Abstract:
The advent of ultra–high-throughput sequencing has led to the discovery of a large group of small, noncoding RNAs that are not microRNAs. The functional relevance of microRNAs has been well established over the last decade. In this Perspective, we focus on the non-micro-short RNAs that comprise a variety of functional classes and range from 16–40 nucleotides in size. We will highlight how some of these non-micro-short RNAs were discovered, as well as their biogenesis, potential mechanisms of action, and role in diverse biological processes, development, and disease. Finally, we will describe what must be done to further our understanding of these enigmatic molecules.

Abstract:
Sarcopenia, which is a decrease in muscle strength and quality of muscle tissue, is a common disorder among patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease. This particular group of patients often presents with malnutrition and shows low physical activity, which increases the risk of sarcopenia. Another important factor in the development of sarcopenia is an imbalanced ratio of myostatin and follistatin, which may stem from inflammation as well as genetic factors. Currently, research in this area continues, and is aimed at identifying an effective medication for the treatment of this condition. Additionally, we still have no sarcopenia markers that can be used for diagnosis. In this paper, we address the role of myostatin and follistatin as potential markers in the diagnosis of sarcopenia in patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, particularly in view of the genetic and biological aspects. We also present data on new perspectives in the pharmacotherapy of sarcopenia (i.e., myostatin inhibitors and gene therapy). Nevertheless, knowledge is still scarce about the roles of follistatin and myostatin in sarcopenia development among patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease, which warrants further study.

Abstract:
Abstract Early detection and diagnosis of cancer followed by a personalised approach to treatment is a key and can save lives. It has been an important issue in both the medical and social fields. The search for instruments and/or diagnostics tools able to detect cancers at an early stage has led to consideration of the usage of various approaches, such as exhaled air, biomarkers in blood, urine testing as well as imaging techniques. This actual time and everything that is happening around us could be characterised as a strange and very unpredictable time. This comparison could be made not only due to the actual coronavirus situation, but also the same can be noticed in the personalised medicine of the second decade of 21st century — by means of check point inhibitors. The old dogmas, for instance, chemotherapy and metastasis-surgery are being appended with new diagnostic and therapy use of checkpoint inhibitors. What exactly is the checkpoint blockade and how it is working in three tumour modalities: bladder cancer, prostate cancer and renal cancer. Our study group will provide a brief and detailed, guideline-compliant outline. The aim of this review was to provide a summary of the current state of the art of immune therapy as potential treatment of prostate, urinary bladder, and kidney cancer.

Abstract:
Background: Although there are several valid and reliable dietary screeners to measure child intake patterns, there is a paucity of brief assessment tools targeting under- and overconsumed foods. Objective: To compare the Fueling Learning through Exercise study (FLEX) dietary questionnaire, a screener designed to assess consumption patterns in third to fifth graders, to a validated dietary assessment tool. Methods: The FLEX dietary questionnaire was developed to assess fruit, vegetable, snack, and beverage consumption and was compared to the Block Kids Food Screener (BKFS). Correlations were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient. Agreement was assessed using Bland-Altman plots. Results: The sample (n = 63) had mean age of 9.9 years (SD 0.7). Most participants were non-Hispanic white (70%) and eligible for free/reduced price lunch (57%). Correlations between food group categories were significant for all groups ( P < .05) except fruits ( r = 0.51) and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) ( r = 0.21). We found moderate-to-strong correlations between reported vegetable, salty snack, sweet snack, total beverage, milk, and fruit juice consumption (0.62, 0.59, 0.69, 0.47, 0.48, and 0.46, respectively). The FLEX screener reported systematically higher mean servings per day (0.24-1.1) compared to the BKFS (0.05-0.51). Conclusion: Based on these correlations, the FLEX dietary questionnaire performs similarly to a validated tool in assessing intake of under- and overconsumed food groups in a diverse third to fifth grade population. Overall serving size discrepancies are likely due to more relevant food items on the FLEX questionnaire and a more child-friendly format. This study highlights the need to update older diet screeners to reflect current child consumption patterns.

Abstract:
Abstract One of the most contentious issues of the “Identification of Customary International Law”, a topic the International Law Commission has recently finalized its work on, concerns the extent to which international organizations (IOs) play a part in the creation of customary norms. Conclusion 4(2) of the 2018 draft provides that “[i]n certain cases, the practice of international organizations also contributes to the formation, or expression, of rules of customary international law.” The official commentary recognizes two such cases: i) when States “have transferred exclusive competences to the [IOs]”, and ii) when States “have conferred competences upon the [IOs] that are functionally equivalent to powers exercised by States.” After questioning the utility of the Commission’s approach, this contribution outlines an alternative analytical framework for IOs’ participation in the creation of customary rules grounded in the principle of speciality and premised on the ratione personae applicability of the rule to be identified.

Novack, Jennifer Leigh. "New kids on the European block : Finnish and Swedish adaptation to the European Union?" Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2002. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/2112/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines Finnish and Swedish membership in the European Union since the two Nordic countries joined (along with Austria) in January 1995 to become "new kids on the European block." The author compares the strategies that national decision-makers have pursued in EU policy-making to assess the nature and extent of their adaptation to the European Union. This analysis relies on case studies of three policy areas: 1) Economic and Monetary Union (with a focus on the decision on whether or not to adopt the Euro in the first wave); 2) relations with non-EU neighbours in Northern Europe (with particular attention given to EU enlargement and the Northern Dimension Initiative); and 3) public access to documents. Although the thesis concentrates primarily on empirical analysis, it also provides a theoretical critique. The author argues that differences in the historical backgrounds, institutions, cultures, and identities of Finland and Sweden have led to differences in their approaches to the EU. The thesis presents a challenge to existing theoretical frameworks that leave little or no room for the four factors that are emphasised here, with particular attention given to the approaches of Andrew Moravcsik (1998) and Christine Ingebritsen (1998).

Abstract:
Background: The interest for the first cryptocurrency in the world made the world caught the attention of the technology behind Bitcoin: Blockchain. Blockchain can be described as a decentralized database with no central part controlling its network. Instead, all transactions are registered and verified by the members of the network. This enables digital information to be distributed but not copied in a trustworthy way. The technology therefore has the possibility to create trust between parties that normally does not trust each other and is for that reason considered to have the potential to make many industries, including the banking industry more effective. Amongst a number of financial players that investigate the possible opportunities the technology have for improving their products and services, the optimism is high. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to research which potential fields of application Swedish banks sees for Blockchain and how the technology could be used by the banking industry. The study also intend to analyze the effects the usage of the technology would have on transactions within the Swedish banking industry. Completion: A qualitative research method characterize the study. The empirical data has been collected through a selected sample focused on individuals with knowledge and experience within the field. Conclusion: The study identifies KYC, Smart Contracts and Transactions as potential fields of application for the Swedish banking industry. In particular, KYC was highlighted as an area where the Blockchain technology could help improve managing the personal information of the customer. The study also points out trade finance and interbank-transactions as attractive areas of possible use for the technology. Furthermore, the result of the study shows that the technology should not be seen as a threat against banks role as an intermediary but a technology that enables the banks services to become more efficient. The technology is to be seen as an Emerging technology with high uncertainty today and where the potential impact lays in the future. The biggest threats against an implementation of the technology are that the technology still is in an experimental phase and the shortage of common standards and rules between banks and across countries.

Abstract:
Breakaway oxidation is a potential fuel failure mechanism during a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA), especially small-break LOCA. Two kinds of new advanced zirconium alloy, CZ1 and CZ2, were developed by China Nuclear Power Research and Technology Institute of China General Nuclear Power Group. The breakaway oxidation behavior of CZ1 and CZ2 was studied. The outer surface of all samples was examined visually and photographed. After 2730s oxidation in steam, the outer surface of CZ1 alloy sample and CZ2 alloy sample remained lustrous-black. The outer surface of CZ1 sample oxidized in steam at 1000 °C for 4181s was grey, but under the same experimental conditions the outer surface of CZ2 sample was still lustrous black. The hydrogen pickup content of different oxidation time was measured. The samples with grey appearance showed significant hydrogen pickup. The microstructure was observed by optical microscope. Evolution of oxide structure was described, and the mechanism was discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
The CANDLE burnup strategy is a new reactor burnup concept, where the distributions of fuel nuclide densities, neutron flux, and power density move with the same constant speed along the core axis from bottom to top or from top to bottom of the core and without any change in their shapes. It can be applied easily to the block-type high temperature gas cooled reactor using an appropriate burnable poison mixed with uranium oxide fuel. In the present study, the burnup distribution and the temperature distribution in the core are investigated and their effects on the CANDLE burnup core characteristics are studied. In this study, the natural gadolinium is used as the burnable poison. With the fuel enrichment of 15%, the natural gadolinium concentration of 3.0% and the fuel pin pitch of 6.6cm, the CANDLE burnup is realized with the burning region moving speed of 29 cm/year and the axial half width of power density distribution of 1.5m for uniform group constant case at 900K. When the effect of nuclide change by burnup is considered, the burning region speed becomes 25cm/year and the axial half-width of power density distribution becomes 1.25m. When the temperature distributions effect is considered, the effects on the core characteristics are smaller than the burnup distribution effect. The maximum fuel temperature of the parallel flow case is higher than the counter flow case.

Abstract:
Many methods have been developed to obtain the band structure of crystals. Generally, they all require numerical computation to construct the spectrum. Therefore, only discrete points instead of continuous lines provided for dispersion relations. This makes it difficult to distinguish the modes of nearby discrete points without calculating mode profiles. That is, more effort is required to determine whether two dispersion curves intersect each other or not. A new method of investigation for phononic crystals is proposed which takes advantage of finite group theory and symmetrized plane waves that can block-diagonalize secular equations. A system consisting of a periodic square array of nickel alloy cylinders and an aluminum alloy matrix is studied. Intersections between dispersion curves of different modes can be identified directly. The result contradicts that presented by Kushwaha in 1993. The method can not only distinguish different modes directly from the computed band structure but also saves computation time. Compared to plane wave expansion method, only one quarter of computation time is required for calculating the spectrum. The higher symmetry a group has, the shorter the computation time expected.

Abstract:
The Vehicle Dynamics Group (VDG) at the University of Pretoria has developed a semi-active hydro-pneumatic suspension system for an off road vehicle. The suspension system can switch its characteristics between two discrete spring characteristics as well as two discrete damping characteristics all incorporated in a single suspension strut. This original 4-State Semi-active Suspension System (or 4S4), switches between discrete characteristics through the control a set of solenoid valves. Recently, the 4S4 was further developed with the aim of extending its damping characteristics to be continuously variable through the use of Magneto-rheological (MR) technology. The newly developed MR4S4 prototype received a re-designed flow path which channels the MR suspension fluid through two independent magnetic valves (flow orifice enclosed by coils) in parallel. The damping characteristics of each of the valves are controlled independently by the application of electric currents through damper coils. These valves are also able to block flow completely to achieve the discrete spring characteristics through switching flow to the independent accumulators. However, in order to ensure that this new technology could be effectively applied and controlled a model of the MR4S4 needed to be developed. This paper describes the development and validation of a physics based model which is able to capture the overall dynamics and properties of the MR4S4 suspension system. Importantly, the aim of the research was to appropriately capture the physical properties of both the gas as well as the MR fluid as it interacts with the suspension displacements and forces. This model would aid further research in the development of control strategies and provide insight through simulation studies on the systems’ influence on vehicle dynamics.

Abstract:
In the last decade, opportunities have emerged to deploy new digital technologies to research agendas and research-led teaching at third level. For instance, research methods such as surveys and questionnaires are shifting into the digital environment, while at the same time there is increasing evidence to support the view that people who have grown up with technology have acquired distinctive new ways of learning, and that traditional methodologies fail to maximise student engagement (Lafuente 2018). Thompson (2013) suggests that these ‘new learners’ are constantly using technology, multi-tasking in interactive environments, and collaborating online, yet research shows that many students are unaware of the potential of their smartphone to support learning (Woodcock et al, 2012). Despite a widespread interest in mobile devices facilitating teaching and learning in third-level education geography departments (Welsh et al. 2013), many research techniques are still taught using traditional ‘pen-and-paper’ methodologies. The ESRI Collector for ArcGIS is a mobile application (app) that can be used with iOS, Android, and Windows smartphones. Collector for ArcGIS is beginning to emerge as a technology to support spatial thinking in geography at second-level education and third-level education (Pánek and Glass 2018). Here we report on our strategy of integrating mobile technology in GG1015 Applied Geography, a large (250+) class introducing first year BA Arts Geography programme students to a number of techniques that we use in Geography. This module sits between GG1013 Environmental Geography and GG1014 Society and Space in the first-year programme. Both of these modules are a block of 24 1-hour lectures, with multiple choice quizzes (MCQs) and essay-based exams. Subsequently, GG1015 was developed to compliment these modules and introduce different teaching styles that facilitate learning across a range of diversities. Throughout this module, students engage directly in fieldwork, photographic activities, essay writing, presentations, and small group work. As such, this module offers an excellent case study to explore new techniques to engage students in learning, particularly in geographic research.
