The aim of this article is to highlight the relationships between contemporary tendencies in the humanities (the new ontologies) and contemporary architectural practices. The author articulates the distinction between the optics of the «old ontologies» and the the new ontologies. The ontologies considered to be new ones are flat, free from classical opposition between the whole and the parts and based on modality of possibility, but not obligation. Objects and practices traditionally referred to as architecture appear to be based on the principles of the «old ontologies&raquo

The history of architecture and contemporary architectural discussion show that the encounters of architecture and philosophy are neither rare nor exceptional. The central thesis of this article is that today architecture and philosophy are connected in a way that goes beyond the variety of their interdisciplinary co-operation. The two domains of thought are connected in a more "existential" sense: they both need to address certain issues that concern the conditions of the possibility of their future existence. Despite that the ontologies (classical ontologies) have become standard for representing knowledge; however, they are not able to represent and reason with uncertainty which is one of the characteristics of the world that must be handled. Probabilistic Ontologies have come to remedy this defect. This paper is part of this framework in which the authors have proposed a new method of probabilistic ontology construction, named Prob-Ont, by integrating uncertainty to elements of OWL ontology (especiall

The profusion of existing ontologies in different domains has made reusing ontologies a best practice when developing new ontologies. The ontology reuse process reduces the expensive cost of developing a new ontology, in terms of time and effort, and supports semantic interoperability. Existing ontology development tools do not assist in the recommendation of ontologies or their concepts to be reused. Also, existing ontology recommendation tools could suggest whole ontologies covering a set of input keywords without referring to which parts of them (e.g., concepts) can be reused. In this paper

Consequently, I develop the term social ontology to look at how human capabilities of mind and body are brought about through an interaction with the material world. The focus of this thesis is a certain family of ontological positions. These positions say that there is some class of objects and properties, to which both physical objects and properties reduce and which are the kinds of things we confront in perceptual experience. Though largely absent from contemporary discussions of ontology, there are various reasons to think they deserve consideration. Species of this family, and similar views, have a prominent role in early analytic philosophy. Ontology-mediated query answering is a popular paradigm for enriching answers to user queries with background knowledge. For querying the absence of information, however, there exist only few ontology-based approaches. Moreover, these proposals conflate the closed-domain and closed-world assumption, and therefore are not suited to deal with the anonymous objects that are common in ontological reasoning. We propose a new closed-world semantics for answering conjunctive queries with negation over ontologies formulated in the description logic ELH⊥, which is based on the minimal canonical model.

Unification in Description Logics (DLs) has been proposed as an inference service that can, for example, be used to detect redundancies in ontologies. The inexpressive Description Logic EL is of particular interest in this context since, on the one hand, several large biomedical ontologies are defined using EL. On the other hand, unification in EL has recently been shown to be NP-complete, and thus of significantly lower complexity than unification in other DLs of similarly restricted expressive power. However, the unification algorithms for EL developed so far cannot deal with general concept

Abstract:
The Description Logic EL is an inexpressive knowledge representation language, which nevertheless has recently drawn considerable attention in the knowledge representation and the ontology community since, on the one hand, important inference problems such as the subsumption problem are polynomial. On the other hand, EL is used to define large biomedical ontologies. Unification in Description Logics has been proposed as a novel inference service that can, for example, be used to detect redundancies in ontologies. In a recent paper, we have shown that unification in EL is NP-complete, and thus

Abstract:
Ontologies based on Description Logic (DL) represent general background knowledge in a terminology (TBox) and the actual data in an ABox. DL systems can then be used to compute consequences (such as answers to certain queries) from an ontology consisting of a TBox and an ABox. Since both human-made and machine-learned data sets may contain errors, which manifest themselves as unintuitive or obviously incorrect consequences, repairing DL-based ontologies in the sense of removing such unwanted consequences is an important topic in DL research. Most of the repair approaches described in the liter

In the context of our current planetary crises, in a world that continues to be shaped by capitalist, colonialist, androcentric and anthropocentric visions, we are faced with the urgency of reconsidering, at the deepest levels, the way we relate with other human and nonhuman beings. This working paper aims to contribute towards that end by looking at human-nonhuman relations through the concept of conviviality, understood as the everyday living together with difference, and how it intersects with inequality. In the first part of this paper, more-than-human conviviality-inequality is investigat
