥevrat Gemilut Ḥasadim (Good Works or Mercy Society) of Jewish community of Lugo. This association handled the burial of each member of the community and its activities specifically consisted in looking after the family members of the dying preparing the body before the burial; organizing the funeral procession and ceremony; cemetery maintenance; assisting mourners; saying ritual prayers; distributing provisions and medicine for sick people. It was instituted on 16 Hešwan 5418, i.e. 23rd October 1657. The text of the statutes shows a very interesting insight of religious and social welfare life of the Jews of Lugo

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractInternationally there is growing interest in how young children engage with and learn concepts of science and sustainability in their everyday lives. These concepts are often built through nature and outdoor play in young children. Through the dialectical concept of everyday and scientific concept formation (Vygotsky LS, The collected works of L.S. Vygotsky. Problems of general psychology, V.1, (Trans. N Minick). Editor of English Translation, RW Rieber, and AS Carton, New York: Kluwer Academic and Plenum Publishers, 1987), this chapter presents a study of how families transformatively draw attention to STEM and sustainability concepts in the everyday practices of the home. The research followed a focus child (4–5 year old) from four families as they navigated everyday life and talked about the environments in which they live. Australia as a culturally diverse community was reflected in the families, whose heritage originated in Europe, Iran, India, Nepal and Taiwan. The study identified the multiple ways in which families introduce practices and conceptualise imagined futures and revisioning (Payne PG, J HAIA 12:2–12, 2005a). About looking after their environment. It was found that young children appear to develop concepts of STEM, but also build agency in exploration, with many of these explorations taking place in outdoor settings. We conceptualise this as a motive orientation to caring for the environment, named as E-STEM. The study emphasises for education to begin with identifying family practices and children’s explorations, as a key informant for building relevant and locally driven pedagogical practices to support environmental learning.

Chaozhong Li of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry demonstrated (Organic Lett. 2008, 10, 4037) facile and selective Cu-catalyzed β-lactam formation, converting 1 to 2. Paul Helquist of the University of Notre Dame devised (Organic Lett. 2008, 10, 3903) an effective catalyst for intramolecular alkyne hydroamination, converting 3 into the imine 4. Six-membered ring construction worked well also. Jon T. Njardarson of Cornell University found (Organic Lett. 2008, 10, 5023) a Cu catalyst for the rearrangement of alkenyl aziridines such as 5 to the pyrroline 6. Philippe Karoyan of the UPMC, Paris developed (J. Org. Chem. 2008, 73, 6706) an interesting chiral auxiliary directed cascade process, converting the simple precursor 7 into the complex pyrrolidine 9. Sherry R. Chemler of the State University of New York, Buffalo devised (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 17638) a chiral Cu catalyst for the cyclization of 10, to give 12 with substantial enantiocontrol. Wei Wang of the University of New Mexico demonstrated (Chem. Commun. 2008, 5636) the organocatalyzed condensation of 13 and 14 to give 16 with high enantio- and diastereocontrol. Two complementary routes to azepines/azepinones have appeared. F. Dean Toste of the University of California, Berkeley showed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 9244) that a gold complex catalyzed the condensation of 17 and 18 to give 19. Frederick G. West of the University of Alberta found (Organic Lett. 2008, 10, 3985) that lactams such as 20 could be ring-expanded by the addition of the propiolate anion 21. Takeo Kawabata of Kyoto University extended (Organic Lett . 2008, 10, 3883) “memory of chirality” studies to the cyclization of 23, demonstrating that 24 was formed in high ee. Paul V. Murphy of University College Dublin took advantage (Organic Lett . 2008, 10, 3777) of the well-known intramolecular addition of azides to alkenes, showing that the intermediate could be intercepted with nucleophiles such as thiophenol, to give the cyclized product 26 with high diastereocontrol.

Abstract:
The reduction of pyridines offers an attractive approach to piperidine synthesis, and now Toshimichi Ohmura and Michinori Suginome of Kyoto University have developed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2012, 134, 3699) a rhodium-catalyzed hydroboration of pyridines, including the reaction of 1 to produce 3. Timothy J. Donohoe at the University of Oxford has found (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 2074) that pyridinium silanes 4 undergo intramolecular hydride transfer by treatment with TBAF to produce dihydropyridones (e.g., 5) with good diastereoselectivity. Enantioselective amination of allylic alcohols has proven challenging, but Ross A. Widenhoefer at Duke University has reported (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 1405) that a chiral gold catalyst can effect such intramolecular cyclizations with good enantioselectivity, as in the synthesis of 7 from 6. Alternatively, Masato Kitamura at Nagoya University has developed (Org. Lett. 2012, 14, 608) a ruthenium catalyst that operates at as low as 0.05 mol% loading for the conversion of substrates such as 8 to 9. Efforts to replace transition metal catalysts with alkaline earth metal-based alternatives have been gaining increasing attention, and Kai C. Hultzsch at Rutgers University has found (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 394) that the magnesium complex 12 is capable of catalyzing intramolecular hydroamination (e.g., 10 to 11) with high enantioselectivity. Meanwhile, a stereoselective Wacker-type oxidation of tert-butanesulfinamides such as 13 to produce pyrrolidine derivatives 14 has been disclosed (Org. Lett. 2012, 14, 1242) by Shannon S. Stahl at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Though highly desirable, Heck reactions have rarely proven feasible with alkyl halides due to competitive β-hydride elimination of the alkyl palladium intermediates. Sherry R. Chemler at the State University of New York at Buffalo has demonstrated (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2012, 134, 2020) a copper-catalyzed enantioselective amination Heck-type cascade (e.g., 15 and 16 to 17) that is thought to proceed via radical intermediates. David L. Van Vranken at the University of California at Irvine has reported (Org. Lett. 2012, 14, 3233) the carbenylative amination of N-tosylhydrazones, which proceeds through η3-allyl Pd intermediates constructed via carbene insertion. This chemistry was applied to the two-step synthesis of caulophyllumine B from vinyl iodide 18 and N-tosylhydrazone 19.

Abstract:
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) performed a detailed technical review of the 2015 Electrabel (EBL) Safety Cases prepared for the Belgium reactor pressure vessels (RPVs) at Doel 3 and Tihange 2 (D3/T2). The Federal Agency for Nuclear Control (FANC) in Belgium commissioned ORNL to provide a thorough assessment of the existing safety margins against cracking of the RPVs due to the presence of almost laminar flaws found in each RPV. Initial efforts focused on surveying relevant literature that provided necessary background knowledge on the issues related to the quasi-laminar flaws observed in D3/T2 reactors. Next, ORNL proceeded to develop an independent quantitative assessment of the entire flaw population in the two Belgian reactors according to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section XI, Appendix G, “Fracture Toughness Criteria for Protection Against Failure,” New York (both 1992 and 2004 versions). That screening assessment of the EBL-characterized flaws in D3/T2 used ORNL tools, methodologies, and the ASME Code Case N-848, “Alternative Characterization Rules for Quasi-Laminar Flaws”. Results and conclusions derived from comparisons of the ORNL flaw acceptance assessments of D3/T2 with those from the 2015 EBL Safety Cases are presented in the paper. The ORNL screening analyses identified fewer flaws than EBL that were not compliant with the ASME Section XI (1992) criterion; the EBL criterion imposed additional conservatisms not included in ASME Section XI. Furthermore, ORNL’s application of the updated ASME Section XI (2004) criterion produced only four non-compliant flaws, all due to design-basis loss-of-coolant loading transients. Among the latter, only one flaw remained non-compliant when analyzed using the warm-prestress (WPS) cleavage fracture model typically applied in USA flaw assessments. ORNL’s independent refined analysis of that flaw (#1660, which was also non-compliant in the EBL screening assessments) rendered it compliant when modeled as a more realistic individual quasi-laminar flaw using a 3-dimensional XFEM (eXtended Finite Element Method) approach available in the ABAQUS© finite element code. Taken as a whole, the ORNL-specific results and conclusions confirmed the structural integrity of Doel 3 and Tihange 2 under all design transients with ample margin in the presence of the 16,196 detected flaws.

Abstract:
<p>The new Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge spans the Hudson River between Rockland and Westchester Counties in southern New York. A key design criterion was to accommodate various modes of transportation in the future. This paper discusses how the bridges will accommodate dedicated bus rapid transit lanes as well as the potential future construction of a transit bridge between the structures without installing additional foundations in the river. The transit bridge would require significant rail construction on either side of the river to provide viable connections to existing rail lines, making it prohibitively expensive. The transit bridge will fit between the two highway bridges and carry two rail lines. We will explain how the highway bridges will accommodate the future rail bridge without providing needless excess capacity into the piers and foundations built under this design-build contract.</p>

Abstract:
<p>Under-deck cable-stayed (UDCS) footbridges are slender structures that promote the axial behaviour. This allows designers to take advantage of the entire sectional areas and reduce the required construction materials. Besides their high structural efficiency and sustainability, they also possess a number of other advantages such as multiple construction possibilities and strong aesthetic characteristics, therefore becoming an attractive solution in urban infrastructure. However, due to their slenderness, they are more prone to vibrations. Recent closures of footbridges of this typology, indicate that fundamental aspects of their structural response still remained unclear. This paper presents a set of example bridges built with this typology and a detailed investigation of a benchmark case under the dynamic action of pedestrians. Results show that, although ULS is satisfied using a very high deck slenderness (1/100), the SLS of vibrations is the critical design criterion that governs the slenderness of the deck (leading to values of 1/60).</p>

Abstract:
<p>Structural optimization of arches under multi-load cases is faced. For this aim, truss-type arches are to be considered because, under different load cases, bending effects unavoidably occur in single-rib arches shaped under one load case only. An effective procedure for simultaneous topology, shape and size optimization of truss-arches under multi-load cases is proposed. For this aim, shape, size and topology variables are assembled in a unique set of variables that are simultaneously optimised by the optimization algorithm. For given Pratt-type brace pattern, different topologies have been considered by varying the node number, whereas Cubic Rational Bézier curves have been used to shape the arch chords. Optimum diameter and thickness of the circular hollow section members was also obtained. Optimization was performed in MATLAB environment, by applying a modified Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm implemented with a Constraint Domination Selection (CDS) criterion. For each design variable vector, a FEM analysis of the resulting model has been carried out by SAP2000 to evaluate the objective function value (volume) feasibility of each design variable vector in terms of structural performance. Optimal solutions have been found and compared, providing useful suggestions to consider as guidelines in truss-arche design.</p>

Abstract:
<p>Along with building slender and longer span structures, vibration serviceability becomes more important considerations in bridge design and maintenance. In this study, vibration serviceability and deflection limit for long span cable bridges are investigated using long-term monitoring data such as accelerations and displacements of bridges. Exampled bridges are Yi Sun-Sin Grand Bridge (suspension bridge, main span length=1,545m) and 2nd Jindo Grand Bridge (cable stayed bridge, main span length=344m). Long-term data are analyzed and compared with various design codes, guidelines, and other research results. Probability of exceedance are calculated for each criterion. Regarding on deflection limits, Korean Bridge Design Code (Limit State Design) specifies L/400 and L/350 for cable stayed and suspension bridges, respectively. Saadeghvaziri suggested deflection limit based on natural frequency, acceleration limit of 0.5 m/s² and vehicle speed. Various human comfort criteria on vibration are also applied including ISO standards. The results of this study are expected to be useful reference for the design, the proper planning and deflection review of the long span cable bridges around the world. Further researches are required to find the optimum deflection or vibration criteria for long span bridge and their effects on bridge clearance and elevation.</p>

Abstract:
<p>In the design of super-long-span bridges, the wind actions are commonly a governing criterion. Critical design checks for wind-induced vibrations involve experimental and numerical procedures for determination of the flutter instability threshold, commonly under laminar free-stream. The influence of free-stream turbulence on the critical flutter velocity of bridge decks still represents an open topic in bridge aerodynamics. This paper presents an investigation of the influence of free-stream deterministic gusts on the critical flutter velocity using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Deterministic free-stream harmonic gusts are simulated by modelling the wake of two flapping airfoils using the two-dimensional Vortex Particle Method (VPM). These gusts are then applied to a streamlined bridge deck and the oscillation amplitudes are studied for various gust amplitudes and frequencies. The results indicate that the critical flutter velocity is reduced for harmonic gusts with a frequency similar to the critical frequency under laminar free-stream, while it is not in affect for gust frequencies corresponding to the structural frequencies. By dissecting the random free-stream into harmonic gusts, this study aims to provide a deeper understanding of the physical processes occurring in the fluid-structure interaction near the instability threshold.</p>

Abstract:
<p>This paper presented an evaluation of mechanical properties of ballastless track system using finite element model developed in ABAQUS. CRTS III ballastless track model composed of steel rails, fasteners, perfabricated concrete slabs, intermediate and base layers, was chosen. The track model has a length of 16.8 m in longitudinal direction and the computation was limited to static analysis and linear-elastic material stress- strain relation. In this numerical analysis, steel rails were modeled as beam elements, fasteners were modeled as spring connectors, and prefabricated slabs, intermediate layer as well as base layer were modeled as 3D solid elements. Soil support was represented as elastic foundation throughout the length of the track model. Contact condition between track components was facilitated through surface contact elements having frictionless type. Load model LM-71 suggested by EN 1991-2 was applied to the track model through a load factor (k1) and soil elastic foundation coefficient (ks) varied from 0.01 N/mm³ to 0.06 N/mm³. Initially, patch test analysis to ensure convergence of the numerical solution were conducted, as well as performing simple analysis using one point load acting on the track model to compare the numerical results with the calculation given by Zimmermann and Westergaard methods provided by EN 16432-2 (2017). The numerical results indicated that the axial fastener force and flexural stress steel rail has a linear function with respect to kl, while the deflection of steel rail, flexural stress of frefabricated concrete slab, intermediate layer and base layer is best described by α(ks)βk1 where α and β are constants. As minimum subgrade modulus stiffness required by EN 16432-1 (2017) equal to 60 N/mm², which is equivalent to subgrade modulus reaction ks of 0.0153 N/mm³, load factor k1 equals to 1.28 will yield steel rail deflection of 6 mm, the allowable value suggested by American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-way Association.</p>

Abstract:
<p>The U-shaped rib-to-deck welded joint in orthotropic steel deck is a part with multiple fatigue cracks. The penetration rate which is the ratio of penetration depth to U-shaped rib thickness has an important influence on fatigue performance of partial joint penetration (PJP) welds. In this study, the influence of penetration rate on the fatigue performance of U-shaped rib-to-deck welded joints was studied. Firstly, the finite element model of U-shaped rib-to-deck welded joints with penetration rate of 65%, 75%, 85% and complete joint penetration (CJP) welds were established. The mechanical characteristics of different welding forms under typical loading conditions were analyzed. It was found that with the increase of penetration rate of PJP welds, the stress concentration at the weld root weakened. Then fatigue tests on specimens with different weld penetration rate were carried out. The fatigue cracks of CJP welds all started at the inner welding toe of the U-shaped rib. However, the fatigue cracks of PJP welds mainly started at the welding root of the unfused weld. Fatigue S-N curves for PJP and CJP were regressed, respectively, it could be found that the fatigue performance of CJP welds was superior to that of PJP welds.</p>

Cartographying the real metropolis: A proposal for a data-based planning beyond the administrative boundaries. Juan R. Selva-Royo¹, Nuño Mardones¹, Alberto Cendoya² ¹University of Navarra, School of Architecture, Department of Theory and Design, University of Navarra Campus, 31080 Pamplona, Spain; ²University of Navarra, ICS, Navarra Center for International Development, University of Navarra Campus, 31080, Pamplona, Spain E-mail: jrselva@unav.es, nmardones@unav.es, cendoya.alberto@gmail.com Keywords (3-5): Data planning, metropolitan areas, big data, urban extent, good governance Conference topics and scale: Cartography and big data Nowadays, there is a great gap between the functional reality of urban agglomerations and their planning, largely because of the traditional linkage of urban management to the administrative limits inherited from the past. It is also true that the regulation of urban activities, including census and statistical information, requires a closer view of its citizens that can only be addressed from the municipal level. In any case, it is clear that the metropolitan delimitation has met useful but often ethereal or exclusionary criteria (economic or labor patterns, functional areas...), which become disfigured by an administrative reality that does not always correspond to the real metropolis. This paper, aware of the new cartographic possibilities linked to the big data - CORINE Land Cover, SIOSE, multi-sector digital atlases (in many cases referred to the urban extent, etc.) and other open system platforms - explores the evidence that might base a new objective methodology for the delimitation and planning of large urban areas. Indeed, what if basic data for cities would arise not from administrative entities but from independent outside approaches such as satellite imagery? What if every single sensing unit (every citizen, company, building or vehicle) directly issued relevant and dynamic information without going through the municipal collection? Finally, the research analyzes the eventual implications of this data-based planning with administrative structures and urban planning competencies in force through some current case studies, with the purpose of achieving a more efficient and clear metropolitan governance for our planet. Abstract:
Based on the theory of conservation of potential energy, design of a gravity-balancing spatial articulated manipulator by the use of a proposed spring mechanism is presented. Since the gravitational potential energy of the mass system of a spatial articulated manipulator of n links depends only on the orientation of each link within the system, the entire manipulator can then be considered to be equivalent to an array of n degenerated ground-adjacent links in the aspect of the potential energy. Moreover, since the gravitational potential energy of a rotary link moving in a vertical plane is a trigonometric function and the Scotch york mechanism is also a well-known harmonic motion generator, a new spring mechanism composed of a Scotch york, a compression spring, and a gear pair is used to balance the gravitational potential energy of each degenerated link. With a built-in spring mechanism embedded on each joint of the articulated manipulator, the entire spatial articulated manipulator maintains can be in equilibrium at all configurations, which is verified by the simulation of the system modeled in a commercial software Pro-Engineer. The prototyping of a practical system will be implemented in the near future.
