Abstract:
Abstract The question of authorship usually dominates discussions of the states of the Pastoral Epistles in the New Testament canon. A number of factors have often been suggested as important to consider: chronology, epistolary format, style, content, and theology. This paper's concern is not ultimately to adjudicate the issue of authorship, but to examine some of the evidence, and then to raise some questions regarding canon that are suggested by the conclusions.

An astronomical table found in al-Khwarizmi’s ninth century CE treatise, related to the Jewish calendar, is analysed in detail. The analysis is used to establish the evidence that until the last centuries of the first millennium CE, the most important events in Jewish history described in the Masoretic text of the Bible were believed to have occurred simultaneously with the reappearances of new moons at the same celestial longitudes. The astronomical solar year of 365.25 days, in use from the first Millennium BCE throughout most parts of the first Millennium CE, and a mean lunar month of 29.5

Abstract The question of whether or not Papias recorded anything about John’s Gospel has garnered a lot of attention in the scholarly realms of New Testament and Patristics alike. Most notably, Charles E. Hill has recently argued that a portion of Eusebius’ testimony (HE 3.24.5-13) on the origins of the Gospel of John derives from the record of Papias. Aspects of Hill’s proposal are largely convincing, particularly the links he draws between Eusebius’ testimony and other writers who knew the Papian tradition. However, Hill has overestimated the influence of Papias on Eusebius’ account and miss

This article offers a comprehensive analysis of the reference to ‘the tenth hour’ in John 1:39, a detail frequently dismissed as minor or incidental. The study identifies three principal interpretative approaches: (1) literary or narrative readings, which view the hour as a marker of eyewitness memory, narrative precision, or structural closure; (2) temporal-pragmatic interpretations, which link the hour to historical chronology, social customs (e.g., hospitality, Sabbath observance), or practical details of the disciples’ encounter with Jesus; and (3) symbolic-theological interpretations, wh

I remember little specific about the primal urge to collect these lists, but I remember enough to recall that I was entirely naive at the beginning. I wanted exotic names, exotic places, and exotic dates. Most of all I wanted dates. It did not disturb me in the least when I found out that Arakan was founded in 2666 BC, and that a co

There have been some shorter publications and recently a monograph with a catalogue raisonné of Wouwerman. The 1993 article discussed roughly two dozen dated works. In addition there are a few references to dated paintings in old sale catalogues. Among these was a Calvary, known to be dated 1651. This painting has recently been rediscovered (fig. i). In this article, I examine the religious concept of mystical marriage between God and believers in the context of biblical bridal theology. I discuss its scriptural basis in the Old and New Testaments and their doctrinal disputes. I then describe how David Berg, the self-declared end-time prophet and founder of the notorious Children of God, twisted those scriptures to formulate his perverted version of Christian bridal theology. I present the chronology of sexual doctrines in the Children of God, later known as The Family. I show how Berg gradually began to groom his followers to accept extra
