Abstract:
Radio is an under-researched medium, yet it is present in an increasing range of forms and roles in our everyday lives. For the last two decades, Australians over 18 years have listened to an average of 20 hours of radio a week. Owning multiple receivers is very much the norm and it is not unusual to hear of households with five or more radios. We wake to radio, listen to radio in our showers, go to work with radio in our cars, listen to radio while we are on telephone-hold during the day, and take radios to the beach or to sporting events to follow the commentary. Radio at home can be aural w

AbstractNearly all of the exciting discoveries in radio astronomy have come from new instruments or techniques which have provided new frequencies, high sensitivity, higher spatial or time resolution, or improved image quality. Since the last General Assembly a number of major new radio telescopes have been completed while construction of others have only just begun. At the same time telescopes of the more distant future are still in the conceptual stage. Since the appearance of television, the death of the radio has been expected. However, despite all the threats it is still alive and has seen an increase in audiences in a hostile scenario for a centennial media. Reality shows that the radio has transformed its weaknesses into strengths and has adapted to the new ecosystem faster than any other media. The reasons for this quick and successful adaptation are related to the simplicity of the support and to its unisensorial language, but also to an unprecedented capacity of adaptation to new situations. A methodology for the measurement of the radio frequency environment close to the radio noise floor is presented for urban, suburban and rural areas within New Zealand for the purposes of characterisation and trend monitoring by radio spectrum managers. Flux density measurements in bands within a range of frequencies from 80 MHz to 8 GHz have been made in urban, suburban and rural areas of New Zealand during 2007 and 2008. An analysis of the band occupancy is presented in summary form. These summaries are intended as a starting point for radio spectrum usage and can be used as a reference for
