Abstract:
A different name than English literature, ‘Anglo-Indian Literature’, was given to the body of literature in English that emerged on account of the British interaction with India unlike the case with their interaction with America or Australia or New Zealand. Even the Indians’ contributions (translations as well as creative pieces in English) were classed under the caption ‘Anglo-Indian’ initially but later a different name, ‘Indo-Anglian’, was conceived for the growing variety and volume of writings in English by the Indians. However, unlike the former the latter has not found a favour with the compilers of English dictionaries. With the passage of time the fine line of demarcation drawn on the basis of subject matter and author’s point of view has disappeared and currently even Anglo-Indians’ writings are classed as ‘Indo-Anglian’. Besides contemplating on various connotations of the term ‘Indo-Anglian’ the article discusses the related issues such as: the etymology of the term, fixing the name of its coiner and the date of its first use. In contrast to the opinions of the historians and critics like K R S Iyengar, G P Sarma, M K Naik, Daniela Rogobete, Sachidananda Mohanty, Dilip Chatterjee and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak it has been brought to light that the term ‘Indo-Anglian’ was first used in 1880 by James Payn to refer to the Indians’ writings in English rather pejoratively. However, Iyengar used it in a positive sense though he himself gave it up soon. The reasons for the wide acceptance of the term, sometimes also for the authors of the sub-continent, by the members of academia all over the world, despite its rejection by Sahitya Akademi (the national body of letters in India), have also been contemplated on. Abstract:
The Canary Islands (Spain) have always been in close contact with the Anglo-Saxon world, which has had important consequences for the economy but has also meant a significant influence at the socio-cultural, linguistic and literary levels. A review of the English bibliography on the Canaries reveals, among other aspects, a tendency in most authors to use Hispanicisms and Canarianisms in their texts. This article offers a record of the Spanish and Canarian words which appear in a corpus of fourteen works taken from an extensive bibliography, namely twelve travel books and two tourist guides published between 1851 and 1917. Besides providing an overview of the studies on Hispanicisms in English, this paper’s main aim is to highlight the contribution of Canarian Spanish to the enrichment of the vocabulary of the English language by checking which of the Hispanicisms in our corpus which are actually Canarianisms have been included in the lexical repertoire of the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary on Historical Principles (2007).

Abstract:
Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the making of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). It considers the claim of language sciences historian Hans Aarsleff that the lexicography of the OED depends entirely on Liddell and Scott’s Greek-English Lexicon. The story of the relationship between Liddell and Scott and the OED, which was to be published as A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles (NED) and then came to be known from the 1890s onwards as the OED falls into three parts. The first concerns the place of Liddell and Scott in the thought of the founders of the NED/OED project in the late 1850s and early 1860s. The second concerns the Lexicon’s place in the thought and practice of the founding editor of the printed dictionary, James Murray, from the late 1870s onwards. The third concerns the relationship between editions of Liddell and Scott and of the OED in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
