Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to assess the effects of explicit partner brand mentions (as opposed to a mere partnership mention) in communications by brand allies on consumers’ purchase intention and willingness to pay for an innovation, as mediated by the perceived relational embeddedness of the allies and their respective perceived corporate credibility. In Study 1, the authors investigate the effects of (reciprocal) explicit brand mentions by both allies (as opposed to by a single ally) and further test whether explicit brand mentions moderate spillover effects from the ally. In Study 2, the authors investigate the effect of reciprocity of explicit brand mentions and whether this is moderated by a company’s experience. Design/methodology/approach The authors conduct two online experiments. Study 1 (N = 216) is a four-level between-subjects experiment (single communication by Partner A with explicit brand mention, single communication by Partner B with explicit brand mention, explicit brand mentions by both allies and mere partnership mention by both allies) where participants judge a social alliance related to a new tablet. Study 2 (N = 376) builds upon these findings in a 4 (explicit brand mentions by both allies; mere partnership mention by both allies; explicit brand mention by Partner A, mere partnership mention by Partner B; explicit brand mention by partner B, mere partnership mention by Partner A) × 2 (Partner A experience: established vs startup) between-subjects experimental design for a co-created battery. Findings Spillover effects from one ally to the other are stronger with explicit brand mentions than with a mere partnership mention. There is no added value of two allies communicating over one, provided that both partners explicitly mention their partner brand. However, when allies do communicate separately, it is crucial that an explicit brand mention is reciprocated. This effect is explained by an increase in the perceived relational embeddedness of the partners, which in turn positively influences their corporate credibility. This effect does not differ depending on a company’s experience. Originality/value This research is one of the first to study effects of how a brand alliance is communicated and extends previous studies on the effects of communication about brand and co-creation alliances by demonstrating that communications moderate spillover effects, that brand mention reciprocity is crucial, and by introducing the concept of perceived relational embeddedness.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThis article investigates the lengths of time that publications with different numbers of policy document mentions take to receive their first mention (the beginning stage), and then compares the lengths of time to receive two or more mentions after receiving the first mention (the accumulative stage) based on complete policy document dataset from Altmetric database. We find that in response time distribution, i.e., from zero to one policy document mention, highly and mediumly mentioned papers exhibit obviously different lengths of time compared with lowly mentioned papers. In accumulative time distribution, i.e., from one to N policy document mentions, highly mentioned papers begin to receive mentions much more rapidly than medium‐ and low‐mentioned papers. However, as N increases, the difference in receiving new mentions among high‐, medium‐, and low‐mentioned publications does not increase quite significantly.

Abstract:
Methods for Named Entity Recognition and Disambiguation (NERD) perform NER and NED in two separate stages. Therefore, NED may be penalized with respect to precision by NER false positives, and suffers in recall from NER false negatives. Conversely, NED does not fully exploit information computed by NER such as types of mentions. This paper presents J-NERD, a new approach to perform NER and NED jointly, by means of a probabilistic graphical model that captures mention spans, mention types, and the mapping of mentions to entities in a knowledge base. We present experiments with different kinds of texts from the CoNLL’03, ACE’05, and ClueWeb’09-FACC1 corpora. J-NERD consistently outperforms state-of-the-art competitors in end-to-end NERD precision, recall, and F1.

Abstract:
Political elites play an important role in the proliferation of online misinformation. However, an understanding of how fact-checking platforms pick up politicized misinformation for fact-checking is still in its infancy. Here, we conduct an empirical analysis of mentions of U.S. political elites within fact-checked statements. For this purpose, we collect a comprehensive dataset consisting of 35,014 true and false statements that have been fact-checked by two major fact-checking organizations (Snopes, PolitiFact) in the U.S. between 2008 and 2023, i.e., within an observation period of 15 years. Subsequently, we perform content analysis and explanatory regression modeling to analyze how veracity is linked to mentions of U.S. political elites in fact-checked statements. Our analysis yields the following main findings: (i) Fact-checked false statements are, on average, 20% more likely to mention political elites than true fact-checked statements. (ii) There is a partisan asymmetry such that fact-checked false statements are 88.1% more likely to mention Democrats, but 26.5% less likely to mention Republicans, compared to fact-checked true statements. (iii) Mentions of political elites in fact-checked false statements reach the highest level during the months preceding elections. (iv) Fact-checked false statements that mention political elites carry stronger other-condemning emotions and are more likely to be pro-Republican, compared to fact-checked true statements. In sum, our study offers new insights into understanding mentions of political elites in false statements on U.S. fact-checking platforms, and bridges important findings at the intersection between misinformation and politicization.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract We present mGENRE, a sequence-to- sequence system for the Multilingual Entity Linking (MEL) problem—the task of resolving language-specific mentions to a multilingual Knowledge Base (KB). For a mention in a given language, mGENRE predicts the name of the target entity left-to-right, token-by-token in an autoregressive fashion. The autoregressive formulation allows us to effectively cross-encode mention string and entity names to capture more interactions than the standard dot product between mention and entity vectors. It also enables fast search within a large KB even for mentions that do not appear in mention tables and with no need for large-scale vector indices. While prior MEL works use a single representation for each entity, we match against entity names of as many languages as possible, which allows exploiting language connections between source input and target name. Moreover, in a zero-shot setting on languages with no training data at all, mGENRE treats the target language as a latent variable that is marginalized at prediction time. This leads to over 50% improvements in average accuracy. We show the efficacy of our approach through extensive evaluation including experiments on three popular MEL benchmarks where we establish new state-of-the-art results. Full text
Abstract:
The task of event coreference resolution plays a critical role in many natural language processing applications such as information extraction, question answering, and topic detection and tracking. In this article, we describe a new class of unsupervised, nonparametric Bayesian models with the purpose of probabilistically inferring coreference clusters of event mentions from a collection of unlabeled documents. In order to infer these clusters, we automatically extract various lexical, syntactic, and semantic features for each event mention from the document collection. Extracting a rich set of features for each event mention allows us to cast event coreference resolution as the task of grouping together the mentions that share the same features (they have the same participating entities, share the same location, happen at the same time, etc.). Some of the most important challenges posed by the resolution of event coreference in an unsupervised way stem from (a) the choice of representing event mentions through a rich set of features and (b) the ability of modeling events described both within the same document and across multiple documents. Our first unsupervised model that addresses these challenges is a generalization of the hierarchical Dirichlet process. This new extension presents the hierarchical Dirichlet process's ability to capture the uncertainty regarding the number of clustering components and, additionally, takes into account any finite number of features associated with each event mention. Furthermore, to overcome some of the limitations of this extension, we devised a new hybrid model, which combines an infinite latent class model with a discrete time series model. The main advantage of this hybrid model stands in its capability to automatically infer the number of features associated with each event mention from data and, at the same time, to perform an automatic selection of the most informative features for the task of event coreference. The evaluation performed for solving both within- and cross-document event coreference shows significant improvements of these models when compared against two baselines for this task.

Abstract:
Document-level relation extraction aims to extract entity relations that span across multiple sentences. This task faces two critical issues: long dependency and mention selection. Prior works address the above problems from the textual perspective, however, it is hard to handle these problems solely based on text information. In this paper, we leverage video information to provide additional evidence for understanding long dependencies and offer a wider perspective for identifying relevant mentions, thus giving rise to a new task named Multimodal Document-level Relation Extraction (MDocRE). To tackle this new task, we construct a human-annotated dataset including documents and relevant videos, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the first document-level relation extraction dataset equipped with video clips. We also propose a hierarchical framework to learn interactions between different dependency levels and a textual-guided transformer architecture that incorporates both textual and video modalities. In addition, we utilize a mention gate module to address the mention-selection problem in both modalities. Experiments on our proposed dataset show that 1) incorporating video information greatly improves model performance; 2) our hierarchical framework has state-of-the-art results compared with both unimodal and multimodal baselines; 3) through collaborating with video information, our model better solves the long-dependency and mention-selection problems.

Abstract:
This qualitative study explored the experiences of professional women in transition to retirement in New Zealand. Six women aged between 58 and 68 years took part in two one-hour, one-on-one interviews during which they described a succession of transitions they had undertaken, where they success - fully integrated professional, personal, and domestic domains, and carried skills and experience over into new stages of their lives. This experience of successfully managing significant transitions gave the women confidence that they might anticipate periods of exploration in retirement, where resumption of a career might be contemplated, where greater family engagement might prove reward - ing, where further academic and creative endeavours might be possible, and where community and networks might present opportunities for new directions. As they looked ahead, they were anticipating continuity and change: continuity in the way they would exercise control and have choices, and change in the ways in which they would meet new challenges. Abstract:
Background Much effort has been put into the use of automated approaches, such as natural language processing (NLP), to mine or extract data from free-text medical records in order to construct comprehensive patient profiles for delivering better health care. Reusing NLP models in new settings, however, remains cumbersome, as it requires validation and retraining on new data iteratively to achieve convergent results. Objective The aim of this work is to minimize the effort involved in reusing NLP models on free-text medical records. Methods We formally define and analyze the model adaptation problem in phenotype-mention identification tasks. We identify “duplicate waste” and “imbalance waste,” which collectively impede efficient model reuse. We propose a phenotype embedding–based approach to minimize these sources of waste without the need for labelled data from new settings. Results We conduct experiments on data from a large mental health registry to reuse NLP models in four phenotype-mention identification tasks. The proposed approach can choose the best model for a new task, identifying up to 76% waste (duplicate waste), that is, phenotype mentions without the need for validation and model retraining and with very good performance (93%-97% accuracy). It can also provide guidance for validating and retraining the selected model for novel language patterns in new tasks, saving around 80% waste (imbalance waste), that is, the effort required in “blind” model-adaptation approaches. Conclusions Adapting pretrained NLP models for new tasks can be more efficient and effective if the language pattern landscapes of old settings and new settings can be made explicit and comparable. Our experiments show that the phenotype-mention embedding approach is an effective way to model language patterns for phenotype-mention identification tasks and that its use can guide efficient NLP model reuse.

Abstract:
Novice teachers need support as they enter their career in education. Supports can be given through various forms including mentoring and instructional coaching. The supports are put into place by school districts to assist with student achievement as well as teacher retention. This case study examines a school districts elementary schools and the supports put into place for novice teachers, with a particular focus on mentoring and instructional coaching. The case study drew from interviews, observations, and document reviews from four different elementary schools and eight individuals, including novice teachers, mentors, and instructional coaches. Coding took place and a thematic analysis took place. Triangulation of all three data points kept this qualitative study reliable and accurate. The three findings include: 1) Perceptions of mentoring and instructional coaching program components, 2) Novice teachers perceptions of mentoring and instructional coaching support, and 3) Mentors and instructional coaches perceptions of their roles in supporting novice teachers. The findings focus on recognizing the perceptions of those involved in induction programs for novice teachers and how those supports provide the necessary needs for new teachers to stay in the field of education. Specifically, perceptions were identified to indicate if one program served a better purpose for what novice teachers want and need to be successful. The purpose of the research was to understand how novice teachers perceive types of support and how the supports effect their retention and performance. The results of the study would assist a school system in terms of where to invest funds to provide the most needed support for novice teachers.
Ed. D.

Abstract:
Civil unrest (protests, strikes, and ``occupy'' events) is a common occurrence in both democracies and authoritarian regimes. The study of civil unrest is a key topic for political scientists as it helps capture an important mechanism by which citizenry express themselves. In countries where civil unrest is lawful, qualitative analysis has revealed that more than 75% of the protests are planned, organized, and/or announced in advance; therefore detecting future time mentions in relevant news and social media is a simple way to develop a protest forecasting system. We develop such a system in this thesis, using a combination of key phrase learning to identify what to look for, probabilistic soft logic to reason about location occurrences in extracted results, and time normalization to resolve future tense mentions. We illustrate the application of our system to 10 countries in Latin America, viz. Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Results demonstrate our successes in capturing significant societal unrest in these countries with an average lead time of 4.08 days. We also study the selective superiorities of news media versus social media (Twitter, Facebook) to identify relevant tradeoffs.
Master of Science

The aim of the study was to analyze mentor‘s role in new employee socialization. 373 newcomers and 56 mentors took part in the study. Newcomers filled the questionnaires evaluating their socialization (amount of different information, job related state anxiety, feeling of insider, perceived professional competency, evaluation of job and organization), characteristics of new employee (age, highest educational level attained, work experience, current position) and nearest surroundings (leadership style, leader-member exchange (LMX) quality, work group climate, group size and presence of mentorship programs). Mentors had to fill the questionnaires measuring organizational commitment, job satisfaction, work motivation, mentoring experience and professional, social and andragogical competencies. The results show that LMX, work group climate, group size and mentorship programs are the factors allowing to differentiate newcomers by the level of their socialization (high or low). The organizational socialization of employees who had and who had no mentors is very similar. Yet if employees had no mentors, the responsibility and workload sharing the information felt on their direct executives. High quality LMX, directive leadership style and friendly work group climate accelerate new employee socialization and these factors are significally more important when new employees have no mentors. Abstract:

Educators at a public high school in Southeastern United States depend on mentor teachers to minimize the attrition rate among beginning teachers, yet the strategies implemented by mentors lack definition and clarity. The purpose of this study was to explore mentor teachers’ perceptions of effective mentoring strategies and their needs when mentoring new teachers. Maslow’s humanistic learning theory guided this bounded basic qualitative study. The research questions focused on the mentoring strategies mentor teachers perceived as effective and the needs of the mentors. Ten high school mentor teachers, who currently mentor new teachers, were purposefully selected to participate in individual and focus group interviews. Precoding, open and axial coding were used to inductively analyze the data. The results showed mentors promote school culture, are a source of information, build relationships, use data to drive discussion, provide opportunity for reflection, conduct observations, connect theory with practice, and model professional behavior as effective strategies. Mentor teachers indicated that effective communication is crucial when mentoring new teachers. Additionally, they need specific skills to help beginning teachers better understand the reality of teaching and address their unrealistic expectations of the profession. Based on the findings a 3-day professional development for mentor teachers was developed to address mentors’ needs. This endeavor may contribute to positive social change when district administration provides mentor teachers with professional development to enrich their mentoring strategies which in turn may address the challenges new teachers experience and reduce the attrition rate.

Abstract:
This book offers nine new approaches toward a single work of art, Titian’s Allegory of Marriage or Allegory of Alfonso d’Avalos, dated to 1530/5. In earlier references, the painting was named simply Allegory, alluding to its enigmatic nature. The work follows in a tradition of such ambiguous Venetian paintings as Giovanni Bellini’s Sacred Allegory and Giorgione’s Tempest. Throughout the years, Titian’s Allegory has engendered a range of diverse interpretations. Art historians such as Hans Tietze, Erwin Panofsky, Walter Friedlaender, and Louis Hourticq, to mention only a few, promoted various explanations. This book offers novel approaches and suggests new meanings toward a further understanding of this somewhat abstruse painting.

Abstract:
AbstractSoftware has emerged as a crucial tool in the current research ecosystem, frequently referenced in academic papers for its application in studies or the introduction of new software systems. Despite its prevalence, there remains a significant gap in understanding how software is cited within the scientific literature. In this study, we offer a conceptual framework for studying software citation intent and explore the use of large language models, such as BERT-based models, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4 for this task. We compile a representative software-mention dataset by merging two existing gold standard software mentions datasets and annotating them to a common citation intent scheme. This new dataset makes it possible to analyze software citation intent at the sentence level. We observe that in a fine-tuning setting, large language models can generally achieve an accuracy of over 80% on software citation intent classification on unseen, challenging data. Our research paves the way for future empirical investigations into the realm of research software, establishing a foundational framework for exploring this under-examined area.

We have arrived in Norway. On the trip I began Mary Woll-stonecraft’s 1796 Letters Written during a Short Residence in Swe-den, Norway, and Denmark (Broadwell, excellent edition) and have been inspired to write you real letters on real paper about our big adventure moving abroad and my new (first, real, per-manent) job. I am now officially associate (!!!) professor or the much more delicious title “førsteamanuensis” of English litera-ture in the Institute for Foreign Languages at the University of Bergen, Norway. The other languages in our department include French, Spanish, German, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian... both literature and linguistic sides. I have five other colleagues in English literature: total three for British, three for American (picture a buoy right in the middle of the Atlantic, demarcating the fields). No one has mentioned if medieval English literature was ever taught here before. Either it never was — or the institu-tional memory has been lost — or they want to forget — or they haven’t thought to mention whose shoes I am stepping into. Well, they are mine now.

AbstractThis paper describes our systems for the sub-task I in the Software Mention Detection in Scholarly Publications shared-task. We propose three approaches leveraging different pre-trained language models (BERT, SciBERT, and XLM-R) to tackle this challenge. Our best-performing system addresses the named entity recognition (NER) problem through a three-stage framework. (1) Entity Sentence Classification - classifies sentences containing potential software mentions; (2) Entity Extraction - detects mentions within classified sentences; (3) Entity Type Classification - categorizes detected mentions into specific software types. Experiments on the official dataset demonstrate that our three-stage framework achieves competitive performance, surpassing both other participating teams and our alternative approaches. As a result, our framework based on the XLM-R-based model achieves a weighted F1-score of 67.80%, delivering our team the 3rd rank in Sub-task I for the Software Mention Recognition task. We release our source code at this repository (https://github.com/thuynguyen2003/NER-Three-Stage-Framework-for-Software-Mention-Recognition).

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter looks at developments in running-water ecology and management. A suspected biodiversity crisis in running waters is driven by pollution, flow modifications, overexploitation, climate change, invasive species and other factors. Large migratory fish and mammals (the ‘megafauna’) are particularly at risk. Invasions are exacerbated by world trade and the linking of separate river catchments via artificial waterways. Emerging contaminants include pharmaceuticals, plastics and numerous industrial chemicals. Biomonitoring is adopting new (molecular) methods of assessing biodiversity, and identifies individual stressors (beyond organic wastes) and multiple stressors. Quantifying the ‘ecosystem services’ from rivers provides a basis for their conservation. Services can be provided by organisms acting as ‘ecosystem engineers’ (e.g. beavers can be part of natural flood defences). Rivers feed back on the climate by producing the greenhouse gases nitrous oxide and methane. Increasing water scarcity is the greatest threat to rivers. We briefly mention skills likely to be useful in the future.

This chapter focuses on John Wesley Gilbert’s undergraduate studies at Brown University from 1886 to 1888. The chapter examines the previous experiences of black students Inman Page and George Washington Milford at Brown, along with Gilbert’s choice of the school. The chapter explores his housing situation on campus and the reaction of fellow students to his presence, his coursework with Greek professor Albert Harkness and other instructors, and his growing involvement in the black community of Providence, Rhode Island. The chapter pays special attention to Gilbert’s relationship with Harkness, who was one of the most noted classical scholars in the United States as well as a leading figure in the establishment of the new American School of Classical Studies at Athens (American School or ASCSA). The chapter culminates with Gilbert’s hiring at Paine Institute in early 1888, a decision made by Paine’s interracial board of trustees in spite of objections from a white faculty member at Paine.

Abstract Stories of lost races are among the most characteristic myths of Mexico and Central America. Often the ancient people are giants or dwarves, and usually they are too clever, too evil, or too imperfect to exist in the present world. In some cases they are not killed but merely driven underground, and their power can still be felt. Some versions tell of two, three, or even four previous races, each destroyed in a different manner. Flood is the most frequent catastrophe, though many storytellers mention a too hot sun or an onslaught of jaguars. Christian influence may be detected in the Tarahumara version given here.

Abstract:
Time series classification is a subfield of machine learning with numerous real-life applications. Due to the temporal structure of the input data, standard machine learning algorithms are usually not well suited to work on raw time series. Over the last decades, many algorithms have been proposed to improve the predictive performance and the scalability of state-of-the-art models. Many approaches have been investigated, ranging from deriving new metrics to developing bag-of-words models to imaging time series to artificial neural networks. In this review, we present in detail the major contributions made to this field and mention their most prominent extensions. We dedicate a section to each category of algorithms, with an intuitive introduction on the general approach, detailed theoretical descriptions and explicit illustrations of the major contributions, and mentions of their most prominent extensions. At last, we dedicate a section to publicly available resources, namely data sets and open-source software, for time series classification. A particular emphasis is made on enumerating the availability of the mentioned algorithms in the most popular libraries. The combination of theoretical and practical contents provided in this review will help the readers to easily get started on their own work on time series classification, whether it be theoretical or practical.

When the United States dropped nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, a world ended for Margaret Mead. Suddenly, the world’s problems seemed more massive and immediate than ever before in human history. Mead turned her prodigious energies to these problems by working with dozens of organizations, many of them international and interfaith. As Mead’s circle of friends, colleagues, collaborators, and students expanded, in keeping with the expansive vision of liberal Protestantism at the midpoint of the twentieth century, her family ties frayed. Only her relationship with her daughter survived to 1950. Her relationship with Christianity hit a rough patch, too. Publicly, she spoke harshly of American churches. When asked to articulate what she believed, she did not mention God. Privately, though, a stream of spirituality still flowed, feeding her moral sensibility and forming a legacy to pass on to Catherine.

Abstract:
The succession of the BK117 D-2 main rotor concept from the semi-rigid rotor to the BK117 D-3 bearingless main rotor (BMR) system, derived from the H135, held many new and innovative additional benefits in its wake. Although the H135 system is the best on the market regarding maintenance effort and maintenace cost (DMC), it was the purpose to push this benchmark even further. To achive additional benefits, three major improvements needed to be successfully implemented and none of them was a given. First to mention is the concept of the blade being separated in three parts. In case of foreign object damage (FOD), most of the time only the outer part needs to be repaired. In parallel a new possibility to fold the system with a full folding capacity was introduced with the challenge to realize the extremely low DMCs of the H135, in a decisively bigger helicopter and to benefit from the experience of millions of flight hours and thousands of helicopters operated throughout the world. Second a reduced flapping hinge offset was introduced to improve the comport of ride. The third point is the attachment bearing stress laminate providing the benefit of slim shape in the connection area between Flex control unit (FCU) and blade airfoil section. All this with the reduction of vibration in mind that results from changing a four-bladed rotor to a five-bladed one [1]. We were motivated to include also a, for such kind of critical part, new liquid infusion molding technology, to have all process parameters in our own hands, to make the production of blades more reliable and at the same time reduce the number of nonconformities by introducing more and more automation in production, which was enabled using the bearing laminate design of the attachment [2]. This innovative new design, in combination with a new manufacturing process introduced in a different production site under considerable time and cost pressure, needed the dedication of a multi-disciplinary transnational team, to finally overcome all deviations that became visible throughout the industrialization and/or prototype phase. This finally led to a mature serial production within a two years time frame. The paper is intended to highlight the often shortened and only briefly recognized period of preproduction, prototyping and the serialization and maturation of critical composite parts.

Abstract:
Abstract The immense volume of user-generated content on social media provides a rich data source for big data research. Comentioned entities in social media content offer valuable information that can support a broad range of studies, from product market competition to dynamic social network mining and modeling. This paper introduces a new approach that combines named entity recognition (NER) and network modeling to extract and analyze co-mention relationships among entities in the same domain from unstructured social media data. This approach contributes to design for market systems literature because little research has investigated product competition via co-mention networks using large-scale unstructured social media data. In particular, the proposed approach provides designers with a new way to gain insight into market trends and aggregated customer preferences when customer choice data is insufficient. Moreover, our approach can easily support the evolution analysis of co-mention relationships beyond cross-sectional analysis of co-mention networks in a single year due to the abundance of social media data in multiple years. To demonstrate the approach to supporting multi-year product competition analysis, we perform a case study on mining co-mention networks of car models with Twitter data. The result shows that our approach can successfully extract the co-mention relationships of car models in multiple years from 2016 to 2019 from massive Twitter content; and enables us to conduct evolutionary co-mention network analysis with temporal network modeling and descriptive network analysis. The analysis confirmed that the co-mention network is capable of identifying frequently discussed entities and topics, such as car model pairs that often involve in competition and emerging vehicle technologies such as electric vehicles (EV). Furthermore, conducting evolutionary co-mention network analysis provides designers with an efficient way to monitor shifts in customer preferences for car features and to track trends in public discussions such as environmental issues associated with EVs over time. Our approach can be generally applied to other studies on co-mention relationships between entities, such as emerging technologies, cellphones, and political figures.

Abstract:
Identifying causal relations of events is a crucial language understanding task. Despite many efforts for this task, existing methods lack the ability to adopt background knowledge, and they typically generalize poorly to new, previously unseen data. In this paper, we present a new method for event causality identification, aiming to address limitations of previous methods. On the one hand, our model can leverage external knowledge for reasoning, which can greatly enrich the representation of events; On the other hand, our model can mine event-agnostic, context-specific patterns, via a mechanism called event mention masking generalization, which can greatly enhance the ability of our model to handle new, previously unseen cases. In experiments, we evaluate our model on three benchmark datasets and show our model outperforms previous methods by a significant margin. Moreover, we perform 1) cross-topic adaptation, 2) exploiting unseen predicates, and 3) cross-task adaptation to evaluate the generalization ability of our model. Experimental results show that our model demonstrates a definite advantage over previous methods.

Over a period of time, Nietzsche's ideas regained popularity and brought back to the fore the topicality they had never lost. Speaking of F. Nietzsche and his ideas, we cannot fail to mention the concepts of revaluation, superman, Christianity and God. The other characteristic of F. Nietzsche is his aphoristic and metaphorical style, which is sometimes condemned and denied, sometimes supported and welcomed. Nietzsche's aspiration is to go beyond the masses, to search for the new and different in the projection of modern man - as a reappraisal of values and a search for new values. The other goal of the study is to show the similarities and differences of Nietzsche's thought with "dissenting" philosophers. Abstract:
<p>BIM application in bridge engineering is becoming more and more popular and authorities are worldwide starting to request BIM as a prerequisite for contract awarding. However, some 20 years after the first mention of the term BIM, the postulated processes are to a great extent still piecemeal in this industry.</p><p>The heart of the BIM process is hereby a sophisticated digital model of the bridge. The quality of this model,</p><p>i.e. the integrity and completeness of its data structure, essentially governs the straight-forward usability for differing purposes, and thus the effectiveness of the BIM process. The advantage of end-to-end data management is often lost, when the dataset is confined to geometric data with ignoring the time as 4<span>th</span> dimension, and when applications like structural analyses require laborious data conversion and supplementation.</p><p>A strictly parametric model description is a key-point in this context. I.e. the description contains planning criteria and development rules as part of the model. This data structure allows the direct use for many different applications like visualization, quantity take-off, detailing, draft production, structural analysis and strength assessment. Other key-points are an intelligent and self-explaining user interface and an open structure allowing easy communication over different platforms.</p><p>To check the potential savings due to BIM we investigated effectivity issues cropped up in the planning process of a typical concrete bridge. Difficulties and backlashes encountered in the BIM process have been explored. In addition, a pilot project was used for testing an alternative process with a new software tool. By this means we checked, whether the detected problems concerning data conversion and learning phases for using different tools can be avoided by using an approach combining geometric BIM model and analytic model for static analyses.</p>

In International Conference on Education and New Developments. inScience Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36315/2022v1end086.

Abstract:
"The rapid spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) in early 2020 was an unexpected situation that affected all areas of human life, especially education and training. Distance education soon replaced classic, during the COVID-19 pandemic, due to the necessary social distancing to maintain global health. Distance education is not an unknown form of education, as it is often used as educational tool at all levels of education. However, the sudden and exclusive use of distance education during the pandemic created concerns in members of the academic community and brought about radical changes at both, educational and psychosocial levels. The purpose of this research is to record the degree of acceptance of distance teaching and learning methods in vocational education and training in Greece, especially in students studying at Public Vocational Training Institutes (PVTIs) and to identify potential obstacles or benefits of online learning during COVID-19. Distance education in combination with distance e-learning is a form of distance education in which participants of the educational process, i.e., teacher and students, are in a different physical space and communicate with synchronous and/or asynchronous internet platforms. Due to the nature of e-learning and its rapid spread in the educational community during the current pandemic, there is insufficient research examining its effectiveness in vocational education. The rapid development of mobile devices and wireless networks does not automatically mean the successful utilization and sustainability of e-learning systems. In order to study the experience and problems of distance learning platforms, quantitative research took place among the PVTI students through questionnaire. The sample of the quantitative research consisted of 768 Greek PVTI students that have responded, and a pilot statistical processing of the received data has been done. To track the experience with the distance learning platforms, the sample has been asked to mention the potential issues faced with the platforms. Most of the respondents mentioned technical and accessibility issues. A variety of issues have been mentioned, either difficulties of the users or problems of the system. In parallel, they pointed out the advantages of personal contact and feedback from their professors. It is interesting that only a small part of the sample reported no problems at all. The research shows moderate percentages of satisfaction from the enhancement of students' skills and from the coverage of their educational needs, while highlighting the upgraded role of asynchronous education platforms e-class, Moodle and e-classroom and of synchronous platforms Webex and Zoom."

In this society there is a continuous and intensive demand for competence in order to overcome the barriers in relation with resources, knowledge and skills, institutions, attitudes and beliefs, assessment, and an imperious need to create a new culture. In different studies has been highlighted the large range of obstacles hindering the distribution of geoinformation and GIS throughout different education systems in Europe. Though Geoinformation has been mentioned as a priority in the IST (Information Society Technology) research programme, in any document's of different policies or action plans there is no any mention of it as priority. More than, no mention concerning any ideas in connection with education in order to assure the appropriate amount of skills and to create the competencies. This indicate a major gap in policy making largely created by the subsidiary nature of education in the European activities with deference to national policies and programmes. Romania is not an exception. This paper examines the outcomes in terms of curriculum opportunities and realities for the use of geoinformation in schools and in teacher education and in research. The importance of professional development for teachers and the widespread use and implementation European standards is specifically highlighted. Abstract:
Robert Duncan Milne (1844-99), from Cupar, Fife, was a pioneering author of science fiction stories, most of which appeared in San Francisco’s Argonaut magazine in the 1880s and ’90s. SF historian Sam Moskowitz credits Milne with being the first full-time SF writer, and his contribution to the genre is arguably greater than anyone else including Stevenson and Conan Doyle, yet it has all but disappeared into oblivion. Milne was fascinated by science. He drew on the work of Scottish physicists and inventors such as James Clark Maxwell and Alexander Graham Bell into the possibilities of electromagnetic forces and new communications media to overcome distances in space and time. Milne wrote about visual time-travelling long before H.G. Wells. He foresaw virtual ‘tele-presencing’, remote surveillance, mobile phones and worldwide satellite communications – not to mention climate change, scientific terrorism and drone warfare, cryogenics and molecular reengineering. Milne also wrote on alien life forms, artificial immortality, identity theft and personality exchange, lost worlds and the rediscovery of extinct species. ‘A New Palingenesis’, originally published in The Argonaut on July 7th 1883, and adapted in this comic, is a secular version of the resurrection myth. Mary Shelley was the first scientiser of the occult to rework the supernatural idea of reanimating the dead through the mysterious powers of electricity in Frankenstein (1818). In Milne’s story, in which Doctor S- dissolves his terminally ill wife’s body in order to bring her back to life in restored health, is a striking, further modernisation of Frankenstein, to reflect late-nineteenth century interest in electromagnetic science and spiritualism. In particular, it is a retelling of Shelley’s narrative strand about Frankenstein’s aborted attempt to shape a female mate for his creature, but also his misogynistic ambition to bypass the sexual principle in reproducing life altogether. By doing so, Milne interfused Shelley’s updating of the Promethean myth with others. ‘A New Palingenesis’ is also a version of Pygmalion and his male-ordered, wish-fulfilling desire to animate his idealised female sculpture, Galatea from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, perhaps giving a positive twist to Orpheus’s attempt to bring his corpse-bride Eurydice back from the underworld as well? With its basis in spiritualist ideas about the soul as a kind of electrical intelligence, detachable from the body but a material entity nonetheless, Doctor S- treats his wife as an ‘intelligent battery’. He is thus able to preserve her personality after death and renew her body simultaneously because that captured electrical intelligence also carries a DNA-like code for rebuilding the individual organism itself from its chemical constituents. The descriptions of the experiment and the body’s gradual re-materialisation are among Milne’s most visually impressive, anticipating the X-raylike anatomisation and reversal of Griffin’s disappearance process in Wells’s The Invisible Man (1897). In the context of the 1880s, it must have been a compelling scientisation of the paranormal, combining highly technical descriptions of the Doctor’s system of electrically linked glass coffins with ghostly imagery. It is both dramatic and highly visual, even cinematic in its descriptions, and is here brought to life in the form of a comic.

Abstract:
The study of expressions of filiation has already been the subject of several articles, which were limited to periods prior to the Third Intermediate Period. The aim of this article is to evaluate these expressions within the specific framework of the Books of the Dead from the 21st and 22nd Dynasties. These periods are marked by a significant increase in the variety of expressions employed, whereas the New Kingdom manuscripts expressed filiation according to a more uniform and rigid scheme. Similarly to what happens with titles and despite the diversity of expressions, one observes a progressive decrease in the mention of filiation which almost disappears from funerary papyri, while long genealogies on temple statues are developing. This contribution attempts to understand the motivations behind the use of these expressions and more generally to grasp their purpose in expressing the identity of the deceased.

Azar, Matthew, Sabrina Camarda, Larissa Duggan, et al. Victorian Ghosts, 1852-1907. Edited by Matthew Dunleavy. York University, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.25071/10315/41231.

Full text
Abstract:
The following collection of Victorian Ghost Stories was collated and annotated by scholars at York University enrolled in the fourth-year Victorian Ghosts course offered through the department of English during Fall 2020. Starting with Elizabeth Gaskell’s “The Old Nurse’s Story” (1852)—a staple of many Victorian Ghost Story Anthologies—and ending with Ambrose Bierce’s “The Moonlit Road” (1907), this collection includes twenty-one ghost stories spanning six decades. As our classes were moved online for the 2020-21 academic year, this Scalar project functioned as a collaborative space with each student responsible for one ghost story (writing a short introduction and creating explanatory notes) and then finding links between those texts (and texts outside the course) to create a critical apparatus that helps guide readers through the anthology. This is the first edition and attempt at creating a project of this kind for this course and I hope it offers a foundation for future projects for EN 4573 (Victorian Ghosts) at York University. I cannot praise the students enough for their effort and enthusiasm during our time together when faced with learning a new software and completing unfamiliar assignments—not to mention, doing this all while navigating a (new to many of them) completely remote learning environment.

Jones, Natalie, Miquel Muñoz Cabré, Georgia Piggot, and Michael Lazarus. Tapping the potential of NDCs and LT-LEDS to address fossil fuel production. Stockholm Environment Institute, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.51414/sei2021.010.

Full text
Abstract:
The need for a managed transition away from fossil fuel production raises the question of whether and how countries are addressing this need in their national communications to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). A previous 2019 analysis of the first round of nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and long-term, low-emissions development strategies (LT-LEDS) found that few countries discussed how they would address fossil fuel production as part of their climate mitigation activities. Here, we examine new and updated NDCs and LT-LEDS, finding a growing number of NDCs and LT-LEDS that address fossil fuel production as part of mitigation. For the first time, several countries incorporate policies and/ or pathways for a managed decline of fossil fuel production. In contrast, many others foresee continued or expanded fossil fuel production, with no mention of efforts to prepare for a transition. Opportunities remain for countries to make better use of NDCs and LT-LEDS to align fossil fuel production with the Paris Agreement, including by more comprehensively reflecting on the equity implications of their plans, as well as addressing how countries plan to diversify their economies, ensure a just transition for workers, and cooperate internationally on a managed wind-down of fossil fuel supply. As COP26 approaches, this window of opportunity is still open, but it is rapidly closing.

Murisa, Tendai. African Philanthropy: Kicking Away the Scaffold. SIVIO Institute, 2025. https://doi.org/10.59186/si.dfa38u2v.

Full text
Abstract:
As the field of ‘African philanthropy’ grows, there is an emerging divergence of what the term actually means. There are three notable tendencies in trying to answer this question; first, there is a school of thought which states that African philanthropy is about the growth of a new set of resources (financial and otherwise) that are purely African in terms of source. The second tendency argues for the inclusion of non-African resources provided by philanthropy foundations from elsewhere outside towards causes on the continent. Finally, others argue that the source of funding is not the real issue, but instead, the focus should be on where it is deployed and, in this case, it is African because it has been deployed to causes on the continent. Beyond the contestations around ‘definition by source of resources’, there is a tendency to include all forms of solidarity carried out within communities as part of African philanthropy. These differences are not immediately obvious, but it is essential to mention that if not resolved, the subject or rather African Philanthropy, faces the risk of being superfluous without a coherent agenda. In this brief essay, I propose to carry out a number of things, first to revisit the subject of concepts. What does the term African philanthropy mean? Should we be concerned about the inherent challenges of a loose and broad definition? Secondly, I propose to explore the possibilities of African philanthropy as both a moment/space and a movement towards a rethinking of the continent’s development path. The gatherings under the banner of ‘African Philanthropy’ have grown in number and so has their popularity. Could it be the place for re-imagining Africa’s transformation?

Yannick, Lahti, and Palonen Emilia. Populism and EP Elections – Case Finland: Populism Gone Mad from Scissors and Chopping-board to Firing Guns and Latino Rush. European Center for Populism Studies (ECPS), 2025. https://doi.org/10.55271/pp0049.

Full text
Abstract:
After two relatively successful recent elections, the far-right Finns Party (FP) approached the early summer 2024 European Parliament elections amid a supranational atmosphere suggesting that these elections would mark a “turn for the far right” across both Europe and Finland. After successfully leading her party to a historic victory one year earlier in the national elections of Finland 2023, Riikka Purra was, according to polls and pundit opinions, heading toward a new election record—this time in the European Parliament. Facing a charged political atmosphere in national politics and due to her visible role as the national treasurer, Purra’s FP party adopted the populist radical right strategy of their ID and ECR fellows in the EU, and instead of loudly criticising the Union, as has traditionally been the case with far-right parties, they too adopted the tactic of aspiring to “change the European Union from the inside.” This led their whole campaign strategy to declare the FP as the “most pro-Europe party of Finland.” As neighbouring country Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine had left the FP with a united front, the question of whether to support Ukraine or not did not even enter the elections. FP in this regard was and still remains the most anti-Russian party of the far-right party families in Europe. With media coverage being favourable toward a positive outcome for the FP, the party’s concrete message left something to be desired. The cases of now former FP members Timo Vornanen and Teuvo Hakkarainen, not to mention the “Riikka scissors and chopping-board minister” case, undermined a more coherent message to the Finnish electorate, who just over a year ago had voted for the FP in great numbers. Partly, this led to an overwhelmingly poor result for the Finns Party, which took most politicians and spectators by surprise. The European Parliament elections of 2024 in Finland stand out as an interesting exception within the far-right in Europe, as FP steadily lost support in various constituencies. Keywords: Finns Party (FP), Populist radical right, Far-right, European Parliament 2024, Riikka Purra, Sebastian Tynkkynen, Finnish populist radical right, populist influence,

Doo, Johnny. Unsettled Issues Concerning eVTOL for Rapid-response, On-demand Firefighting. SAE International, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.4271/epr2021017.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent advancements of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft have generated significant interest within and beyond the traditional aviation industry, and many novel applications have been identified and are in development. One promising application for these innovative systems is in firefighting, with eVTOL aircraft complementing current firefighting capabilities to help save lives and reduce fire-induced damages. With increased global occurrences and scales of wildfires—not to mention the issues firefighters face during urban and rural firefighting operations daily—eVTOL technology could offer timely, on-demand, and potentially cost-effective aerial mobility capabilities to counter these challenges. Early detection and suppression of wildfires could prevent many fires from becoming large-scale disasters. eVTOL aircraft may not have the capacity of larger aerial assets for firefighting, but targeted suppression, potentially in swarm operations, could be valuable. Most importantly, on-demand aerial extraction of firefighters can be a crucial benefit during wildfire control operations. Aerial firefighter dispatch from local fire stations or vertiports can result in more effective operations, and targeted aerial fire suppression and civilian extraction from high-rise buildings could enhance capabilities significantly. There are some challenges that need to be addressed before the identified capabilities and benefits are realized at scale, including the development of firefighting-specific eVTOL vehicles; sense and avoid capabilities in complex, smoke-inhibited environments; autonomous and remote operating capabilities; charging system compatibility and availability; operator and controller training; dynamic airspace management; and vehicle/fleet logistics and support. Acceptance from both the first-responder community and the general public is also critical for the successful implementation of these new capabilities. The purpose of this report is to identify the benefits and challenges of implementation, as well as some of the potential solutions. Based on the rapid development progress of eVTOL aircraft and infrastructures with proactive community engagement, it is envisioned that these challenges can be addressed soon. NOTE: SAE EDGE™ Research Reports are intended to identify and illuminate key issues in emerging, but still unsettled, technologies of interest to the mobility industry. The goal of SAE EDGE™ Research Reports is to stimulate discussion and work in the hope of promoting and speeding resolution of identified issues. These reports are not intended to resolve the challenges they identify or close any topic to further scrutiny.

Rawlings, Deshanie, Gabriel Moore, Anton du Toit, et al. The effectiveness of opioid treatment delivery methods. The Sax Institute, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.57022/zwhw5494.

Full text
Abstract:
This Evidence Snapshot review identifies innovative models of service delivery for Opioid Treatment Programs and their costs. The review was conducted to support improving access to treatment in NSW. Innovative models of opioid treatment identified were digital health, primary care, low threshold, group-based treatment, and mobile outreach as well as a combination of these models. Telemedicine models were most frequently mentioned in the peer reviewed literature as these addressed many traditional barriers to treatment, particularly for rural and hard to reach communities. Primary care models were most frequently mentioned in the grey literature as using innovative approaches which included the use of designated nonphysician staff to perform the care coordination role and tiered care models with centralised intake and stabilisation of patients with ongoing management in community settings. None of the included papers mentioned costs.
