Purpose – The aim of this paper is to determine whether the accelerated growth of web content during the years 1989-2011 had an effect on New Mexico State University engineering PhD students' use of the library's collections. The research also solicited direct input from PhD advisors regarding their expectations for and perceptions of present day PhD reference lists. If the collections were being used with less frequency, there would be reason to increase outreach to the engineering graduate student population, as well as to review current engineering collection development policies. Design/methodology/approach – Reference lists from College of Engineering PhD dissertations produced 1989-1991 (pre-web), 1999-2001 (web-emergent), and 2009-2011 (post-web) time periods were analyzed using descriptive statistics. PhD faculty advisors from the College of Engineering were interviewed about their expectations for, and perceptions of, research resources used in PhD dissertations. Findings – The number of resources cited, percentages of type of resource (e.g. book, journal, patent, etc.) and age of citation did not vary substantially over time, although the percentage of journal articles cited to total number of citations per dissertation increased post-web. Some websites were cited in the post-web period, but not in significant numbers. Engineering faculty expressed concerns that some PhD students were not critically evaluating and fully synthesizing the information they were citing in the literature review sections of their dissertations. Originality/value – The results of the citation study provided PhD faculty advisors with the positive news that there appears to be no degradation in the quality of references post-web. However, the expressed faculty interest in seeing some dissertators undertake a more robust analysis of the literature created an outreach opportunity for the engineering librarian: a graduate student workshop in how to use the library collections to perform a thorough survey of the relevant research in order to write an effective literature review.

It is an honor to serve as the chair of GODORT. For those of you who do not know me, I first worked with state and federal information while at the New Mexico State Library. I left the Land of Enchantment for Big Sky Country in 2011. At the University of Montana I took on the role of regional for the first time, and fell in love with that fabulous collection. I eventually learned that the state nickname did not apply to Missoula with an inversion layer during a nasty fire season. I moved to Fargo in the middle of winter to start at North Dakota State University in 2018, just a few months before our Past Chair started.

Purpose – The purpose of this study was to determine whether engineering master’s students at a medium-sized university use library-provided abstracting and indexing (A&I) services (e.g. Compendex), and if they do, to what extent, in what manner and for what purposes. Design/methodology/approach – A mixed methodology approach was used to explore electronic information-seeking patterns of engineering master’s students at New Mexico State University. Usage statistics, a focus group and a Web-based survey were used, the latter composed of 17 questions using a critical incident approach and direct questions to probe: reasons for and method of search, types of materials used (with relative frequencies), means of obtaining materials and evaluations of the usefulness of five library-provided A&I services. Findings – Only 15 per cent of respondents used a subscription A&I service such as Compendex when searching specific terms. The majority of sources used were located through known term searches, and master’s learned of these information resources through article citations or conversations with colleagues. Half the respondents reported using Google Scholar to find the last scholarly article they had read. Engineering master’s students – similar to practicing engineers – evaluate the costs associated with obtaining information, and may “satisfice”. Even so, students expressed interest in increasing their knowledge of skills and strategies to find worthwhile electronic information. Originality/value – This study sheds light on engineering master’s students’ use of A&I services, and examines their perceptions of five of these services commonly provided by academic libraries.

Purpose This paper aims to propose a set of quantitative statistical indicators for measuring the scientific relevance of research groups and researchers, based on high-impact open-access digital production repositories. Design/methodology/approach An action research (AR) methodology is proposed in which research is associated with the practice; research informs practice and practice is responsible for informing research in a cooperative way. AR is divided into five phases, beginning with the definition of the problematic scenario and an analysis of the state of the art and ending with conducting tests and publishing the results. Findings The proposed indicators were used to characterise group and individual output in a major public university in south-eastern Mexico. University campuses hosting a large number of high-impact research groups. These indicators were very useful in generating information that confirmed specific assumptions about the scientific production of the university. Research limitations/implications The data used here were retrieved from Scopus and open access national repository of Mexico. It would be possible to use other data sources to calculate these indicators. Practical implications The system used to implement the proposed indicators is independent of any particular technological tool and is based on standards for metadata description and exchange, thus facilitating the easy integration of new elements for evaluation. Social implications Many organisations evaluate researchers according to specific criteria, one of which is the prestige of journals. Although the guidelines differ between evaluation bodies, relevance is measured based on elements that can be adapted and where some have greater weight than others, including the prestige of the journal, the degree of collaboration with other researchers and individual production, etc. The proposed indicators can be used by various entities to evaluate researchers and research groups. Each country has its own organisations that are responsible for evaluation, using various criteria based on the impact of the publications. Originality/value The proposed indicators assess based on the importance of the types of publications and the degree of collaborations. However, they can be adapted to other similar scenarios.

Elmer Ottis Wooton (1865–1945) was one of the most important early botanists to work in the Southwestern United States, contributing a great deal of natural history knowledge and botanical research on the flora of New Mexico that shaped many naturalists and scientists for generations. The extensive Wooton legacy includes herbarium collections that he and his famous student Paul Carpenter Standley (1884–1963), prolific botanist and explorer, used for the first Flora of New Mexico by Wooten and Standley 1915 , along with resources covering botany and range management strategies for the northern Chihuahuan Desert, and an extensive, yet to be digitized, historical archive of correspondence, field notes, vegetation sketches, photographs, and lantern slides, all from his travels and field work in the region. Starting in 1890, the most complete set of Wooton’s herbarium collections were deposited in the NMC herbarium at New Mexico State University (NMSU), and his archives, now stored in a Campus library, have together been underutilized, offline resources. The goals of this ongoing project are to secure, preserve, and promote Wooton’s important historical resources, by fleshing out the botanical history of the region, raising appreciation of herbarium collections within the community, and emphasizing their unique role in facilitating contemporary research aimed at addressing pressing scientific questions such as vegetation responses to global climate change. Students and the general public involved in this project are engaged through hands-on activities including cataloging, databasing and digitization of nearly 10,000 herbarium specimens and Wooton’s archives. These outputs, combined with contemporary data collection and computational biology techniques from an ecological perspective, are being used to document vegetation changes in iconic, climate-sensitive, high-elevation mountainous ecosystems present in southwestern New Mexico. In a later phase of the project, a variety of public audiences will participate through interactive online story maps and citizen science programs such as iNaturalist, Notes from Nature, and BioBlitz. Images of herbarium specimens will be shared via an online database and other relevant biodiversity portals (Symbiota, iDigBio, JStor) Community members reached through this project will be better-informed citizens, who may go on to become new stewards of natural history collections, with the potential to influence policies safeguarding the future of our planet’s biodiversity. More locally, the project will support the management of Organ Mountains Desert Peaks National Monument, which was established in 2014 to protect the area's human and environmental resources, and for which knowledge and data are currently limited.

Walter Lwowski was born in 1928 in Garmisch, Bavaria, Germany, and passed away in Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA in 2010. He received a doctorate in organic chemistry (Dr. Rer. Nat.) from the University of Heidelberg in 1955. He held faculty positions at Yale University and New Mexico State University. His main research activities dealt with nitrene chemistry and nitrogen heterocyclic chemistry. His wide and important contributions gained him national and international recognition and he may be rightfully considered New Mexico s greatest and most illustrious organic chemist.

New Mexico is a rural state with unique barriers to health service delivery to homebound elderly. The University of New Mexico’s Visiting Physicians Program allows these patients to stay in their homes by bringing physicians to them. The physicians use community agencies to provide nursing, lab, X-ray, and physical therapy services. The University of New Mexico has also integrated home visits into the medical students, residents and geriatric fellows’ educational programs. By involving medical students, residents and fellows in home care, future physicians who practice in New Mexico will incorporate this valuable service into care for the homebound elderly in their practice communities.

The research features the relevance and importance of the transition to the digital economy and digital society as the most important priorities of the state policy of the Russian Federation. The authors emphasize the impact of this process on the development of all types of libraries, including university libraries. Digital environment results in a number of social and technological challenges, e.g. the specifics of dealing with e-users of university libraries, access to electronic resources, new requirements for the publication activity of teachers and researchers in specialized sources and professional competence status, creativity of managers and specialists of university libraries, etc. The paper describes The Concept of Development of University Libraries, a draft document that emphasizes the changing role of university libraries and the need to change the content of their activities. The project takes into account the development of world libraries and such components as infrastructure, structure, and ultrastructure, including new challenges to the digital environment. The study features the case of the State University of Management that educates management personnel for libraries.

The forty papers that make up the Fifth Off-campus Library Services Conference Proceedings were presented at the Offcampus Library Services Conference sponsored by the Central Michigan University Libraries and the Extended Degree Programs of Central Michigan University. The conference was held October 30 - November 1, 1992 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Oligocene landscapes of New Mexico were dominated by andesite stratovolcanoes and resurgent domes of ash-flow tuff (ignimbrite) cauldrons (Smith et al., 1985). This pervasive volcanism produced volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks that have been neglected by vertebrate paleontologists, so that, until now, no Oligocene vertebrate fossils have been discovered in New Mexico. This documents the initial results of vertebrate paleontological investigations of Oligocene rocks in New Mexico, a lower jaw of the oromerycid artiodactyl Montanatylopus matthewi, the first Oligocene mammal from the state. Among the many issues associated with integrating e-books into library collections and services, the revision of existing workflows in cataloging units has received little attention. The experience designing new workflows for e-books at Oregon State University Libraries since 2008 is described in detail from the perspective of three different sources of e-books. These descriptions highlight where the workflows applied to each vendor’s stream differ. A workflow was developed for each vendor, based on the quality and source of available bibliographic records and the staff member performing the task. Involving cataloging staff as early as possible in the process of purchasing e-books from a new vendor ensures that a suitable workflow can be designed and implemented as soon as possible. This ensures that the representation of e-books in the library catalog is not delayed, increasing the likelihood that users will readily find and use these resources that the library has purchased.

RESUMENEl objetivo de este artículo es reflexionar sobre los mecanismos de financiación y de control de las instituciones religiosas por los laicos en las primeras décadas de la conquista y colonización de Hispanoamérica. Investigar sobre la inversión laica en lo sagrado supone en un primer lugar aclarar la historiografía sobre laicos, religión y dinero en las sociedades de Antiguo Régimen y su trasposición en América, planteando una mirada desde el punto de vista de las motivaciones múltiples de los actores seglares. A través del ejemplo de restituciones, donaciones y legados en losAndes, se explora el papel de los laicos españoles, y también de las poblaciones indígenas, en el establecimiento de la densa red de instituciones católicas que se construye entonces. La propuesta postula el protagonismo de actores laicos en la construcción de un espacio cristiano en los Andes peruanos en el siglo XVI y principios del XVII, donde la inversión económica permite contribuir a la transición de una sociedad de guerra y conquista a una sociedad corporativa pacificada.PALABRAS CLAVE: Hispanoamérica-Andes, religión, economía, encomienda, siglos XVI y XVII.ABSTRACTThis article aims to reflect on the mechanisms of financing and control of religious institutions by the laity in the first decades of the conquest and colonization of Spanish America. Investigating lay investment in the sacred sphere means first of all to clarifying historiography on laity, religion and money within Ancien Régime societies and their transposition to America, taking into account the multiple motivations of secular actors. The example of restitutions, donations and legacies inthe Andes enables us to explore the role of the Spanish laity and indigenous populations in the establishment of the dense network of Catholic institutions that was established during this period. The proposal postulates the role of lay actors in the construction of a Christian space in the Peruvian Andes in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, when economic investment contributed to the transition from a society of war and conquest to a pacified, corporate society.KEY WORDS: Hispanic America-Andes, religion, economics, encomienda, 16th and 17th centuries. Purpose This paper aims to describe a variety of accessibility initiatives implemented at the Michigan State University (MSU) Libraries to better support persons with disabilities who want to use and access library services and resources. Design/methodology/approach By using two campus accessibility policies to help expand and improve its accessibility efforts, the MSU Libraries implemented accessibility purchasing procedures for e-resources; drafted a five-year accessibility plan, which launched an extensive multi-year staff accessibility training plan and detailed plans for content accessibility and accessibility investment; dedicated additional library staff positions and time to accessibility; drafted an accessibility statement and website documentation; established an in-house remediation service; increased library web page and collection remediation; and began leading efforts related to vendor e-resource accessibility in the Big Ten Academic Alliance library consortium. Findings As a result of these many accessibility initiatives, the MSU Libraries has thought strategically about and taken action on constantly improving its accessibility in a variety of areas; provided or hosted 29 staff accessibility training sessions; implemented new accessibility positions, roles and services; and helped influence and improve library e-resource accessibility, especially through its leadership in the Big Ten library consortium. Originality/value Most libraries strive to provide welcoming access to information and library services for all users, including persons with disabilities, but resources and literature on comprehensive accessibility initiatives in academic libraries are somewhat limited. The library accessibility initiatives implemented by a large, academic research library shared in this paper will hopefully contribute to the much-needed library and information science literature on this topic.

In this issue Clinton Burleson of New Mexico State University at Alamo gordo and Wenda Trevathan of New Mexico State University at Las Cruces describe an example of an "expert system" called SkelMAP, to be used in helping students and professionals conduct skeletal analysis in both forensic and archaeological research situations. In both cases, it should be of great practical help to people working with skeletal materials.

The research experiments reported were conducted at the Materials Research Center, ATR Institute, University of New Mexico, at the request of the Research Bureau, New Mexico State Highway and Transportation Department (NMSHTD). The purpose was to determine the amount of additives required for mitigation of alkali-silica reactivity (ASR) based on screening tests. Fly ash additives routinely used in New Mexico and a new material—lithium nitrate—proposed by the Strategic Highway Research Program were evaluated. The work was motivated by continuous problems with early deterioration of concrete structures due to alkali-silica reactivity. The work was based on the use of acceptance criteria established by NMSHTD for expansion due to ASR, as measured in screening tests. Recommendations resulting from this research do not consider all aspects of the behavior of concrete mixtures and structures. The additive recommendations are based on reduction in mortar-bar expansion during accelerated tests.

The service-oriented approach of the university academic library is highlighted: The social institution of services is to increase quality of living, to be a tool of socializing and adaptation. The authors conclude that in the context of the education new paradigm the services make the focus of Prioksky State University Library to foster efficient library operation and coordination within the university divisions.

A new health sciences library integrated into a state of the art academic and clinical education building provided opportunities for transforming library services delivery, positioning space as a service, deeper integration of library expertise within the University community and the curriculum, and for enhancing the student experience.

Work is proceeding on the compilation of a database on Mexican art, comprising references to bibliographic and visual resources, and artist’s biographies, and representing the history of art in Mexico from the beginnings of Prehispanic civilisation to the present day. UNESCO’s Common Communication Format (CCF) has been adopted, as also has CDS/ISIS software. A thesaurus is in the process of being developed; terms are being drawn in many cases from existing indexes and other sources. MEXICOARTE has been initiated by the Art Section of the Mexican Library Association (AMBAC) in association with the National University (the host institution) and the Nation Institute of Fine Arts.

The 1988 convention will be held 20-22 October at the Las Cruces Hilton. New Mexico State University will host the meeting as part of its centennial celebration. A Mexican banquet, a wine reception hosted by the university and the New Mexico Vine and Wine Society, a program on western and southwestern literature, a program on class, race, and gender in Chicana literature, as well as excursions to Juarez, Mexico, and to Old Mesilla will help participants celebrate the flavor of the region.

On the enlarged meeting of Educational and Methodical Council of Higher Education Institutions of the Russian Federation on the Education in the field of Library Information Activities on the basis of the Moscow State University of Culture and Arts, which was held on December 5, 2012. On the agenda of the meeting were questions of realization of new generation of industry educational standards for baccalaureate and magistracy. The special attention was paid to the methodical support of academic activities, the justification of initiation of actual training programs for students, the prospects of training for libraries in the near future.

During the 2007 growing season, melon (Cucumis melo) samples from the state of Guerrero in Mexico showing mosaic and other virus-like symptoms were collected for analysis. Electron microscopic examination of negatively stained leaf-dip extracts revealed the presence of abundant virus-like particles with features characteristic of the family Bunyaviridae. No other viral particles were observed in these preparations. However, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) specific for the most common Tospovirus spp. gave negative results. Antibodies raised against purified nucleocapsids reacted specifically with the infected leaf extracts in Western blots and double-antibody sandwich ELISA. The viral RNA was used as a template for a cDNA library, and nucleotide sequence analysis identified cloned cDNAs representing sequences corresponding to the three Tospovirus genome segments. Sequence comparisons showed that the new virus had the highest similarity to Chrysanthemum stem necrosis virus (CSNV). Phylogenetic analysis of two genome regions confirmed that this virus, provisionally named Melon severe mosaic virus (MeSMV), is a previously undescribed Tospovirus sp. belonging to the “new world” clade of Tospovirus spp. An initial survey of various cucurbit crops in various states of Mexico confirmed the widespread occurrence of this virus.

Dr. Richard Greenleaf has been one of the most influential historians of colonial Latin America in general, and of the Inquisition in particular. He received his university and graduate education in his home state at the University of New Mexico. His professional career took him to Mexico City during the exciting period of the 1950s and 1960s. From there he went on to be one of the guiding forces in the consolidation of the Latin American Studies program at Tulane University. This interview was conducted in the summer of 2007 at Dr. Greenleaf's residence in Albuquerque.

The article deals with the institutionalization of Mexican social sciences. The central hypothesis is that the state and the social sciences have always been related. Sometimes the link has been strong, at other times weaker, but it has never been absent. Mexico has had a relatively well-defined social policy of support for scientific activities. The most important institutions are sheltered by the state, at least in terms of budget. For this reason, the starting point of the institutionalization process in Mexico can be traced to the end of 1920s. Since then, strong institutions have been built. Without mentioning those dedicated to “hard research”, social science institutions have been important in discovering our past and understanding our present. The present study covers a period of 80 years, although the emphasis is on the period after 1939, the year in which the Social Sciences Research Institute of the National University (ISSUNAM) was founded.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present a new service providing Danish citizens access to articles from printed journals delivered in a digital form. Design/methodology/approach – The paper describes the interlibrary loan infrastructure between Danish libraries and the legal agreement between the copyright holders and the State and University Library. Findings – The service already covers 82 per cent of the Danish population. Originality/value – The digital article service is a rather unique service, especially regarding the delivery of articles from popular printed magazines in digital form to the patrons.

North Carolina State University Libraries has built a strong employee orientation program based on the belief that early socialization contributes to the success of new employees. Its orientation model includes a focused orientation session, a checklist, and individual meetings with key library faculty and staff. All aspects of the orientation focus heavily on socialization factors such as understanding the Libraries’ mission and values, meeting key people within the organization, and becoming acquainted with other new colleagues. This paper details the Libraries’ orientation approach and the research that supports it.

Australia is a federation of six states, two self-governing territories and a number of external territories. The state libraries were modelled on the British Museum Library and saw themselves as ‘national’ institutions, with a mandate to collect ‘books of all languages and descriptions’. Until the 1950s they remained the backbone of the Australian library system. By 1962, with the expansion of university education, the holdings of the university libraries for the first time equalled the combined resources of the state libraries and the National Library of Australia (NLA). The other development that transformed the post-war library scene was the emergence of the NLA itself from the relative obscurity of the pre-war years. The rivalry that grew up between the state libraries and the NLA was eventually put to rest by a number of factors, including the creation of the Australian Bibliographic Network and the resulting National Bibliographic Database, which made all types of library more interdependent; also the enforced sharing of the new poverty of the 1980s and the early 1990s. However, the state libraries themselves are now better housed, leaner and more efficiently run than they were even a decade ago. The 5.2 million volumes they hold account for almost 13% of the nation's bibliographic resources.

In the November 1990 (Vol. 64, no. 6) issue of the Journal of Paleontology, Lehman and Carpenter described an Aublysodon, which at the time was believed to be the most complete Carnosaur known from the Upper Cretaceous Kirtland Shale of northwestern New Mexico. Recently, a more complete specimen, considered to be a tyrannosaurid dinosaur on the basis of a proximally constricted third metatarsal and a partial D-shaped (in cross section) premaxillary tooth (Molnar, 1990), has been brought to the attention of the Museum of Geology at Arizona State University by an amateur paleontologist who recognized its scientific importance after obtaining it from an individual in New Mexico. The remains of this dinosaur, collected in northwestern New Mexico sometime in late 1989 or early 1990 by unknown persons, include both cranial and skeletal material (Figure 1.1).
