Abstract:
ITC/USA 2015 Conference Proceedings / The Fifty-First Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 26-29, 2015 / Bally's Hotel & Convention Center, Las Vegas, NV<br>The goal of this project is maximize the performance of the telemetering system for the INCA cubesat mission using what we are learning in class to develop tests to figure out the optimal selection of frame scheme, data rate, and modulation technique based on the requirements of the mission. This project will help me learn about different modulation techniques and give me real world experience testing a telemetry system. I will evaluate my results through a comparison of the error rates for the different modulation schemes and do statistical analysis to show the reliability of the data. The results will be useful to any future mission that implements the same satellite communication system including future missions at NMSU.

Leahy, Elizabeth, and Elizabeth Leahy. "Writing from the Border: Frontier Rhetoric and Rhetorical Education at University of Arizona and University of New Mexico, 1885-1910." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/625453.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the histories of the University of Arizona (UA) and the University of New Mexico (UNM) before 1910. This project brings a trans-hemispheric approach to composition history by developing a theory of "frontier rhetoric" as a lens for analysis. Used to describe the rhetorical strategies that emphasize narratives of progress to disenfranchise others, frontier rhetoric allows us to examine the ways in which colonialism is embedded within institutions and reproduced by curriculum and policies. In the case of UA, institutional stakeholders envisioned their university as an Americanization project that both opened up Arizona’s natural resources to profit, while creating a citizenry devoted to defending their country. In the case of UNM, we see a subtler manifestation of frontier rhetorics, such as in the way Spanish was emphasized for the purposes of sending multilingual teachers out into the primarily Spanish speaking regions of the territory. An analysis of the students' curricular and extra-curricular writing from this time shows that students had the opportunity to challenge and resist frontier rhetorics through newspaper writing. The curricular and extra-curricular use of public genres such as newspapers allows students to take a more active role in negotiating their own understandings of citizenship and community engagement. Finally, this dissertation connects these histories to the present by discussing the ways in which writing program administrators can use frontier rhetoric to assess the inclusivity of their programs and adopt a translingual orientation in an effort to combat monolingual mentalities. This history makes visible the ways in which colonial legacies are embedded within our educational institutions, challenges the Eurocentric tendencies of composition histories, and offers new perspectives on the ways in which rhetorical education can both reproduce and resist oppressive attitudes about language, race, and culture.

Moore, Michelle L. "A qualitative study of how new Ball State University faculty learn to teach." Virtual Press, 1998. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1115237.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on how new college faculty learn to teach. It is a qualitative study involving four first year Ball State University college professors from different departments. The past research explores faculty beliefs, skills, and styles as well as graduate preparation for teaching. The literature also covers faculty development programs, university and administrator influence, and the future of college teaching. The researcher used observations and interviews in the research design and analyzed the data by coding it into themes. The findings are discussed within the following topics: teaching techniques, professor experience, faculty development, graduate preparation and teaching assistantships, formation of teaching style, and professors' personal theories. The conclusion includes a discussion of how past experiences have taught professors how to reflect on their teaching to make modifications and how there is a lack of emphasis placed on teaching in the graduate schools. The substitution of teaching techniques for a teaching style, as well as, the amount of training professors have in college student development is also explored. The discussion also includes how new professors form personal theories of teaching. There is also a section on some specific findings for Ball State University, as well as recommendations for future research.<br>Department of Secondary, Higher, and Foundations of Education

Gallegos, Juan Martín. "Reconstructing Identity/Revising Resistance: A History of Nuevomexicano/a Students at New Mexico Highlands University, 1910-1973." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/318838.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation addresses the development of Nuevomexicano/a student identity at New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) during three periods: (1) New Mexico's Territorial period and early statehood, (2) the 1940s, and (3) the late 1960s and early 1970s. Nuevomexicano/a student identity was shaped through a process of accommodating to and resisting institutional powers. Since 1898, Nuevomexicano/a students have been active members of the university community, despite periods when they constituted a small portion of the student body and the institution's frequent disregard for Nuevomexicano/a culture and language. As they participated in campus activities, Nuevomexicano/as reconstructed their individual and collective identities, appropriating terms such as Spanish or Chicano/a, as a rhetorical strategy to revise their relationships with the university. Extralocal institutions, including government institutions, national protest movements, and international organizations shaped public conversations about cultural identity. During the first two periods, students employed subtle strategies of resistance that included presenting speeches and reorganizing student government. Often labeled as accommodationist, these strategies represent viable rhetorical strategies that provided students access to dominant literacies, which were used to promote social change. In the 1970s, Chicano/a students utilized more aggressive practices, such as a weeklong sit-in, to radically alter the institutional culture at NMHU. In the forty years since the sit-in, NMHU has developed into a university that supports its Nuevomexicano/a students and incorporates elements of their culture into the university's social fabric.

Krings, Alexander. "Systematics of Gonolobus and the Gonolobinae (Apocynaceae, Asclepiadoideae): Circumscription based on evidence from molecules and morphology; new species and new combinations; typification, revision, and conservation in the West Indies." NCSU, 2007. http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/theses/available/etd-01312007-103752/.

Full text
Abstract:
Gonolobus Michx. (Apocynaceae: Asclepiadoideae) is a New World genus comprising an estimated 100?150 species. The degree of variation in estimated species numbers is largely the result of still poorly known tropical taxa and differences regarding generic limits. Characters historically used to delimit genera such as Gonolobus within Gonolobinae?such as laminar dorsal anther appendages and various follicle morphologies?have been controversial and their evolution remains unknown, not having been explored in a phylogenetic framework. The primary objectives of the current research were to (1) test the monophyly of Gonolobus in the context of a phylogeny of New World Asclepiadeae and (2) explore the evolution of laminar dorsal anther appendages and winged follicles with respect to their potential utility in generic circumscription. Secondary objectives were to revise a tractable monophyletic group as borne out by the phylogenetic analyses and to provide typifications and new combinations as appropriate for Gonolobinae in the West Indies (ca. 50 spp.). Evidence from the chloroplast (trnL-F, rps16) and nuclear genomes (Leafy) presented here supports the monophyly of both the subtribe and the genus Gonolobus in a narrow or broad sense. A transversion in the trnL-F spacer is shown synapomorphic for Gonolobus s.s. Two indels in Leafy, as well as winged follicles, are shown synapomorphic for Gonolobus s.l. Several earlier subgeneric circumscriptions in Matelea, including Ibatia, Heliostemma, Pachystelma, and Ptycanthera, are not monophyletic. Considering the support for a monophyletic Gonolobus s.s., recent taxonomic changes in West Indian taxa, and that several species have been published from the area since the last comprehensive treatment over a hundred years ago, a revision of the genus in the West Indies seemed appropriate and is provided. An index of names and typifications for Gonolobinae in the West Indies is also provided, including numerous lecto- and neotypifications. Twelve new species are described for the West Indies (5 Gonolobus spp., 5 Matelea spp.) and South America (2 Matelea spp.).

Abstract:
Institutions of higher education invest a significant amount of resources in recruiting, processing, and advising new students. When students leave the institution prior to graduation, the university loses considerable revenues. Therefore, it is important for colleges and universities to refine their student recruitment and retention strategies to avoid forgone revenues by predicting which students are likely to need particular types of support services (DeBerard et al, 2004). Current models of prediction utilize extensive surveys that are impractical to administer each term, and they do not adequately identify the broad range of student persistence categories needed in order to gain a greater understanding of persistence behavior (Davidson, 2005; Porter, 2000; Tinto, 1975). This study created a linear discriminant function to predict a broad range of persistence levels of first-time freshmen students at California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB), by identifying pre-enrollment and early enrollment student variables that existed within the database of the University. This information may be used to develop support service strategies to better assist incoming students predicted to have a greater probability of not persisting.

Full text
Abstract:
We describe a new divide-and-conquer method, P-Coffee, for alignment of multiple sequences. P-Coffee first identifies candidate alignment columns using a position-specific substitution matrix (the T-Coffee extended library), tests those columns, and accepts only qualified ones. Accepted columns do not only constitute a final alignment solution, but also divide a given sequence set into partitions. The same procedure is recursively applied to each partition until all the alignment columns are collected. In P-Coffee, we minimized the source of bias by aligning all the sequences simultaneously without requiring any heuristic function to optmize, phylogenetic tree, nor gap cost scheme. In this research, we show the performance of our approach by comparing our results with that of T-Coffee using the 144 test sets provided in BAliBASE v1.0. P-Coffee outperformed T-Coffee in accuracy especially for more complicated test sets.

The manufacturing team evaluatedevery aspect of the design implementation from component manufacture through fieldtesting. This evaluation was intended to guide future evolutions of the technology byanswering the most basic question: ?What has the Talley Student Center experiencetaught us about the technology and its future??A set of eight powerblind units, each measuring approximately three feet by fivefeet, were manufactured and installed in the Talley Student Center Boardroom. Workbegan with an existing design template. Component manufacture was performed duringthe fall semester of 2000. Manufacturing system development, troubleshooting, and unitassembly were completed during the first half of the 2001 spring semester. Installation, final troubleshooting, final delivery to the customer, and a public unveiling werecompleted in the second half of the 2001 spring semester. It was concluded that the technology works in a real-world setting. Althoughsome quality problems existed in the final delivered product, the reason in each case waswell understood, and potential avenues for solutions presented. It was also concluded thatthe product could be mass-produced to sufficient quality using relatively low-technologytools and techniques.<P>

Elder, Amanda Marie. "Identity and Community in Rural Higher Education: Creating New Pathways to Women's Leadership in Oaxaca, Mexico." PDXScholar, 2017. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/3677.

Full text
Abstract:
The emergence of higher education opportunities in rural areas of Mexico such as throughout the state of Oaxaca has opened new opportunities for young women's professional development and new individual and community identities. I explore tensions between the collective imaginary of rural Mexico and rural women's emerging sense of independence and self-determination in light of higher education's expanding opportunities. Educational opportunities lead to community formation around commonality of experience in addition to ascribed community relationships and roles. I situate this analysis within the context of the Universidad Tecnológica de los Valles Centrales de Oaxaca (UT), a small university in San Pablo Huixtepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. Through interviews and participant observation, I answer the following questions: (1) How is rural women's identity produced through policy, geography, and social influences? (2) In what ways do college women experience change in terms of family relationships and professional trajectories? and (3) How do changes in rural women's collective identity through professional development contribute to social movements for gender equality? This thesis provides a broader examination of the implications of shifts in family trajectory for belonging and women's identity in Mexico, contributing to larger discussions regarding higher education in rural areas, women's experiences and interactions within institutions, and women's collectives as venues for societal transformation. In conclusion, I offer recommendations for educational policy that supports women's identity development, promotes gender equality, and encourages women's leadership.

This paper discusses the detection of Fault Tolerance in computers. It outlines the present techniques available, namely, Anderson's and Avizienis: The writer introduces a new method based on Anderson's detection technique; this modified version turns out to be a more foolproof system. Since the shortcomings of both the 'old' techniques are discussed in detail the writer also suggests how to overcome them using the technique that he had proposed. To prove the excellence of his method, the writer applies his technique to the SIFT system to show that it is workable and superior to previous ones. Dompenciel, Jose Antonio Rivera. "Developing a New SNP Chip for Genomic Selection in the North Dakota State University Barley-Breeding Program." Diss., North Dakota State University, 2020. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/32055.

Full text
Abstract:
The use of Genomic Selection has become popular due to its wide success in private and public breeding programs. The current dissertation aims to derive information that will be used to produce a single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) chip that can be used to successfully predict traits of economic importance for the North Dakota State University (NDSU) barley breeding program. Three training populations were tested to determine which should be used for predictive modeling. Multiple predictive models were employed to verify the most effective method for each individual trait. Through this research, four major findings were concluded: the successful identification of (i) the traits that are candidates for prediction, (ii) the most successful models for each trait, (iii) the minimum number of markers required to predict a trait, and (iv) the markers that should be included on NDSU barley breeding program’s new SNP chip for genomic selection.

Abstract:
The study of the small place can illuminate larger issues in colonial Latin American history. Studies of colonial and modern communities reveal the variety of social and economic structures found in Spanish America Atrisco was founded on a grant of land to Don Fernando Duran y Chavez. After Don Fernando's death, the grant was divided into communal and privately held lands. Water was reserved as common and the community controlled access to irrigation and pond water. Common lands were for pasturage and foraging. Privately held lands were defined by access to irrigation Residents of Atrisco participated in New Mexico's sheep trade and engaged in subsistence agriculture. Eventually, they expanded communal land holdings to the banks of the Rio Puerco. Geographic expansion represented economic expansion. Patterns of land holding, marriage, and economy indicate a society defined by economic class and caste identity. Land-owning 'Spaniards' dominated. "The breakdown of Franciscan hegemony in the Kingdom of New Mexico, 1692-1752." Tulane University, 1992.

Find full text
Abstract:
From the conquest of the Kingdom of New Mexico by the Spanish in 1598 to the Pueblo Indian revolt in 1680, the Franciscan Order was the dominant institution in that territory. As the only religious faction represented in the colony, the Franciscans controlled the rhythms of life in a Catholic state over the entire population. The friars were numerically the largest Spanish organization in the Kingdom and the most cohesive. The primary rationalization for the Kingdom's existence was the propagation of the Catholic faith to the indigenous population, hence the friars enjoyed virtual complete control over the natives politically, socially and economically. Through the powers of the Inquisition, the Franciscans jealously defended their privileges and powers at the expense of the local civil officials, Spanish citizens and Indians. Most of the missionary friars were devote, zealous individuals committed to evangelism After the Pueblo rebellion was subdued, the Franciscans returned to New Mexico to resume their tasks. However, the friars were unable to restore their former authority. The purpose for the colony to the Spanish monarchy was now for military ends and, consequently, the local civil government was given greater powers in relationship to the Church as well as over the general population. The Franciscans lost their total religious autonomy to the expansion of episcopal control and saw most of their Inquisition powers reduced by the Holy Office. Within the Order, the number of friars never rebounded completely to the levels prior to 1680, and the mission program was plagued by poor policy decisions and less ardent, capable priests Though scholars have long noted these changes in post-1680 New Mexico, the process by which the Franciscan Order's hegemony was eliminated has never been examined. It is the purpose of this dissertation to study in detail by what means and why the Franciscans' position in the Kingdom was reduced. Integral to this effort, special attention will be directed to the internal workings of the Order and to the careers of the friars that labored within the mission field of New Mexico through the first half of the eighteenth century<br>acase@tulane.edu

"The new context of statutory interpretation of tax statutes in Mexico." Tulane University, 2006.

Find full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explains how the interpretation of tax law is rule by Article 5 of the Mexican Federal Tax Code and how this article has been interpreted by scholars, tax authorities, taxpayers and courts. Traditionally, the fundamental elements of tax law have been interpreted in a strict form, which means that the interpreter has to find the literal meaning of the statute, no more. Fortunately, this criterion was superseded by Precedent 133/2002 of the Second Courtroom of the Mexican Supreme Court which is the heart of this dissertation and was the culmination of a progressive development in the field of interpretation of tax law by federal courts. In this precedent the court held that even though articles that contemplate the essential elements of a tax are of strict application, those articles could admit other methods of interpretation in order to find their meaning. This crucial criterion has been recently complemented by the same Second Courtroom, through precedent 27/2006, in which clearly states the meaning of 'strict application' and establishes that this concept must be understood not like a strict interpretation or a method of interpretation but as the result of an interpretative activity The dissertation also explains how the cited development of the criterion held by federal courts has been poorly accepted by administrative courts and by Mexican scholars. Tax authorities and tax payers have been accepted this criterion only when it is convenient for their own interests In this work the author studies how the federal courts in USA, especially the American Supreme Court of Justice, interprets tax law and what have been stated by law and by American scholars The author also compares the Mexican and the American juridical system in relation with the interpretation of law and concludes that the differences are not essential; both countries apply the same methods; the difference is that the Mexican system grants a huge deference to the letter of law and the American system to the intention of Congress Finally, the author proposes the amendment of Article 5 of the Federal Tax Code, in order to adopt the existent criteria of the Mexican Supreme Court when interpreting tax statutes<br>acase@tulane.edu

"Presidential popularity in Mexico and Peru: Traditional approaches, new perspectives." Tulane University, 1999.

Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes two extremely popular presidents, Mexico's Carlos Salinas de Gortari and Peru's Alberto Fujimori, to gauge the relevance of three variables frequently used to explain the evolution of presidential approval ratings in advanced democracies: time, the economy and news media coverage. After an extensive analysis of public opinion polls from the two countries, this study concludes that none of these variables, by themselves, could have had a determining influence on the development of presidential popularity ratings in Mexico and Peru. In the case of Peru, neither time, media coverage nor the president's economic achievements appear to have affected the public's willingness to support Fujimori. If anything, the evidence indicates instead that popular support for the Peruvian president can be reliably---if not conclusively---related to political factors, such as the dismemberment of the Sendero Luminoso guerrilla movement. Similarly, in Mexico no discernable link was found between President Salinas's approval ratings and time, media coverage or 'pocketbook' factors. A potential correlation was discovered, however, between support for the president and popular endorsement of his administration's economic reform program. Of particular interest is this dissertation's finding that the issues that appear to be most closely related to presidential approval ratings in Mexico and Peru share a common trait: their ability to create hope among the population. Consequently, without attempting to establish a definite relationship between these issues, this study suggests that presidential popularity in these countries could have been guided by government initiatives---whether economic or political in nature---that had the capacity to alter popular expectations of the future. From this perspective, it may have not mattered if these policies were capable of delivering any immediate rewards to the population as long as they generated future hopes. The fact that they were implemented with minimum regard for democratic procedures also seems to have been of little importance to voters, despite the potentially dire consequences for the future development of democracy in Mexico and Peru<br>acase@tulane.edu

"Mystics in Mexico: A study of Alumbrados in colonial New Spain." Tulane University, 1995.

Find full text
Abstract:
This is a study of heterodox ideas and behaviors, and of the society in which they were engendered Alumbrado is the name given to certain heretical groups of mystics who first appeared in sixteenth century Spain. These people generally believed that mental prayer was superior to vocal prayer; that external religious forms and practices, ie. rosaries, scapulars, images, fasting etc., were of no avail; that in quietistic prayer the soul could be taken over by God; and that in such a state one could become perfect and incapable of sin. Certain alumbrados, convinced that God acted within them, were notorious among their contemporaries for sins of the flesh. Carnal relationships were said to be the innocent sharing of divine love The geographical focus of this study will be New Spain, an area roughly coterminus with contemporary Mexico. Though attention will be given to old world origins, the focus of this study will be on Alumbrados in a colonial setting. The study is intended as a presentation and an explanation of Alumbrado beliefs and of their transformation over time. It will explore the influence of class, ethnicity, age, gender and occupation in the formation of these heterodox groups. It will look at the influence of key individuals, such as Gregorio Lopez, who was seen as a model for Alumbrado belief and praxis in New Spain Within the context of ecclesiastical history, this study will clarify the roles of religious and secular clergy, nuns, beatas and lay persons in the Alumbrado movement. It will also help to clarify real and perceived distinctions between these heterodox groups, Jews and Protestants. The place of the Alumbrados in the larger history of spirituality, mysticism, heresy, and esoteric societies will be duly noted. By viewing the relatively frequent violations of sexual norms by Alumbrados, this study will present a portrait of prevalent, mores in the colony, Finally, attention will be given to the political implications inherent in the Alumbrados' rejection of orthodoxy This study will, albeit indirectly, supplement and amplify the work already done in the field of Inquisition Studies and in the comparative studies of Humanist and Counter Reformation ideologies<br>acase@tulane.edu
