Abstract:
We describe a rare case of end-stage haemophiliac joint disease with inhibitors to factor VIII. Using recombinant factor VIIa treatment, the patient was able to undergo major orthopaedic procedures not previously possible. Although the estimated cost of putting this patient through surgery, prosthetic fitting and rehabilitation is close to £500,000, we hope his overall care requirements will be reduced following the successful surgery and that he will require considerably less in the way of analgesics with an improved independent quality of life for many years.

This paper explores the application of an informal shape grammar whose purpose is to generate new house designs in the hayat style. The hayat is a large shaded gallery open to the garden. It occupies the most important place in the composition of the house. The study is based on a corpus of eight hayat houses designed in the classic Ottoman style in the 18th and 19th centuries in Sarajevo. In this paper, the emphasis is on the generation of new houses. The informal grammar does not explain the designs in detail but rather generates new house designs by transferring some knowledge embedded in o

ABSTRACTThis paper examines the new styles of houses under construction in contemporary Tanzania and suggests that they can be understood as the material manifestation of middle class growth. Through an examination of the architecture, interior decor and compound space in a sample of these new houses in urban Dar es Salaam and rural Kilimanjaro, the paper identifies four domestic aesthetics: the respectable house, the locally aspirant house, the globally aspirant house and the minimalist house, each of which map on to ideas aboutujamaa, liberalisation and the consumption of global consumer goo

The Casa di Sallustio at Pompeii is one of the houses that belongs in every book and study on domestic life and architecture in the Roman era. The fact that it was excavated at the start of the 19th c., however, means that large parts of its decoration have long since been lost through weathering and neglect, a situation further compounded by the damage resulting from Allied bombing in 1943. In order to reconstruct, as accurately as possible, a picture of the house as it stood in antiquity, it is therefore particularly important to evaluate all the historical visual sources that document the h

Abstract The essay describes Carolee Schneemann's residence, a stone house constructed in 1750 by Huguenot settlers on land of the Munsee Lenape people, and its central role in her life and work from the early 1960s until her death in 2019. The essay gives particular attention to Schneemann's text “Parts of a Body House” (1957–67), a series of paragraphs composed over a decade that describe a network of biomorphic structures and multimedia environments. After a certain point in time, it was no longer acceptable to build in a manner reflective of the current conditions.
