Abstract:
The development of school libraries established at schools providing elementary education in the 19th century is closely related to the development of this type of schools after 1774, when the General School Rules were published. For the first time, they referred to education as a political issue and declared the interest of the state in the education of all the population. In the 1820s, a decree of the court study committee ordered district school supervisors to inspect books in school libraries and gave them the right to decide whether a particular book fits into the school library. In 1869, a new school act cancelled the supervision of the Church over schools and transferred it to the state. First, the state supported school libraries by listing them among the teaching aids that should be available for every school. In addition, a decree of the Ministry of Cult and Education encouraged the establishment of school libraries where they were still missing. Subsequently (1875), however, the ministry ordered teachers to check new books acquired by school libraries, to inspect also all the other books already deposited in the libraries and to discard all of those that were unsuitable. Ten years later (1885), new inspection of all school libraries was ordered.

Abstract:
Comic books are becoming increasingly popular in the field of education. In the past, comic books were excluded from school libraries and classrooms. However, with the resurgence in the popularity of comic books and students’ increased demands for them, they are now considered as recreational reading with educational value. In response to this, school libraries have begun collecting comic books and including them as part of their regular collections. This research paper reflects on the current situation of comic books in primary and middle school library collections and examines school librarians’ perceptions towards educational values of comics. The investigation was launched in Hong Kong, Taiwan, New Zealand, Australia and Japan – making comparisons amongst different levels (primary school and secondary school), and different types (public school and private school) of schools in five different countries. Questionnaire surveys were sent to selected school librarians and were the main method of data collection. A total number of 683 responses were collected for this study. Research results include librarians’ attitudes towards comic books in school libraries, adolescent readers’ use of school libraries, their reading and borrowing practices, as well as other problems encountered with the on-going maintenance of comic books as part of the school libraries’ regular collections.

Abstract:
If you could own only ten book on the teaching of elementary school mathematics, which would you choose? If your school's library suddenly acquired enough money to buy ten such books, which would you recommend? Which ten books on the subject would you suggest that new teachers purchase for their personal libraries? Such questions are more limited versions of the old idea of deciding which ten books you would want if you were marooned on a desert island.

Abstract:
PurposeThis early grades lesson set for the age group of 4–8 years explores the concepts of diversity, inclusion and friendship, involving three young students who are recent immigrants. The lesson set uses two companion books. In the book I am New Here, three recently immigrated young children from Guatemala, Korea and Somalia step into and experience their new school in their new country, the USA. In the companion book Someone New, their classmates explore how to reach out to and become friends with these new peers. The companion books are a resource for this lesson set, as they portray typical young learners who are immigrants exploring their identities and sources of support and how their presence and experiences challenge their classmates to find ways to support them in their new environment.Design/methodology/approachStudents are guided to see themselves and others as unique individuals, with a range of abilities including the ability to speak different languages, to read and write in different ways so that they may initiate discussion and connect with classmates. Students occupy both the roles of new immigrant students and domestic students while they read the books, model how to interact with a new friend and represent their experiences in the lesson set.FindingsThe books promote young learners' interactions within and across groups. Both the domestic and immigrant students are encouraged to approach the experience of difference in school spaces as mutually beneficial, providing opportunities to learn more about self and others, as well as to develop a sense of inclusivity and friendship.Originality/valueSomeone New and I am New Here are companion books that together present a story of diversity, inclusion and friendship rendered in different perspectives. Efforts are made by three young students, who are immigrants from Guatemala, Korea and Somalia, and their classmates to understand and relate to each other. The books promote young learners’ interactions within and across groups.

Abstract:
This study reflects on theories and practices of scented/smelly books as a fact which could give new perspectives in writing for children and creating children’s books. This impact can be an alternative methodological tool for children’s learning at school. Smell has very high retention rate in the learning process that influences the memory of a story and the impact to children’s imagination and experience in the world around. This forgotten value at school textbooks can be re-examined from specialists. Scented books as a teaching strategy and a methodological tool reveal how children can represent memories and express themselves effectively in a language class with the help of using smelly books. In our study we expected children to remember the main or essential points as a bottom-line of story plots when scents were involved between the child and the book. Perfume literacy in children’s book and the e-book industry refer as theoretical components in our study and are described in detail. It is true that civilization has cost people a valuable sense. A nose alphabet could also arrange things in different perspectives for young children.

Abstract:
Textbooks receive focal attention in every educational setting. In 2013, the English text books used in Iranian schools were changed and new books, the Prospect series, were introduced. The older English text books are not used for teaching anymore. One of these was English One which was used for teaching the first grade at junior high school. As far as the researchers know, there was no previous research using this book in terms of gender from a semiotic point of view. Therefore, the researchers tried to investigate it in terms of social semiotics as defined by Kress and van Leeuwen (2006). Their findings showed that males are more often present in the images, and both genders are seen as collaborating with the readers of this book. Their findings also showed that both genders are trying to encourage the readers toward establishing communication by more often showing gaze towards each other in the images. This study has implication for students of linguistics, for course designers and for English teachers as well.

Abstract:
<p>The council for revitalization of education has submitted a proposal to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for educational reforms to make English language courses compulsory in the fifth and sixth grades. The majority of elementary school teachers are now worried and lacking in confidence to teach English, as they feel they are ill-equipped for their new role as language instructors. According to Keith Schoch’s article Picture Books across the Curriculum, picture books deserve a place in the upper elementary and middle school grades for a number of reasons: If chosen with consideration for the interests of the students and used in ways that are appropriate for learners, picture books can provide valuable opportunities of language-rich experiences and interactions. Thus, the present study firstly describes and analyses some of the challenges facing English education in Japan by relating to its wider social setting. Secondly, the study analyzes how teachers perceive they can promote language learning in their EFL classrooms through the medium of picture books. Thirdly, the study discusses the merits of using picture books in the upper elementary and middle school English education from the viewpoint of English language learning, and then investigates topics and themes of a picture book which illuminate some universal aspects of human condition. </p>

Abstract:
This study was designed to investigate the impact of family cultural capital on reading motivation and reading behavior among new immigrant children and non-immigrant children. This research used Chang and Wang's family cultural capital, reading motivation, and reading behavior questionnaire to conduct the survey. The target population of this study was students enrolled in fifth grade and sixth grade in elementary school in the fall of 2017 in Tainan, Taiwan. The sample include 414 students from new immigrant families and 422 students from non-immigrant families; the total number of individuals was 837. Structural equation modeling (SEM) analytical procedures were performed to test the hypothesized relationships. The results indicate that the seven latent variables were related to each other directly or indirectly. The main findings of this study are as follows: 1) family socioeconomic status significantly affects students' acquisition of family cultural capital; 2) family reading habits significantly affect students' reading motivation; 3) intrinsic reading motivation significantly affects students' reading behavior; and 4) external reading motivation shows no direct significant effect on reading time or the number of items read.

This dissertation examines the history of children's books in Brazil and France between the decades of 1920 and 1940 and its close relation to the education renovating movement in both countries; it focuses on the work of the Brazilian author Monteiro Lobato (1882-1948) and the French Paul Faucher (1898-1967), creator of the famous Père Castor albums. While keeping friendship relations with eminent educators of the Escola Nova [New School or Progressive Education] movement, both Lobato and Faucher carried out pioneering practices in children's books production. It is possible to notice a fundamental common aspect in the work of both authors: the presence of a pedagogical project underlying their editorial project. More than comparing common and distinctive points in the work of these two supporters of reading, the main objective here is to elucidate some aspects that contribute to these similarities and differences by identifying the factors that shape these elements of comparison in the context of the creation, dissemination and reception of their work. In this dissertation, I sought to examine what was the perception that Lobato and Faucher had about the Escola Nova movement, how their connection to the movement reflect in their books, which pathways each of them took and what were the results of the choices they have made. Are they mostly differences or similarities? In trying to answer these questions, the research sought to examine not only books, but also personal letters, journals, notes, sales reports, conference proceedings, and all sorts of printings that document the authors' activities and the relations they established with writers, editors, artists, intellectuals, politicians and educators. The conclusions I have reached point toward a similarity in the literary systems of Brazil and French in the 20s, 30s and 40s; they also indicate similar conceptions of childhood and education in Lobato and Faucher; in contrast, however, the findings also reveal differences in the methods used in the editorial and literary projects that are at the origin of their books<br>Doutorado<br>Literatura Geral e Comparada<br>Doutor em Teoria e História Literária

Education is one of the personal human rights of individuals. It is very valuable right for an indi-vidual or a whole society to be educated. This study has been done to know teachers’ views about problems and challenges that teachers face during teaching of mathematics text book in upper secondary As we know mathematics education is necessary for development of mental discipline and capacity. It helps student in critical thinking and increase their power of analyzing the world. In Afghanistan, post-conflict country educational bases have been destroyed by three decades war. There is need to improve education, especially, teachers’ education in order to improve mathematics teachers education in Afghanistan. A fact that we face with, because of thirty years of war, the teachers proficiency remained imbalance. Also Afghanistan remained back in educa-tion but new text book is the biggest change in education toward a good quality in education. For example in the past more subjects like math, algebra, geometry and etc. were taught individually, in many separate books but now these are incorporated into one book. In addition, each subject was taught by one teacher but now one teacher has to teach all of them alone. Statistics and probability are the new subjects in the new textbooks which were not in the curriculum in the past. The survey has not been made about the textbooks up to now. .Questionnaires was distributed to 70 teachers in different provinces. In this study for data collec-tion and gaining teacher view on this regard teacher participate from deferent provinces (Kabul Ningarhar or and Paktia ).It has been found that the new textbooks are better designed than the old textbooks and are based on the modern teaching and learning materials while the old text-books are designed on the old system of learning and teaching system. On the other hand, teach-ers like and prefer the new textbooks for students learning and they claim that new textbooks contain better mathematics knowledge and contents which are more useful for students learning.

Abstract:
Palavras-<br>Prefaces are nominated as all the introductory discourses produced for a determinate text. The historical, contextual and systematic links with the printed matter converted the prefaces in precious research sources to the history of books in all kinds of written culture. In this work, we analyze the history of the prefaces in scholastic publications in three moments of the Brazilian history: The Old Republic, The Age of Vargas and the Military Dictatorship. In this way prefaces, prologues, presentations, introductions and post-scripts, as well as other printed supports, became essential objects in understanding different forms of conceiving civism and to write about formation of citizens. By the prefaces it was possible to identify and analyze representations of idealisms and merits of democracy, republicans dreams and disappointments, as well as political projects and programs. As a preparation speech for reading, the analyzed prefaces made possible to run, from one side, the historical elements out side the book that overlated the more extensive social and political objectives of the auctorial action. On the other side made possible the understanding that the authors options were projected in the kind of language and discursive strategies found in the structure inside the book. They also allowed the comprehension of the plasticity in the origin which announces the citizen formation. With in prefaces, republican ideals, regional controversies, elements of the despotic democracy, positivism, Christianity, Marxism and many other forms of representing political practice have flowed. Such representations demanded for its self the primacy in schooling of themes as homeland, nation and citizenship making them prerequisites of the political action. Finally, analyzing the traditions of foreign manuals, didactic books, spelling books, encyclopedias and other kinds of scholar publications it was possible to conclude that the civic prefaces meant linking points between things of our world and the world of books.

Lewis, Elizabeth Faith. "Peter Guthrie Tait : new insights into aspects of his life and work : and associated topics in the history of mathematics." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/6330.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis I present new insights into aspects of Peter Guthrie Tait's life and work, derived principally from largely-unexplored primary source material: Tait's scrapbook, the Tait–Maxwell school-book and Tait's pocket notebook. By way of associated historical insights, I also come to discuss the innovative and far-reaching mathematics of the elusive Frenchman, C.-V. Mourey. P. G. Tait (1831–1901) F.R.S.E., Professor of Mathematics at the Queen's College, Belfast (1854–1860) and of Natural Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh (1860–1901), was one of the leading physicists and mathematicians in Europe in the nineteenth century. His expertise encompassed the breadth of physical science and mathematics. However, since the nineteenth century he has been unfortunately overlooked—overshadowed, perhaps, by the brilliance of his personal friends, James Clerk Maxwell (1831–1879), Sir William Rowan Hamilton (1805–1865) and William Thomson (1824–1907), later Lord Kelvin. Here I present the results of extensive research into the Tait family history. I explore the spiritual aspect of Tait's life in connection with The Unseen Universe (1875) which Tait co-authored with Balfour Stewart (1828–1887). I also reveal Tait's surprising involvement in statistics and give an account of his introduction to complex numbers, as a schoolboy at the Edinburgh Academy. A highlight of the thesis is a re-evaluation of C.-V. Mourey's 1828 work, La Vraie Théorie des quantités négatives et des quantités prétendues imaginaires, which I consider from the perspective of algebraic reform. The thesis also contains: (i) a transcription of an unpublished paper by Hamilton on the fundamental theorem of algebra which was inspired by Mourey and (ii) new biographical information on Mourey.

Abstract:
碩士<br>中華大學<br>科技管理學系<br>106<br>Due to recent demographic changes in Taiwan, the number of new residents increased continuously. Thus, the ratio of new resident students in schools also rose each year. Facing this problem, the New Taipei city government hoped to not only help those new resident students adapt to Taiwan’s society and culture, but also use this opportunity to learn about culture differences, in order to expand their global perspective. To achieve this goal, the New Taipei City government designed the “multi-cultural picture books”. They hoped that teachers can integrate this material into their teaching activities. Though this was the government’s idea, they also needed cooperation from the teachers. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the teachers’ intensions of use of the multi-cultural picture books of New Taipei City. The purposes of this study was to investigate whether the different background variables of public elementary school teachers in New Taipei City (including gender, age, education level, length of service in teaching, teaching position, participation of multi-cultural workshops, new residents in class) had significant effects on the perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, perceived interest, and intentions of use of the multi-cultural picture books of New Taipei City. Questionnaire survey method was conducted as the research method for this study. The research participants were public elementary school teachers in New Taipei City. Four hundred and ten questionnaires were passed out, and three hundred and seventy-nine effective questionnaires were collected. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson product-moment correlation, and multiple regression analysis. The findings of this study showed that four background variables of elementary school teachers (including teacher’s age, education level, teaching position, and school size) had significant differences on the four dimensions (perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, perceived interests, and intentions of use) of using the multi-cultural picture books of New Taipei City. There were also significant correlations between the four different dimensions. Perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and perceived interests were able to predict teachers’ intention to use those picture books, indicates that the intention level of elementary school teachers in New Taipei City to use the multi-cultural picture books of New Taipei City were above average.

Meanwhile, a total of 26 children studying at one elementary school are involved as in this study. The 26 children consist of 9, 8, and 9 low-, middle-, and high-grade students, respectively. The research was conducted with the researcher reading aloud the picture books first. And then children could read those picture books on their own before the researcher interviewed them. The results of the research are as below: 1. Children’s viewpoints on the “home country lives of new inhabitants” in picture books: Over 50% of the children could realize the differences of the culture of new inhabitants and concentrate on physical things. However, 1/3 of the children showed no specific response to the “home country lives of new inhabitants” in picture books. 2. Children’s perception of the “home country lives of new inhabitants” in picture books: Over 50% of the children accepted the culture of new inhabitants. 1/3 of the children were not willing to make friends with new inhabitants due to communication problems or eating habits, while not showing any sign of prejudice or discrimination. 3. Children’s personal experiences of the “home country lives of new inhabitants” in picture books: Over 50% of the children could relate their own experiences to their viewpoints on or perception of the culture of new inhabitants. However, 1/4 of the children had no personal experiences related to the “home country lives of new inhabitants” in picture books. 4. Children from different grades showed different levels of responses in the aspects of viewpoints on and personal experiences in the “home country lives of new inhabitants” in picture books. High-grade elementary school students’ responses to the “home country lives of new inhabitants” were more specific and detailed. But perception was not significantly influenced by their grades. According to the research results, this study proposed some suggestions regarding diversified cultural curriculums at school, creation of picture books, and future researches. Abstract:
碩士<br>國立政治大學<br>英語教學碩士在職專班<br>104<br>This research aims to investigate how the ninth graders’ perspectives towards the implementation of English electronic picture books in English class. In particular, it explores not only the affordance perceived by learners in the process of reading electronic English picture books but also observes learners’ cognitive and affective changes of English learning across time. Adopting a qualitative case study design, this research recruited two Taiwanese male ninth graders from one class in a private high school in New Taipei City taught by the teacher researcher. This class was taught how to read electronic picture books once a month for four months. Every reading class was divided into two parts: (1) in shared reading, the instructor guided reading through employing an electronic English picture book with distinct levels of multimedia features (a total of four picture books were used); (2) in extensive reading, the instructor provided leaners with websites where there were different electronic English picture books for learners to choose so that they could read materials autonomously. The data collected for the research included questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, stimulated recalls, student written feedback, and classroom observations. The important findings are listed as follows. First, learners’ English was facilitated through interaction with the instructor, the peers, and the reading materials and assessment. Second, through the interdependent function of the three affordances, learners have changed in the presence of cognitive domain (phonological awareness, auditory impact, lexical development, and trans-literacy) and affective domain (interest, motivation, confidence and autonomy). Although there were positive and negative changes in the reading process of the implementation of electronic English picture books with different multimedia levels, the three affordances functioned consistently, fostering English learning. Based on the research findings, six pedagogical suggestions are provided. First, the two participants advised to incorporate electronic picture books English reading into English curriculum so that learners would have more chances for being immersed in electronic English picture books when learning English in regular courses. Second, it is necessary for instructors to provide learners with electronic English picture books close to their real life and corresponding to their levels, which is helpful in increasing learners’ opportunities of English reading and learning as well. Third, the instructors were advised to change their roles according to learners’ learning conditions. Fourth, the instructors should provide learners more self-reading time in class. Fifth, they could arrange seats according to leaners’ English proficiency and learning attitude. Sixth, the instructors could activate teaching activities with electronic English picture books, such as small-group discussions, competitions, role-play, reader’s theater, and dramas.

Abstract:
Teacher candidates enrolled in a Civic Science for Elementary Schools course at a public university in a Midwestern state developed children's books on ecological diversity and sustainability. The children's books were analyzed qualitatively using constant comparative analyses that involved analyzing each book's images and text for evidence of key themes. Analyses demonstrated children's book creation as an instructional pedagogy and ecological diversity and sustainability as curricular content powerful to enhance ENL student engagement, identification, and learning in a new cultural, linguistic, and ecological setting. Book creation involves narrative and visual explanation of key concepts accessible to ENL learners. Ecological diversity and sustainability are values shared across regions and can enhance ENL student identification with a new school context, while valuing their knowledge funds. The public library emerged as a supportive glocal civic space to build pedagogical bridges among teacher candidates, elementary schools, and the shared community resource of children's books.

Abstract:
When the post-world war two ‘baby boomer' generation reached school age, education changed. Massive increases in student numbers required changes to teacher education, enormous investment in new schools and changes in pedagogy. Each succeeding generation has been different, and of necessity, education has changed to reflect the needs and aspirations of the new generation. Generation Y students are now in higher education, the first Generation Z students will soon be entering higher education. Both groups are showing signs of being different to their seniors. This difference implies changes to higher education learning. Compounding the need for Generation Y and Generation Z instigated changes to higher education has been the rapid onset of new forms of technologically infused learning, some generated by an industry desperate to maintain its influence on education as the market for paper-based books and journals declines, others generated by the ubiquitous nature of everyday life technological innovations such as social media, and more recently, the widespread availability of tuition fee-free MOOCS. This chapter will chart the generational and technological changes that are likely to increasingly demand changes to learning in schooling and higher education. Possible future change scenarios are also suggested.

Abstract:
Through an exploration of three vignettes, the authors share innovative ways young learners and their teachers are responding to children's literature using digital tools in the context of new literacies. In the first example, primary grade students use digital tools to gain agency in their literacy practices as part of project-based learning within a STEAM curriculum. In the second, struggling readers in an after-school program integrate traditional and out-of-school literacies to produce authentic literacy products outside the constraints of standards and established curricula. Finally, an example from a teacher education program shows how the next generation of teachers can become leaders in the use of new literacies through their own experiential learning. Despite the differences in context and content of each vignette, all three demonstrate strong use of literacies pedagogy to guide selection of digital tools for the creation and consumption of text.

Abstract:
Even if a school or district has done a good job providing thorough information on its website or has made efforts to connect online with incoming families, that work might be in vain if the school doesn’t feel inviting once the students and parents arrive. As parents have shared, that first reception that families receive when they walk into a school or district office can determine whether they view the new school community as welcoming or unwelcoming. Schools—as well as individual teachers—should have procedures in place for when someone new walks in the door. For example, previous work on schools serving military children showed that many Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) schools ask parents to wait a day after enrollment before their child starts class. This gives the teacher and the students in a class a chance to prepare for the new student. They get a desk, books, and other materials ready—thus allowing the new student to feel less as if he or she is a disruption. Clearly, DoDEA schools are accustomed to welcoming new students all the time, but it’s a practice that could be implemented in any school. This chapter focuses on how to make early face-to-face interactions with new students and parents a positive experience. Every new family in a school needs that person who can say, “If I don’t know the answer, I will find out who does.” The approaches described here not only create an initial welcoming atmosphere, but also provide families with links should they need more information. Many school districts have a central location where families can receive information on the district and learn about the enrollment process, school choice options, community resources, and additional services. Welcome centers tend to be more common in a school district that handles registration at the central office level, instead of in each local school, and especially if the district serves an immigrant population. In addition to providing information on registration, these centers often provide information on other community agencies and services that families might need, such as housing, food assistance, child care, and after-school programs.

Abstract:
This article shows the results obtained from the creation of some educational cards for primary school pupils on the topic of the food waste prevention. The collaboration between designers and experts in the educational field was fundamental for this project: we combined the communicative and design skills of the designer with the didactics knowledge of the educators. The activities have been created on the basis of the experiential methodology, the pupils feeling themselves the protagonist of the activities, combining the traditional educational activities, also trough cross-learning of good ecological practices. The proposed activities explore the life cycle of an aliment from when it is purchased by the consumer until it is disposed of, analysing in which stages the consumer wastes food. The exercises were created to understand how to avoid or reduce food waste in those specific phases. The result of the project is composed of two different books containing the educational cards, one for teachers and families with basic information on exercises and the other one for students containing the exercises. The final objective of the educational cards is to sensitize students and adults around them on the food waste problem.

Abstract:
We have been offering conceptual design courses to graduate level mechanical engineering students. The courses are taught at three different graduate schools; Kyushu Institute of Technology, Sophia University, and The University of Tokyo. The mechanisms of course offering are different among these three schools, however, the underlying theme is the same. That is to identify a problem that the students want to solve and work in groups to come up with creative solutions. The students first go through sessions to sharpen their sense of feeling inconveniences. We then emphasize the importance of properly stating the functional requirement for their yet-to-build solution. Engineering students often struggle with this first stage. Once they set the goal, the course teaches brainstorming, Design Record Graph, and prototyping. Last year, we experimented with a final assignment of producing posters of their new products. The posters were collected and presented at an adult conference. The conference participants cast votes for their preferred posters. The top three winners received book cards to purchase books. This poster competition gave the students high incentives to produce good design proposals. The winning factor was not just technical supremacy but the votes were strongly affected by the solution presentation on the posters. It provided a good opportunity to teach engineering students that technology alone is not always the most important factor in winning businesses.

Abstract:
In today’s world, it is critical to continually improve and develop new educational practices. Compared to developed and developing countries around the world, especially in science, mathematics, and engineering, the United States is falling behind. One of the most prominent reasons is the lack of interest in these subjects. In order to reverse this trend, it is important to develop new ways to creatively spark interest in engineering and natural sciences early on in a student’s educational career. The scope of this project was to develop a children’s book that introduced mechanical dissections. Along with the book, an in class presentation was developed for early elementary students in Kindergarten and 1st grade, with the goal of inspiring interest in engineering as a whole. This presentation was then used in local elementary school classrooms to gauge how such a program would fare in a typical elementary level classroom. Overall the project produced successful results. Not only were the students intrigued and excited to see the presentation, but they also learned more of the information than was originally expected. Through different media, the students were able to explore and question how and why a household appliance worked. This interaction with engineering concepts at a young age could prove to be very beneficial in the future.

Abstract:
This study defined morphological importance of cultural heritage assets and formation of Egba-Ake town. Cultural heritages include man’s physical imaginative products which can be touched and seen include buildings, crafts, tools, ivory, cowries, paintings, textiles, pestles, mortars, food, wooden objects, tombs &amp; grave goods, temples, dresses, pottery &amp; potsherd pavements, monuments, books and artifacts. Morphology are factors that influence city/community formation which are determined by synthetic and natural determinants. Cultural heritage assets are whatever is valued by people today that was also cherished by former generations. This research explored the importance of cultural heritage assets in relation to urban fabrics formation of Egba-Ake. Qualitative method was adopted in this study, in-depth interviews and personal observation was used for data collection while Nvivo words tree and satellite imagery was used to analyze collected data. Ake’s palace and Itoku market is located at the center around which the Egba-Ake evolved. Ake’s Palace (political and cultural hub of the town) and Itoku market (the economic heritage of the town) was used to preserve various aspects of Egba-Ake cultural heritage. Ela festival (new yam festival) is annually celebrated cultural activity in Egba-Ake. This finding is relevant to policy makers as it allows the support of potential common structures for heritage administration in Egba-Ake. Effect of heritage in EgbaAke morphology is the new palace of Alake (the cultural ruler) of Egba-Ake were renovated and new once built a few years ago with modern architectural designs, furniture and fittings. This has made the Alake’s Palace to meet ‘international standards’. Social amenities and infrastructures like electricity supply, water systems, hospitals, good roads, administrative offices, schools; communication networks, etc. are now a major feature in Egba-Ake town. Further studies will enhance the implementation issues which may arise from the creation of a framework for cultural heritage management, with emphasis on risk management and risk reduction of cultural heritage.

Abstract:
Product development has been approached by linear methods that apply to any design problem without concern of ambient variables. In this approach, we will find a new matrix method that can deliver a basic path in which the designer can begin his journey, but adaptable to accept ambient variables. Nikola Tesla in his book “The Strange Life of Nikola Tesla” (1914) told us: “Thus I have been led unconsciously to evolve what I consider a new method of materializing inventive concepts and ideas, which is radially opposite to the purely experimental and is in my opinion ever so much more expeditious and efficient. The moment one constructs a device to carry into practice a crude idea, he finds himself unavoidably engrossed with the details of the apparatus. As he goes on improving and reconstructing, his force of concentration diminishes and he loses sight of the great underlying principle. Results may be obtained, but always at the sacrifice of quality. My method is different. I do not rush into actual work. When I get an idea, I start at once building it up in my imagination. I change the construction, make improvements, and operate the device in my mind. It is immaterial to me whether I run my turbine in thought or test it in my shop. I even note if it is out of balance. There is no difference whatever; the results are the same. In this way, I can rapidly develop and perfect a conception without touching anything. When I have gone as far as to embody in the invention every possible improvement I can think of and see no fault anywhere, I put into concrete form this final product of my brain. Invariably my device works as I conceived that it should, and the experiment comes out exactly as I planned it. In twenty years, there has not been a single exception. Why should it be otherwise? Engineering, electrical and mechanical, is positive in results. There is scarcely a subject that cannot be examined beforehand, from the available theoretical and practical data.” Tesla’s approach to design tells us to base the creative energy in the conceptual design. For a designer to get the best results, the method suggests three steps: Preparation, Exploration, and Conceptual Design. In preparation, the designer must open his mind and learn how to handle his creative muscle, exploration will guide him thru the path of knowledge thru science, and technology, and when he has all the tools on hand will begin the conceptual design. Once a conceptual design is acquired with the details Tesla suggested, nearly anyone with modeling skills can make the detailed design. The aim of this work is to explain in detail the method which is proposed, and to show a testing of the method. The creativity test selected was the Creativity Styles Questionnaire-Revised (CSQ-R) applied to groups of students of engineering, and design schools which were confronted to a design challenge using this method, and to a control group who has never been in contact with the method.

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: This paper provides the results of the preliminary analysis of the findings of an ongoing study that seeks to examine the social media use, cultural and political awareness, civic engagement, issue prioritization, and social activism of Gen Z students enrolled at four different institutional types located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. The aim of this study is to look at the group as a whole as well as compare findings across populations. The institutional types under consideration include a mid-sized majority serving or otherwise referred to as a traditionally white institution (TWI) located in a small coastal city on the Atlantic Ocean, a small Historically Black University (HBCU) located in a rural area, a large community college located in a county that is a mixture of rural and suburban and which sits on the border of Maryland and Pennsylvania, and graduating high school students enrolled in career and technical education (CTE) programs in a large urban area. This exploration is purposed to examine the behaviors and expectations of Gen Z students within a representative American region during a time of tremendous turmoil and civil unrest in the United States. Background: Over 74 million strong, Gen Z makes up almost one-quarter of the U.S. population. They already outnumber any current living generation and are the first true digital natives. Born after 1996 and through 2012, they are known for their short attention spans and heightened ability to multi-task. Raised in the age of the smart phone, they have been tethered to digital devices from a young age with most having the preponderance of their childhood milestones commemorated online. Often called Zoomers, they are more racially and ethnically diverse than any previous generation and are on track to be the most well-educated generation in history. Gen Zers in the United States have been found in the research to be progressive and pro-government and viewing increasing racial and ethnic diversity as positive change. Finally, they are less likely to hold xenophobic beliefs such as the notion of American exceptionalism and superiority that have been popular with by prior generations. The United States has been in a period of social and civil unrest in recent years with concerns over systematic racism, rampant inequalities, political polarization, xenophobia, police violence, sexual assault and harassment, and the growing epidemic of gun violence. Anxieties stirred by the COVID-19 pandemic further compounded these issues resulting in a powder keg explosion occurring throughout the summer of 2020 and leading well into 2021. As a result, the United States has deteriorated significantly in the Civil Unrest Index falling from 91st to 34th. The vitriol, polarization, protests, murders, and shootings have all occurred during Gen Z’s formative years, and the limited research available indicates that it has shaped their values and political views. Methodology: The Mid-Atlantic region is a portion of the United States that exists as the overlap between the northeastern and southeastern portions of the country. It includes the nation’s capital, as well as large urban centers, small cities, suburbs, and rural enclaves. It is one of the most socially, economically, racially, and culturally diverse parts of the United States and is often referred to as the “typically American region.” An electronic survey was administered to students from 2019 through 2021 attending a high school dual enrollment program, a minority serving institution, a majority serving institution, and a community college all located within the larger mid-Atlantic region. The survey included a combination of multiple response, Likert scaled, dichotomous, open ended, and ordinal questions. It was developed in the Survey Monkey system and reviewed by several content and methodological experts in order to examine bias, vagueness, or potential semantic problems. Finally, the survey was pilot tested prior to implementation in order to explore the efficacy of the research methodology. It was then modified accordingly prior to widespread distribution to potential participants. The surveys were administered to students enrolled in classes taught by the authors all of whom are educators. Participation was voluntary, optional, and anonymous. Over 800 individuals completed the survey with just over 700 usable results, after partial completes and the responses of individuals outside of the 18-24 age range were removed. Findings: Participants in this study overwhelmingly were users of social media. In descending order, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, WhatsApp, LinkedIn and Tik Tok were the most popular social media services reported as being used. When volume of use was considered, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube and Twitter were the most cited with most participants reporting using Instagram and Snapchat multiple times a day. When asked to select which social media service they would use if forced to choose just one, the number one choice was YouTube followed by Instagram and Snapchat. Additionally, more than half of participants responded that they have uploaded a video to a video sharing site such as YouTube or Tik Tok. When asked about their familiarity with different technologies, participants overwhelmingly responded that they are “very familiar” with smart phones, searching the Web, social media, and email. About half the respondents said that they were “very familiar” with common computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite or Google Suite with another third saying that they were “somewhat familiar.” When asked about Learning Management Systems (LMS) like Blackboard, Course Compass, Canvas, Edmodo, Moodle, Course Sites, Google Classroom, Mindtap, Schoology, Absorb, D2L, itslearning, Otus, PowerSchool, or WizIQ, only 43% said they were “very familiar” with 31% responding that they were “somewhat familiar.” Finally, about half the students were either “very” or “somewhat” familiar with operating systems such as Windows. A few preferences with respect to technology in the teaching and learning process were explored in the survey. Most students (85%) responded that they want course announcements and reminders sent to their phones, 76% expect their courses to incorporate the use of technology, 71% want their courses to have course websites, and 71% said that they would rather watch a video than read a book chapter. When asked to consider the future, over 81% or respondents reported that technology will play a major role in their future career. Most participants considered themselves “informed” or “well informed” about current events although few considered themselves “very informed” or “well informed” about politics. When asked how they get their news, the most common forum reported for getting news and information about current events and politics was social media with 81% of respondents reporting. Gen Z is known to be an engaged generation and the participants in this study were not an exception. As such, it came as no surprise to discover that, in the past year more than 78% of respondents had educated friends or family about an important social or political issue, about half (48%) had donated to a cause of importance to them, more than a quarter (26%) had participated in a march or rally, and a quarter (26%) had actively boycotted a product or company. Further, about 37% consider themselves to be a social activist with another 41% responding that aren’t sure if they would consider themselves an activist and only 22% saying that they would not consider themselves an activist. When asked what issues were important to them, the most frequently cited were Black Lives Matter (75%), human trafficking (68%), sexual assault/harassment/Me Too (66.49%), gun violence (65.82%), women’s rights (65.15%), climate change (55.4%), immigration reform/deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) (48.8%), and LGBTQ+ rights (47.39%). When the schools were compared, there were only minor differences in social media use with the high school students indicating slightly more use of Tik Tok than the other participants. All groups were virtually equal when it came to how informed they perceived themselves about current events and politics. Consensus among groups existed with respect to how they get their news, and the community college and high school students were slightly more likely to have participated in a march, protest, or rally in the last 12 months than the university students. The community college and high school students were also slightly more likely to consider themselves social activists than the participants from either of the universities. When the importance of the issues was considered, significant differences based on institutional type were noted. Black Lives Matter (BLM) was identified as important by the largest portion of students attending the HBCU followed by the community college students and high school students. Less than half of the students attending the TWI considered BLM an important issue. Human trafficking was cited as important by a higher percentage of students attending the HBCU and urban high school than at the suburban and rural community college or the TWI. Sexual assault was considered important by the majority of students at all the schools with the percentage a bit smaller from the majority serving institution. About two thirds of the students at the high school, community college, and HBCU considered gun violence important versus about half the students at the majority serving institution. Women’s rights were reported as being important by more of the high school and HBCU participants than the community college or TWI. Climate change was considered important by about half the students at all schools with a slightly smaller portion reporting out the HBCU. Immigration reform/DACA was reported as important by half the high school, community college, and HBCU participants with only a third of the students from the majority serving institution citing it as an important issue. With respect to LGBTQ rights approximately half of the high school and community college participants cited it as important, 44.53% of the HBCU students, and only about a quarter of the students attending the majority serving institution. Contribution and Conclusion: This paper provides a timely investigation into the mindset of generation Z students living in the United States during a period of heightened civic unrest. This insight is useful to educators who should be informed about the generation of students that is currently populating higher education. The findings of this study are consistent with public opinion polls by Pew Research Center. According to the findings, the Gen Z students participating in this study are heavy users of multiple social media, expect technology to be integrated into teaching and learning, anticipate a future career where technology will play an important role, informed about current and political events, use social media as their main source for getting news and information, and fairly engaged in social activism. When institutional type was compared the students from the university with the more affluent and less diverse population were less likely to find social justice issues important than the other groups. Recommendations for Practitioners: During disruptive and contentious times, it is negligent to think that the abounding issues plaguing society are not important to our students. Gauging the issues of importance and levels of civic engagement provides us crucial information towards understanding the attitudes of students. Further, knowing how our students gain information, their social media usage, as well as how informed they are about current events and political issues can be used to more effectively communicate and educate. Recommendations for Researchers: As social media continues to proliferate daily life and become a vital means of news and information gathering, additional studies such as the one presented here are needed. Additionally, in other countries facing similarly turbulent times, measuring student interest, awareness, and engagement is highly informative. Impact on Society: During a highly contentious period replete with a large volume of civil unrest and compounded by a global pandemic, understanding the behaviors and attitudes of students can help us as higher education faculty be more attuned when it comes to the design and delivery of curriculum. Future Research This presentation presents preliminary findings. Data is still being collected and much more extensive statistical analyses will be performed.
