Background and aims – During a survey of the soil diatom flora of the sub-Antarctic islands in the southern Indian Ocean, an unknown small-celled naviculoid taxon was discovered living in small cracks in cliffs bordering the ocean. The taxon showed a set of morphological features only found in the genus Microcostatus. However, the unknown taxon could not be identified using the currently available literature. Methods – Using both light microscopical and scanning electron microscopical techniques, the morphology of the unknown Microcostatus taxon was documented.

Abstract:
Taxol®, an important anticancer drug, was first isolated in extremely low yield from the bark of the western yew, Taxus brevifolia. The clinical utility of Taxol has prompted a tremendous effort to obtain this complex molecule synthetically. Due to the chemical complexity of Taxol, its commercial production by total synthesis is not likely to be economical. Another natural product, 10-deacetyl baccatin III, is readily available in higher yield. Several methods have been reported for the synthesis of Taxol by coupling baccatin III and the N-benzoyl-β-phenylisoserine side chain. A new method

Abstract This chapter discusses two species models, which are diametrically opposed. The first, often called the 'biological species concept', defines species in terms of 'reproductive isolation', convinced that species arise when subsets of a population are split off and remain geographically isolated over evolutionary time. If and when such new species are reunited with their founder population, interbreeding does not occur, or if it does, infertile progeny result. Hence, from the biological species concept, natural selection is a primary agent of change and directly selects for new species.

ABSTRACT

Currently, many small Army ground robots have mobility configurations containing tracks with sets of dual or quad flipper configurations. Many of these robots include the iRobot PackBot, Talon, and Dragon Runner. While the preceding robotic designs have allowed these robots to navigate over obstacles and across low traction environments, an increasing need for agile robotic platforms in complex environments involving subterranean and urban structure missions will be critical in the future. Therefore, a new mobility system for dismounted ground robot

Abstract:
The Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Reauthorization Act of 2006 mandat¬ed the research and management of the nation’s deep-sea coral resources through establishment of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administra¬tion’s Deep Sea Coral Research and Technology Program. The challenge for Alaska was daunting, where expansive, world-class fisheries often coincided with extraordinarily rich coral habitats for a high-latitude region. The first chal¬lenge was to inventory known locations of deep-sea corals. Many coral records and some museum collections existed from Alaska, but

Abstract:
Along transects and within boxplots, several ponds have experienced significant changes in macrophyte species composition since 1995, while others have remained relatively unchanged. In 2020 new occurrences of Phragmites australis (common reed) were documented in Duck (a single plant, which was immediately removed), Gull, and Higgins ponds. Three state-listed rare species that occur in CACO kettle ponds were not found in 2020. These included Sabatia kennedyanna (Plymouth rose gentian) (found in 2016 at Great-T), Drosera filiformis (threadleaf sundew) (found in 2016 at Great-W) and Sagittaria t
