Abstract:
Stories have always been present in the life of people as a part of their culture, it is a rather ancient narrative technique. The message delivered in a form of a story is specifically appealing to listeners, which makes it a powerful communication tool. The thesis explores storytelling practices in project management by answering the question: “How project managers use storytelling in new business process implementation in ICT projects?” The choice of the topic was driven by the gap in the literature and the choice of context was chosen by the level of maturity of project management in ICT industry. Within the framework of interpretivist research paradigm, the data was collected by interviewing ten project managers of new business process implementation in ICT projects. The thesis findings suggest that storytelling in implementation of new business processes in ICT projects is used in formal and informal forums in written and verbal format. Project managers use storytelling to pursue several goals: making sense of ICT projects, human resource management, promoting adaptation to new business processes, knowledge management and attracting new customers and investments into ICT projects. Storytelling in ICT projects is also limited by storytelling conditions, such as organizational culture, extent of change, governance structure. Storytelling in projects is subject to challenges, such as logistics and timeliness of practices. From the practical point of view, the thesis explores storytelling as an effective communication tool that can be used for multiple goals in project management. It allows adding storytelling to the requirement list of new soft competences of project managers. The thesis has bridged a literature gap between storytelling and project management, which opens new theoretical perspective of interpreting the reality in projects and creates space for further research.

The increasingly integrated presence of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) on university campuses in recent decades has prompted calls for a better understanding of how students use ICTs in higher education, including the transition to college. While research indicates that students with higher self-efficacy are more likely to persist in college, current research makes few connections between students’ self-efficacy with ICTs and persistence. Additionally, researchers in the area of student retention call for educators to understand how their students perceive the college’s cultural environment so as to help students fit in at an institution and persist. Exploration of ICTs as part of a student’s social, academic, and cultural experiences at the university offers educators and administrators the possibility of modifying the college’s cultural properties in response to student needs. This qualitative study investigated first-year college students and their use of technologies to address the following research question: How do first-year college students perceive their experiences using Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in the higher education environment? Employing interviews and a phenomenological approach, this study explored the experiences of 19 undergraduate students. Six faculty members or instructors were interviewed about their teaching experiences with first-year students and the extent to which ICTs were incorporated in those experiences in order to provide triangulation of data. Through the analysis of interview transcripts and open coding, three themes emerged regarding how students experience ICTs in higher education. Statements from students and faculty suggest that students experienced ICTs in higher education as: a process of academic integration; situations for which they held internal or external loci of control when using them for academic purposes; and tools to use when becoming socially integrated into the university. The findings of this study have the potential to assist university faculty, instructors, and other staff who are designing courses and services for first-year students. First, the study’s findings indicate that instructors need to be as explicit as possible with their expectations of student use of technology. When students are expected to demonstrate certain behaviors with ICTs those behaviors should be both supported and modeled by faculty and instructors. Secondly, when using ICTs for academic purposes, faculty can help students feel more responsible for their learning by providing them with opportunities to make decisions about how ICTs are used or to incorporate their own problem-solving or learning techniques with ICTs when completing coursework. Finally, faculty, instructors, and other staff should be aware that when first-year students are using ICTs socially, they are trying to create and maintain in-person relationships. Faculty, instructors, and other staff can guide first-year students to events and resources that will help them meet people and locate a social group in which they feel like they fit in.

Nilsson, Elina, and Emelie Löfquist. "User perception of new ICT in risk management : A Swedish Case study in construction." Thesis, KTH, Ledning och organisering i byggande och förvaltning, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-277005.

Abstract:
The construction industry today is entirely dependent on the work of projects and these projects are associated with a numerous amount of risks. In order to manage and control these risks, research has shown that efficient strategies are needed, thus, to be able minimize different deviations throughout the entire project life cycle. Functioning risk management is essential for successful construction projects. Research has also shown that the importance of digitalization in the construction industry is increasing rapidly and a result of this technology advancement is an increase in the amount of information that needs to be stored, shared and communicated across the project. In addition, information management is a significant factor in how quality in risk management is maintained, and it is vital to adopt information and communication technologies (ICT) to support this. For ICTs to be accepted, adopted and to reach their full potential it is of essence to understand how users perceive working in a digital environment and to share information and communicate digitally. Thereby, this study aims to study how users perceive a new ICT-tool for digital information sharing and communication, as well as the potential of the ICT-tool to influence the work of risk management within the project. To be able to approach the research questions, elicit data was gathered through a qualitative, empirical case study including interviews, observations and a questionnaire. The case study is delimited to a construction project, Building 61, at Danderyds Hospital and their work of risk-management. The case study analyzes how users perceive the increase of use of digital information sharing and communication of risks followed by the recently implemented ICT-tool, Jira Software. Findings shows that the user perception of communication and sharing information through the ICT-tool is perceived as positive and contributes to the improvement of the management of risks. But even though the amount of information now can be transferred and shared through one platform, and increasing the accessibility, it is found that sharing information and communicating digitally does not eliminate the need for interactive communication in the work of risks. Additionally, despite provided training, there is still need for further integration into existing workprocesses in order to utilize the amount of information generated on to the ICT-tool. Conclusively, the use of the new ICT-tool has been perceived as very useful, but it has also given rise to new challenges, mainly concerned the ability to find information in the tool, which needs to be overcome in order for the ICT to reach its full potential and to improve the work with risk management.

Abstract:
Thesis Purpose: The study aimed to explore how the use of ICT has influenced the leadership role and thus also in what ways this has been helping the practice of the role among middle managers. The study was exploratory as an attempt to understand how the leadership role has been influenced in the new digital era. Theoretical Perspective: Previous literature has been examined where different concepts have been chosen in reference to the study. ICT, its connection to leadership and the composition of the managerial role has been presented in this thesis. Methodology: A qualitative method has been used for this case study with the aim to gain an understanding of the studied area. Collected data was analyzed using an abductive approach which involved back-and-forth engagement with theory and empirical findings.  Empirical study: For this qualitative study, semi-structured interviews was made with four middle managers, all positioned at the case company.  Conclusion: The leadership role was found to be both facilitated and made more difficult due to the use of ICT. Communication as a part of the informational roles among leaders has been facilitated the most. The facilitation of the roles was also found to depend on the technological skills among middle managers and the organisational structure.

Abstract:
This dissertation is a multi-perspective inquiry into the phenomenon of social media use in organizational context. It focuses on the processes of enactment of this new technology and investigates how these developments are embedded in the context of occupational norms, social roles, organizational control and autonomy. The research setting is based on the 19-month social media implementation campaign by a central European media organization as a means of enhancing communication and coordination within the organization. The implementation encompassed two departments, journalists and advertising agents, who were asked to create and open their online social media profiles and befriend their colleagues. The dissertation comprises four research papers each taking a separate perspective on the phenomenon. Methodologically, the dissertation builds on qualitative case-study approach and abductive and inductive reasonings. The thesis provides theoretical and practical contributions to the understanding normative prerequisites, process and consequences of social media use in organizational context for occupational norms, online knowledge collaboration and organizational control while presenting co-evolution of the technology meaning and use

Abstract:
Despite the growing importance of information and communication technologies (ICTs), their use in the field of program evaluation has been, to date, understudied. Using a mixed-method approach and a conceptual framework informed by social interdependence theory, this thesis sought to contribute to this area of research by exploring how evaluation practitioners engage with ICTs, and if and how this influences evaluation use. The comprised two parts are in a cascade design: a qualitative study relied on interviews with practitioners, followed by a quantitative study utilizing a survey instrument to obtain findings from a larger cohort of practitioner respondents. The findings from both studies revealed that ICTs’ value is greater for the use of evaluative results (findings use) than for benefits arising from evaluation processes (process use), and that these tools support evaluation activities by aiding background and foreground processes. When used in the background, ICTs can help evaluators by offering flexibility, improving speed, and efficiency. In contrast, ICTs used for foreground processes help foster communication with and engagement of stakeholders. Together, this makes the use of ICTs a valuable extension to existing evaluator skillsets, especially when the tools are mindfully incorporated to fit a project’s contextual complexity. The findings also point to a number of barriers – at both the individual and organizational levels - that inhibit further integration of technology into evaluation practice. A conceptual framework developed as a result of the findings visually depicts this process, and it represents a significant contribution of the thesis. Given the growing proliferation of ICTs in all aspects of life, further insight through systematic inquiry is much needed to keep abreast of these rapidly changing trends. The provision of such has implications not only for evaluation practitioners, client organizations and professional evaluation associations, but for the ongoing development of empirical inquiry in the area.

Abstract:
Higher education administrators need data on student perceptions to support their decision making regarding mobile learning (m-learning) applications. There is a lack of research addressing students' perceptions of mobile applications for course management systems (CMS). The findings of this study may help administrators understand students' perceptions of a CMS m-learning application, Blackboard Mobile Learn (BML). This m-learning application is available on mobile devices, such as the iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone, Android, and Blackberry smartphones. The purpose of this quantitative survey study was to explore the linear relationship between the independent variables of students' perceptions of usefulness and students' perceptions of ease of use with the dependent variable of the students' intent to use BML. The technology acceptance model (TAM) provided the theoretical framework. The study was a survey-based cross-sectional design in which 98 students from 2 community colleges were polled. The results of multiple regression analyses indicated that students' perceptions of usefulness and students' perceptions of ease of use were both significantly and positively related to students' intent to use BML. The results of t tests for population means where the variances are unknown confirmed the students' intent to use many of the specific functions of BML: Announcements, Information, Contacts, and My Grades. The findings were inconclusive for Discussions, Assignments, and Course Documents. This study is significant in that it provides college administrators and faculty with supportive data, giving students a new educational platform: mobile learning. The key positive social change provided is a CMS m-learning solution for students to be lifelong learners.

Kelegai, Limbie K. "Elements influencing IS success in developing countries: a case study of organisations in Papua New Guinea." Queensland University of Technology, 2005. http://eprints.qut.edu.au/16169/.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the introduction of computers in to organisations in the 1950s, computer information systems have become powerful organisational instruments. The uptake of information technology including information systems (IS) and the impact of these technologies have been phenomenal, particularly in the least developed countries (LDCs). Organisations in these countries have continued to utilise IS as a development tool with the belief that it will enhance business processes, in many instances accelerated by foreign assistance. IS can have a positive effect on users, organisations and national development, measured economically or otherwise at the individual, organisational, and national levels. Yet IS implementation and the measure of its success is characterised by a high rate of failure and disagreement among scholars and practitioners. The success of organisational IS is influenced by a fabric of many variables, including contextual elements. In this regard IS can be influenced by both the organisational context in terms of strategies, structures, politics and culture, and by the wider political socio-economic, cultural, and technological climate within which organisations exist. Understanding the contributing variables and the barriers that impede IS success, would better prepare organisations to overcome the inherent difficulties. There is a large body of work documenting the usefulness and consequences of IS. However, these studies have been concentrated in the developed countries (DCs), hence, little is known about IS implementation in LDCs. DCs and LDCs differ in their contextual and social settings, and a uniform analysis may not be applicable in their disparate settings. Indeed the paucity of research and data in the IS domain indicates that the study would benefit an LDC such as Papua New Guinea (PNG) and contribute to knowledge in understanding IS implementation in an LDC environment. This thesis reports on a study that examined IS implementation success in PNG organisations in the context of an LDC. Computers were introduced to PNG in the 1960s, however, no studies have been undertaken to date in this domain that the author is aware of. Hence, the objective of this study was to provide detailed analysis of IS, the context in which it was implemented, its interaction with organisational and external settings, and elicit the underlying elements associated with its success. It also explores the emphasis placed on each of the elements and the extent to which organisations effectively addressed these elements to ensure IS success. The exploratory study employs a multi method design - beginning in Stage 1 with case studies, followed by a survey in Stage 2. Stage 1 adopted a multiple case study approach. Eight case studies were undertaken, however, results of only four case studies are reported in this thesis. Data obtained in the case studies provide a useful basis for the survey. The study in Stage 2 consolidated and expanded on the case study findings from the perspective of a wider population. All the organisations contacted but not involved in the Stage 1 study contributed by participating in the survey. The study identified more than fifty elements that contributed to the success of IS in PNG organisations. There were significant similarities to the findings of studies in other DCs and LDCs despite the disparate contextual conditions. Several elements, not identified in prior studies, were also revealed. Based on this study, a set of principles pertaining to IS implementation and management in PNG were postulated. Similarly a set of recommendations were also outlined.

Full text
Abstract:
Interactivity research lacks consensus regarding the qualities and consequences of interactive experiences. Empirical proof is needed to substantiate the numerous interactivity theories and provide direction for new media technology developers. Specifically, there is a shortage of research on differences between user experiences of interactivity when technology enables communication versus when it does not. In addition, interactivity research is often confounded by the construct of presence. This study’s objectives included: 1) identifying qualities associated with interactive experiences; 2) disambiguating the constructs of interactivity and presence; and 3) developing a measure of perceived interactivity for VW research. The experimental design measured perceived interactivity and presence following completion of a simple task in the online Virtual World (VW) known as Second Life. It was hypothesized that both perceived interactivity and presence would be greater for subjects encountering avatars believed to be controlled by other people than for subjects encountering no other avatars in the VW. A total of 180 subjects from the University of Kentucky participated in a 2 by 4 factorial experiment. Perceived interactivity was measured by modifying McMillan and Hwang’s Measure of Perceived Interactivity for the VW context. Two essential qualities of interactive experiences were identified: Responsiveness and engagement. These qualities are characteristic of unmediated, FTF conversation, which was perceived as the most interactive communication context above technologies routinely described as interactive. Decreased responsiveness of technology at a second study venue caused significant decline in perceived interactivity, demonstrating the importance of a technology’s reaction speed and control provided to the user. Significant main effects for perceived interactivity due to encountering other avatars were confounded by interaction effects due to differences in technology responsiveness. Interactivity and presence appear to be separate psychological constructs which covary in the context of a new media experience. Implications and directions for future research are discussed.

Abstract:
This study examines decision-making processes involved in the development, integration and management of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in self-managing secondary schools and influences that affect these processes. To obtain an holistic view of ICT decision-making processes, a case study is undertaken of three co-educational, state secondary schools within a regional New Zealand city, thereby establishing a multiple case study. The principal, network manager and three staff nominated by the principal as playing an active role in ICT decision-making processes were interviewed using an open-ended interview. Five frequently cited generic decision-making models, developed by theorists to describe specific features of the decision-making process, are examined to provide a theoretical platform against which the interview data are analysed and interpreted. The study concludes that ICT decision-making in the case study schools is influenced particularly by technical knowledge and understandings. Such decision-making tends to be ad-hoc, isolated from other important influences particularly in relation to teaching and learning issues, and 'bounded' because of limited information, the limitations of existing technology, and the inability of schools to keep abreast of technological changes. Six implications are therefore put forward to inform future ICT decision-making in schools. They are: 1. Schools should develop a strategic plan that is underpinned with technical planning requirements; 2. Technical advice and professional development should be provided for principals; 3. Principals should consult outside the school environment for technical advice to assist with decisions; 4. The role of the ICT committee should be redefined to include planning and development of ICT; 5. Principals should ensure that staff receive professional development; and 6. Schools should consider student access and the best way of integrating ICT into teaching and learning. The study highlights the need for schools to develop strategic plans that address teaching and learning issues in the development, integration and management of ICT in self-managing secondary schools. Technical decisions should be made in support of these.

Joubert, Janine. "Embedding risk management within new product and service development of an innovation and risk management framework and supporting risk processes, for effective risk mitigation : an action research study within the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Sector." Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/20367.

Full text
Abstract:
At first glance, innovation and risk management seem like two opposing disciplines with diverse objectives. The former seeks to be flexible and encourages enhanced solutions and new ideas, while the latter can be seen as stifling such innovative thinking. Since there is a failure rate of as many as eight out of every ten products launched, it is perhaps necessary for organisations to consider applying more structured approaches to innovation, in order to better manage risks and to increase the chances of delivering improved goods and services. A risk management approach is well suited to address the challenge of failure, as it focuses not only on the negative impact of risks but also on the opportunities they present. It aligns these with the strategic objectives of the organisation to increase the chances of its success. The research objective of this study was to establish how to embed risk management within the innovation divisions of an organisation to ensure that more efficient products and services are delivered to customers. To achieve this end, action research was conducted in a large organisation operating in a high-technology environment that launches many diverse products and services and rapidly expanding service offerings to other industries. The study took four years to complete and delivered multiple interventions that successfully embedded risk management within the organisation, leading to changed behaviours and double-loop learning. Two main knowledge contributions are offered by the study. Firstly, a generic and empirically validated integrated Innovation and Risk Management Framework (IRMF) is developed and guides new product and service development by considering both best practices and risks. Secondly, a risk dashboard is designed as a design science artefact within the action research cycles, which consolidates all the knowledge that was generated during the study. This is ultimately a visual interface to support stage-gate decision making. Since the context of the study was broad, extensive and complicated, the use of mixed-method research complemented and expanded on the findings by providing another layer of support and validation. This thesis highlights the complexity of innovation and presents the need for an organising framework that will encourage innovation but is sufficiently flexible to cater for diverse needs and risks. The study delivers several other, valuable contributions regarding what, how and why incidents occur within the real-world context of new product and service development. Several generic artefacts, such as risk processes and maturity frameworks, are also developed, which can guide risk and new product and service development practitioners to deliver more efficient product and services. This study offers several novel approaches to evaluating risks and provides practical support and recommendations, addressing shortcomings of fragmented research in similar, but smaller-scale studies that have been conducted in information systems. It is the premise of this research that a much wider number of risks need to be managed as new products and services are developed, than was noted in previous studies. Effective risk management in new product and service development could lead to competitive advantage for organisations by increasing knowledge and facilitating sustainable, informed risk decision-making.

Abstract:
The rapid rise of technology, which has become embedded in all facets of 21st century society during the past decade, has fostered a corresponding rise in its misuse. Digital citizenship abuse, a relatively new phenomenon of this electronic age, is a rapidly growing global problem. Parents, schools, and society play roles in supporting appropriate online behavior. Schools must take the lead role to assess and address digital citizenship issues. This ex post facto study investigated the online actions of students in a medium-sized K-12 school district and explored possible causal relationships between online misbehavior and student grade and gender based on data collected from state and district surveys. Kohlberg's theory of moral development, Perkins and Berkowitz's social norms theory, and Bandura's social cognitive theory provided the study's theoretical base. Hypotheses were tested using independent-measures t values, a single-factor, independent-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA), and the chi-square test for independence. With respect to the four components of online student behavior---personal safety, digital citizenship, parental involvement, and cyberbullying---analyses determined that there are significant differences between grade level and gender. As the grade level increased, personal safety risks, digital citizenship abuse, and cyberbullying increased, while parental involvement decreased. Males had significantly more personal safety and digital citizenship issues than females but no significant gender difference for parental involvement. Implications for positive social change include raising awareness of local digital citizenship issues with parents, staff, and students, and ultimately mitigating and preventing student online risky behavior.

McCarthy, Nigel Thomas Fiaschi. "The development of economic and business news on Australian television." University of Sydney, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/1773.

Full text
Abstract:
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Television is the favoured news source for most Australians and is regarded as having the potential to influence public opinion. From its inception however, television has been regarded as ill-suited to cover economic and business issues because of a perceived reliance on visual material and an inability to deal with complex issues. This tyranny of vision has been mitigated by technological developments such as electronic news gathering (ENG) and satellites that provide large amounts of varied material as well as improvements in production tools that assist the visual presentation of abstract concepts. The presentation of complex issues has also been enhanced by the increased skills and knowledge among newsworkers. Economic and business news has become a staple in television news programs and has evolved from ritualised reporting of data such as market indices and exchange rates to a genre that shares broader news values such as consequence, conflict, proximity, human interest, novelty, prominence, political controversy and scandal. Economic and business news also shares the normal imperatives of television such as a strong reliance on scheduled occasions and reliable and prolific sources. In between occasions of economic, business and political controversy or scandal, these programs are able to rely on a steady supply of economic, business and investment information. Dedicated economic and business segments and programs and now even whole channels meet two sets of demands. One is those of niche audiences seeking news and information on economic and business conditions, economic debate and policy making, the activities of economic and business leaders and an opportunity to hear and observe economic and business leaders. The other is from broadcasters seeking to maximise their profits by attracting viewers in the AB demographic (those with the greatest disposal income) to otherwise poorly-performing time slots, by broadcasters seeking an inexpensive and dependable supply of programming material and by broadcasters seeking to promote their institutional role and specific programs through presenting material that is followed up by other media. Economic and business reports however, continue to portray issues in a limited way that neglects business’s interaction with workers and the larger social environment. Economic events are often framed as political competition. These reports present a hierarchy of sources and privilege political and business elites. Television news favours debate that is presented by individuals as contrasting causal narratives. Political and economic sources have become adept at presenting brief causal narratives in response to the requirements of television. This approach highlights celebrities and favours the promotion of agency over structure. The increase in total economic and business reporting boosts the interdependence of television and political and economic sources. Technological development is continuing and traditional free-to-air television audiences are being eroded by pay television and the internet. Although these are altering the nature of political, economic and business debate their overall influence is difficult to determine.

Abstract:
In order to keep shared access computers secure and stable system administrators resort to locking down the computing environment in order to prevent intentional and unintentional damage by users. Skilled attackers are often able to break out of locked down computing environments and intentionally misuse shared access computers. This misuse has resulted in cases of mass identity theft and fraud, some of which have had an estimated cost ranging in millions. In order to determine if it is possible to break out of locked down computing environments an assessment method is required. Although a number of vulnerability assessment techniques exist, none of the existing techniques are sufficient for assessing locked down shared access computers. This is due to the existing techniques focusing on traditional, application specific, software vulnerabilities. Break out path vulnerabilities (which are exploited by attackers in order to break out of locked down environments) differ substantially from traditional vulnerabilities, and as a consequence are not easily discovered using existing techniques. Ontologies can be thought of as a modelling technique that can be used to capture expert knowledge about a domain of interest. The method for discovering break out paths in locked down computers can be considered expert knowledge in the domain of shared access computer security. This research proposes an ontology based assessment process for discovering break out path vulnerabilities in locked down shared access computers. The proposed approach is called the ontological lockdown assessment process. The ontological lockdown assessment process is implemented against a real world system and successfully identifies numerous break out path vulnerabilities.

The Internet has emerged to overcome the place of the traditional formats of information industry and communication, leading to several changes in them and the world, allowing an exchange of real-time knowledge and the development of interest groups. Thus, the present study, we will discuss the changes occurring in rural areas, emphasizing the process called "rurbanization," primarily due to the advent of the internet in family farming, which now have access to benefits previously considered privilege only of the urban . Thus, the general objective of this study was to identify how is the use and appropriation of the Internet by rural farmers Estrela/RS. It also sought to determine whether, due to this fact, changes in daily life of farmers could be observed, as well as ascertaining the processes that characterize these changes and how they are produced. Faced with these questions, we tried to find answers to questions about the influence of the Internet in everyday family farmers Estrela/RS. The use and appropriation of the Internet by the farmers in rural Estrela/RS, changed the daily lives of residents of rural communities, since the internet has provided an expansion with respect to access to communication and to obtain information, allowing increased access of populations to different materials, such as information about new products, new crops and production techniques, providing farmers with improvements in their practices and an increase in production efficiency. Moreover, the Internet allows an exchange of real-time knowledge and the development of interest groups, through alliances that serve as a tool for building different types of knowledge, experience, skills and abilities that previously were not possible or facilitated. It is believed that the Internet not only end the isolation of the field but also can generate a major change in daily life and imagination of people living there.

Abstract:
The viewing experience of news videos differ depending on if the device used is a smartphone or a traditional TV, e.g. because some social situations for smartphones not allow audio to be used while watching. Can the adding of subtitles keep the perceived quality at the same level even in these situations? This study investigates the research question how the viewing experience of news videos on smartphones is affected by subtitles and text for young adults. The results are relevant for anyone aiming to improve the viewing experience of videos on smartphones. The study is based on the theory about the concept Quality of Experience, QoE. The method has an experimental approach: 64 participants watched three news videos and after subjective and objective QoE was measured. The conclusion is that subtitles increased every aspect of subjective and objective QoE in a public context when the videos were watched without audio, while they in a home context where audio was present, did not affect any aspect of QoE, except for a decreased willingness to continue watching.

Abstract:
Users' acceptance of a new information technology (IT) is considered to be a key determinant factor of its success. Also, studying users' adoption and use of new IT plays an important role in determining users' needs and reducing business risk, especially in industry segments with rapid changes in IT such as Smartphone technology. Such rapid evolution is influencing consumers' behaviors, their daily lifestyle, the manner of conducting their activities and their ways of consuming and using information. Smartphone technology holds a promising future with an expected global market that could reach US $258 billion by the end of year 2015 [1]. Besides the mobile industry, Smartphone technology introduces a wide range of opportunities and challenges for many related industries that participate directly or indirectly in producing and providing Smartphone services/products to the end users. Moreover, the Smartphone technology is relatively new technology with plenty of room for improvement. Better understanding of users' intentions and their behaviors regarding the adoption and use of the Smartphone technology plays a critical role in determining its success and benefiting all stakeholders. Significant efforts have been made to study and explain users' adoption and use of Smartphone technology. However, most of the empirical research focused on only a limited number of Smartphone aspects or on a specific profession such as doctors and nurses which may neglect other important factors. In emerging regions such as Jordan and China, cultural and social influence showed significant relationships with users' adoption and use of the Smartphone and its related technologies. Saudi Arabia is a developing country that has different cultural and social contexts that could influence users' intention to adopt and use the Smartphone technology. The key factors that influence general users' intention to adopt and use Smartphone technology in Saudi Arabia have not yet been studied and explored in a comprehensive manner. Therefore, the main purpose of this dissertation is to empirically study and explore the key factors that influence general users' adoption and use of the Smartphone in a comprehensive manner in Saudi Arabia. This dissertation starts with a literature review of existing research related to the adoption and use of Smartphone technology. Taxonomy is developed that includes factors that were identified as important in previous research and related to the adoption and use of the Smartphone technology. By using the developed taxonomy and reviewing literature related to the IT adoption theories, a preliminary theoretical research model is developed based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). A number of qualitative methods, namely brainstorming, focus group and individual interviews, have been conducted to evaluate, select and validate the existing factors, as well as introduce new factors, and to identify only the most related factors to be included in the preliminary research model. A survey questionnaire has been developed and validated to survey general users of the Smartphone in Saudi Arabia. A web-based survey has been designed and sent through email to 5,000 randomly selected smartphones users in Saudi Arabia. Data has been statistically analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results indicate that performance expectancy factor, effort expectancy factor, brand influence factor, perceived enjoyment factor and design factor have a positive and significant relationship with users' intention to adopt and use smartphones in Saudi Arabia. Also, the results indicate that the social influence factor has a significant and positive relationship with use behavior or actual use of smartphones in Saudi Arabia. The results of this dissertation provide more insights to practitioners in the smartphones domain and information that contributes to the body of knowledge regarding information technology adoption and its related research, especially in Saudi Arabia.

Foth, Marcus. "Towards a design methodology to support social networks of residents in inner-city apartment buildings." Queensland University of Technology, 2006. http://eprints.qut.edu.au/16655/.

Full text
Abstract:
This PhD study is at the intersection of people, place and technology and pioneers innovative development approaches towards interactive social networking systems informed by community, social and urban studies and employs human-centred and participatory design methods. The project delivers a greater understanding of the potential for internet-based systems to support and facilitate social networks of urban residents and the role of those networks to foster neighbourhood identity and social capital. Departing from conventional notions that regard communities as collectives, this study builds upon more contemporary interpretations of community inherent in Castells’ and Wellman’s theories of the network society and networked individualism. The thesis challenges the view that a mere re-appropriation of applications used to support dispersed virtual communities of interest is adequate to meet the place and proximity-based design requirements that community networks in urban neighbourhoods pose. The overarching principal research aim of the study is to propose new ways of conceptualising the roles of social networks of urban residents to better inform the design of new technology facilitating urban neighbourhood developments. Addressing this aim requires a new understanding of the roles of social networks of urban residents. The study sets out to critique the implicit theories underlying technology design in this area and to propose a more appropriate theory based on recent developments in the field and empirical findings from the study. The key research questions are: 1. What theoretical model can better represent social interaction of residents in inner-city apartment buildings? 2. How can relevant research methods be adapted to take the network qualities of social interactions into account? 3. What are the implications of a new understanding of social networks for the design of technology that supports the growth of neighbourhoods? 4. What are the implications of a new understanding of social networks for an urban architecture that supports the growth of neighbourhoods? Within a framework of action research, the study follows a case study approach of three different inner-city residential apartment complexes in Brisbane. Research methods are mostly qualitative and ethnographic and include surveys, focus groups, participant observation and interviews, as well as participatory design. The study delivers innovative outcomes on three levels: 1. Theoretical innovation with an analytical translation of Wellman’s notion of networked individualism and a conceptualisation of the communicative ecology model into the context of system design that supports social networks of residents in inner-city apartment buildings; 2. Methodological innovation with the presentation of Network Action Research, an addition to the action research family which pays particular attention to the network quality of social formations in communities; 3. Empirical innovation with research findings which indicate that the key factors influencing the successful design and uptake of interactive systems to support social networks in urban neighbourhoods. They include the swarming social behaviour of urban dwellers, the dynamics of their existing communicative ecology, and the serendipitous, voluntary and place-based quality of interaction between residents on the basis of choice, like-mindedness, mutual interest and support needs. Findings are presented in three parts to audiences interested in people, technology and place. Drawing on social, urban and computer sciences, this research project delivers insights which will assist efforts to facilitate urban neighbourhood community building with new media and network ICTs. Understanding the issues and challenges as well as opportunities and strengths in forming a local meshwork of social networks will help Australians negotiate the complex web of daily choices, access a greater social safety net, and participate in the socio-cultural and socio-economic life of their city. This in turn will contribute to greater social inclusion, urban sustainability and healthier local economies.

Abstract:
New Product Development (NPD) is a knowledge intensive process, in which Information Technology (IT) could possibly play an important role to redefine the outcomes. The focus of this work is on customer-supplier collaboration in NPD, which is recognized as a major source of innovation. The main objective is to study how IT use fosters the success of such collaboration. The study of the literature gaps lead us to explore (i) the problems limiting IT effective use, (ii) the role of social capital (i.e. collective abilities stemming from connections between individuals) as an IT effective use antecedent, and (iii) the contribution of this use to collaboration success (i.e. collaboration quality and collaborative project performance). In this regard, a conceptual model, structured upon the resource-based view theory, is developed based on evidence from literature. In order to evaluate this model, a mixed methodology (qualitative and quantitative) is employed. As part of the qualitative method, case studies are carried in the form of interviews. First, exploratory studies are carried with IT managers from a small appliances company and a railway sector company, as well as with project actors from an automotive supplier. Then, in-depth case studies are carried with project actors from 3 suppliers of the aforementioned railway company. The cross-case analysis highlights some trends characterizing problems that limit IT effective use. These trends concern the problems nature (technical, related to collaboration, or at the organizational level), the type of IT functionality (PRM: project and process management, KM: knowledge management, or CW: cooperative work), and the explored perspective (customer IT managers versus supplier project actors). In addition, following a focus on supplier perspective, the role of social capital dimensions (cognitive, structural and relational) as antecedents of IT effective use is highlighted, especially for PRM and KM functionalities. Subsequently, a quantitative method is applied, by means of a survey intended for customer project actors, which are members of an NPD organization and a network of industrial engineering alumni. The collected data are analyzed by different statistical methods. On the one hand, multiple linear regressions allow to validate the direct positive effects of (i) social capital dimensions on IT effective use for PRM and KM, (ii) IT effective use for PRM, KM and CW on collaboration quality, and (iii) IT effective use for KM on collaborative project performance. On the other hand, the bootstrapping technique confirms the indirect effects of IT effective use for each functionality on collaborative project performance, through the mediation of collaboration quality. Finally, multi-group analysis is applied to underline the differences in the contribution of IT effective use, under different conditions of supplier involvement in NPD (moment of integration and design responsibility). In the light of these results, recommendations and requirements are formulated regarding IT development and use. The idea is to enable an efficient use in the context of customer-supplier collaboration, particularly through considering social capital in this use

Abstract:
The intense and rapid transformations that have marked contemporaneity directly affect a wide range of dimensions of human life to which the new information and communication technologies (ICT) are closely connected including education. Inserted in this scenario, humans find themselves increasingly at a loss for signposts to guide their way in the world. Under the influence of economic pragmatism, educational means often assume greater prominence than educational ends. In this context, several guiding principles emerge for education, not all of them able to imbue the work of teaching and the process of student education with meaning. The main objective of this research is to reflect on the meanings teachers ascribe to technology and on a possible critical incorporation of technological resources into their teaching practices. To this end, an investigation was made of the conceptions the subjects of this research possessed about education, technology and their relations in the contemporary world, particularly insofar as they concern educational ends and the practice of teaching. The work of Hannah Arendt was used as the main theoretical reference to analyze the information, with special attention focusing on the concept of meaning and on the distinctions the author establishes between knowledge, truth and meaning. A qualitative methodology was used, and the information was collected by means of semi-structured interviews. The subjects of this research are Physics teachers who use technological tools in their teaching activities inside and outside the classroom, and teach at a medium-sized private school located in Osasco, SP, Brazil. This school, which caters to children of preschool to middle school age and also gives university entry exam preparation courses , sees technology as one of the main structuring components of its pedagogical policy project, offering a wide range of technological resources to students and teachers (electronic blackboards, a teleconference system, an auditorium equipped with a stereoscopic 3D film projector, online service for clarifying students doubts, and informatics and robotics laboratories). An analysis of the interviews indicated that the justifications for the use of ICT are not generally characterized as being the fruit of critical thought, but a response to the pressures of economic pragmatism the valuing of processual action; an attempt to mold the pace of the teaching-learning process to market dynamics; educational purposes aimed, almost exclusively, to preparing students for the labor market. In addition to the absence of a reflexive control of time and a certain disdain for questions of a philosophical nature, the answers recorded in these interviews indicated that the paucity of evidence of speculative thinking suggests that, with the subjects of this research, there has been no development of the process of attributing meaning, in light of the concepts defined by Arendt, specifically insofar as the incorporation of technological resources into their teaching practices is concerned.

Abstract:
The subject of this thesis is VJing, a term referring to the work performed by the VJ (Video or Visual Jockey) consisting of creating and manipulating several visual sources in real-time through technological mediation and for an audience, in synchronization to music. This study intends to put this practice in perspective by considering it as a specific work made over the image, questioning its poietic paradigm based on synaesthesia as well as the performative context in which it takes place. Borrowing the concept of Remediation from Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin, we study the various processes by which VJing re-appropriates, both in form and content, some constitutive properties of DJing and electronic music, as it also extends directly or indirectly some processes of union of the visual and the aural as it has been experimented in cinema and video. Based on a corpus of about a hundred of VJ works (performance extracts, mixes made for video distribution), our methodological approach consists of conducting several comparative analysis with different works taken from avant-garde cinema, experimental cinema, video art and music videos, in order to progressively defining the specific identity of VJing. By combining theoretical, historical and aesthetic perspectives, we analyze the means by which this practice has established a technological and projective device over time to achieve producing audio-visual objects in real-time based on the constant dialogue between moving pictures and music (or soundtrack) and we try to see how this kind of performance, taking place in the context of new media, mainstreamed remix and "expanded cinema", echoes with the avant-garde tradition and the pictorial, musical as well as cinematic legacy of Visual Music

Abstract:
This study examined efficiency of the Safeer by gathering and analyzing the perception of 131 Saudi students from Bowling Green, KY. The purpose of the study was to ensure that the system is able to perform its function as the bridge between different institutions and Saudi students studying in the US who require assistance in processing their academic requirements. A self-administered survey using five scale points was employed. Results were summarized using descriptive statistics at 95% confidence level. The result confirmed the hypothesis that the use of the Safeer program provides quality service delivery within SACM, which in turn benefits Saudi’s students in the USA by making and facilitating their requests faster. Findings show that students found the Safeer software interface easy to use. The overall impact of Safeer to SACM in serving the student community from Saudi Arabia is generally positive. It made SACM more responsive, convenient, and accessible. However, some students demonstrated concerns about the loading speed, security of personal data, and other issues. Safeer not only made SACM’s services more accessible to students, it also provided a more current and technologically relevant option for the users and contributed to the organization’s goal of bridging culture, geography and technology while providing quality service to Saudi Students from all over the US.

Abstract:
The master thesis deals with a new phenomenon in the world of diplomacy: digital diplomacy. The main objective of this work is to determine whether the digital diplomacy is able to improve the relationship between the American and Islamic civilization. To fulfill this goal, the case study of Digital Outreach Team, of a team of specialists who search the internet and communicate with Muslims with negative attitude towards US, was used. The work is divided into three chapters. The first chapter provides a theoretical introduction to digital diplomacy. The second chapter is devoted to the use of digital diplomacy in the Unied States: a world leader in information and communication technologies, with an emphasis on digitization of activities of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In the third chapter we find the analysis of the digital activities of the team and assessment of the digital diplomacy on Arab soil.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This dissertation expands upon the definition of eco-visualization artwork. EV was originally defined in 2006 by Tiffany Holmes as a way to display the real time consumption statistics of key environmental resources for the goal of promoting ecological literacy. I assert that the final forms of EV artworks are not necessarily dependent on technology, and can differ in terms of media used, in that they can be sculptural, video-based, or static two-dimensional forms that communicate interpreted environmental information. There are two main categories of EV: one that is predominantly screen-based and another that employs a variety of modes of representation to visualize environmental information. EVs are political acts, situated in a charged climate of rising awareness, operating within the context of environmentalism and sustainability. I discuss a variety of EV works within the frame of ecopsychology, including EcoArtTech’s Eclipse and Keith Deverell’s Building Run; Andrea Polli’s Cloud Car and Particle Falls; Nathalie Miebach’s series, The Sandy Rides; and Natalie Jeremijenko’s Mussel Choir. The range of EV works provided models for my creative project, Sculpting Corn Production, and a foundation from which I developed a creative methodology. Working to defeat my experience of solastalgia, Sculpting Corn Production is a series of discrete paper sculptures focusing on American industrial corn farming. This EV also functions as a way for me to understand our devastated monoculture landscapes and the politics, economics, and related areas of ecology of our food production.

Abstract:
Following the rise of social media, the world has found itself in a hyperconnected state. Through the press of a button, it is today possible to reach every corner of the world. This has brought opportunities for freedom and liberation, but in the past years it has also become a danger for these ideas. The rise of disinformation has been declared a major threat to democracy and our society by several major institutions, one of them being the European Union. They have also made it clear that the tech companies, through whose products disinformation primarily spreads, not only inadequately prevent it, but also question if they have enough incentive to do so. The executive branch of the EU, the European Commission, has therefore put forth an action plan in which they outline their work going forward in mitigating the crisis. Comparing with previous research on the vital parts of disinformation, there are heavy indications that the EU’s work will focus on reactionary measures; discovery and sharing of data on ongoing disinformation campaigns between neighbouring and Member States, as well as societal media literacy efforts. For now, due to what seems to be a fear of over-regulating freedom of expression, the responsibility to battle creation and spread is left to the Code of Practice on Disinformation, a plan created by tech companies that hold the platforms that are center in the spread of disinformation. After a first yearassessment, the EU indicates that the results of this Code of Practice is unsatisfactory, and further action might be needed.
