Abstract:
AbstractThis article explores the U.S. career of the Dutch immigrant violinist Jacques Oliveira. Following successful performances in Britain, Oliveira sailed for the United States in the fall of 1859. Under P.T. Barnum's management, the twenty-three-year-old became a fixture on New York's theatrical scene, as an instrumental soloist with Tom Thumb's company, with the Drayton Parlor Opera troupe, and with Hooley and Campbell's Minstrels. After a year, he traveled south, settling in occupied New Orleans, where he had family connections. Despite the economic difficulties of the time, he soon became an important figure in the city's cultural life, only to die during an outbreak of cholera and yellow fever in the summer of 1867.In the absence of letters or diaries, the article relies heavily on close examination of period newspapers, city directories and census data to reconstruct Oliveira's world. Oliveira's activities, his successes and struggles, offer insights into the place of the working musician, newly arrived in the Unites States in the late 1850s. Examining the events of his life enables us to contrast cultural life in New York and New Orleans at the time of the Civil War. The article illuminates the place of the instrumentalist in the theater, reveals how attitudes toward music were influenced by a cultural hierarchy, provides insights into the place of the violin in the musical life of the United States, and examines the impact of the Civil War on musical life in New Orleans.

Abstract:
Hurricane Katrina struck the city of New Orleans in August of 2005, devastating the built environment and displacing nearly one-third of the city’s residents. Despite the considerable literature that exists concerning Hurricane Katrina, the storm’s long-term impact on neighbourhood change in New Orleans has not been fully addressed. In this article we analyse the potential for Hurricane Katrina to have contributed to patterns of gentrification during the city’s recovery one decade after the storm. We study the association between Hurricane Katrina and neighbourhood change using data on the damage from the storm at the census tract level and Freeman’s (2005) gentrification framework. We find that damage is positively associated with the likelihood of a neighbourhood gentrifying in New Orleans after one decade, which drives our recommendations for policy makers to take greater concern for their communities during the process of rebuilding from storm damage.

Abstract:
This article is a study of Zhuang Opera in the Guangxi Province in China. There are three general genres of Zhuang Opera, the analysis of selected musical pieces of these four types focuses on the music structure of Pingban melody, and the rhyme of the song texts --- Yaojiaoyun. This study is a pioneering work on the Zhuang Opera's musical form as there is currently no published work on the music of the opera and its association with related music categories. Except for very few research collections on national opera, most studies mainly focus on the history, literature, and folklore of traditional Zhuang Opera. In general, this study utilized new research methodologies producing different results from previous research, while at the same time, confirming earlier studies on the music and performance styles of the opera.

Varavkina-Tarasova, Nadiya. "Joan’s of Arc Aria No. 7 from the opera "The Maid of Orleans" by P. Tchaikovsky: the spiritual symbolism of the canon of repentance when "trialed under the sign"." Problems of Interaction Between Arts, Pedagogy and the Theory and Practice of Education 49, no. 49 (September 15, 2018): 19–35. http://dx.doi.org/10.34064/khnum2-49.02.

Abstract:
The article examines the spiritual symbols of the musical and sound structure of Joan’s Aria No. 7 " Forgive me, hills and native fields " from the opera "The Maid of Orleans" by P. Tchaikovsky. The subject of the study is the iconic expositional characteristics of the dramatic development of the image of the protagonist of the opera as a vividly representative historical and symbolic phenomenon, expressed through the centuries-old context of musical spiritual symbols. "Liturgy of John Chrysostom" and "The Maid of Orleans" were marked by a powerful creative core, bravely creating a new level of thinking, opening new opportunities for the Transfiguration. P. Tchaikovsky reflected deeply on the spiritual quality of the man. By the wisdom of the Gospel postulates, one can realize how indissolubly these two works have merged together: "Divine Liturgy" and the history of the Divine feat of the main heroine of the opera. The birth of a new spiritual quality in Tchaikovsky’s music was accompanied by a sufficiently strong resistance of the surrounding psychological field of belief and world outlook. The composer had been working on the opera for about 9 months, which is associatively comparable to the bearing and birth of his "spiritual child". The spiritual meaning of the genre canvas of Aria is liturgical which is the canon of repentance. Syncretism of symbols manifested in systems of semantic and genre assimilation is represented by rhetorical signs and baroque genres. The ostinato spiritual and psychological Credo of the personality of Joan of Arc is explained - 1) in her legendary 19-year-old life, a young peasant girl who could not read and write possessed the greatest gift of purity of thoughts and an unshakable faith in the Spiritual World, which governs the earth; 2) she had intuitive-hearted Mercy to her persecutors, enemies, executioners; 3) she subtly felt the highest signs and symbols that were inaccessible and incomprehensible to her surroundings and contemporaries; 4) Joan at her own and sole discretion considered the form, colors and meanings of her symbols – a white embroidered banner, a coat of arms with holy symbols and a sword that she used only to defend and repel the blows. We should pay attention to the fact that both the composer and the heroine of the the "font" of the spirit materializes. Hence, perhaps, the source of the inner potential of spirituality for the related and beloved female images in his works, embodied by the composer one after another – Tatiana and Joan, – being so distant historically and socially from one another are both so close to the great spiritual potential and victorious level of morality, invigorated by the naturalness of the free space of nature, the inner beauty and sincere kindness, concealing the heroic courage of female charm behind the delicate refinement, able to illuminate many generations of people with the centuries-old example to follow. The 18-year-old Joan at the moment of exhibiting the image in the first act of the opera is shown in the vital fullness of a thinking person, who can follow her Divine Principle. The dramaturgic line of Joan is a mono opera of Spirit in the whole opera. In the context of the analysis of the melody, there attracts attention the symbol of harmony of the "lyrics of light" with the intonations of the achieved through much suffering world of the loving heart – the rhetorical formula of the Baroque era - the figures of "pathopoija:" the excitement of passions " parrhesa "," relatio non harmonia ". In the melody of Aria, there is a tension that arises under another symbol, but does not go into it, but psychologically preserves the previous harmony through inclination to the main tonic. This symbol in music of different styles and creative interpretation in the article is defined as "trial under the sign" - powerful in its might, which originates from the environment of reflective knowledge of the Spirit. In the Aria melody, the symbol tirata is not associated, as is customary, with a "shot" or "lightning," but is a symbol of a sparkling spiritual instrument – a sword. Such is embodied in a rather rare image of St. Nicholas the Miracle-Worker, for example, on the icon in the Church of the Holy Trinity in the monastery of St. Iona in Kiev. Saint Nicholas is depicted with a mighty sword, passionately raised vertically upward in the name of protecting holy justice. The sword is also associated with the power of the spiritual thought-arrow, reflected in the symbols of the graphic hooked notation of Kievan Rus.

Unlike edward cameron dimock, Henry David Thoreau never traveled to India, but he imagined Yankee merchant ships transporting ice blocks from Walden Pond to New Orleans and Calcutta, where the pure Walden water would mingle with the sacred water of the Ganges. Less romantically, one can imagine the Walden ice mingling with British gin and tonic in clubs of the East India Company. In our own time, Ed Dimock has brought America and India together in more significant ways. I'm delighted that he is in New Orleans today—honoring him seems a wonderful way of celebrating ourselves on this fiftieth anniversary of the Association for Asian Studies.

Abstract:
IntroductionBrain volume loss (BVL) occurs in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, reflecting irreversible tissue damage. No evidence of disease activity (NEDA), a composite measure assessing absence of clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) disease activity has emerged as important treatment goal in MS and may be associated with preservation of brain tissue and BVL prevention.MethodsPatients in OPERA-I/II (NCT01247324/NCT01412333) received 600 mg ocrelizumab (intravenous) very 24 weeks or 44 µg subcutaneous interferon beta-1a (IFNβ-1a) 3x-weekly for 96 weeks. Brain MRI assessments were completed at baseline and 24/48/96 Weeks. Brain volume normalised for head size was measured using SIENAX software. Percent change in whole brain volume (WBV) was determined using SIENA software, changes in cortical grey (GMV) and white (WMV) matter volumes were measured using validated, locally developed Jacobian integrator atrophy software. NEDA was defined as absence of relapses, 12-week confirmed disability progression, T1 Gd–enhancing lesions and new and/or enlarging T2-lesions. Changes from baseline in brain volume were examined in NEDA patients and those with evidence of disease activity (EDA), using the mixed-effects model for repeated measures method.ResultsThe analysis included 1520 patients (ocrelizumab-761; IFNβ-1a-759). Over 96 weeks, 569 (37%) patients [ocrelizumab-363 (48%); IFNβ-1a-206(27%); p<0.001] had NEDA. Compared with EDA patients, NEDA patients had significantly less WBV loss from baseline (30%-reduction; p<0.001). In the NEDA group, ocrelizumab patients had significantly less WBV loss (32%-reduction; p<0.001), WMV loss (34%-reduction; p=0.044) and GMV loss (30%-reduction; p<0.001) from baseline than IFNβ-1a patients. In the EDA group, ocrelizumab patients had significantly less WBV loss (11%-reduction; p=0.047) and GMV loss (21%-reduction; p<0.001) but not WMV loss (1.03%-increase; p=0.90) from baseline than IFNβ-1a patients.ConclusionThese findings highlight the importance of NEDA as treatment goal with respect to brain tissue preservation regardless of treatment choice. Ocrelizumab may confer additional benefits in NEDA patients NEDA beyond what is observed with IFNβ-1a.

February 2020 will mark the centennial of the UNOVIs, the school of Malevich, the Vitebsk association of the Asserters of New Art, a unique attempt of collective artistic thinking. They were bellicose in their arrow-headed motion, in its aggressive stance, in its effectual rhythm, in following the program, in their possession of young arms – the energy of sincere faith. The evening of February 6, 1920 featured a crucial event in the transformation of the Vitebsk artistic school, a significant subject in its history and, most importantly, the meaning-bearing phenomenon in absorbing the Vitebsk artistic milieu. The author of the article examines the creation of the Vitebsk version of the futurist opera “Victory over the Sun” as a starting position of creature of a new form of artistic association, as well as the forms of Kazimir Malevich’s initial actions in Vitebsk, as an assertion of the center of an entire system of formation, direction and artistic utterance.

Abstract:
Abstract A vogue for coloratura dance arias began in the 1850s. This emerging genre combined melismatic singing with two hugely popular social dance genres: the bolero and the waltz. Scholars have observed an association between these social dances and a certain euphoric feminine sensuality, but the connection between this youthful ebullience in dance and virtuosic female vocality has been largely ignored. Dancing was notorious in the nineteenth century because of its dangerously arousing and vertiginous effects. As dances increased in speed and difficulty, so too did the singing of sopranos in midcentury Paris. In exploring relationships between dance, femininity, and singing, this article situates coloratura dance arias in the Paris of Napoléon III's Second Empire, a city sometimes condemned for its decadent materialism or dismissed because of its political impotence, in spite of its cultural, architectural, and technological importance. I argue for a connection between coloratura and the female body in precisely the era when the venerable singing style became the almost exclusive domain of the female singer and, simultaneously, reached its apogee in a Paris devoted to all the joy and glamour it could afford. Specific performers such as Marie Cabel and Caroline Carvalho were key to the success and even creation of these dance arias. These sopranos were certainly objectified in a problematic manner, but they were also “envoiced” (Carolyn Abbate's term) as wielders of a compelling musical power: coloratura. In providing virtuosic and luxurious expressions of femininity, these coloratura dance arias established a new sense of female vocality in the aural imagination of the Second Empire.

Abstract:
Abstract Writing to Schoenberg on August 7, 1930, Berg explained the differences between the libretto for his new opera and the original plays by Frank Wedekind, and in particular the return of Lulu's ““victims”” (her husbands) as her clients in the final scene of the opera. While Berg sought to create a large-scale symmetry with this return, he also posited a link between marriage and prostitution that did not exist in Wedekind's texts. Significantly, Berg was not alone in equating these two institutions; numerous Victorian writers had already made arguments in this regard. In fin-de-sièècle Vienna this issue was widely debated and reflected some prevailing views of female sexuality, including those expressed in the influential works of Otto Weininger and Karl Kraus. Indeed, as is well documented, Berg was keenly engaged in these issues. The association of marriage with prostitution was a crucial element in Berg's conception of the opera. Evidence found in the autograph manuscripts and the finished work confirms that Berg represented these institutions as essentially the same at several levels of the work. This is revealed in his musical portrayal of Lulu, the Prince, the Man servant, and the Marquis, as well as in such musical choices as his borrowing of Wagner's wedding march from Lohengrin and his use of Wedekind's Konfession, a song about prostitution. Indeed, the representation of the two institutions is directly linked to the opera's musical language, particularly the transition from tonal to twelve-tone structures in the final act. Most importantly, this representation reflects Berg's construction of identities for the main characters in the opera and, by extension, the sociocultural issues portrayed in this seminal work.

On June 23, 2006, the American Library Association was holding its Annual Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, the first major conference to return to the city post Hurricane Katrina. My scheduled visit of four days was abruptly cut short as a result of two communications: a call from Walter Massey, President of More-house College in Atlanta, Georgia, and an e-mail from William Potter, Dean of the University of Georgia Libraries. By the time the day was over, I learned that a collection of manuscripts and books documenting many of the writings, speeches, and notes of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. . . .

Abstract:
e12501 Background: For years clinicians have made the empirical observation that there is an unusually high number of African American women (AAW) with triple-negative (Tneg) breast cancer (BC) in New Orleans (NO). Knowing the rate of Tneg BC in AAW is higher than white women (WW), we explored the hypothesis that AAW in NO have a higher rate of Tneg BC when compared to AAW in the rest of Louisiana (LA). Methods: We analyzed data from the Louisiana Tumor Registry, one of the NCI funded SEER registries, for the tumor characteristics of invasive female BC diagnosed in 2010, focusing on racial disparities; HER2 status was not available for prior to 2010 diagnosis. We explored the association of HER2 status with age, race, ER, PR, HER2, T, N, M to determine crude and adjusted odds ratios and rate distribution of subtypes using SEER*Stat and SAS programs. Results: Overall age-adjusted incidence rate of Tneg BC in AAW was 30 per 100,000 in NO, which was 24% higher than that in AAW in the rest of LA and two-fold the rate in WW of both NO and LA. The highest rate of Tneg BC was seen in AAW aged 65-69 in NO (184.97 per 100,000) compared with 81.5 per 100,000 in AAW aged 55-59 in LA. AAW with Tneg BC in NO were more likely to have more aggressive BC. Young age, black race, large tumor size, higher grade and TNM stage were significantly associated with the high risk of Tneg BC. After adjusting for age, geographic area, and other tumor characteristics, the higher risk of Tneg BC in AAW remained in NO compared with the rest of LA (OR=1.4; 95% CI: 1.01-1.87). Conclusions: AAW in NO are more likely to have poorly differentiated and Tneg BC compared to AAW in the rest of LA. This disparity remains when comparing our data to previously published literature in other parts of the US. We plan to continue our data analysis and compare NO data to the national average as the HER2 data become available in the SEER Program to better characterize the disparity. This newly identified disparity in the AAW population in NO has clinical implications and translational research potential as it enables us to broaden the understanding and treatment of this aggressive disease.
