Abstract:
The authors examine the materials of the American press of 1931 devoted to finding answers to the question of the fault of Japan or China in the conflict. Analysis of the US press reveals a complex and controversial information situation. 1941 was a period of gradual revival of the interest of journalists, editors and politicians in the problem of Sino-Japanesewar. US journalists had come to understanding the new outlines of the geopolitical picture of the world; they had realized that there are at least two global approaches to the issue of the culprits of the conflict (Chinese and Japanese) and that these approaches directly affect the understanding of the new role of the United States in the world.

Many companies choose to position themselves in New York. The city is one of the main cities when it comes to advertising. The competition is strong and for new companies, it is hard to survive on the market.

In our thesis we have investigated how Swedish people, who open new advertising agencies in New York, should market themselves to be successful on the market in New York.

To gain as much information as possible about this subject, we traveled to New York and interviewed three advertising agencies, who were started by Swedes, and also the Consulate General of Sweden, and Swedish Trade Council.

Our investigation resulted in that the best way to be successful on the American market is to differentiate your work from what the market has to offer. By doing this potential customers may find your work interesting and thereby chose to work with your company.

The "skyscraper problem" challenged the thought and practice of civic designers and architects prior to World War I. It referred to the incompatibility of City Beautiful principles with economically propelled land development, and to the contradiction between the notion of architecture as an art and the skyscraper's programmatic and technical requirements. Civic designers in New York had difficulty accommodating the skyscraper in their large-scale plans. They also found that it intruded on their vision for the business street, hindered their attempts to plan City Hall Park as New York's civic center, and created a chaotic skyline. Bruce Price, Louis Sullivan, Thomas Hastings, Cyrus L.W. Eidlitz, and other architects suggested alternative proposals for subjecting the skyscraper to the constraints of design . Prior to the design of the Woolworth Building, however, architectural critics did not unanimously endorse any single approach. Frank Woolworth chose a site for his proposed headquarters at the intersection of City Hall Park, New York's civic center, with lower Broadway, the spine of its business district . Woolworth commissioned Cass Gilbert to design the Woolworth Building in 1910. Gilbert shared the City Beautiful vision of McKim, Mead & White and Daniel Burnham. He also accepted the skyscraper's pragmatic requirements. Woolworth intended his headquarters to function as a speculative office building, but also to look like a civic institution. The imagery of a civic institution would represent the capitol of his commercial "empire" as well as display his civic-mindedness, wealth, and cosmopolitanism. The Woolworth Building's siting at New York's civic center, its composition, its arcade, and its sculptural and mural decoration identified it with the prevailing concept of the civic building. The soaring vertical piers of its exterior recalled Gilbert's earlier design for the West Street Building, which was influenced by the functionalist ideas of Louis Sullivan. The Woolworth Building convinced critics that a suitable architectural expression could be found for the skyscraper. Zoning reformers regarded it as a benign skyscraper. Contemporary observers attuned to City Beautiful aesthetic principles thought that the Woolworth Building strengthened the order and image of New York's civic center and enhanced the view of the city from afar.

This study examines the reuse potential of industrial land and infrastructure left abandoned or otherwise underutilized. The goal of this study is to open discussion and dialogue into such cases in North American cities that currently are liabilities and offer guidelines and methods for approaching preservation and reuse of such properties in a manner that contributes to community health, safety and welfare while maintaining historical character and significance.Abandoned or underutilized industrial land and infrastructure often pose significant environmental, safety, and land-use liability issues for municipalities. The application of creative reuse ideas centered on the notion of preserving industrial character, while creating new housing and recreation options for citizens is a major opportunity for communities struggling to cope with the negative aspects of these properties.The design project portion of this study was performed as part of an `ideas competition' conducted in 2003 by the `Friends of The High Line,' a not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving a 1.5 mile stretch of abandoned, elevated rail bed in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan Borough, New York City.

Abstract:
“Path and Place” is the design of an ‘infill’ building, primarily residential, on a vacant site in New York City. The central concern was an attempt to satisfy the elusive criteria for a home as a special place. Secondarily, it was important enhance the community with a lively place. Emphasis was placed on access to outdoor areas such as the courtyards, roof gardens, and balconies. ln these areas. it is possible to have a range of interaction among residents and neighbors. One may be an observer of the public scene, or a participant in a shared garden, or a shopper in a public market. The scale of the project is compatible with mid-rise apartment buildings surrounding the site. The structure reflects that it is built over a railroad cut which runs at an angle to the street grid. Construction is of repetitive pre-cast concrete load-bearing walls and concrete slab floors. Double-thick walls are used not only to carry utilities, but to separate one residential unit from another both physically and symbolically. There are 56 apartments varying in size from studio to large work/live units. The ground floor areas contain shops, a restaurant and a retail greenhouse. A second building is planned for the adjacent vacant site, to function as a research facility for urban agriculture. Both buildings contain courtyards—the residential one open and the research facility’s covered—which encourage pedestrian circulation from one main street to another. The roofs are used as gardens for the residents and the research facility.

Abstract:
Many critical issues in today's international commercial arbitration are unsettled. The purpose of this research is to study how the New York Convention shall be reformed or evolved on a jurisprudential basis. The New York Convention to a certain extent is a legal discourse with some crucial norms such as party autonomy and the split of powers (involving judicial review and sovereignty). Social, historical, economic and cultural factors affect the formation and application of norms in this discourse. With this in mind, the disciplines of law, sociology, and economics will be adopted occasionally. Darwinian legal theory and game theory are two major analytic approaches. There are six chapters in this dissertation. The purpose, task and methodologies of this research are outlined in Chapter 1. No research on arbitration would be complete without some discussion of the historical context, which can help to explore the differences between different times and show the evolution of critical norms and theories. The discussion concerning Darwinian legal theory and the evolution of the New York Convention is in Chapter 2. The theory can be a tool to explain the future development of the New York Convention in a changing legal environment. Game theory is often used to study such legal phenomena as jurisdictional competition and legal harmonisation. The basic idea is that states act in their self-interest like private parties in the game, which requires a "federalism" system in place to harmonise self-interest-oriented national rules. Under the New York Convention, the enforcement of vacated arbitral awards involve multiple states and naturally touches upon the actions these states may take. Game theory is used in Chapter 3 to study the possibility of harmonising national rules in the trend of de-localisation and globalisation. The modern arbitration has become more legalistic. The business community desire applicable rules and procedures more business-oriented and simpler than those used by national courts. Instead of rigid national laws, the business community prefers the stability and predictability offered by law merchant or lex mercatoria. Historical and neo-economic studies of lex mercatoria are offered in Chapter 4 to demonstrate the necessity of recognising lex mercatoria in practice. Public policy is a critical concept in the New York Convention. Apart from the arbitrability and public policy review in the enforcement procedure, Chapter 5 tries to explore the possibility of framing "normative" public policy on the basis of game theory. States are the key actor in implementing public policy. Thus, the role and function of the states in the era of globalisation will be studied as well by reference to the neo-economic theories. A conclusion is set out in Chapter 6.

With the women's movement of the 1960s, more career opportunities opened to women. Women now had the opportunity to work fulltime at jobs that were once held by men only. Accordingly, female reporters became a larger part of the newsroom, but male and female reporters were not being treated equally. For example, female reporters were assigned news topics that included human interest and education, and male reporters were assigned stories dealing with war and politics. Past research has examined bylines of small, medium, and large newspapers and the news topics male and female reporters have covered.The present study is a content analysis examining the years 1965, 1975, 1985, 1995, and 2005 of the New York Times. The study examined male and female bylines, along with topics of news stories, sources used by male and female reporters, and collective sources. The findings suggest that female reporters are making some strides in the newspaper business. Stories by female reporters more often appear on the front page currently than in the past. However, male reporters are writing about "feminine topics," such as education, and human interest. Lastly, female reporters use more female sources in stories than their male counterparts.

Abstract:
<p>The success story of prestressed concrete is based on the utilization of high‐strength prestressing steel which enables large compressive forces to be introduced into the concrete. However, thin‐walled concrete structures often require considerable thicknesses for the sole purpose of preventing corrosion of the steel elements. In this paper the use of prestressed Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) for the development of thin‐walled concrete structural elements is briefly presented. The transition of material to stronger, lighter and corrosion‐resistant CFRP represents a significant improvement in concrete construction. Prestressing with CFRP elements leads to more slender and thereby more economical and durable structural elements. Through the additional prestressing of a reinforcement mesh, very light and highly rigid surface structures can be constructed. Prestressing technologies have been developed and adapted for specific applications i.e. slabs and doubly curved structural elements and validated by experimental tests. This paper shows that prestressed carbon reinforced concrete can be used for more durable and efficient thin‐walled structures, allowing for more sustainable construction.</p>

Abstract:
<p>This paper reports the early findings of an ongoing project aimed at developing new methods to upgrade the current maintenance strategies of the civil and transport infrastructure. As part of these new methods, the use of Machine Learning (ML) algorithms is being investigated to constitute the core of a new generation of more accurate and robust structural health monitoring (SHM) systems for concrete structures. Unlike most of the existing SHM systems, relying on the analysis of the natural frequencies of the structure based on data obtained from accelerometers, the present study uses a distributed optic fiber system to monitor the strain distribution along steel reinforcing bars. The preliminary results of the study indicate that a semi-supervised Deep Autoencoder algorithm (DAE) can successfully quantify the damage attributable to transverse cracks in a reinforced concrete beam subjected to three-point loading. Future applications will feature the determination of crack locations, early detection of reinforcement corrosion as well as other types of damage such as splitting cracks or surface spalling.</p>

<p>More frequent terrorist attacks to civilians, buildings, and infrastructures have been observed in recent years, which occasionally resulted in significant fatalities, financial damages, and service interruptions due to collapses of the structures. The collapse of a structure can be triggered by substantial or complete damages of essential structural members, potentially resulting from close-range detonations. Close-range detonations can be fatal even with a small portable charge weight. Many structures in major international cities are potentially exposed to close-range detonations, simply because there is no room to maintain a sufficient stand-off distance around each structural member. Current available approaches to blast resistant designs are focusing on far-range detonations; for close-range detonations, a non-linear explicit finite element analysis is required, instead. Most structural engineering firms do not have access to the analyses, because the details of the analysis are not readily available. In the present study, some details of the non-linear explicit finite element analysis are presented for close-range detonations. The same method is applied to numerical parametric studies for a standard steel column subjected to a range of charge weights and stand-off distances. In the study, the development of a performance-based engineering chart is discussed, which can be used by general structural engineers without performing the numerical analysis. A few practical strengthening layers of steel members are also investigated to effectively mitigate potential damages from close-range detonations.</p>

Abstract:
<p>Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars can replace conventional steel reinforcing rebars to prevent from corrosion in reinforced concrete structures exposed to highly corrosive environments. In this contribution, three tested concrete beams reinforced with BFRP (Basalt Fiber Reinforced Polymer) bars are analyzed using three-dimensional finite element methods. In the numerical analyses, concrete is modeled as nonlinear using plasticity and damage principles, while BFRP is modeled as linear elastic material. The main focus of this research is to present the calibration process that should take place prior to any parametric studies. This calibration suggests that the concrete model should be regularized using a characteristic length and material post-yield fracture energies in both tension and compression to provide mesh-size independent results. The numerical results are compared to the test results with regard to failure load and cracking.</p>

Abstract:
<p>This paper proposes a new overall coordinate method (OCM) to determine the cable shape of self-anchored suspension bridges. In this method, the initial cable shape between adjacent clamps is assumed to be linear and the target cable shape is calculated by iterations based on the overall equilibrium of forces. This method is used to calculate the cable shape of the Chishui Bay Bridge in Hebei Province by MATLAB, and the results are compared with the measured data. The comparison shows that the OCM has a fast convergence speed and high accuracy.</p>

Abstract:
<p>The Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris is a building drawn by the well‐known architect Franck Ghery. As it can be observed on the above pictures, the structure is very complex and its behavior was not easy to deal with. If the dead load had to be analyzed with precision, the wind loading was another challenge. Of course, tests in a wind tunnel lab were carried out in order to measure the net wind pressures on the twelve glass roofs, wind pressures that had to be used for the design.For each roof, the design office had the distribution of the pressures for different wind directions related to time. For the design, the PSD of the wind measures on each sensor were at the disposal of the engineers. First difficulty, the maximum frequency of the lab measurements was about 1 Hz whereas the first frequency of the roofs was about 2 Hz. Second difficulty, as far as the design was concerned: it was essential to extract some equivalent wind loadings for each roof with the aim that these loadings were representative of maximum induced wind effects.For that purpose, a mathlab program has been developed to conduct a spectral analysis based on a finite element model of each roof. The paper will describe the procedure and the main equivalent wind loading used for the final design of the structure.</p>
