Abstract:
The origin story of the 1st Battalion, 114th Infantry has been lost over time. Whether through poor record keeping or due to the turbulence of the Civil War, the unit, formerly known as the Third New Jersey, is unable to trace its lineage before 1860. It is believed, however, that the battalion, currently stationed in Woodbury, New Jersey, has roots in the Revolutionary War-era New Jersey Militia as well as an auxiliary organization formed by the state during the Civil War, the New Jersey Rifle Corps. The purpose of this paper is to document and substantiate the history of the 1st Battalion, 1

Conflicts of interest (COI) are an integral part of human society, including their influence on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climate change. Individuals or entities often have multiple interests ranging from financial benefits to reducing climate change-related risks, where choosing one interest may negatively impact other interests and societal welfare. These types of COI require specific management strategies. This study examines COI from land-use decisions as an intersection of different perspectives on land use (e.g., land conservation versus land development), which can have various

The architect John Sidney Swan (1874-1936) represents a little represented group in the history of New Zealand architecture. At the establishment of the New Zealand Institute of Architects in 1905, Swan was one of few architects present, along with William Gray Young (1895-1962), who had been trained in New Zealand through the article system. While training "on the job" was a common occurrence in the early development of the building industry in this country, few of these architects achieved great renown. Abstract Observations off the New Jersey coast document the shoaling of three groups of nonlinear internal waves of depression over 35 km across the shelf. Each wave group experienced changing background conditions along its shoreward transit. Despite different wave environments, a clear pattern emerges. Nearly symmetric waves propagating into shallow water develop an asymmetric shape; in the wave reference frame, the leading edge accelerates causing the front face to broaden while the trailing face remains steep. This trend continues until the front edge and face of the leading depression wav

Puccini’s Madama Butterfly (1904) was a notorious failure at its world premiere: condemned by Italian critics for its “decorative” surfaces and apparent repetition of earlier Puccinian tropes. The first of the composer’s two operas based on works by American playwright David Belasco, the opera was soon revised and received its belated New York Metropolitan Opera premiere in 1907 as part of a festival of the composer’s works organized in his presence. The decision to visit New York was timely: not only had Belasco’s source play been premiered there in 1900, but New York was by then emerging as

In addition to the presence of dead and dry fuels due to a late spring frost prior to the wildfire, the meteorological conditions at the time of the wildfire were conducive to erratic fire behaviour and rapid fire growth.
