Full text
Abstract:
Ethylene is involved in the senescence of carnation flowers. It is synthesized abundantly after full opening of the flowers and accelerates wilting of petals, which results in withering of the flowers. We investigated the possible involvement of ethylene production in the loss of display value of cut flowers of ‘Mini-tiara’ carnation, a new subspecies derived from Dianthus caryophyllus L. by interspecific cross with wild-type Dianthus species (wild pinks). Flowers of ‘Mini-tiara’ carnation have a unique morphology with pointed-shaped petals, some of which in the middle part of the flowers stand straight and build a dome throughout the display time, and lose their display value when the dome collapses by bending all petals outside (full opening of flowers). Ethylene evolution from ‘Mini-tiara’ carnation was not detected from flowers with upstanding petals, but occurred several days after the collapse of the dome (after full opening of the flowers), the time they already lost their display value. These findings indicated that ethylene production is not engaged in the loss of display value of ‘Mini-tiara’ carnation.

Full text
Abstract:
Nineteen new strawberry breeding clones, bred at the Institute for Breeding Research on Fruit Crops in Dresden-Pillnitz, Germany, were evaluated for their suitability for organic production at a Verticillium-infested site in Vienna, Austria. Soil cover, plant vitality, resistance to leaf spot diseases as well as flower damages by the strawberry blossom weevil (Anthonomus rubi) and by spring frost were recorded. In two consecutive years, marketable yield and fruits infested by Botrytis cinerea were assessed. Three breeding clones, P-7189, P-8043 and P-8071, were considered as suitable for organic strawberry production. P-7189 and P-8043 showed high tolerance to Verticillium wilt. The breeding clones P-8155 and P-8166 performed well under organic management but had very soft fruits that were not acceptable for commercial fruit production. The rest of the breeding clones were low-yielding, however, some of them could be of interest for home gardens due to their good flavour and high plant vitality.

Abstract:
During the past twelve months RJ Lee Group has manually collected and published over one hundred thousand composite SEM images consisting of three components: a low magnification image, a high magnification image, and an x-ray spectrum. In addition, about one and one-half million discrete features have been automatically located and compositionally/morphologically characterized, with about one-fourth of those features then having ancillary images collected automatically based upon characterization criteria. Finally between ten and twenty thousand images have been collected for the production of image montages. The output of this effort has been systematically entered into networked databases where it is accessed for post-processing, analysis, and report generation.

Full text
Abstract:
We discuss some new aspects of charm production trigerred by recent observations of the LHCb collaboration. The LHCb collaboration measured small asymmetries in production of D+D−mesons as well as $ D_s^ + D_s^ - $ mesons. Is this related to initial quark/antiquark asymmetries in the proton ? Here we discuss a scenario in which unfavored fragmentations $ q/\bar {q} \to D $ and $ s/\bar {s} \to D_s $ are responsible for the asymmetries. We fix the strength of such fragmentations – transition probabilities, by adjusting to the size of the LHCb asymmetries. This has consequences for production of D mesons in forward directions (large xF ) as well as at low energies. Large asymmetries are predicted then in these regions. We present here some of our predictions. Consequences for high-energy neutrino production in the atmosphere are discussed and quantified. The production of Λc baryon at the LHC is disussed. Large deviations from the independent-parton fragmentation picture are found.

Full text
Abstract:
Wide hybridization between crop brassicas and their wild relatives is an important approach towards increasing the genetic variability, which can be utilised for brassica breeding programs. A new intergeneric hybrid between Erucastrum cardaminoides and Brassica oleracea var. alboglabra was produced using embryo rescue techniques. The F1 hybrid was intermediate between the male and female parent for most of the morphological characters. Cytological studies of pollen mother cells of the hybrid revealed a preponderance of univalents at metaphase I. The number of bivalents in the digenomic hybrid was lower than expected. However, the presence of trivalent and quadrivalent in cells indicated some homoeology between the two genomes and hence the possibility of introgression of genes into the cultivar. The first backcross progeny was obtained using B. oleracea var. alboglabra as the pollen parent. Further, it is being used for developing new alloplasmic lines. The intergeneric hybrid was also used as bridge species to transfer wild (E. cardaminoides) cytoplasm to B. napus and B. carinata. The new intergeneric hybrid and bridge cross hybrids produced in the present investigation have contributed towards increasing the genic and cytoplasmic variability and thus broadening the genetic base of crop brassicas.
